One person on either side of a small table with a net return a ball back and forth in a rally until the ball is either dead in play or bounces off the table. Each game is a best-of-three matches, with the first person to make it to 11 points the winner (or in cases where both persons get up to 10 points, the first person to get ahead by 2 points). One person starts to serve for the first 5 points, and then switches over to the other person for the next 5 points, and so on. A rally can end in one of several ways: missing your initial serve, your initial serve not bouncing on the opponent's side of the table at all, hitting your net, or bouncing off the side or end of the table. In Battle Ping-Pong, you will never have an issue with two bounces on one side of the table, nor does the ball ever touch the net and still go over. -------- CONTROLS -------- A - Throw the Ball Up (Serving) B - Strike the Ball + Down - Lob + Up - Slice + Left - Angle to the left + Right - Angle to the right Left/Right - Switch direction you are facing with the racket (Only prior to when the ball is near your end) Select - Toggle through Menu Options Start - Pause Game -------------- BASIC GAMEPLAY -------------- Most gameplay is controlled by the B button. Your racket will automatically move to where the ball is when it is hit back to your side of the table. Typically, you should press the B button just after the ball bounces on your side in order to return it properly. Your racket can face either left or right - you can toggle this by pressing the left and right buttons. However, once the ball is near you, the side you are facing is 'set' and pressing and holding the Left/Right button will angle your shot in that direction. It is NOT a very big direction change from testing - the angle of your shot only changes around 5 to 10 degrees, but this can be significant when playing edge balls. --------- EDGE PLAY --------- When you play your ball on the left or right edge, there is the possibility of getting an out by hitting just off the edge of the table. Additionally, due to shots that will sometimes bounce at an angle (most typically your opponent's shots), a ball can conceivably bounce on the edge and then bounce off away from the table, and it is impossible for you to return these shots. For this reason, you may wish to make use of holding the Left/Right button prior to a hit to focus the ball back towards the center zone of the table. While this can make for long rallies, it is better than trying to compete against your opponent in something he typically has a gameplay advantage in. --------------- SLICING/LOBBING --------------- Holding either the Up or Down button when hitting the B button to return a shot allows you to either slice or lob the ball, respectively. Holding Up for a slice should only be done in two circumstances: when the ball bounces near your net, or when the opponent's shot is slow. If you try to slice a fast ball or one that bounces near your end of the table, it will hit the net instead. Also, do NOT slice when a ball makes an angle bounce. If it bounces at an angle, stop holding the Up button and just tap the B button as normal to return the shot. Holding Down for a lob can be done basically any time, but should be done commonly for returning hard shots or balls that bounce near your end so you can control the speed of your opponent's own returns. ------------ VS. COMPUTER ------------ In this mode, you can manually choose any of the eight country teams to play against (Poland, South Korea, Canada, Japan, USSR, USA, Sweden and China). The Panda is not playable against in this mode. --------------- TOURNAMENT MODE --------------- In order, you will play: Poland South Korea Canada Japan USSR USA Sweden China After defeating China, you will then be made to play against a Panda, the tournament champion. -------- CONTINUE -------- Here, you can enter the password to travel to any of the matches past Poland in the Tournament mode (with the exception of the Panda, who does not have a password to reach him - you must defeat China first). You can also use the Stopwatch password to enter Stopwatch mode. ------------- 2-PLAYER MODE ------------- With two players and a link cable and two game carts, you can play a 2- player game of Battle Ping Pong. -------------- STOPWATCH MODE -------------- Entering the password 1199 in the Continue password select gives you access to a stopwatch. You can start and stop it at will. The stopwatch only records the last two records, however. ~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~- Codes -~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~ [CODE] Enter these codes on 1-Player --> Continue. I write FAQs for plenty of obscure old games with no FAQs, and having a physical copy of the game (and even better, a manual) is superior to not.
