Cranky is a single-player educational math-based game. Cranky is a computer that, of course, has problems when it rains because water enters its circuits and damages them. The goal of the game is to repair Cranky's circuits, but because the rain has caused damage, only keys 3 and 5 work. In the game “Help Cranky” there are three difficulty levels, all of which play the same way. Cranky will show which of the 100 circuits is damaged on a numbered grid and the player's task is to find ways to make up for the damaged numbers. Starting with just the 3 and 5 keys, the player can create the numbers 3, 5, 33, 35, 53 and 55. These numbers can be added and subtracted to create other numbers and once a player enters 5 - 3 = 2 for example, the number 2 becomes available and can be used in future sums. Once all circuits have been repaired, Cranky becomes available for use as a working on-screen calculator. In the “Play Challenge” game, the player selects a pair of numbers between 1 and 9 and then uses them in a “Help Cranky” game. The game's documentation warns that not all pairs of numbers will allow the player to successfully complete the grid.
