I will only update the guide if any vital information is missing, I've made a major error, or a reader contributes something worthy. (September 26th, 2006) [66KB] Version 1.01: Corrected some minor errors. (September 28th, 2006) [67KB] Version (Final): I feel that I've covered the majority of things in the game. Seeing as Max Payne is a relatively old game, I wouldn't expect many contributions, so I've decided that this is the final version. I do not intend to ever update this FAQ. I've also removed my contact information. I don't see the point in keeping it here as I can't tell you anything the guide doesn't. I hope you enjoyed reading this walkthrough. (September 29th, 2006) [67KB] =============================================================================== 04.......Story =============================================================================== Max Payne started out as a cop for the NYPD. After turning down an offer to join the DEA, Max comes home to find his wife and baby daughter murdered. He kills the perpetrators; three junkies high on the designer drug Valkyr. Three years after the death of his family, Max is an undercover agent for the DEA. He is undercover to infiltrate the mob, who are distributing Valkyr throughout the city. Max's quest for revenge takes him down to the dark depths of hell, where he must confront the people responsible for the nightmare that is Valkyr. =============================================================================== 05.......Controls =============================================================================== These are the default controls... D Pad: Change weapon. Left Analog: Move character. Right Analog: Turn and aim. Triangle: Equip your best weapon. Circle: Take a painkiller. X: Zoom in with scoped weapon. Square: Reload weapon. L1: Shoot-Dodge. L2: Activate Bullet Time. R1: Shoot/use weapon. R2: Jump and roll. L3: Crouch. Select: Go to the main menu. Start: Pause the game. =============================================================================== 06.......Bullet Time/Shootdodge =============================================================================== If Max is encountered by numerous, heavily armed enemies, he can activate bullet time, which will slow the action around him, but still allow him to aim his weapon(s) in real time. The more enemies Max takes out, the more bullet time he will gain. By activating shootdodge, Max will fly to the side, in any direction you want him to. =============================================================================== 07.......Weapons/Items =============================================================================== There are a plethora of weapons available throughout the game. Some weapons are useful when encountered by a few enemies, whereas others are more useful when up against tougher, better equipped enemies. Here are the different weapons available and some information on them... ---------- Lead Pipe ---------- Useful for smashing open crates and boxes containing painkillers and ammo. Not as good as the baseball bat when in combat. ------------- Baseball Bat ------------- This weapon is only useful when enemies are extremely close to you. It is useful for smashing open crates and boxes, which contain ammo or painkillers. It is only useful in combat when up against un-armed and weak enemies. -------- Beretta -------- The basic handgun that is used by most enemies, but usually the weaker ones. It is an accurate weapon that has a big chamber. There is plenty of ammo available for this gun. Only useful when encountered by a small number of weak enemies. -------------- Dual Berettas -------------- Fantastic! Two berettas can be lethal, especially in firefights with large groups of enemies. They are useful when used in bullet time. ------- Ingram ------- A sub-machine gun reminiscent of the Uzi. This weapon isn't too accurate from range and there isn't much ammo available for it early on. It is most effective when encountered by one or two enemies. ------------- Dual Ingrams ------------- Deadly. If Max has two Ingrams, he can take down a large number of strong enemies in a matter of seconds. Especially useful in bullet time. ------------- Desert Eagle ------------- There isn't a lot of ammo available for this extremely powerful handgun. I'd advise you to use this weapon against enemies close by. It isn't useful from range. -------------------- Pump-Action Shotgun -------------------- An extremely powerful weapon when used against enemies close to your current position. Not useful at all over medium to long range. ------------------ Sawed-Off Shotgun ------------------ Holds two shells in the chamber. Is only useful against one enemy, because if used when surrounded by a plethora of enemies, you'll be in serious trouble, as you'd have to constantly reload the weapon. The pump-action is more effective. ----------- Jackhammer ----------- THE most powerful shotgun in the game. It carries a large number of bullets and isn't too bad from medium range. One or two shots of this is deadly. Useful in bullet time. ------------- Sniper Rifle ------------- If an enemy is at an extremely long distance, or you simply want to take down an enemy without being noticed immediately, this is the weapon to use. Use bullet time and crouch to get a steady shot. -------------- Colt Commando -------------- Powerful assault rifle used by the most powerful enemies in the game. It is decent from long-medium range and deadly from close range. In my view, it is the most powerful and effective weapon in the game. ---- M79 ---- A grenade launcher. Use this weapon when enemies are coming at you with heavy weapons. Don't stand too close or Max will be seriously injured. Can be useful in bullet time. --------- Grenades --------- Useful for taking down enemies that are hiding behind corners or are using cover. Don't stand too close. ------------------ Molotov Cocktails ------------------ A bottle filled with flammable liquid. When thrown, a ring of fire will erupt around the area and direction it was thrown in. Useful but inaccurate. The Grenades are much more effective. ------------ Painkillers ------------ Can be collected throughout various parts of the game. If Max's health is low, he can take