----------------------------------------------------------------------- Maximo FAQ & Walkthrough made by Kildread2 (Kildread2@hotmail.com) ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Contents: 1. Basics & Techniques 2. Weapons & Items 3. Hidden Chests 4. Walkthrough 5. Extras 6. Credits & Legal Stuff ----------------------------------------------------------------------- 1. Basics & Techniques This section explains various techniques you can perform in the game, the abilities you can obtain later (Those in Lock-Spots). Most of the basics are already covered in the manual, but just in case somebody doesn't have it with their used copy... Not all the basics are covered, just what I thought was worthwhile/not obvious. ********************************BASICS********************************* +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ATTACKING+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Maximo can perform various sword strikes with the Square and Triangle buttons, not much except overhead slashes, frontal slashes and such, after performing a double-jump (Which you can easily do by pressing the jump button a 2nd time while in the air) you can perform a downward strike. As well, obtaining a shield will let you block hits, but take heed that shields are NOT indestructibles, they wear out as you use them. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++ITEMS IN THE FIELD++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Enemies drop stuff you can collect, levels have items lying around for you to collect, as well, each level has a set "structure" that will release spirits once destroyed for you to collect, the structure changes for each level, from a tombstone to a snowman... etc. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++MASTERY+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ All the "regular" stages count toward mastery, the "central" (Or, as I like to call them, "Hubs", levels where you can choose your next destination) levels for each world reset content everytime you enter them, use those to restock on money. As for mastery itself, you need to collect every single item that's in the stage, not counting items dropped by enemies and Prize Wheels. You need to kill every enemy in the stage by yourself, dropping them in pits/lava/other lethal areas will sometimes give you the % for it, sometimes not, so you'll (usually, to my annoying experience) have to come back and kill the pesky critter you let be killed by something non-Maximo. As well, you need to shatter every structure for spirits in every level, as well as opening every chest, COUNTING hidden ones. One thing to note is that the stages keep track of your % and if you save once done, you can return to the stage you didn't finish and do what you haven't done, you don't need to re-do everything. All the stages will have their stuff back (The Mastery stages will NOT regenerate items in Prize Wheels, however), but what you did open before is already counted as done. The monster generators don't need to be emptied from all their monsters, you just need to destroy the generator itself. The hardest % to get in each stage is the hidden chests, which I made a guide for them apart fro mthe main walkthrough. Other than that, every treasure is in the open, apart from a few partially hidden vials and money, it's easy to get everything. Take note that some enemies need to be triggered by stepping in a specific spot for them to appear. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++HEALTH+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ There's a max of 4 bars of health you can have, if one of them empties, you LOSE the Health Bar (As in, refill it) until you collect an armor piece, which are rarer than regular health. In other words, you'll have to stay in armor and not waltz around in boxers all the time. You can only attain the 4rth Health Bar with an Hammer & Anvil power-up. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++SAVING+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Only in Magic Pools can you save your game for 100 coins, try to always keep as much on yourself so you don't get to a save point and are broke. You will also need 100 coins to warp from a level to another with the pool. You'll also run in checkpoints during levels that will enable you to restart from that location should you die in this level, you can't officially save at those locales however. Should you restart at one, the chests you had opened will re-appear, but be replaced by Mimics, so beware. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++LOCK-SPOTS+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ When Maximo dies, he loses all the abilities he amassed, the only quirk to that is that those you currently had in your Lock Spots will be kept even in death. You obtain additional Lock Spots as you kill bosses. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++DEATH++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Should you lose all your lives, you'll receive another visit by your friend from the underworld, the Grim Reaper, who will kindly come to take your soul unless you can "bribe" him off with Death Coins. Every time you pay him off to obtain more lives, his price will go up, as such, you do NOT want to make a frequent visit. ******************************ABILITIES******************************** +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++SECOND-STRIKE+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Description- 2 arrows pointed up while following the round shape of the lock on a green background. Using this lets maximo chain 2 quick slashes ahead of him while attacking. How To- Press the Square button twice. Where First Seen- Dropped by a Skeleton in Grave Danger after the first checkpoint. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++THROW SHIELD++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Description- A single arrow depicting an inverted U from the lower-left to lower-right parts of the lock circle, going in clockwise direction on deep blue background. This lets Maximo throw his current shield ahead of him, if it's a Magic Shield, it will do a special effect as well. The range of the throw isn't all that far and you damage your shield when it hits anything, not that useful with your basic shield. Check the magic shields' descriptions for the information on their individual throws. How To- Press Circle to throw your Shield out. Where First Seen- Dropped by a skeleton before the Exit Crystal in Grave Danger. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++MIGHTY BLOW+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Description- An explosion-like white diagram on green background in the lock spot. This lets you perform a stab while running, good for rushing attacks. You'll stop a little before being able to move again, but the hit of the blow should push away your opponents, leaving them too far to hit you. How To- Just press Triangle when running. Where First Seen- Dropped by a Skeleton after the 2nd checkpoint in Grave Danger. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++MAGIC BOLT+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Description- A meteorite form on red background. Using this lets you use the power of a sword enchantment as a projectile, using 2 charges each time you use it. It's useless without a sword enchantment as well. Most of the projectiles are pretty weak, use them only if you need a ranged attack. (Check the description of sword enchantments in items for the effect of the Magic Bolt for each of them). How To- Press Triangle 2 times in consecution. Where First Seen- Dropped by a skeleton near the beginning of Dead Heat. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++DOOMSTRIKE+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Description- A simple skull on red background. Using this lets you use the power of a sword enchantment as an area attack, using 4 charges each time you use it. Pretty powerful to clear out mobs, the cost is a bit steep per use, so keep it for groups of enemies you have problem with. It's useless without a sword enchantment. (Check the description of sword enchantments in items for the effect of the Doomstrike for each of them). How To- Press X two times to double jump and quickly press Triangle 2 times while in the air to perform the strike. Where First Seen- Dropped by a zombie after the 2nd checkpoint in Coffin Canyon. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++SHIELD OF MIDAS++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Description- An image of a vortex on a deep blue background. With this power, each time you block with your shield, red energy will appear aroudn your shield, all riches and such will be drawn to it like a magnet, ideal to grab stuff you can't reach or is too hard to reach. Combining this with Throw Shield, each time you throw the shield, it will attract every riches nearby to it, so you can grab stuff from even farther. Take note that it will replace your current shield enchantment when you collect it. How To- Press L2 to activate it. Where First Seen- Just laying on the ground along the main path after the 2nd checkpoint in Coffin Canyon. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++LENORE'S KISS+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Description- Lips on pink background, they have no game use, but if you have all 4 of them when saving, you'll open up an extra. How To- Has no game use. Where First Seen- Obtained ONLY after rescuing Lenore in the first world, you NEED to choose it otherwise you won't have it (That means passing up the save opportunity or the Full Armor). ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++MASK OF SORROW+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Description- A sad theater mask on dark yellow background. Its power is only available when you obtain enough armor pieces to achieve invincibility for a short period of time. With this on, you'll kill every enemy from a single touch (As Maximo is now an undead), making invinciblity even more useful than it already was. This DOESN'T work on bosses, as the game says it itself. Also note that while undead, you're not longer slowed down by shallow water, as well as not slipping on ice anymore. As a skeleton, Maximo also seems to move faster. How To- Just collect enough armor pieces to achieve temporary invinciblity and it will kick in automaticly. Where First Seen- On top of one of the buildings past the 2nd checkpoint in Watery Grave. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++LONG SWORD+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Description- A white sword on red background. Its power is to give more length to your weapon, so the range of each strike is longer. It doesn't seem to change the damage dealt in any way and the length added is of about 1/2 of your original sword. How To- It's always in use with no button presses. Where First Seen- Dropped by one of the skeletons past the 1st checkpoint in Watery Grave. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++INCREASED ARMOR++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Description- A white representation of an anvil & hammer. Collecting this will let you have to a maximum of 4 health bars instead of 3, making you endure more hits, as well as making it harder to attain invincibility. It will also grant you a free health bar as soon as you collect it (So consider it like a Suit of Armor as well). How To- It's always in use with no button presses. Where First Seen- Dropped by one of the zombies around the portal to Quick And The Dead in The Magic Tree. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++GOLD SEEKER++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Description- 6 drop-like images sent like an explosion on red background. The power of this ability is to send a green shockwave around you (While performing a Downward Strike) of about medium length that will knock away enemies, BUT the main use is to bounce off treasure chests. By doing so it will unearth any hidden chests it touches, VERY useful if you're not using a walkthrough to find the chests, the usefulness goes up with Wider Shockwave too (Trust me). How To- Just execute a standard Downward Strike and the shockwave is sent. X, X and Triangle after the last jump. Where First Seen- Dropped by a crocodile near the start of Voodoo Village. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++MAMBA MARIE'S KISS+++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Description- Lips on green background, they have no game use, but if you have all 4 of them when saving, you'll open up an extra. How To- Has no game use. Where First Seen- Obtained ONLY after rescuing Mamba Marie in the 2nd world, you NEED to choose it otherwise you won't have it (That means passing up the save opportunity or the Full Armor). ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++WIDER SHOCKWAVE++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Description- 2 white circles on red background. Having this ability doubles the range of the shockwave you send when doing a Downward Strike. Not much by itself since it just knocks back enemies, but combined with other shockwave related abilities, it's a good support. How To- Just execute a standard Downward Strike. X, X and Triangle at the peak of your jump. Where First Seen- Dropped by a frozen zombie near the beginning of Shiver Me Timbers. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++FURIOUS SPIN ATTACK++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Description- 2 arrows going around the circle and pointing at each other's ends on green background. This power lets you execute a longer spin attack that will strike any enemies coming near you, as well it prevents you from being very precise on timing if you use the Spin Attack to nail ghosts and such. How To- Press Square while rotating the control stick counterclockwise. Where First Seen- Dropped by a skeleton near the start of Go With The Floe. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++SHIELD OF STORMS++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Description- A white repsentation of a geyser coming below on deep-blue background. Blocking with this shield will send a short wind in front of you that will blow back attackers, useful if you're getting surrounded, but otherwise it's just a defensive tactic. When thrown, it sends a whirlwind extending above and below the shield that will damage enemies it touches. Even if it's the whirlwind that touches the enemy and not the shield, you'll still lose shield durability. Take note that picking this up will replace your previous shield enchantment. How To- Press L2 to activate it. Where First Seen- Dropped by a skeleton after the first checkpoint in Go With The Floe. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++HOVERING SHIELD+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Description- A white representation of a spinning fan with 2 blades on dep blue background. With this power you can make your shield hover indefinitivly at the end of its throwing distance. I haven't found a real use for this, maybe in conjunction with other shield enchatments there is a use, but otherwise there really is no point to this ability. It requires Throw Shield to work. How To- Hold down the Circle button when first throwing the shield and it will hover in place at the end of its throw until you release the button. Where First Seen- Dropped by a yeti after the first checkpoint in Cannonball Run. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++AURORA LEE'S KISS+++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Description- Lips on deep-blue background, they have no game use, but if you have all 4 of them when saving, you'll open up an extra. How To- Has no game use. Where First Seen- Obtained ONLY after rescuing Aurora Lee in the 3rd world, you NEED to choose it otherwise you won't have it (That means passing up the save opportunity or the Full Armor). +++++++++++++++++++++++++++SHIELD OF THUNDER+++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Description- A white representation of a lightning bolt on deep-blue background. Blocking with this shield will damage any enemy that strikes you (In other words, for a point of durability, you'll damage the enemy, it's also more lethal than the Shield of Storms). Throwing this shield whill make a stream of lightning bolts crash all along the forward trajectory of the shield, but no effect when the shield is coming back at you. Even if it's the bolt that touches the enemy and not the shield, you'll still lose shield durability. Take note that picking this up will replace your previous shield enchantment. How To- Press L2 to activate it. Where First Seen- Dropped by a skeleton near the start of Infernal Devices. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++RING OF PAIN++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Description- A white representation of a shockwave with square edges instead of circles on red background. With this, everytime yo uperform a Downward Strike, blades will come out of the ground around you and damage everybody they touch, the nice thing about this is that the blades use no charges for your sword, so if you want to save up on Armageddon uses, this is the ability to use. Very useful combined with Wider Shockwave and ideal for clearing out groups as you won't just push them back this time. How To- Just execute a standard Downward Strike. X, X and Triangle at the peak of your jump. Where First Seen- Dropped by a zombie near the start of Crushed Spirits. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++SEPHONIE'S KISS++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Description- Lips on red background, they have no game use, but if you have all 4 of them when saving, you'll open up an extra. How To- Has no game use. Where First Seen- Obtained ONLY after rescuing Sephonie in the 4th world, you NEED to choose it otherwise you won't have it (That means passing up the save opportunity or the Full Armor). ----------------------------------------------------------------------- 2. Weapons & Items This section lists every weapon and item available in the game for use by Maximo, as well as their specifications, etc... This includes power-ups, money, weapon magic and all that you can collect. *********************************ITEMS********************************* +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++COINS+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Description: Available in various forms, you'll find these in chests or just lying on the ground. Enemies will also drop these. A single coin is worth, well, obviously 1 Coin. A Bag of Coins is worth 5 of them and a Diamond is worth 10. Use: You use them to buy stuff, save your game or travel from level to level. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++PRIZE WHEELS+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Description- A globe-like structure that contains a single item. Spinning circles turn around the object as it stands on top of a pedestal. Use- For a certain amount of money (Depends on the item), you can buy the item when a green "!" appears above Maximo, a red "?" means you can't buy it yet. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++CHESTS++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Description- Coming in two varieties, metal or wooden, The metal kind are locked and require an Iron Key to open, they usually hold better goodies than the wooden version, which you can open without any specific item. Some chests might be, in fact, mimics, so beware. Use- Open, get item, rejoice. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ARMOR+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Description- A simple suit of armor for you to pick up. Use- Collecting it adds a single Life Bar to your health, you can't have more than 3 of them, collecting an armor when yo uhave 3 will grant you a temporary moment of invincibility. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++SPIRIT ITEMS+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Description- Present in every level with small sparks swirling around them, they change shapes fro mlevel to level. Tombstones, lights, snowmen, etc... Use- Break them to free Spirits, collect them quickly before they fade in thin air. Collecting 50 Spirits will award you a single Death Coin. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++KEYS+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Description- Keys found either in chests or in plain sight, come in 2 varieties, Iron or Gold. You can carry 9 Iron Keys and only 1 Gold Key. Use- The Iron Keys are used to open Locked Chests as well as some doors to optional areas while the Gold Keys are used to open doorways to the way forward. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++HEALTH++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Description- Small vials of green liquid dropped by enemies or just lying there. They can also be found as Red Vials, which are more efficient. Use- Collecting one will refill part of your health (1/2 of an health bar), but will NOT add an health bar, so if you lost one you will not get it back via green potions. A Red Vial will completly refill your current Health bar, but it will still not add any. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++SWORD RECHARGE++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Description- Looks like a sword surrounded by 5 triangles, usually dropped by enemies. Use- Collecting one will refill 5 charges for the current sword enchantment you're using. ******************************FLAME TONGUE***************************** Description- Imbues your sword with the elemental power of Fire until you use up all 20 charges of the weapon, then it reverts to your basic sword. Powers- Basic: A basic strike with the Flame Tongue will do nothing apparent, but deal more damage to the undead you're facing. It's a power-boost and not much else. Each successful hit will remove a charge. Magic Bolt: Combined with the Magic Bolt, a strike from this weapon will send a small fireball straigth ahead of you at the cost of 2 charges, regardless if you hit something or not. You don't need to be extremly precise as there's some sort of auto-aiming so as long as you face the general direction of the enemy, it should hit. Doomstrike: Combined with Doomstrike, hitting with this weapon will cause a small fire shockwave to expand from your area and hit all enemies touching it, short range and uses up 4 charges. Ideal for clearing out mobs, especially those near the Spirit Collector. Where First Seen- Inside of a Locked Chest (Hidden too) in Grave Danger. *******************************PURE BLADE****************************** Description- Imbues your sword with the power of Light until you use up all 20 charges of the weapon (It looks like a light saber), then it reverts to your basic sword. Powers- Basic: A basic strike with the Pure Blade will do nothing apparent, but deal more damage to the undead you're facing. It's a power-boost and not much else. Each successful hit will remove a charge, unlike the Flame Tongue, the Pure Blade is only good against the Undead, as well, it's stronger than the Flame Tongue against them. Magic Bolt: Sends a blast of holy energy forward, it will home on enemies in front of you, so don't aim extremly precisely. Doomstrike: Sends multiple bolts of energy that will home on the nearest targets, not all that useful considering most enemies can be disposed via basic swordplay... Where First Seen- Dropped by a zombie near the beginning of Watery Grave. *******************************FROSTBITER****************************** Description- Imbues your sword with the elemental power of Ice until you use up all 20 charges of the weapon, then it reverts to your basic sword. Powers- Basic: This sword doesn't work like all others, most enemies will be frozen on the first hit and will require an overhead