Differences in numbering are due to the original Adventure Island game never getting a port, and the English releases of the Game Boy games ignored this and labeled the Adventure Island II (NES) port as simply Adventure Island (think the Final Fantasy series with FF4j --> FF2, and FF6j --> FF3). As such, if you have played AI3 for the NES already, there is little point in playing through AI2, with the result of a few minor changes noted in the Gameboy Changes section. ~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~- How to Play -~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~ [HELP] Controls -------- Down - Crouch A - Jump, Swim (Classy Ally), Fly (Don-Don Ally) B - Attack with projectile or Ally attack Select - Exits from a level from the item selection screen Start - Starts a level, Pauses and Unpauses the game Basic Gameplay Summary ---------------------- Adventure Island II is a basic platforming game in the vein of Super Mario, split up into eight worlds with eight areas each. Each world has a 'secret' path involving two of the areas that skip straight to the sixth and final area of the regular path. AI2 lacks the same platforming depth that the Mario 2D series has, however - each level merely consists of crossing through the usually straightforward levels, killing off enemies with either a Boomerang or a Hammer, and collecting 'ally' animals that the main character, Higgins, can use to make his way through the levels. In the last area of each world, Higgins will face a boss battle, where action will switch up from the regular platforming. Each level has a 'timer' of sorts: instead of running out of time, Higgins has a vitality bar, with the bars slowly dwindling away. By collecting fruit and meat pieces, Higgins can restore his vitality to continue on through the level. Although ostensibly, there is a points system where points are gathered by grabbing fruit and killing enemies, there is little usage of it except for bragging rights. Allies ------ Throughout the levels, you can break eggs and find ally 'cards', which will give you an ally for the rest of the area that carries over to the next area. So long as an ally does not die in a level, you keep it, and any of the same ally you get will stack up, so you can have three or four or more Poleys or Red Taylors, etc. in reserve. In the menu selection screen in between levels, you can change between allies you have, or not have any altogether. Blue Taylor - Moves forward slightly faster than Higgins. Press the B button causes it to turn around and swing its tail out at its opponent. Red Taylor - Can step in lava. Moves forward slightly faster than Higgins. Its attack is to shoot a fireball out of its mouth straight forward. Poley - Rhino-like creature. Pressing the B Button causes it to curl up in a ball and 'ram' any nearby creature. Poley's attack is especially useful against some bosses because for about a second after it hits an opponent, it is immune to taking damage, allowing one to get out of the way after attacking. Classy - Sea-faring creature, and the only one that can swim in water. Pressing the A button in the water causes it to swim upwards. Classy cannot attack, however, so its B button attack will be whatever Higgins has equipped on his person at the moment. Don-Don - A pterodactyl-like creature, the Don-Don is the only thing that can fly, and by pressing A it will lift off into the air. Its B button attack is to send out a small rock at a very slight angle to the side it is facing. Items ----- Fruit - Gives a minor amount of points and restores some of Higgins vitality. Meat - Gives 1000 points, and restores Higgins vitality to full. Flower - Gives 1000 points, doubles the point value of all the fruit you subsequently collect. Hammer (Useable) - A weapon, equip on the item selection screen. Higgins can fire two hammers out at once, and they will sail out from him in a trajectory. Boomerang (Useable) - A weapon, equip on the item selection screen. Higgins can fire it left, right, or up (pressing the Up button). The Boomerang will return to Higgins after being thrown out. Diamond (Useable) - Equip on the item selection screen. When activated, it generates a shield of stars that will absorb one hit to Higgins or ally and render that attack nullified. Skateboard (Useable) - The skateboard only appears in certain eggs, and only after you already have a weapon equipped. When you use the Skateboard, Higgins will travel to the right automatically. Pressing the right button causes him to go faster, while pressing the left button slows him down. Higgins will never stop or go left while on the skateboard. It can also take a single hit so Higgins will be unharmed. Honeygirl Fairy - Hangs around Higgins for about twenty seconds. During this time, Higgins is absolutely invulnerable to everything except falling down a pit, and can run straight through enemies and torches, killing instantly. Eggplant - The eggplant hangs around with Higgins, depleting his vitality until he only has two bars left. This is the one item you do NOT want to collect. 