The basic game scheme is of a static-screen shooter where you can move your ship all around the screen, where you have to fire at large asteroids and UFOs that threaten to destroy your ship. As just mentioned, your ship can move all across the screen - when you go across a border, you will reappear on the side of the screen that is perpendicularly opposite from where you disappeared off of (not parallel). The ship will also display a measure of Newtonian mechanics - when you stop with the ship's thrust, it will still continue to drift for a short while before stopping. Additionally, if you try to turn directions while moving, you will get a bit of awkward turning before you succeed in changing directions. You can also turn your ship around while static or moving through use of the Left and Right button. Once again Newtonian mechanics applies a little bit here - your ship will continue turning a slight bit after you stop applying thrust. Your ship also has a limited number of angles it can turn at - eight - so you will often find that you are not facing the exact direction you may desire. Lastly, your ship also has the ability to go into 'hyperspace' - this causes it to temporarily disappear off the screen for a few seconds, before reappearing on a random location somewhere else on the screen a couple of seconds later. Note that this is entirely random, so you may land over an asteroid or UFO. Knowing the abilities and limitations of your ship are important - as at the start of the game, you will have several large asteroids coming off the borders of the screens. If even one hits your, your ship is toast. To destroy an asteroid, you need to fire it. At this point, it will break into two smaller asteroids, each of which will break into two further small asteroids, before finally being destroyed. You need to shoot each of these further asteroids to clear them out. As each asteroid gets split, however, the smaller asteroids will move faster, and because they are smaller, they can also be more difficult to keep an eye on as well as to shoot. It is recommended that you focus on taking out smaller asteroids instead of just nilly-willy shooting all the larger asteroids first, or else it can become a headache quickly. Once you clear out all the asteroids, a new wave of asteroids will pop up on screen. Dodge asteroids by thrusting out of the way when needed. If you think you will not be able to dodge an asteroid, use the Hyperspace button - although you may randomly land on a UFO, it is better taking your chances in this case. Finally, you shall get the occasional UFO. The small UFOs will fire directly at your ship, while the larger UFOs will just wander about. If you destroy every asteroid except for one, you can wait for UFOs to come around and eliminate them to run up your score. Unlike the original, however, Missile Command for the Game Boy is slightly different due to hardware limitations. In Missile Command for the Game Boy, you have a static screen. On the bottom of the screen, you have two missile silos that each have 15 missiles, as well as anywhere from one to six buildings. The buildings must be protected from destruction - if you lose all your buildings, you lose the game. From the top of the screen, you will get swarms of enemy fire that come down as lines at several different angles. If a line touched your building, the building will be destroyed. To stop the enemy fire, you must fire a missile out in _front_ of the line of fire. The missile will explode, creating a fireball, and destroy the tip of the enemy fire if it is within the explosion radius. As the game is in black-and-white, there is no obvious missile tip at the end of the enemy swarms, so you will have to make do without a good visual. Also, you will get planes and gliders coming out of the sides of the screens. These can be destroyed for extra points, and they must also be caught within the radius of an explosion. Lastly, UFOs wil come down in the later levels from the top with the enemy swarms. UFOs are far more versatile than the swarms - they will take several seconds while caught in an explosion to be destroyed, and it may be necessary to fire a second missile at it. Each level is played twice. At the end of each play, your remaining buildings and missiles are counted up for extra points. Going from the first play of a level to the second play, any destroyed buildings you have are not rebuilt, but a destroyed missile silo is, and both silos are replenished to 15 missiles each. ------- Scoring ------- Surplus Missiles - 5 each Remaining Buildings - 100 each Swarm - 25 Points Glider - 100 Points Plane - 100 Points UFO - 200 Points -------- Controls -------- A - Fire with the right Silo B - Fire with the left Silo D-Pad - Move the cursor around ------- Options ------- One-Player - One Player Mode Two-Player - Each player plays on the same cart. Once one player finishes a level, the second player plays the same level. ~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~- Levels -~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~ [LEVL] With each level, the score multiplier goes up by 1. So in Level 1, the Scoring is 1X, but in Level 4 the Scoring is 4X. There are six levels altogether. Cairo ----- Points = X1 6 Buildings The first level, Cairo is fairly simple, with lots of enemy swarms, and only the occasional plane and glider crossing the screen. New York -------- Points = X2 5 Buildings In New York, the pace of enemy ups slightly, but not that much. Planes and Gliders come on screen slightly more often. Other than that there is no change from Cairo. London ------ Points = X3 4 Buildings The pace of the swarm ups significantly here, so you will have to be more proactive in taking swarms out before they can hit the bottom. This is also the first level that UFOs begin to show up, and they will require several hits before they are destroyed. Sydney ------ Points = X4 2 Buildings Things will get extremely quick-paced here, so ignore any swarms that will not strike a building or your missile silos, and instead focus on the ones that are on a trajectory to hit the buildings/missiles. Paris ----- Points = X5 1 Building Given that you have only one building left, it is imperative that you protect that building from being destroyed. Swarms also pick up in speed significantly, so you need to keep your two missile silos protected. UFOs will also drift around and move towards your buildings. Given their versatility, you will have to hit it with a missile, then as soon as it clears the fireball, hit it with another missile. Moscow ------ Points = X6 1 Building In Moscow, the jets that fly by will begin to drop bombs. As such, you should upgrade the jets to the first security threat and take them out before one can drop a bomb. Other than that, it is a simple matter of reacting more quickly to the swarms and UFOs than they can hit your building and missile silos. ~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~- Donations/Amazon -~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~ [DONT] I don't really care too much about donations, but if you are feeling generous, feel free to send one via PayPal to gammabetaalphafaqs AT gmail DOT com Alternatively, if you ever order any items from Amazon.com, go to the link below.