slash to shatter them (Killing them, in fact). It makes disposing of hard enemies easy, but not many enemies are susceptible to Ice and the 2 hits required to kill ANY enemy will use up your charges quick... Magic Bolt: It will send a quick spray of freezing mist in an arc ahead of you, freezing and maybe killing what it touches, good for freezing up groups, but mostly useless, it has a medium range, like the regular Throw Shield ability. Doomstrike: Using this will make hard ice pellets fall all around Maximo, the impacts will make the pellets explode in blue mist, damaging all it touches, it seems to have a little more range than the Flame Tongue's Doomstrike, but it's not a perfect circle. Where First Seen- Inside a locked chest in the first part of Quick And The Dead. *******************************ARMAGEDDON****************************** Description- Imbues your sword with pure destructive power until you use up all 20 charges of the weapon, then it reverts to your basic sword. Powers- Basic: Produces a long noise when you swing it, it's powerful against apparently ANY enemy and pretty rare to find. It's the bane of bosses as well, if you can get one before the last bosses, do so. Magic Bolt: Sends a wave of purple energy on the ground ahead of you, damaging (Most likely killing) anything it touches, it follows the ground, so you can't use it off platforms or as a projectile weapon. It goes to a fairly long distance ahead of you and the wave is fairly large. Doomstrike: A meteor shower occurs in a random pattern around Maximo, it lasts longer than it takes for him to recover from the Downward Strike. If you move, the meteor shower follows you. The number of meteors seems to depend on the amount of enemies around you. Deadly. Where First Seen- In the air above a small platform after the 1st checkpoint of Infernal Devices. *********************************SHIELD******************************** Description- A round circle representing a shield, not much else to say about that one. Use- When you collect it, it refills 5 hits of your Shield's durability or replaces it by a standard 10 hits Iron Shield if you had lost it. *******************************IRON SHIELD***************************** Description- A shield with a star pattern on it. Use- Completly replaces your shield with 10 durability points, if you had a better shield (Like Silver), it just restores some durability, but doesn't remove the 5 added durability points. Where First Seen- Very rare, no enemy has ever dropped this item for me and I've only first seen it on the spinning ship in Dead In The Water. ******************************SILVER SHIELD**************************** Description- Not sure if it is exact, but the design on top of your shield seems to change to that of a 5-leafed clover design. Use- Once you collect it, 5 points of durability will be added to your shield, so it can take 5 more hits before breaking. Location- Bought for 150 Coins inside the Prize Wheel after the 2nd checkpoint in Bad To The Bone (The Mystery is randomized, it might be something else). *******************************GOLD SHIELD***************************** Description- Changes your shield's design to that of a yellow eagle insignia. Use- Once you collect it, 10 points of durability will be added to your basic shield (5 if you had a Silver Shield), so it can take 10 more hits before breaking. Location- Bought for 300 Coins inside the Prize Wheel at the start of The Siege. *******************************POW BOXERS****************************** Description- A pair of deep blue boxers with "POW" written on them. Use- I haven't found any other use to these than "style"... rather than those with hearts on them. Location- Bought for 150 Coins inside the Prize Wheel before the first checkpoint in Dead Heat (The Mystery is randomized, it might be something else). *****************************MONOGRAM BOXERS*************************** Description- A pair of boxers with a blue "M" on them. Use- Same as for the POW Boxers, these seem to be there only for style. Location- Bought for 150 Coins inside the Prize Wheel before the first checkpoint in Dead Heat (The Mystery is randomized, it might be something else). *******************************COW BOXERS****************************** Description- A pair of boxers with a cow pattern, as in white boxers with random black stains on them. Use- Same as for the POW Boxers, these seem to be there only for style. Location- Bought for 150 Coins inside a Prize Wheel near the end of Dead In The Water. *******************************FOOT CHEESE***************************** Description- A chunk of stinky cheese, Maximo will rub it on his shoes, making them stink. Use- What's the point? Simple, once you've rubbed the cheese on your shoes, you'll be able to run at normal speed on decayed ground all around the first levels and the hands that pop-up will no longer deal any damage to you, so no need to jump your way around. It's a bit costy just to do that, considering you can only buy it early if you do a few re-runs inside Grave Danger. Location- At the very beginning of Grave Danger in the Prize Wheel, for 500 Coins. I've also gotten a 2nd useless one in a Mystery Prize Wheel. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- 3. Hidden Chests Yup, you need to collect those chests in order to achieve Mastery, and yes, most of them are of the "popping-outta-nowhere" variety. The list's there, but the order might not be, depending on how linear stages might be, they'll be in the same order as in the walkthrough however. You usually need to jump on the ground near the area of the chest for it to appear. *****************************GRAVE DANGER****************************** Chest #1 (Bag of Coins)- From the starting point, head for the tree on your left and jump around the left side of it. Chest #2 (2 Bags of Coins)- From the first checkpoint, continue along the stage until you spot the gold door. Jump on the grass between the door itself and the tree in the middle of the road.
