Covers most parts of the game, but a lot is still forthcoming. 2.0 - May 6, 2014 It seems I had this update sitting on my computer for like 3 years without posting it. Oops. There's a lot more information now, like how to do ice fishing, what you get for winning the tournaments, and the locations of every fish in the game. I'm also now pretty confident that the River King isn't in the game and the game is cleared once you complete your characters' objective. ############################################################################### F-2 Preface: It should be obvious, but this is a guide for a game that was never released in America, which is designed to help people who don't speak Japanese to play the game. That being said, knowledge of Katakana is virtually required to play this game so you can identify which fish you're catching, go download a chart off the net for reference if you don't know it. This game is rather heavy in terms of Kanji, and I cannot read most of it, so whenever I'm listing something I cannot translate it simply shows up as ??. Most of the time, reading these is not necessary, but in some cases it would really help. In general I will list the Japanese name for something first, followed by its translation. For things like items, I'll use English to refer to them, but for fish, bugs, plants, and animals, I'll use the Japanese names since you'll need to read them to know what you're looking at anyway. Whenever I am listing the items in a menu vertically, they are listed from top to bottom, then left to right, meaning that if the menu looked like this 1 3 5 2 4 6 It would show up as 1 2 3 4 5 6 In the guide. This is relevant to things like Bait. ############################################################################### F-3 Guide Progress: Fish - Fairly complete for Areas 1-8 (excluding 4). Some fish are out there that I haven't caught yet, if you see ?? in the list, that usually means I know there is another fish there but I haven't managed to hook it yet. Bugs - Moderate progress has been made, but there are an absolute ton of bugs in this game and some are hard to find. I haven't noted the icons or seasons associated with all bugs yet. Flowers - Done. The guide lists all 40 flowers and their seasons. Animals - Almost done. The remaining animals are probably night animals. Walkthrough - Almost done. Covers the 5 main quests in their entirety. Covers the mission for the Teenage Boy and the Young Girl. ############################################################################### F-4 You Can Help! Nushi Tsuri 64 is an extremely vast game and it would be beyond my abilities to chronicle all of the information needed to make a totally complete guide. As such, I'll need some input from interested readers like you. In particular, the following would be very helpful: - I can't remember who gives you the Report Card, if you know, that would be great. - Any information regarding the Missions of the characters I haven't done yet would be greatly appreciated. - If you know the locations of any Fish, Bugs, or Wild Animals that my guide doesn't have. If you contribute anything to this guide, you'll be appropriately credited. =============================================================================== =============================================================================== G-00 Game Basics: This sections goes over the basics of the game. ############################################################################### G-01 About Nushi Tsuri 64: Nushi Tsuri 64 (Lit. Fishing Master 64) is an instalment in the "Kawa No Nushi Tsuri" (River Fishing Master) series. It's a fishing RPG about a true outdoorsman: Your character is a master of fishing, bug catching, gardening, and fighting wild animals. You'll make use of your varied skills to earn money, buy better fishing tackle, and eventually catch the legendary River King. Basically the same story as all of the Nushi Tsuri games, actually. This series is occasionally brought to the US as "Legend of the River King". Although a localization for this game was apparently planned (there's an advertisement for this game in Flying Dragon and several websites had some coverage of "Legend of the River King 64), it never materialized. Actually, another game in the series, "Umi no Nushi Tsuri 2" (with which this game has Transfer Pak functionality) suffered the same fate, I would guess that around that time they decided the River King franchise wasn't profitable in the US, it would be around a decade before they decided to localize another game. Still, Nushi Tsuri 64 keeps a lot of the conventions from games that did come here, such as Legend of the River King for GB or Legend of the River King 2 for GBC, so if you've played those games you should be able to figure it out with the help of my guide, though this game is fairly Japanese heavy so you should at least get yourself a Katakana chart. If you're new to the series, you probably have no idea what to expect, that's normal. This series is pretty unique, I'm no fan of fishing games but I've always enjoyed its original and bizarre take on the genre. This game does not require a controller pack to save, it has 6 save slots, one for each member of the family (though which one you play as does affect the story to some extent). Changes from Legend of the River King (GB) ------------------------------------------ This game is reasonably similar to Legend of the River King 1 and 2 for GB / GBC (aka Kawa no Nushi Tsuri 3/4), but there are some changes. - You can collect plants and bugs, like in River King 