The player plays as one of eleven playable characters: Anguirus, Destoroyah, Gigan, Godzilla 90s, Godzilla 2000, King Ghidorah, Mecha-King Ghidorah, Megalon, Orga, Rodan, and Mechagodzilla. Players attack each other using basic melee strikes, special moves unique to each monster, and items from the environment like bulidings. Army forces and the monster Hedorah are also present and will attack all players when they appear. Bonus orbs, which can provide a finishing move or summon the monster Mothra for an airstrike, will also appear. A destruction mode is included which tasks players with destroying the city around them instead of each other.