a painkiller, which will increase his health. It is useful to have a large amount of painkillers when confronted by a lot of enemies. =============================================================================== 08.......Characters/Enemies =============================================================================== This section will contain information on the characters you'll meet throughout the game. I'll try to include vital and interesting information. ************************************************************* NOTE: This section contains SPOILERS. Read at your own risk. ************************************************************* ---------- Max Payne ---------- The protagonist. Max was a cop for the NYPD, before his wife and daughter were brutally murdered by crazed junkies high on Valkyr. Three years later, he joins the DEA, working closely with Alex Balder, his trusted friend. He goes undercover to infiltrate the mob, hoping to bring down the people responsible for Valkyr. ------------------------ Michelle Payne and Baby ------------------------ Max's wife and daughter. They're murdered by crazed junkies early on in the game. ------------ Alex Balder ------------ Max's trusted friend and head of the DEA. Alex is one of Max's contacts when undercover. He is murdered by an unknown assailant and Max is framed. ----- B.B. ----- His real name isn't known. He's a cop who is a contact of Max when he is undercover. ------------ Jim Bravura ------------ The deputy chief of the NYPD. He is the man chasing Max Payne for the alleged murder of Alex. -------------------- The Finito Brothers -------------------- Joey and Virgilio Finito are wisecracking mobsters working for Lupino. They take care of his hotel for him. ----------- Candy Dawn ----------- A prostitute who records sex sessions involving her and her 'clients', and then sells the tapes to the highest bidder. A mystery woman has been purchasing her 'One Eyed Alfred' tapes. -------------------------- Frankie 'The bat' Niagara -------------------------- A mobster obsessed with cartoon violence. He beats his victims to death with a baseball bat, leaving a cartoon comic on their dead body. ------------ Jack Lupino ------------ A crazy mobster working with the Punchinello family. He is into the occult, is frequently high on Valkyr, and he thinks that the world is going to end. He owns Ragnarock - a gothic nightclub. ---------------- Vinnie Gognitti ---------------- He has the brains to run the business but lacks guts. Gognitti is Lupino's right hand man. He takes his frustrations out on under aged call girls. ------------ Rico Muerte ------------ He's wanted for several murders in the Chicago area. He owes the Punchinello's, and has come to Lupino's hotel to oversee a major drug deal. --------- Vladimir --------- Head of the local Russian mob. His crew are in a mob war with the Punchinello family. Makes Max a great offer. --------- Mona Sax --------- Hired killer hunting for the Don. Mona wants Punchinello dead because he is constantly beating up her twin sister, Lisa Punchinello. ----------- Boris Dime ----------- Traitor of the Russian mob. He joins Punchinello and controls a major shipment on the Charon. ------------ Kyra Silver ------------ Reporter who appears on the news. She is usually talking about events in the city. ----- Dino ----- Only mentioned once in the game. Was apparently killed by Lupino. ---------- The Mayor ---------- Horne wants him dead because he plans to crack down on Valkyr. ----------------- Lisa Punchinello ----------------- Mona's twin sister and wife of Angelo Punchinello. She is into tarot cards. --------- The Trio --------- The Trio are the Don's notorious henchmen and personal bodyguards. They consist of Vince Mugnaio, Pilot Providence AKA 'Big Brother', and Joe 'Deadpan' Salem. They are cold blooded assassins. ------------------------- Angelo 'Don' Punchinello ------------------------- The head of New York's worst Mafia family. He controls the mob and gives the orders. Is seen as a sadistic wife beater. ------------- Alfred Woden ------------- Head of the Inner Circle. He offers Max a chance to clear his name, but only if he's willing to kill Horne. Horne is blackmailing him with sex tapes involving himself and Candy Dawn, making it difficult for the Inner Circle to stop her. ------------- Nicole Horne ------------- The ultimate enemy. She is responsible for the distribution of Valkyr. If it wasn't for her, Max's family would be alive and well, Valkyr wouldn't cause a problem throughout the city, and Max would never have had to go through a lot of pain. Also owns the Aesir Corporation. --------- Mobsters --------- The weakest enemies in the game. They work for the mob and Punchinello. They usually carry weak weapons and can be taken down quite easily. ------------ Mercenaries ------------ Well trained soldiers working for Horne. Possibly former ex-military. Some of them wear commando masks and carry dangerous weapons. ------------- Killer Suits ------------- The deadliest enemies in the game. They are Horne's personal bodyguards and they carry the most effective weapons. They are trained well and have experience in the secret service/special forces. =============================================================================== 09.......Walkthrough =============================================================================== *************************** Difficulty Level: Fugitive *************************** =============================================================================== 09A.......Part I: The American Dream =============================================================================== New Jersey. Use your dual Berettas and shoot dodge, killing the two mobsters. Take their weapons and get your Desert Eagle ready. Walk down the end of the hall and immediately take out the thug on the left. Walk all the way down the steps and you'll be back on the platform. To the far left is a mobster with a shotgun. Kill him and take his weapon. After you've done this, you can take the painkillers if you need them. Open Vault A and take the explosives. Go to Vault C and look at the piece of paper. Exit the room through Vault B. Be very careful at this point now, especially if you're low