2, but you can't dive for shellfish anymore. - Fishing is significantly more complex than it was in the GB games. There's also no music while fishing anymore, which is a shame, the old Fish Battle theme was awesome. - Fighting animals is totally different now. - You no longer seem to level up. Instead, you have Divine Favour, which changes based on your actions. - The game is MUCH bigger than it was on GB in every respect, in particular, there's like 20 times as many types of bait, rods, and lures. - Plot progression is much more open, in the GB games you usually had one mission per area that was needed to open the next one, in this game your missions span the entire game world and not all are required. ############################################################################### G-02 Starting Up: When you start the game up, you're presented with a pretty cinema scene of a field of flowers. When you get tired of looking at it, press A to pull up the title screen, and press A to go to the character select menu. Now, you'll be shown a wheel of 6 different characters. These are effectively "save slots", you can save one game per character. The storyline changes a little if you play as one of the other characters, but not a ton. The characters are, from the starting position, moving right: A Young Boy with a net A Teenage Boy with a green cap and a fishing rod A Teenage Girl in a red dress The Mother of the family holding a ladle The Father of the family holding a fish A Young Girl holding a watering can I've capitalized the names I'll use to refer to each person, Young / Teenage Boy or Girl, and Mother and Father. If you haven't used that character before, you'll see their vital statistics displayed in the bottom right. If you have, you'll see some information about your file instead. If you've saved a file, you'll see two options in the bottom left, if you haven't, there's only one. You can select by pressing up and down. They are: Play Delete If you select to delete, it will ask "are you sure?", and then you have to select Yes or No (the cursor starts on no). If you're playing as a character for the first time, you have to name them. English letters aren't an option, but you can select the confirm option (in the top right) to get the default name if you can't read Hiragana. Anyway, select a character, enter a name, and let's get ready to play! ############################################################################### G-03 Controls: You can play Nushi Tsuri 64 with your thumb on either the DPad or the Control Stick, the controls will still be the same either way. I'll assume you're using the DPad because I find it works better. On the field map, your character has 4 distinct modes. They are "walking", "fishing", "catching bugs" and "snipping plants". The controls are listed for each mode. Walking: -------- Obviously, this is used to walk around. DPad - Move about A - Confirm Text B - Open Menu Simply walk into someone if you want to talk to them. Fishing: -------- You switch to fishing mode when you want to fish. DPad - Turn yourself A - Cast your line, reel the line back in, fight fish B - Open menu, Retrieve your line (after it is cast) The longer you hold A, the farther you'll cast your line. After a fish has bitten your lure, press A to fight it. Much more detail on fishing is in the fishing section. Catching Bugs and Gardening: ---------------------------- These modes let you Catch Bugs or Snip Plants. Dpad - Move About A - Swing your net / Snip with your Scissors B - Open the menu Again, more detail on these in their respective sections. ############################################################################### G-04 Menus: When you're standing idle, B usually opens the menu. The Menu you'll see depends on which mode you're in, just like above: Walking Menu: ------------- This menu is shown when you're walking around. Fish Eat Catch Bugs Items Snip Plants Baskets Fish, Catch Bugs, and Snip Plants switch you to those respective modes. Eating allows you to eat something and recover some HP. You can buy stuff to eat at the grocery, or you can eat something from one of your baskets as a last resort. Items lets you examine some various things that you're holding. You start with the following: Fish Memo Fish Tank Flower Basket Bug Memo Bug Tank Gem Bag Plant Memo Fish Satchel Controller Pak Animal Memo Bug Cage (You'll only have the Controller Pak if one is inserted, it contains 2 more Fish Tanks and Bug Cages). The memos lets you see a list of all things of that type you have encountered, broken down by area, which is really helpful. The tanks can be used to store a fish or bug, which you can interact with, but you'll have to catch one first. More on this later. Fishing Menu: ------------- This menu is shown when you're fishing: Bait Eat Tackle Items Change Mode Fish Satchel Bait allows you to select your bait / lure / fly. If you're using a lure or fly, you just have to pick it, if you're using bait, you also have to choose how much bait to use. There are usually multiple options, of which the first is the most. There doesn't seem to be any real advantage to using more, so I always use the minimum amount, it makes your bait last longer. Tackle allows you to select your tackle. This obviously involves your rod, and possibly also bobs, sinks, hooks, lures, and flies. Change Mode is used to switch to one of the other modes, you'll be asked to pick which one afterwards, they go in the order: Bug Catching Plant Snipping Walking The other three options are the same as they always are, though the basket