Revenge was released for the XBOX and PS2 in 2005. One spectacular year later, the game was released on the Xbox 360 with a graphics overhaul and a handful of new features sprinkled in. Anyone familiar with the Burnout series knows that Burnout games are based around high speed races and high octane crashes, and Revenge delivers. The game boasts a staggering amount of single player events which make up the World Tour (169 total) and has an impressive list of vehicles as well (79 total). Fan favorite crash events are back, and are showcased in their proper HD glory, alongside the multiple other race-type events. Are you ready to climb the Ranks of Revenge and claim the title of Dominator? Or are you just a Harmless Sunday afternoon driver? You'll find out soon enough, and the whole world is here to watch... This FAQ is fairly simple to read/follow, just be sure to use the find feature (ctrl+F) and type the code or name of the section you wish to jump to. Or, you can read the entire thing front to back, referencing certain sections or tough events. The guide is based off of my play time with Burnout Revenge over the past 2 years and any outside sources or information have been omitted entirely. If you find a problem with the guide, have a better strategy for an event, or have something that you think should be added, do not hesitate to contact me by email: jwkwitkowski@gmail.com Credit will be given for any additions or comments by you if they are integrated into the guide in any way, shape, or form. Any extreme problems with the guide (in regards to strategies and the like) will be addressed immediately upon notification. Layout suggestions and such will always be considered, but beneficial game information is more important! Be aware that this guide was written by me for the Xbox 360 version of Burnout Revenge. Select portions of the guide or it as a whole may or may not apply to the XBOX and PS2 versions. =============== [BR2] Controls =============== RT - Accelerate/Forward LT - Brake/Reverse RB - Next Music Track Y - Change View X - Rear View A - Boost/Impact Time (after crashing) B - Crashbreaker (after crashing) LS - Steer/Aftertouch (after crashing) RS - Rotate Camera =========================== [BR3] The art of Takedowns =========================== A takedown is quite simply the act of crashing another racer, granting you a massive boost gain and an obvious lead as the vehicle(s) recover. Some forms of takedowns are as simple as slamming a vehicle into a guardrail, though the more intense takedowns require some skill, and creativity. Listed are some of the most common forms of takedowns, and a few special ones. Once you master the basic concept of takedowns, they will become a natural, fun, and crucial part of your Burnout experience. Traffic: Traffic takedowns are achieved by causing another racer to crash into a non racing vehicle. Experiment with using traffic against other racers, as most events have traffic throughout. - Shunt a vehicle from behind, causing it to rear end a racer. - Shunt or slam a racer, causing it to rear end or slam head on into traffic. - Shunt traffic into semis or tankers, causing them to jackknife or roll, and in turn spill their load and other debris all over a racer. Psyche Out: With a opponent right on you, drive straight toward an obstacle or oncoming traffic, swerving to safety at the last possible second, leaving the other racer no time to react and be forced to crash into it! - Box an aggressive opponent in on the outside of a curve leading right into oncoming traffic, and cut out right at the last possible second! - Lead racers to dead ends or cliffs, trading paint until right before the cut off, then leave them to the wall/free fall! Vertical: Vertical takedowns are just as they sound; from a jump or ramp, land right on top of other racers to take them out. Death from above! - Unmarked ramps are scattered throughout the locations. Keep an eye out for sheet metal, drain pipes, construction (dirt, gravel) piles, loading docks, stairs, and the like. Get some air and aim for the opposition! - Small bumps and hills in the road can be used to gain air time by boosting as you hit them, surprise vertical takedowns. They never saw it coming! Slam: Slamming a opponent is basically driving alongside them and quickly driving into the side of their vehicle, causing the driver to lose temporary control and veer off into the direction in which you slammed them. Slamming is useful for when two racers are neck and neck, and you need the lead. Learn how to slam effectively early on, as it is an easy way to score takedowns in any event. - Slam racers into oncoming traffic, off of cliffs, into pillars and walls, and pretty much any other solid object you come across. - While taking curves, racers often drift on the outside of curves (near the <<<< curve wall). Drift out from the inside of the curve and slam them into the curve wall! - Boost while slamming a racer to gain some ground and then cut them off near a wall or building! They