1-Up - Gives Higgins an extra life. You may very rarely see a 3-Up, which gives him three extra lives. Hidden Eggs ----------- In most (but not all) levels, there will be a hidden egg in the level. To make it appear, you must jump right over the egg to make it appear - walking over it will not destroy it. If you throw the hammer or boomerang and it stops before it is supposed to, you know that a hidden egg is nearby. Most hidden eggs contain keys to go to Secret Areas - a few, however, will contain meat pieces (1000 points) or flowers (1000 points). Secret Areas ----------- Most of the time when you find a Hidden Egg in a level, it will give you a key that takes you to a secret area (in the case of a few 'In the Abyss' water levels, there will be a cave on the seabed bottom that you can enter in). There are four different types of secret areas. The first only occurs on levels where you go on the regular six-world path, or to the A-B path. In these worlds, a Hidden Egg will take you to a long hallway, sometimes with a protective diamond, and always with two allies, a lot of fruit and a meat piece near the end. SPLIT takes you to x-A, while EXIT brings you back out onto the current level. The second one to come up are 'bonus levels', of which there are two different types. In the first, there is a surfing mini-game, in which Higgins can jump onto a surfboard, which is guided through the water by a hand under the water. When jumping to the next 'hand', press and hold B before hitting the A button to make a long jump. In the second, Higgins (and ally) jump from spring to spring, while making sure not to fall down (you can land on a spring that has already been sprung, and jump up and back onto the spring to make it respring). In each type of bonus area, you can pick up fruit, weapons and allies, and reaching the end of the stage having gotten every item will give you an extra diamond. The third is a 'pick-the-egg', where you are given three eggs to choose from. The eggs can contain a fruit, a piece of meat, an ally, a 1-Up or a 3-Up. The fourth is the rarest, and there are only two occurences of it in the game, in Areas 2-3 and 5-4. These are 'shortcuts', which let you skip to the first area of the next world (3-1 and 6-1 respectively), also skipping the boss battle. ~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~- World One -~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~ [WRD1] Area 1-1: Coastal Clash ----------------------- Coastal Clash is fairly straightforward to begin with - head right while making the occasional jump to grab some fruit in the air, gain some points and restore the time you lose while going through the stage. Eventually, you should come to an egg on the ground: run into it to knock it up in the air, and let it fall back down on you. You should automatically get the hammer (if the egg hits the ground, it will leave behind the hammer, so go and pick it up if that occurs). Continue on once you have the hammer, until you come to a snail enemy on the ground. Once you have the hammer, you can throw it as a projectile at the snail enemy, knocking it out with one hit. Continue on, taking out another snail, two spiders, and then two more snails. After you take out a raven, you should come to an oddly shaped rock right after a palm tree. Jump into the air right before the rock, and this should cause an egg to appear. Land on the egg, and a cloud will come up from underneath, carrying the hero to a secret area within the Coastal Clash. Area 1-1: Secret Area --------------------- If you jump onto the surfboard that the hand in the water is holding up, the hand will begin to move forward. Stay steady on the surfboard by not pressing any buttons, and you should be able to grab all the fruit and the hammer that are in the air as the hand goes up and down in several arcs. After a short while, you should see another hand in the water. Press the B Button while moving forward to speed up and press the A button to perform a jump, and land on the next hand. The most important part of this second hand is that you can grab an infinitely more versatile Boomerang on the trip. Repeat this again once you get to a third hand. If you successfully grab all the items in this secret area, you will get a Perfect bonus once you land at the end. Either way, if you make it to the end or fall into the water, you will soon be returned back to the Coastal Clash area. Area 1-1: Coastal Clash (continued) ----------------------------------- If you successfully completed the secret