menu goes straight to the fishing satchel. Catching Menu: -------------- Fish Eat Catch Bugs Items Snip Plants Bug Cage Basically identical to walking. Snipping Menu: -------------- Fish Eat Catch Bugs Items Snip Plants Flower Basket Basically identical to walking. I guess I'll also describe the status window. It's displayed in the top left, whenever the menu is open: Health: Current / Max Money: Amount Favour: Percentage This is all in Kanji except for the numbers. Health and Money are obvious. The "Favour" represents your divine favour with regards to the mode you're currently in. See below for the section on that. ############################################################################### G-05 Time and Seasons: In addition to the concept of time, there are also seasons in this game. The seasons affect which bugs, plants, and wild animals are available, and Area 7 changes in the Winter (the lake freezes over). Thankfully, which fish are available is not season dependant (except in Area 7). So how do you tell the time? Well, Every game day is 15 "days" of the calendar year, so there are 2 game days per month. There are still 12 months in the year, which are broken up into seasons as follows: Winter = Months 1 and 2. Spring = Months 3 to 5. Summer = Months 6 to 9. Fall = Months 10 to 12. If you have the Pocket Watch, you can check it to see the current date and time. If you have the Alarm Clock, you can use it to instantly advance to the next season. As for time, it passes normally, except much faster than normal. Every second is 30 seconds of game time (so every 2 minutes is one game hour). Time doesn't pass if you're in a building or have the status menu open. It also passes during battles, though I think it does so at a slower rate. ############################################################################### G-06 Divine Favour: One concept which is new to Nushi Tsuri 64 is the concept of Divine Favour, which is the third value listed in the status screen. There are four spirits, one for each of the four things you can do in this game, and each can have a positive and negative opinion of you, represented as a percentage. Various things you can do raise or lower the percentages. You can view your percentage any time by switching to that move (the regular walking mode is considered the animals mode), or you can look at the Report Card (but this only updates itself once a year). Fighting Animals: ----------------- Attacking animals lowers the percentage. Feeding animals raises the percentage. It's easy to always raise this one, but the percentage rises very slow. Fishing: -------- Catching fish lowers the percentage. Releasing a fish after you catch it raises the percentage, as does "dropping" a fish just as you're about to catch it. Raising this one is an absolute pain. Fishing is a lot of work, and just letting your fish go seems like such a waste. At least you can repeatedly hook the same fish, so use something easy. Catching Bugs: -------------- Catching a bug lowers the percentage. Releasing a bug after you catch it raises the percentage. This is also pretty annoying, but at least catching bugs is easier than catching fish. Use a turtle or something else you can easily catch every time. Gardening: ---------- Snipping a plant lowers the percentage. Watering a plant raises the percentage. This is the easiest one to raise, simply water fully every time you snip a plant, and your percentage should go up. It also goes up pretty fast. So what does raising these percentages do for you? Apart from showing up on the Report Card, I'm not sure what this accomplishes. I've raised my score to 100%, and lowered it to 0%, and there seems to be no real effect. ############################################################################### G-07 Fishing In-Depth: Finding a Fish: --------------- Generally, any body of water will have fish, but some have more fish than others. When you're in Fishing Mode, you can see shadows of fish in the water. (Though they're a bit harder to see in this game than in Legend of the River King). When you've found a good spot, you need to cast your line. Try not to cast it right on top of the fish, they'll scatter. You want to throw it upstream of them, and then let it drift down to the fish. You can give the bait a little pull with A to speed this up, but be careful of doing this when a fish is nibbling your bait because you'll lose it, and if you do it near rocks you may snag your line and lose your bait that way. What happens next depends on the type of rod you have: Bait and Fly Fishing: --------------------- When a fish notices your bait, it'll take a nibble. You'll see your bob / fly change colour, and when you see a fish spinning around your bait, press A to hook the fish, and proceed to the fish battle segment. If your bob / fly changes colour only for a second, but you just hear a chirping sound and the fish doesn't spin, it means that fish doesn't like your bait. If you do find an interested fish, but you press A too early, you lose your bait (with a fly, the fish will just lose interest). Lure Fishing: ------------- Lures are unlike baits in that they attract attention when you hold A - All nearby fish will swim towards your lure to check it out. If they like it, you'll proceed immediately to the fishing battle (there's no spinning and bobbing here). If not, they'll still follow your lure around, so you can use a Lure rod to pull all the fish in an area to one spot, then switch to your favourite bait or fly rod and reel them in. It's quite literally like shooting fish in