almost always crash into the wall or building. - Continuously slam against a racer, forcing them to grind along a wall or other barrier. After a short time, the grinding takes it's toll on the car and totals it. - Slam into the rear half of a racer to cause them to fishtail, or sometimes to spin out wildly into traffic or obstacles! Signature: The most impressive takedowns, and the hardest to pull off. These takedowns are specific to a location and usually require you to pull off some crazy stunts such as smacking a racer into a crane on the freeway! There are three signature takedowns for each location and you can find descriptions of how to obtain them in-game in the event selection screen. Crashbreaker: If you wreck in a crashbreaker type event or in crash event, you can self destruct your ride in an attempt to take out racers behind you. In crash events they allow you to destroy traffic and relocate your ride, making blocking multiple lanes a cinch. After executing a crashbreaker, you can apply aftertouch (Left control stick) to attempt to wreck other racers if the explosion didn’t catch anyone. - Use the camera controls to see if the opposition is close first! - Take out racer(s) with a crashbreaker to fill your boost bar, but lose all of your boost if you fail to score a takedown with it. - If you have a lead and are taken out or just crash on your own, this is the best time to use a crashbreaker. The other racers were likely right on your tail and will drive right into your crashbreaker! - Execute a crashbreaker the moment a racer takes you out for instant revenge! - Leading multiple racers around a sharp turn and crashing purposely, and then crashbreaking is an easy way to build boost and get challenges. You are rewarded higher event ratings for driving aggressively, don't be afraid to take it to the extreme! ====================== [BR4] Ratings & Ranks ====================== Event Ratings: Your style is rated in each event as either good, great, or awesome. Build your rating during an event by driving aggressively, checking traffic, boosting, scoring takedowns, and the like. You must also meet event requirements for medals (bronze, silver, or gold). The medal earned and the rating earned for each event together form the total rating for that event in stars. If you scored an awesome rating but only earned the bronze for the event type, your score would lower by one star, a silver medal does not change the rank, and a gold medal will raise your rank by 1. For the maximum rating of 5 stars, a gold medal and an awesome rating is needed for each event! World Tour Rank: Each rank in the World Tour holds it's own events and higher ranks are locked until a minimum amount of stars (from events) o---------o are reached. Once you unlock a new rank, a new star is filled | * | in on the rank diamond to reflect your level of dominance. The | * * | first rank, Harmless, is open from the start of the World Tour. | * * * | -x- | * * | Each rank has a variety of events spread out among different | * | locations, and completing events opens up more to choose from. o---------o Once you have a few events unlocked through playing, start earning higher event ranks to open up new World Tour ranks and in turn, more events. Higher World Tour ranks have tougher events, and the level of progression is well done. Harmless events are pretty easy, and Insane events can be frustrating. Just be aware that the higher the rank and more obscure the name, the tougher the events may be. ================== [BR5] Event Types ================== Traffic Attack: Timed events in which your goal is to cause as much mayhem and destruction as possible. Traffic attack events are set in heavy traffic and you have to ram, bash, sideswipe, or otherwise cause vehicles to crash. Each time you hit a vehicle it will fly out like a pinball from a side bumper! You can earn bonuses and chain combos by launching smaller vehicles into larger ones, launching one vehicle into multiple other ones, and flipping large trucks and semis. Be careful that you stay with the flow of traffic though as hitting a vehicle head on will end in your vehicle crashing, you have to hit vehicles from the rear or side to avoid crashing yourself. Stringing up a nice combo of crashes will net you more time, even if you are down to the last seconds, so make use of your boost to plow through the throngs of vehicles until you reach the requirements for gold! Burning Lap: Timed trial events with predetermined vehicles consisting of a single lap. You have to build your boost and use it constantly and make use of shortcuts to earn the gold. Driving on the wrong side of the road will build your boost pretty quick so make use of it when possible. If you have trouble with the times on these trials, at least pass with silver or bronze first to learn the track and shortcuts. Race: Straightforward race events in which you need to come in first place, ahead of the other racers. Regular Burnout options still apply here and you can check