Scrabble is an enjoyable game! Who doesn't enjoy a good game of Scrabble? Well, probably a lot of people in this day and age. I mean, we are constantly bombarded my electronic media and the idea of sitting down to play a board game, especially one about WORDS, is likely foreign to most people... but regardless of that, I still enjoy Scrabble! As much as I may enjoy Scrabble, I should make it clear that this guide will probably never be used FOR the game it was made for... people just aren't clamoring to play an outdated Scrabble game on an outdated system! So while I wrote this guide, I have to recommend to anyone reading this... go out and get 2-3 friends together and play a PHYSICAL game of Scrabble! This guide is a direct result of Gamefaqs collection of faqers trying to put up a complete FAQ for EVERY GameBoy game that was ever released. Speaking of the GameBoy Completion Project, if you want to help we'd love to have you on board. These older games AREN'T that hard to write for! You can find the gamefaqs topic about it here: o http://www.gamefaqs.com/boards/2000094-faq-contributors-general/56763726 You can find the webpage that was made for it here: o http://www.gameboycp.webs.com Anyway, enjoy the guide. Below is the rest of the stuff I put in all my guides, so feel free to shoot me an email or whatnot! ========== FOLLOW ME! ========== Want to talk about some games!? I've also written a TON of reviews that will go up there (You want to play GOOD games, right?!). =========== Bkstunt.com =========== So between those two sites, come on over and say 'Hi!' sometime. ========= Donations ========= First of all, let me say that my primary motivation for writing guides is, and always will be, for the gamer. However, as I've learned by writing just a few guides on new games, it can hit your pocket book! I wish they'd give me these games so I could crank out great guides, but they don't! Ah, maybe one day! Until then, if you've found this guide helpful please consider donating to help me offset my costs. You can donate to my paypal account below: ======= PAYPAL: ======= Paypal ID: Gregorio31 @ Gmail . Com Hey, it's WAY better than paying $20 for a guide, right? Even the smallest amount will be appreciated. ======= AMAZON: ======= ALTERNATELY, if you shop at Amazon.com (who doesn't?!) you can ALSO help me out by shopping through me! It doesn't cost you a SINGLE CENT either, which is kick-ass. All you do is visit my webpage's donation page below: ========================== Bkstunt.com/donations.html ========================== Once you are there, you can click on the AMAZON link at the top and shop as normal. 4% of what you buy will then be sent to me. Every one of those I read makes my day! ~ Bk Onto the table of contents, and don't forget to have fun! ============================================================================== Controls ===================================================================[SS-CON]=== Here you can find the controls for this game. I usually do fancy ASCII art, but not for GameBoy games... Directional Pad: Controls Pointer. A Button: Confirm Choice. B Button: Undo Choice. Turns off music (On Difficulty Screen) Start Button: Pauses Game. Press A + B while paused to end game. Select Button: Play Word. ============================================================================== How To Play/FAQ ===================================================================[SS-HTP]=== POINT VALUES ------------ Scrabble is all about scoring more points than your opponent. The Scrabble board is a 15 x 15 grid where you will play your tiles. Each tile has a point value attached to it, based on its rarity of use in the English language. The harder to use letters, like Z, are worth more than easy to use letters like A or E. See below for the point values for the alphabet: A - 1 N - 1 B - 3 O - 1 C - 3 P - 3 D - 2 Q - 10 E - 1 R - 1 F - 4 S - 1 G - 2 T - 1 H - 4 U - 1 I - 1 V - 4 J - 8 W - 4 K - 5 X - 8 L - 1 Y - 4 M - 3 Z - 10 As you can see, letters like Z, Q, X, J and K are going to net you the most points, so consider them a blessing when you find them. Speaking of finding letters, the game randomizes the letters it will give you (and the computer), which of course makes every single game unique (and means there is no possible way that anyone could write a "guide" to Scrabble. POINT MULTIPLIERS ----------------- However, the KEY to scoring well in Scrabble is to use the POINT BONUS TILES found on the scrabble board. The point bonuses you can receive are: 2 x LETTER SCORE: (Doubles the value of your letter) 3 x LETTER SCORE: (Triples the value of your letter) 2 x WORD SCORE: (Doubles the value of the word you put down) Note: The Beginning Star is also a double word score. 3 x WORD SCORE: (Triples the value of the word you put down) USE ALL LETTERS: (Gives you a 50 Point Bonus) Below is what the Scrabble board looks like: ____ ____ ____ ____ ____ ____ ____ ____ ____ ____ ____ ____ ____ ____ ____ | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | 3W | | | 2L | | | | 3W | | | | 2L | | | 3W | |____|____|____|____|____|____|____|____|____|____|____|____|____|____|____| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | 2W | | | | 3L | | | | 2L | | | | 2W | | |____|____|____|____|____|____|____|____|____|____|____|____|____|____|____| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | 2W | | | | 2L | | 2L | | | | 2W | | | |____|____|____|____|____|____|____|____|____|____|____|____|____|____|____| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | 2L | | | 2W | | | | 2L | | | | 2W | | | 2L | |____|____|____|____|____|____|____|____|____|____|____|____|____|____|____| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | 2W | | | | | | 2W | | | | | |____|____|____|____|____|____|____|____|____|____|____|____|____|____|____| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | 3L | | | | 3L | | | | 3L | | | | 3L | | |____|____|____|____|____|____|____|____|____|____|____|____|____|____|____| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | 2L | | | | 2L | | 2L | | | | 2L | | | |____|____|____|____|____|____|____|____|____|____|____|____|____|____|____| | | | | | | | | * | | | | | | | | | 3W | | | 2L | | | | 2W | | | | 2L | | | 3W | |____|____|____|____|____|____|____|____|____|____|____|____|____|____|____| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | 2L | | | | 2L | | 2L | | | | 2L | | | |____|____|____|____|____|____|____|____|____|____|____|____|____|____|____| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | 3L | | | | 3L | | | | 3L | | | | 3L | | |____|____|____|____|____|____|____|____|____|____|____|____|____|____|____| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | 2W | | | | | | 2W | | | | | |____|____|____|____|____|____|____|____|____|____|____|____|____|____|____| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | 2L | | | 2W | | | | 2L | | | | 2W | | | 2L | |____|____|____|____|____|____|____|____|____|____|____|____|____|____|____| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | 2W | | | | 2L | | 2L | | | | 2W | | | |____|____|____|____|____|____|____|____|____|____|____|____|____|____|____| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | 2W | | | | 3L | | | | 3L | | | | 2W | | |____|____|____|____|____|____|____|____|____|____|____|____|____|____|____| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | 3W | | | 2L | | | | 3W | | | | 2L | | | 3W | |____|____|____|____|____|____|____|____|____|____|____|____|____|____|____| On a normal Scrabble board it is easy to see what score multipliers are where, but on the Game Boy version... yeah, it's not so easy. There are lines and dashes on the board and if you don't know ahead of time it's hard to tell what is what. Here's a quick guide (or legend, really) of what means what: | 2 x LETTER SCORE: | | 3 x LETTER SCORE: . | ___ 2 x WORD SCORE: ___ NOTE: The Beginning Star is also a double word score. ___ 3 x WORD SCORE: ___ ___ To maximize your score, you of course want to aim to get as MANY Score Multipliers as you can, especially the 3 x Word Score. You want to use high value tiles on LETTER scores and Word Score words. It is just as important to make sure that your opponent doesn't get these tiles. Take them with lower-scoring words if you must, and especially if it will deny your foe that possible high-score. HOW TO START ------------ It is traditional for players to each draw a tile and see who comes up with the letter closest to "A" (Blank tiles are better than A, by the way). The first player will always use the STAR in the middle of the board to go first. Going first is also a distinct advantage as you not only have a blank slate, but the star acts as a DOUBLE WORD SCORE. HOW TO PLAY ----------- Once it is your turn, you will be able to either lay down a word OR dump letters and exchange them for other letters. PLAYING A WORD: Playing a word is fairly easy. I can't, of course, tell you how to play a word, but keeping a dictionary handy will always help. Plus there are SEVERAL websites dedicated to Scrabble words (especially words with Z, X, J, etc...). You can re-arrange letters on your screen by selecting them with A and then moving/swapping them around with your other tiles. To place a tile on the board, select a single tile twice with A and you can then move it around on the board. Once you have all tiles down, press SELECT to play the word. I SWEAR IT'S A WORD! -------------------- Once you play a word, the game will take a moment and decide whether its a REAL WORD or not. If it recognizes the word, your score will be added up and you'll have to select some new letters to replace the ones you just used. If the computer DOES NOT recognize your word, you can either... ACCEPT the computers ruling: Give up your turn. OVERRIDE the computers ruling: Force your word to be used and gain all points. And just in case you were wondering, yes you can make up just any group of letters, play it, and override the computer to score... DUMP LETTERS: If you don't like the letters you have, you can choose to DUMP your letters. This option costs you a turn, but lets you dump as many letters as you wish back into the pile of unused tiles and pick new ones. GAME MODES ---------- Supper Scrabble includes FOUR different game modes to play through: - 1 PLAYER: You versus the computer. You can decide on a level from 1 - 5 how tough you want the computer to be. - SOLITAIRE: You versus no one. This is a good practice mode. - 2 PLAYER: You versus another player. You will both share one Game Boy in this mode. Your tiles aren't shown until you press A, which give you plenty of time to give the Game Boy to another player. - LINK: Use a system link to play using two Game Boys. This is of course untested by me, but I can't imagine you NEED this with the 2 Player option available. ============================================================================== Credits ===================================================================[SS-CRE]=== Gamefaqs Gameboy Completion Project for providing the motivation. No way I would have done this without that! Keyblade999 for the Scrabble board. I'll also thank, hmmm... Strawberry Banana smoothies. Yum... ~Fin
