最初の3つのサンダーフォースのゲームを覚えているジェネシスの所有者は、シリーズ第4弾（と最後の16ビット）タイトルに何が起こったのか不思議に思うかもしれません。ここでの状態で、ゲームはライトニングフォースと呼ばれる（の理由は不明のため）でした。さて、シリーズの第五ゲームがプレイステーションに当たります。ただ、過去4回のゲーム、サンダーフォースVのように：パーフェクトシステムR-Typeとグラディウスの伝統で横スクロールシューティングゲームです。