on health. As you approach the stairs, activate bullet time and immediately kill the thugs behind the bench. After killing them, walk through the door that's in front of you. ----------------- Stepping on Toes ----------------- After the cutscene, a group of armed men will approach you from the side. Take them out. Keep walking and you'll hear sirens. Stay where you are and get ready for the mobsters. After firing your weapon, three of them will come running to you. Walk through the gates and around the corner. ============================= Chapter 3: Playing It Bogart ============================= Activate bullet time and choose your desired weapon (the Desert Eagle should do the trick). There are some painkillers in the safe. After you've examined the letter, you'll hear guards knocking on the door. They'll bust the door down and come charging at you, so take them down with a powerful weapon. After you've killed them, go downstairs, turn left, and take the painkillers in the cabinet. Near the front of the hotel, you'll be able to listen to the radio. Smash open the windows with your lead pipe and exit the hotel. You'll come to a door at the far end. When you come across the rooftop ledge, wait for the train to make its way past. As soon as the train comes past, immediately hit the jump button. This has to be timed right, so don't worry if you don't get there in the first attempt. It can take some time before you accomplish your goal. ==================================== Chapter 7: Better than the Last One ==================================== Jump down and walk across the platform. Equip your dual Berettas and take down the two mobsters. Follow the trail of blood. Carefully jump across the gap, joining the next rooftop. Once you get to the top of the area, crouch behind the wall, dodging bullets from the Desert Eagle. Equip your Beretta and take down the mobster by the advertisement board. Turn left and walk up the ramp. Immediately shootdodge to the left, killing any mobsters in your path. Watch out for shotgun blasts and incoming Grenades. Go across the stairs and kill the mobsters hiding behind the small wall. Make your way across all of the boards and you should come to a glass roof. Break it open and jump down. Kill the mobsters, take all items in the room, and go through the door. ----------- All a Blur ----------- Walk up the steps and enter the door on the left. Walk down the stairs and enter the door. You'll be able to see a clip of Bravura talking on the TV. Go into the bathroom and collect the painkillers. Behind the door is a man with a shotgun. Take him down in a flash. The other thug will run away. As soon as you come across him, he'll throw a Grenade, so activate bullet time and don't stop moving. Kill the four remaining mob guys. When you enter the next doorway, a Grenade will be thrown in your direction. In order to avoid the blast, roll backwards as soon as you can. Kill the mobster by the door. Now, this is a major battle with Gognitti and his men. Make sure your life is full and you're well equipped. Firstly, deal with the two mobsters that try running up the stairs to your left. Throw a Grenade behind the crate, taking out the mobster. A shotgun equipped thug will come running upstairs. Kill him. Kill the final two mobsters before engaging in battle with Gognitti. Shoot him with your dual Ingrams and he should soon fall. ========================== Chapter 8: A Den of Drugs ========================== Enter the door on your right and pull the catch. Walk to the centre of the room and enter the door to your far left. Kill the mobsters and examine the books. ----------- Ragna Rock ----------- Walk up to the top of the steps. Once there, shootdodge your way into the room on the left, breaking up the V deal. Once you've dealt with the initial set of mobsters, a small group will appear near the barrels. Use the wall as cover. Walk past the barrels and keep turning left. Once you reach the location of the steps, kill the two mobsters at ground level. Two thugs are waiting for you at the top. Deal with them quickly. Exit through the door. Once outside, you'll need to go across to the other door. Kill the mobster below. Now, you'll have to be extremely careful. Once the stage opens up, go through it and then go up the steps. Press 2, 3 and 4. Once you come to the end of the boards, shootdodge to your right, instantly killing the mobster. If you don't kill him quickly, he'll throw a Grenade in your direction. Make your way to the very top. Walk across the first piece of wood and then carefully jump over to the third piece, as the second one will quickly break. Open the door at the end. ===================================== Chapter 9: Straight from a Bad Dream ===================================== Examine all information before preparing for your battle with Lupino and his men. Make your way to the door and press the button to open it. Mobsters will jump from every ledge in numerous directions. Activate bullet time and equip your dual Berettas/Ingrams. Take down every mobster that drops from the top. If you need to stock up on ammo and painkillers, go to the tables. There is plenty of ammo and weaponry. Once you've killed the initial set of mobsters, two or three mobsters will be waiting at the top. Avoid the Molotov Cocktails and use shootdodge to kill them. Once Lupino emerges, shootdodge your way past his two guards. Lupino has Molotov Cocktails and a Sawed-Off Shotgun. Dodge his first two shots and use your Dual Ingrams on him, as he attempts to reload his weapon. He'll go down almost instantly. =============================================================================== 09B.......Part II: A Cold Day in Hell =============================================================================== -------------------- Prologue: Nightmare -------------------- Enter the corridor and keep turning left until you reach the Payne's room. Take a look at the pictures on the wall, examining the photos of Max and Alex Balder. Make your way into the bathroom. It's locked. Instead, walk into the door at the far end. You'll be stuck near a path of blood. Carefully walk across it and you'll bend right. Walk to the end of the current trail of blood and jump to the left line of blood.
