Initialement prévu sur Mega Drive puis sur 32X et enfin sur Sega Saturn en 1996/1997, Sonic X-treme fut repoussé puis finalement annulé pour des raisons de temps et de restructuration de Sega. Le soft avait été créé à l'origine pour concurrencer Super Mario 64 et Crash Bandicoot. Le jeu aurait pu être le premier de la série Sonic en 3D avant Sonic R et Sonic Adventure.