a barrel. Fishing Battle: --------------- Once you land the fish, the fishing battle begins. It is the same regardless of what type of rod you use, except that if not using Bait, there is an extra step to hook the fish, which is described below, otherwise, skip ahead one paragraph. When using a lure or fly, you have to attract the fish to it, first. Your goal is to trick the fish into thinking the lure is actually alive, so it will take a bite and get hooked. I'm not exactly sure what the ideal motion is in this game, but pulling it forward a little, letting go, then doing it again seems to attract attention, then when you see the fish actually going for it (the screen will zoom), speed up a little like you're trying to escape (but let go before it grabs the lure). When the fish actually takes a bite (there's a noise), immediately tap A hook the fish, or they'll just slip off (but they'll usually come back for another bite if you start the process again). If you take too long to hook the fish, you'll reel your lure all the way out of the water, thereby failing to hook the fish. There's no real penalty for this, though, you can just try again. After the fish is on the hook, you have to reel the fish in. Reeling is a simple matter of holding A, but the fish isn't going to take it lying down, it's going to be swimming or thrashing with everything it has to try to get away. If you let it get too far away or reel at the wrong time, the hook will come out and you'll lose the fish. Knowing when to reel comes down to watching and listening carefully. Generally, you should watch the line like a hawk, when you see slack on the line (that is, it's NOT a straight line), that's a good time to reel. If you time it well, you'll here a "swoosh" noise and the fish will start moving towards you (keep holding A). If you hear a "squack" noise, you pulled at the wrong time, let go of A IMMEDIATELY before you pull the hook out. After a successful pull, keep holding A to reel the fish in. As you pull, you'll hear a noise corresponding to the line tension. It varies per rod, but there's always two different noises, there's one that indicates low tension and one that indicates high tension (usually louder, higher pitched, or faster). Pulling with high tension is usually okay, but if you pull too long, you'll hear a "click" and the fish will regain control, this pulls the hook out a little bit. Let go and wait for your next chance to pull. With any luck, you should eventually pull the fish close to the water surface. All you have to do now is yank it out, but this is actually the hardest part. Should you pull the fish right above the water surface and then let go, you'll drop the fish, and it will get away after all your hard work. This is extremely frustrating, so make sure you start your final reel near the surface and don't let go after you hear the splash no matter what happens. You may find that some fish appear to be getting farther away each time than you can reel them back. Don't worry, because fish have stamina - The longer you fight, the more tired the fish gets, and the farther you can pull it each time. In fact, even if you lose the fish, it remains where it was, and you can hook it again and keep going, and the fish does not regain all of its stamina. This is pretty well the only way to beat some very powerful fish. Every time you mess up, you're pulling the hook out a little bit, and most fish will panic and get a small boost of speed. Mess up enough times, and it will slip out of the fish's mouth (if using bait, you'll lose your bait). If you do really terrible, you might even snap your line, which will also costs you your hook / lure / fly. Even if you win, if you did poorly, you may still break your lure / fly / hook anyway (you'll see a message after it tells you how big the fish was). Save often. The above strategy, executed well, will beat most fish. However, sometimes, despite your best efforts, the line just won't go slack often enough for you to have a chance at catching the fish before it reaches the end of your line and breaks free. Most of the time, this just means that your tackle isn't good enough. Get a better rod, and you'll find that they reel faster, have longer lines, or hook the fish better. However, this may not even be enough. In some cases, you'll have to attempt to pull the fish while the line is still taught, I call this a "yank". This sometimes works, and you'll get to reel the fish, but a lot of the time the line will just squeak, so be quick to let off on that button if you fail. There's a couple tricks for this, for one thing, you can watch and listen to the fish, if it's just gliding instead of actively swimming, or if it's swimming upwards, that could be a good time for a yank. You also tend to have better luck after a really long run. After you get the fish out of the water, the game will tell you how big the fish was. You can press A to keep it, or B to throw it back. You might want to throw it back if your satchel is getting full and it's not what you want, particularly in a contest, where you don't want to sell your fish. It may seem hard at first, but you'll gradually get used to looking for the cues. Start with weak fish and work your way up. Record Breakers: ---------------- How hard it is to beat a given fish is proportional to how big it is. However, very infrequently you'll find one that seems FAR harder than it ought to be. In these cases, the fish may be a special kind of fish called a "Record Breaker". If you catch it, there's a slightly different message and there'll be a