traffic and use the same tactics (and others) to crash opponents in the race. Some races require shortcuts but they are usually optional, though the other racers will use them often. Other racers will also attempt to wreck you, and if an opponent does then that opponent will become a "rival" and have a red arrow over the vehicle so you can track it down for Revenge! Crashing other racers will raise your maximum boost and you will lose it all if you crash yourself (by any means). Overall in races it pays to drive recklessly and aggressively, using any means to come in first place. Road Rage: Timed events in which you have to takedown other racers to add time to the clock and to reach the higher ranks. Every time you takedown a racer the game will display how many more you need to takedown to extend the timer. These are not races, you just have to keep driving and performing takedowns. Grand Prix: An event made up of a series of races in which driver rank carries over to each race and the total rank of all races determines the winners. For Grand Prix events it is best to try to finish in the top three for each race. Though you don’t necessarily need to come in first because the CPU racers are pretty inconsistent and crash often, losing their ranks. Just do your best to gain boost and stay ahead of the pack, using shortcuts and takedowns to gain an edge. Eliminator: Eliminator races do not have a set amount of laps, instead they have a 30 second timer that will count down. When this timer reaches zero, the racer in last place is eliminated and the 30 second time restarts and repeats. This goes on until only one racer remains so it is up to you to start strong and stay out of last place early on, and be sure you are in first place when only two of you (racers) remain! Crash: In Crash events your main goal is to crash your vehicle into a busy road, street, or intersection and cause as much damage to other vehicles as possible. Once you crash, other vehicles will start to crash, and others will crash into them, and so on and so forth. Each time vehicles crash, your crashbreaker bar will fill. Once the crashbreaker bar is full, you can execute a crashbreaker in an attempt to relocate your ride and cause even more crashes. Explosions will increase the score multiplier, and the gold, silver, and bronze medals are awarded based on how much damage you cause ($ value). Crash events show a short cinematic of where you should go for optimal damage before you start, so the Crash events and their strategy do not stray far from that. Shortcuts in Burnout Revenge are pretty obvious unlike other racing titles. A shortcut will have two bight blue flashing markers on either side of the entrance (see below) and I will call out shortcuts of interest by their number, in the order that they appear. For example: "The first two shortcuts will save you precious seconds while most others are not necessary. Be sure to take the 7th shortcut (past the second bridge) for a chance for early victory as well." Otherwise, I will just refer to shortcuts in reference to landmarks in the tracks: "Take the two shortcuts on the freeway before entering the city." etc. Shortcut chains describe a series of shortcuts that aren't connected, but that exit right near the entrance to another (sometimes directly in front of you). These chains are referenced in the different events, so it's best you know what they are. Shortcuts in Game: |V| |V| <-- flashing blue shortcut signs |V| |V| |V| |V| |V| |V| |V| |V| Shortcut Entrance (road) _____________ ================= [BR6] Challenges ================= Each location has a set of in-game challenges that can be completed to fill in the Challenge Sheet. Once all challenges on a challenge sheet are completed, you are rewarded a special vehicle. Alongside the Challenge sheet for each location is the Takedown Book, snapshots of your signature takedowns. Challenges completed across different ranks all count towards the same sheet, so do not worry about trying to get all of the Sunshine Keys challenges in the Harmless Rank for example. Challenges can be completed in any order, whenever you finish the task. Most of them are unlocked for use by completing the various events, though a select few are only unlocked by completing the challenge sheets for each location. Race type vehicles can be used in all events, and crash vehicles can only be used in the crash events. It is best to use the crash vehicles in the crash events though, they are better suited for the job than racing vehicles. As you go along, the unlocked cars get faster and easier to handle. Completing an event refers to winning at least a bronze medal for unlocking purposes. The Tour is made up of 10 different event ranks, each holding different events spread across the different locations. As you pass events, more unlock in your current rank. As you pass even more events, more ranks open up and in turn, new events within those new ranks open up. You can go back to earlier ranks and events at any time, so