Dance Dance Revolution ist eine der ersten US-Titel in der Entwicklung Genre der Tanzsimulationen. Gameplay folgt die grundlegende Design in den meisten Musik und Rhythmus-Spiele (auch als ,Bemani' Spiele bekannt), wie auf dem Bildschirm Cues den Player direkt verschiedene Tasten in der Zeit mit der Musik zu schlagen. Während es mit einem normalen PlayStation-Controller gespielt werden kann, unterstützt das Spiel auch eine spezielle ,Tanz-Pad', dass die Spieler ihre Füße im Takt statt nur Drücken der Tasten bewegen kann.