special red stamp in the Fish Memo. So what happens if you catch every Record Breaker, thus collecting every stamp in the Fish Memo? Probably nothing, but I don't know for sure, Record Breakers are very rare and it'd take an extremely long time to catch them all. Comparison of Rod Types: ------------------------ Though you'll probably want to have all 3 types of rods, it's important to know what each rod is good at. Bait: ----- Advantages: Bait is cheap and plentiful. Virtually every type of fish will accept some sort of bait. Losing bait also isn't that bad, all things considered, it's much better than losing a lure or a fly. Good for testing the waters, so to speak. Disadvantages: If you have to change bait types, you lose the bait that's on your line. This makes finding the right type of bait annoying (though if you have my guide, I tell you some bait that will work, which mitigates this somewhat). Lure: ----- Advantages: Lures are reusable, so you can freely switch between them with no penalty, and you'll never run out. Also, when in the water, they attract fish, which is extremely useful, it's worth having a lure rod for this alone. Disadvantages: If you fish badly, you may break or lose your lure, which is really lame. Not only are they expensive to purchase, you'll have to trek all the way back to the store that sold it to you. Fly: ---- Advantages: Flies are basically identical to lures, except cheaper. There's also less of them, so there's less trial and error. Disadvantages: Flies lack that awesome fish attracting effect that lures have. ############################################################################### G-08 Bug Catching In-Depth: Finding a Bug: -------------- When you're in bug catching mode, you'll sometimes notice little shiny dots as you walk around, get closer and they'll reveal themselves to be bugs. Step next to one and hold A for a second (then release) to begin the bug battle. Bug Battle: ----------- The scene will now switch to a nature scene, displayed using a fisheye effect, complete with one or more bugs (which may even be of different types). You'll see your hand hovering over the scene, move your hand using the Dpad or Control stick to find the bug, then press A to move closer or B to move farther away. The goal is to get close enough to grab the bug (also with A), but if you go too fast, you'll scare the bugs away. Make slow movements to avoid spooking them. After you successfully grab the bug, press A to keep it, or B to let it go, just like with fish. Be aware that some bugs (such as bees) will defend themselves, usually after a missed grab or if you spook them. ############################################################################### G-09 Gardening In-Depth: Finding a Flower Patch: ----------------------- When you in plant snipping mode, you'll sometimes notice little shiny dots as you walk around, get closer and they'll reveal themselves to be flower patches. Step next to one and hold A for a second (then release) to begin gardening. Gardening: ---------- Gardening is not a "battle", for once, flowers don't fight back or run from you. You just have to either water them or snip them. Gardening has the following menu: Water View Plants Snip Leave While watering or snipping, press A (when the icon changes) to do that action, or B to open the menu again. Obviously, Snipping allows you to cut down plants and take them. Watering causes plants from this patch to get bigger, so they'll sell for a touch more if you cut them later. You can check the plants you're currently holding by selecting "View Plants", and when you're done, select Leave. ############################################################################### G-10 Fighting Animals In-Depth: Finding Animals: ---------------- Animals sometimes show up on the field map as you walk around, other times you will be randomly attacked. Either way, when you encounter an animal you'll hear it's cry and enter a battle. If riding the Bike, you cannot be attacked. Wild Animal Battle: ------------------- Unlike in previous Nushi Tsuri games, wild animals cannot be defeated (they simply leave) and you don't gain experience for fighting them. The only real point to fighting seems to be to add animals to the Animal Memo and to affect the Animal Divine Favour Percentage. Fighting, like gardening, begins with a menu: Feed Snacks Attack Run Away B reopens the menu (you can't do this while running away). Unlike in previous Nushi Tsuri games, violence is not the only way to deal with wild animals, you can now choose whether to befriend or attack. Either way, You'll be throwing something at the animal, either food or some kind of weapon. To throw, you must line up your shot using a slingshot-like mechanism. The translucent icon shows where you're aiming (ignore the opaque one), hold A to determine the power, then let go to throw. If your aim is true, the animal will either catch the food or the business end of your ammo. Be aware that you have limited quantities of both feed and weapons. Animals won't just stand still as you do this, though, they'll be constantly moving around, and if they get very close to you they may attack, causing you to lose health. You can open your Snacks and have a snack to recover health. Alternatively, you can simply make a run for it. You'll see a bar at the bottom displaying your character, when you reach the far right, you escape, but you can be attacked during this time. You can tap A to speed it up, but tapping A may also cause you to trip. Battle ends when either the animal leaves, you run away, or