don’t worry about progressing to the next rank too early. There is also a secret rank, that does not hold any events but unlocks a vehicle for use, Elite rank. Plow through every vehicle in sight to build your bonus, rating, cash, time, and boost. Take the first shortcut on the right to plow through tables and chairs for extra cash, and take the next one (also on the right) for more tables and chairs. As you cross the bridge stay on the right side and plow through the traffic (the shortcut in between the bridges has no traffic at all and is not worth going through) on the bridge. After you exit the bridge it is worth taking the short- cut on the right to find plenty of parked cars and other destructibles for more cash, as soon as you exit this shortcut enter the one right across the road for more barrels to destroy. Stay on the main road until you see the yacht (ship) on the left and drive on that road to find plenty of parked cars and barrels to destroy. Continue on the main road until you hit the $500,000 needed for gold and then let the time run out. Burning Lap - Forwards Gold: 1:25.00 Silver: 1:40.00 Bronze: 2:05.00 You have to drive the Tuned R180 ST in this trial and time is tight. Make sure you take the shortcut on the left at the start and the one between the two bridges. When you reach the yacht (boat) follow that road to save some time and take the left side of the final bridge (against traffic) to reach the finish line quicker. If you boosted the entire time and followed the shortcuts, you should have the gold with seconds to spare. Race - Reverse Weight Class: Light, Super Light Laps 1 Gold: 1st place Silver: 2nd place Bronze: 3rd place It is worth taking the first shortcut on the right (after the first major curve) and possibly the jump that is along that shortcut. Besides that you will want to stay on the main roads to check other racers and traffic to build your boost. Once you have a lead, stay on the main road and boost into oncoming traffic to keep your vehicle's boost built up. ~O0==============={Motor City}===============0O~ Crash - Dock Fight Gold $5,500,000 Silver $3,000,000 Bronze $1,000,000 Drive straight into the semi here, you do not want to fall off of the ledge, you want to stay on the road for your crashbreaker. Let the pileup ensue, and when you can activate your crashbreaker send your ride sailing into the other lane to keep that road blocked. With both roads blocked, watch the points add up and you will likely get another crashbreaker as well. Easy gold. Race - Short Reverse Weight Class: Light, Super Light Laps 2 Gold: 1st place Silver: 2nd place Bronze: 3rd place Choose a light, fast vehicle and take the shortcut on the left right in the beginning of the race for a nice lead. After the two major curves, take the parking garage shortcut for a huge jump and chance for vertical takedowns. Take the same shortcuts for the second lap and be sure to boost the entire time (especially after the large jump bonus). Crash - Deconstruction Site Gold $3,000,000 Silver $2,000,000 Bronze $1,000,000 Hit the ramp and as you are in the air, aim for the nearest vehicle so when you land you smack right into it. When you get your crashbreaker, steer your ride to the other lane so no traffic can pass. Should be an easy gold, just make sure you hit a car after the jump or else the traffic "jam" wont happen. Road Rage - Short Forwards Weight Class: Light, Super Light Laps N/A Timer: 60 seconds Gold: 7 Takedowns Silver: 4 Takedowns Bronze: 2 Takedowns Choose a light and fast vehicle so you can sustain a bit more damage before being totaled. When the event starts, follow the other racers and stay with the group, if one veers off into a shortcut or other route leave it be. You want to stay with multiple cars so your chances of quick takedowns are higher. Use the environment to your advantage, push opponents into poles or walls if you can and always try to shunt them into oncoming traffic. The best advice is to get used to slamming cars from the side into walls or poles, instant takedown. As long as you keep getting takedowns the time will extend and you can continue for the gold. Road Rage strategy is the same for all Road Rage events. Crash - Cars Attacks Gold $7,000,000 Silver $4,000,000 Bronze $2,000,000 Head towards the ramp but instead of using it to jump, slam into one of the semis to cause a pileup on that side. Use your crashbreaker to block the other side of the road, and if you did it right you should have no problem scoring gold here. If you want to, you can bump the car in front of you at the start (to shoot it into traffic) and then take the ramp to the buses below. Either way, it's the same. Crash - Exploding Bay Gold $12,000,000 Silver $9,000,000 Bronze $6,000,000 Drive up the ramp, knocking the bus into the semis below as you make your jump. In the air try to steer towards the nearest moving semi on the far lane. Once you get your crashbreaker, use it to crash into the other lane for maximum pileup. Grand Prix 1 Weight Class: