This one covers the GameBoy game Dead-Heat Scramble, the second racing game I've written an FAQ for tonight. Though this isn't focused so much on NASCAR-style racing as it is more like a platformer. Yeah, I don't know much to say about this. But try to enjoy. =~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~= Section Two: Version History **SCRAMBLE_2** =~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~= Final - First and likely only version of this FAQ completed. 11:07 PM 5/11/2012 =~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~= Section Three: Legalities **SCRAMBLE_3** =~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~= This FAQ may not be reproduced under any circumstances except for personal, private use. They will widen/narrow the screen, respectively. Otherwise, N/A. ---------------- General Gameplay ---------------- At the title screen, press Start to begin. When the signal light in the top-right corner of the screen has its bottom bulb lit up, press and hold the A Button to accelerate and move forward. You will be able to move forward at an ever-increasing speed (to a certain point) unless you hit a rival car, an obstacle, or press the B Button to jump and therefore end up slowing down. The goal here is to travel along a usually-linear track for a certain distance. This event is called a "heat". You only have a certain amount of time to travel this distance, so don't screw around. You see your distance-wise progress with the meter below your score in the top-left corner; the timer is the "T#:##:##" in the top-right corner. Of course, you will probably end up hitting rival cars ... in fact, you WANT to. Some of them will drop items; run over them to put them in storage in the "Mechanic's Rack" below your distance meter. We'll discuss them momentarily. Additionally, there are various obstacles to slow you down. Again, they shall be discussed momentarily. That's ... pretty much it. All else that there is to mention is the two-player mode. For that, you'll need to use two GameBoys, two Dead-Heat Scramble game paks, and one GameBoy Link Cable. At the title screen, use Select to opt for the two-player game, and press Start to begin. Select your car with the A or Start Buttons to begin racing. ------- Scoring ------- There first are points awarded for various tasks during normal gameplay: ~~ Making a rival car spin : +500 points ~~ Making a rival car crash: +1,000 points ~~ Bombing a rival car : +5,000 points ~~ Bombing a rock : +10,000 points You will also be awarded bonuses for finishing a heat, and bonuses for having some time left at the end of said heat. The bonus for finishing progressively increases as you do more heats; the timer bonus is based on how many seconds you have left. ----- Items ----- ~~ Nitro: It looks like a canister. Press Up on the D-Pad to use it and increase the car's speed. It can be stored; however, it can't be stored alongside the Bomb for obvious reasons. ~~ Bomb: It looks like a dark circle. Press Up on the D-Pad to use it; it can be used to destroy rival cars (for 5,000 points) and rocks (for 10,000 points). It can be stored; however, it can't be stored along with some Nitro for obvious reasons. ~~ Power-Up: It looks like a star in a sqaure. It activates automatically and provides temporal invincibility. ~~ Magic Tire: It looks like a tire; if you have problems seeing it, it is darker and more lop-sided than a Bomb. It activates by itself and will increase your handling and traction. ~~ Time-Stopper: This looks like a clock. It's effects activate automatically. In a single-player game, it'll stop your timer from going down; in a two-player game, it'll prevent your opponent's Left/Right Buttons (and therefore, steering) from functioning. ~~ Special Item: This one looks like a square with some light-colored stuff inside. Effect and terms of activation are unknown. --------- Obstacles --------- There are five major types of obstacles you'll want to watch out for ... you know, aside from the rival cars. ~~ Blockcade posts simply look like bumps coming out of the ground, reaching to the middle of the track from one wall. You can jump over these or drive around. ~~ Boulders are simply that: large, mostly-spherical rocks that come about. To dodge them, drive around them or use a Bomb on them for 10,000 points. ~~ Bottlenecks are where the track suddenly and briefly narrows, much like the neck of most bottles. The problem with these mostly comes from the fact that there is less width on the track now, so everyone's going to crowd in together, risking a lot of destruction on both sides. ~~ Oil looks like black circles on the ground and, due to their lubricating properties, largely reduce your traction with the ground, making you spin out. Dodge it by driving around or jumping over. ~~ Divider posts are bumps on the ground, like blockcade posts, but they run more in the middle of the road. Unless their string is very, very short, you'll NEED to hang on the edge of the track.