you run out of health. So should you respond to animals with force, or with kindness? Well, there's a few advantages and disadvantages to each: Feeding the animals: If you feed the animal, it's less likely to attack you, and feeding the animals raises your animal fighting percentage. Also, some animals may even heal you if you get on their good side. Fighting the animals: If you fight the animal, it is more likely to run away after being hit a few times, however, it is also more likely to counterattack. Fighting animals lowers the animal fighting percentage. All in all, it's probably best to do different things for different animals. For reasonably docile animals, you can feed them, for very aggressive animals, you'll probably want to fight. Also, I choose feeding a fair amount simply because I don't like to hurt animals, what kind of twisted individual is going to throw rocks at a house cat or a cute little bunny? ############################################################################### G-11 Transfer Pak: This game has Transfer Pak functionality with Umi No Nushi Tsuri 2 for Game Boy. Insert Umi No Nushi Tsuri 2 into the transfer pak and go to the fish memo. Move the cursor down to the bottom and there'll be a section for Umi No Nushi Tsuri 2, and you can select either file 1 or file 2 (unless they have no data). Choose one to import the fish you have in your fish memo in that file to Nushi Tsuri 64, they'll be added to section 11. You can now look at the fish you caught in Umi No Nushi Tsuri 2 in 3D. It even shows how big they were. Also, you'll unlock the Moroko Rod in Umi no Nushi Tsuri 2 for doing this. You can also get it by beating the game, but this lets you get it early. =============================================================================== =============================================================================== M-00 Maps: This sections contains maps of all 10 game areas. Here is a main overworld map showing the connections between the areas: Area 10 | | Area 8 -- Area 9 | | Area 7 -- Area 6 -- Area 4 / | / | Area 5 Area 3 | | Area 2 -- Area 1 How to read the maps: --------------------- Enclosed space represents land. Unenclosed space represents water. Equals signs (=) and quotes (") represent bridges. Letters represent points of interest on the map. For important parts of the map, such as the Bait Shops, there are special codes you can use to find them: Bait Shops (#xB) Save Posts (#xS) Fish Shops (#xF) Inns (#xI) Where x is the number of the Area you're in. So if you were in the fictional Area 0, searching for #0F would find you the Area 0 Fish Shop. Numbers represent notable fishing areas, and I've denoted the fish you can find there. The fish may not be EXACTLY in that area, but they're generally nearby. In each case, I've denoted which fish you can find in those areas, and one type of bait that I know they accept. In many cases, there's loads more. I've also listed the known sizes that the fish can have. If there's a ! over the larger number, that means that size is known to be a Record Breaker. ############################################################################### M-01 Area 1: ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Map: ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- -------- --------H----------||--------------- A B ========= CD N \\ Q S | | ========= L \\ | | _ _| |_ I O === | \| | | 1 | === | | | | EG J M P | |_ R _| | | | F | \ _ /_ | | | __ _/ \_/ \_// |_| / / | |________/ 5 \_ \/ | | _ | |_ \\/\_ _ 2 |__K| 3 4 |_ | | |_/_/ 1-A: Sign ---------- To Area 2 1-B: Restaurant ---------------- It doesn't seem like there's anything you can do in here. 1-C: Area 1 Save Post (#1S) ---------------------------- You can save your game here. You can use the Raft by selecting it when facing the water, while on the Raft you can fish just as you could on land (though the current pushes you around a bit). 1-F: Fishing Contest --------------------- Talk to the man waving a paper near the sign. For 50 yen, you can participate in a fishing contest. Catch the biggest Mejina you can (it takes 49cm to win) then return to him and select the top answer to submit your fish. The prize is 1000 yen if you win, which seems like a lot, but catching a Mejina that big requires extreme amounts of luck. 1-G: Boat Shop --------------- Talk to the lady behind the table, and choose yes, she'll give you the Bar of Soap. 1-H: Sign ---------- To Area 3. 1-I: Raffle Girl ----------------- The girl here is running a Raffle. They're actually pretty tough to catch, particularly the Dai ones, so make sure you have a good rod. The prize is 500 yen, which isn't really worth it. You'd probably make just as much simply selling the fish you caught. 5-K: Area 5 Bait Shop (#5B) ---------------------------- You can sell bugs here. He no longer offers it after you finish your mission. 