Light, Super Light Races: 3 Gold: 1st place (most points across the event) Silver: 2nd place Bronze: 3rd place Points per race: 1st 6 2nd 4 3rd 3 4th 2 5th 1 6th 0 Race 1: 2 laps - Motor City Avoid shortcuts until you pass the first major curve and make it into the alleys, then take the two warehouse shortcuts there (first is on the left, and the second is on the right after you exit the first) for a high lead. The CPU racers don’t follow you into these warehouses often after usually are right on the main road behind you when you exit. Make use of the heavy traffic on the main street curves and try to check traffic into racers for traffic check takedowns. Learn the drift needed for the major curves on the first lap so you can perform them correctly on the second. Race 2: 1 lap - Sunshine Keys Stay on the main road for the race but drive into oncoming traffic (wrong side of the road) to build your boost. Avoid the shortcuts in this race as they will only slow you down because you need to build boost constantly to stay ahead. Ram and slam the other racers if they get close, trying for a takedown and make sure you boost the entire time. This is only one lap so you have to finish in the top three if not first place. Race 3: 1 lap - Lone Peak From the start, take the shortcuts on the right to jump to first place and then stay on the right road, taking the shortcut on the left up the hill for a jump which yields bonuses and boost. As you exit this alley, take the shortcut right in front of you to stay ahead. As you exit, take the left shortcut near the curve and follow the shortcuts in front of you until you reach the hangar area. When you exit to the freeway take the shortcut between lanes to get to the finish line quickly. If you took all of the shortcuts here you should have had no problem finishing this race in first. ~O0==============={Angel Valley}===============0O~ Crash - Hollywood Spills Gold $6,000,000 Silver $3,000,000 Bronze $1,500,000 As you start bump the small vehicles right in front of you (so they hit the semis and buses) and continue driving to the ramp (right). Control your car in the air so you come in and hit the bus passing. Use your crashbreaker to crash into the other lane and keep both lanes blocked. ~O0==============={Preview - Angel Valley}===============0O~ Gold: 1:36:00 Silver: 1:57:00 Bronze: 2:25:00 You drive the Modified R185 DX in this event and have to complete the lap in the allotted time to earn medals. Take the first shortcut on the left and be careful to dodge the pillars or you will crash. Take the two alley shortcuts afterward to shave off some time. You have to boost throughout the event to even get near the gold so check traffic and drive into oncoming traffic when you are on the main road. Take note that when you enter the rural area again, you are nearing the finish line and you have to push for the final time. Once you have the shortcuts down to where you can boost throughout the entire event, getting gold will be no problem. ====== ===================================================================== Rank 2 Unsafe ===== ==================================================================== * ~O0==============={Eternal City}===============0O~ Burning Lap - Long Forwards Gold: 1:56.00 Silver: 2:21.00 Bronze: 2:55.00 You have to drive the Works R170 ST in this trial, time is tight, and the track is long. The chain of shortcuts in the beginning (starts after the first curve and is on the right) will help you through the start quickly. After the chain of shortcuts, follow the main road (avoiding the next shortcut on either side) and then proceed to take the rest of the shortcuts that you can reach to avoid curves and gain time. If you are struggling to make it to a shortcut, as some of them require sharp drifts to enter, just pass the event with silver or bronze and try for the gold again. You must utilize the shortcuts here or the time will be too close. Race - Long Forwards Weight Class: Light, Super Light Laps 1 Gold: 1st place Silver: 2nd place Bronze: 3rd place Choose a super light vehicle and be sure to take every shortcut as the other racers are fast and aggressive. If a racer follows you into a shortcut, try to shove it into a wall or pillar as most of the shortcuts are in narrow alleys or halls. If you crash so much as once here it will be hard to get back into first place, so be cautious of the narrow alleys yourself. Crash - Road to Ruins Gold $3,000,000 Silver $1,500,000 Bronze $600,000 Head straight down the road hitting any cars in front of you, and slam into a bus or semi at the cross road. Use your crashbreakers to block the other side of the road. Once the entire intersection is blocked off, you should rack up the damage points. Road Rage - Long Reverse Weight Class: Light, Super Light Laps N/A Timer: 60 seconds Gold: 7 Takedowns Silver: 4 Takedowns Bronze: 2 Takedowns Choose a light and fast vehicle so you can sustain a bit more damage before being totaled. Road Rage strategy is the same for all Road Rage events, stay with the other racers and take them out! Race - Long Reverse Weight Class: Light, Super Light Laps 1 Gold: 1st place Silver: 2nd place Bronze: 3rd place Choose either a light or super light vehicle but make sure it has a fast top speed. Be sure to take the two jump shortcuts after the freeway and the tunnel shortcut that is right after you re-enter the city. The rest of the shortcuts can be difficult to enter without slowing down since the track is in reverse so just take the main roads for the rest of the lap while boosting the whole while. ~O0==============={White Mountain}===============0O~ Crash - Swiss Roll Gold $6,000,000 Silver $3,000,000 Bronze $750,000 Make your way down the road (right hand side), hitting all the cars on the way to the intersection. Crash into the vehicles there and use your crashbreaker to block the other side of the road, effectively blocking the entire intersection. Burning Lap Reverse Gold: 2:21.00 Silver: 2:51.00 Bronze: 3:32.00 You have to drive the Prototype R175 ST in this trial and time is tight so make use of boosts and shortcuts. Take the left road at the fork and take the shortcut jump as you climb the mountain (be sure to gain speed or you wont make the jump). Shortly after is another jump shortcut to take. When you enter the fishing village, take the unmarked curve left (before the marked road's curve) for a nice shortcut through the village. After your second mountain climb, skip the shortcut alongside the road as it tends to slow you rather than help. The finish line is shortly after that last shortcut, make sure you are boosting as much as possible (uphill especially). Crashbreaker Preview Race - Forwards Weight Class: Light, Super Light laps: 1 Gold: 1st place Silver: 2nd place Bronze: 3rd place This race will introduce you to crashbreakers, a way to explode your car after a wreck in an attempt to takedown the car that wrecked you (or any others). Initiating a crashbreaker will drain your boost meter but if you takedown an opponent during it, the meter refills. If you know other racers are near, it is a good idea to use a crashbreaker when you wreck. If you are alone, well, don’t use it at the cost of all of your boost. Press 'B' to use the crashbreaker after a wreck, and use the LS to control the aftertouch of your vehicle. Take the cliff shortcut to the right as you descend but don’t fall off! This is a good chance to knock a racer off of the cliff if you can, otherwise just use it as the shortcut it is. Hone your drifting skills on the way down the spiral mountain, and take the shortcut at the bottom on the right (pier). Take the two jump shortcuts on the way down the second time and race to the finish taking the right road at the fork to save time! This is one of those races where the shortcuts boost you to the lead and leave everyone else far behind, so make sure you take them! Crash - Dangerous Swerves Gold $9,000,000 Silver $5,000,000 Bronze $1,500,000 Drive down the left side of the road as far as you can before crashing into the traffic on the right side (usually you will get halfway or so) and use your crashbreaker to block the left side. Easy enough, all of the traffic is on the bridge. Eliminator - Forwards Choose a fast vehicle and make sure you take the same shortcuts as the you did in the crashbreaker preview race here, especially the pier and jump ones. You have to stay ahead of last place throughout and make sure you are in first with a lead when only two racers remain. If it is down to you and another racer and they are right on you, try to take them down with traffic or pushing them into a wall or guardrail. Grand Prix 2 Weight Class: Light, Super Light Races: 3 Gold: 1st place (most points across the event) Silver: 2nd place Bronze: 3rd place Points per race: 1st 6 2nd 4 3rd 3 4th 2 5th 1 6th 0 Race 1: 1 lap - White Mountain Take the two jump shortcuts early on and the shortcuts in the village as well. Be sure to boost while climbing the mountain and drift while descending it. The jumps in the beginning alone should give you a great lead on the other racers but if you need to, take the shortcut at the end to line anyone neck and neck with you up for a last ditch effort takedown on the bridge. An easy first place but taking 2nd or even 3rd will not hurt too much in a Grand Prix. Race 2: 1 lap - Eternal City Be sure to take the two jump shortcuts after the freeway and the tunnel shortcut that is right after you re-enter the city. The rest of the shortcuts can be difficult to enter without slowing down since the track is in reverse so just take the main roads for the rest of the lap while boosting the whole while. If you don’t crash, you should come in first easily as long as you take the early shortcuts and boost as much as possible. Race 3: Central Route Take the right shortcut early on and drive up the stairs to the high levels of the alleys for chances at vertical takedowns. Take the main road a bit until you see the next shortcut to take. From there, you can exit and see another.