7-E: Fishing Contest --------------------- Changes based on the season. When it's not winter, the target is Burakku Basu (Dai Burakku Basu is also okay). Simply catch a lot, then talk to the guy to see how many points you have. If it exceeds 5250, end the contest to win the Bike. The Bike is awesome, it lets you move like twice as fast. Select it from the item menu, then get on the bike to use it. To get off, press B, then choose the top left option. In winter, it's Ice Fishing for Wakasagi. To Ice Fish, buy the Ice Fishing gear from the shop, then press A repeatedly while in fishing mode to drill a hole, then cast your line into the hole by holding down A and wait. With any luck, you'll get a bite, then the battle proceeds like a standard lure battle. If not, you probably have a bad spot, so move somewhere else. You're only allowed so many holes, but if you run out you can just go to sleep, it doesn't end the contest. You need 10 to win, but if you're using the special Ice Fishing Hook, you can actually catch 3-4 at once, so it only takes 3-4 catches. When you have enough, talk to the contest organizer and choose the first option for 1000 yen. 7-F: Restaurant ---------------- It doesn't seem like there's anything you can do in here. 7-G: Boat Shop --------------- It doesn't seem like there's anything you can do in here. 7-H: Area 7 Bait Shop (#7B) ---------------------------- You can sell bugs here. Nushi Tsuri 64 is a very open-ended game, the bulk of what really constitutes the "Walkthrough" is in the Maps section, above. However, this section will serve as an overview for the main quest. ############################################################################### W-1 The Game Begins and Your Mission ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Depending on which character you have, you'll see a different opening sequence. I didn't feel like translating them in their entirety, so I approximated some of it. The important thing is just the fish it revolves around. Young Boy: ---------- There's been a lot of earthquakes lately. The Young Boy believes that the earthquakes are linked to the Namazu, so he ventures out to catch the Dai Namazu (There's an old Japanese legend that Catfish are related to earthquakes). Young Girl: ----------- The girl has the ability to talk to animals. Her cat, Zapp, asks her to catch the legendary Golden Nijimasu. Teenage Boy: ------------ Someone comes to the door and mentions something about a giant Satsukimasu, which the Teenage boy sets off to catch. Teenage Girl: ------------- The Teenage Girl recieves a handwritten (love?) letter, which is far too tedious for me to translate. For whatever reason, she decides to set off on a mission to catch Hariyo. Mother: ------- One of the Mother's friends informs her of a contest. She decides to enter, which requires her to catch a Madai. Father: ------- The father is sent a letter about how a 90cm Ishidai has been spotted and there's a reward for anyone who can catch it, so he sets off to find it. One way or another, you end up setting off on your journey, just outside your house in Area 1. First, you'll probably want to get a feel for the game and look into upgrading your fishing gear (which requires money). A good way to get some practice and some money is to go to the private pond, which is to the east. For 50 yen (you started with 300), you can fish there to your heart's content, and you are not required to supply bait or even hook the fish yourself. If you don't know how to fish, check the Game Basics section. Once you feel adequately confident, you can start fishing in the ocean, or you can start catching bugs or gardening. Eventually, you're going to want to buy yourself a pretty decent Bait and Lure Rod (the good ones are expensive, also, you can look at the length of the rod), as well as some more Bait and Lures. You might also want to get a head start on the main quests (see the next section), though you can't do much until Fall. One thing you might want to look into is the contest in Area 7. Winning it awards the Bike, which is a fantastically useful item that lets you move twice as fast AND avoid fighting animals. You'll have to catch a lot of Burakku Basu for that contest, but that's not too hard with a good Lure Rod. ############################################################################### W-2 The Five Main Quests ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The actual progression in this game is essentially broken up into 5 quests. The Trading Quest must be completed to gain access to Areas 8-10, and thus you must do it first, and one of either the Brown Basket or Namitentou Quests must be completed to get the Pass and access Area 4. The Trading Quest ----------------- As you explore the game world, one of the first things you'll notice is that you can't get into Area 8 (it's north from Area 6), because the bridge is broken. This quest culminates in the repairing of the bridge, which is necessary to complete all of the other quests and each character's Mission. This quest involves no actual work on your part, all you have to do is talk to the right people in the right sequence to make the trades. The only catch is that the quest must be started in the Fall season, but after that you can complete the whole thing in one day. So pass some time at the beginning of the game until Fall (if you've had enough, you can just go to an inn and sleep until Fall). Then, talk to the people in the sequence listed below (all of them are outside, check the Maps if you can't find someone). Wanderer in Area 6 - Gives you the Leaf - Must be done in Fall Gathered Kids in Area 5 - Gives you the Baked Sweet Potato Man in Area 2 - Gives you the Winning Ticket Raffle Girl in Area 1 - Gives you the Golden Statue Mansion Owner in Area 3 - Gives you the Tools Carpenter in Area 6 - Takes the Tools, ends the quest Now just go sleep in the Inn, and the bridge will be repaired. You can now access Area 8. The Brown Basket Quest ---------------------- To begin this quest, you must talk to a man in one of the Houses in Area 1, who will give you the Brown Basket. Your goal is to collect 7 specific flowers for it, all you have to do is snip the correct flower while having the Brown Basket in your inventory and it will be collected. You can actually get the Basket before you complete the Trading Quest and start collecting the flowers, but you won't be able to successfully complete it until you can access Area 8-10. The Brown Basket Holds the following 7 Flowers: Suzuna - Area 3 - Spring Nazuna - Area 6 - Spring Suzushiro - Area 6 - Spring Hakobe - Area 7 - Spring Ogyou - Area 8 - Spring Hotokenosa - Area 9 - Spring Seri - Area 10 - Spring or Summer As you can see, you can get them all in the Spring, just grab them all in the 2nd Spring after you complete the Trading Quest. Afterwards, bring the completed Brown Basket back to the house where you got it for your prize. Completing this quest nets you two prizes: The Pass (or the Alarm Clock if you completed the Namitentou Quest first), and the Black Gem. The Namitentou Quest -------------------- To begin this quest, talk to a man in one of the Houses in Area 3, who will give you the Namitentou Cage. Your goal is to collect 7 different Namitentous from all over the game world, each appears in a different area (thankfully, on the field map they look like Ladybugs, but they can be hard to locate). The following areas have Namitentous for your cage: 2, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10. Be aware that Area 6 has 2 different bug encounters that look like Ladybugs, and Area 3 has one, but it doesn't count. In Area 10, you can also talk to a kid who will give you the Strange Namitentou for your cage. I don't believe this is necessary to complete the quest (if you take it to the person who gave you the cage, he throws it away), but it doesn't hurt. Namitentous are available in all seasons except Winter, so you can complete this right after you complete the Trading Quest. Take the completed cage back to the man who gave it to you for your reward, the Pass (or the Alarm Clock if you have already completed the Brown Basket Quest). The Gem Bag Quest ----------------- Unlike the other quests, you do not have to start this one, you begin the game with the Gem Bag already in your possession. However, you cannot complete it until you get access to Area 8-10. Your goal here is to find 7 differently coloured gems: Red Gem - Given to you by a person in a house in Area 2. Blue Gem - Obtained in the Inn in Area 3 (get the Rock from the man in the bath, then give it to the other man in the Inn). White Gem - Given to you by a kid in the Inn in Area 6. Green Gem - Found in a chest in a house in Area 9. Yellow Gem - Given to you by a kid in a House in Area 10. Black Gem - Awarded for completing the Brown Basket Quest. Purple Gem - Found in the Secret Well in Area 7. Once you have all 7 Gems, take them to the Kappa cave in Area 10, where you can exchange them for one of two rewards: The Kappa's Secret Treasure (top option) or the Kappa's Special Lures (Bottom Option). Take the Lures, the Secret Treasure is a dud. After completing the Gem Bag Quest, you can start it again. All of the Gems will have returned to their original spots. The Kappa Quest --------------- The Kappa Quest begins in the Souvenir Shop in Area 7, but you need to have access to Area 8 to do anything. The Souvenir Shop sells Hats, buy two hats (that's all you can carry), then bring them to the Statues in Area 8. Since there's 6 statues, you'll have to make 3 trips (I hope you have the Bike). After putting a Hat on all 6 Statues, check the statues again, then head to Area 9, where the water will have drained, giving you access to two caves. One cave leads to the Kappas, who mourn the loss of their Kappa Charm, which can be found in the Sunken House, which you can reach through the other cave. After claiming the Kappa Charm (and the 1500 yen in the other chest), return it to the Kappas to make them happy again. You can now talk to the Kappa outside for a special fish, which seems to be the extent of the reward. There's a man in Area 9 who asks you about the Kappas, but what he says doesn't seem to matter. ############################################################################### W-3 Finishing the Game ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Completing Your Quest: ---------------------- To complete your quest, you must catch your special fish (there'll be fanfare and a long message when you do), then return to a specific area for a scene. Young Girl: ----------- After the Young Girl catches the Golden Nijimasu, return to Your Home in Area 1. Zapp and all of his friends are there, ready to chow down on the elusive fish. They all thank the Young Girl for being such a good friend to cats. Teenage Boy: ------------ After the Teenage Boy catches the Satsukimasu, return to the Friend's House in Area 1. The Teenage Boy and his friend celebrate his success, until he collapses from exhaustion! The friend's mother decides to cook him dinner, ironically using the Satsukimasu you worked so hard to catch. Well, no sense letting it go to waste. The end? -------- It's not totally clear that these scenes represent the end of the game. After the scene ends, there's no credits or anything, you just go right back to the game. Perhaps something happens if you complete the game with all 6 characters? =============================================================================== =============================================================================== C-0 Compendiums: This section contains a lot of supplemental info. ############################################################################### C-1 Fish Compendium ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Explanation of fields ID - The game's internal ID tag for the fish.