area, you should have a Boomerang now. Jump over the rock (or crouch down and destroy it). If you do not wish to exchange your Boomerang for the Hammer, then jump over the egg here. If you did not do the secret area/did not successfully get a Boomerang, you can throw the Hammer at the egg to make it crack and give you a skateboard that you can use for the rest of the level. In any case, jump over another rock, then attack the raven to make it drop an egg. Pick up the egg to gain a Blue Taylor ally, who Higgins can ride on the back of. Continue right until you hit the cave entrance. Press as far right as you can, and then wait it out while Higgin's lifespan drops - once it hits zero, the level ends and as long as you are at the end here, you will be taken to the next level. Area 1-2: Bottomless Pit ------------------------ Press the B button in the Item Select screen to get rid of the Red Taylor if you picked it up from the previous level (it goes into 'storage', if you will, so you can use it in a later level again). Press B again to ditch the Boomerang if you have one, and select a Hammer instead, as you can pick up another Boomerang in this level (and as you lose your current weapon every time you die, it never hurts to have extras). MAKE SURE to take a weapon with you! Start off the level by hitting the skull enemy in front of you, then grabbing the fruit above the former foe's location. Head right and pick off another skull enemy, then grab two more fruit. Drop down the ledge while grabbing more fruit, and you should come to an egg. Either break it with your weapon or open it by running into it - if you currently have a boomerang, you will get a skateboard. If you have a hammer, you get a boomerang, and if you have nothing you get a hammer. Anyways, proceed onwards again, and jump up onto the ledge, taking out another skull enemy along with a moth-type enemy. Break open the egg, and you can get a Red Taylor ally that shoots out straight long-range projectiles. If you get hit by an enemy while riding the Red Taylor, however, you will lose it as an ally. Continue right, jumping over the water (you can fall into the water with no damage done), and eliminate the moth enemy flying over the next platform. Jump on top of the rising platform. Drop down on this platform (this is the FIRST rising and falling platform) into the water. Go right slightly and fire with the Red Taylor to make a hole in the rock wall. Press up in front of the wall to enter another area. Inside, continue right and grab a diamond, then jump onto the platform with the diamond card to get a 'Classy' ally. Continue on right, jumping around and grabbing fruit, and grab yourself another Red Taylor. Now proceed on until you hit the end - SKIP takes you to Level 1-A, while EXIT brings you back out into the main section of 1-2. After 1-A there is Level 1-B, which brings you to Level 1-6, while finishing 1-2 means you must do 1-3, 1-4, and 1-5 before you can get to 1-6 (note that 1-A and 1-4 are the same level). If you choose to take the EXIT, you will be dropped back outside to the right of where you entered the hidden hall. At the end of this platform, jump up on the end to land on an egg with some food in it, then continue on right again. Take out a kamikaze spider dropping in from above and a rolling enemy, followed by two more of the skull enemies and another moth, before you hit the end of the cave. Area 1-3: Dark Forest --------------------- Ditch your ally and weapon beforehand. Once you come into the Dark Forest, go right and grab a Hammer form an egg. Kill off a couple of spiders, then break open the next egg to get a Honeygirl Fairy, which grants the main character Higgins temporary invincibility, allowing you to plow through enemies without even needing to use a weapon. Take out a snail, jump onto the spring to try to grab another fruit, and kill off another snail. Once you hit the flower before the trees, be very wary. Walk right, until you get past the first tree, and quickly jump up to avoid getting hit by a fox-like enemy. Once you safely avoid it, take out a couple of spiders, and break open the egg to take control of a Poley. With the Poley, press the B button to roll up into a ball, and ram into the nearby boulder. Walk forward slightly, then jump up into the air to make an egg appear to the left where the boulder just was. Destroy the egg and pick up the key to be able to go up to a secret area. Area 1-3: Secret Area --------------------- This time around, instead of surfing like in Area 1-1, you are high up in the sky and you have to jump to the right using several springs, while making sure to land on the springs and not falling down. There are a few good things you can pick up here - a Boomerang, a Hammer, a Blue Taylor, and another Poley. If you are nervous, you can jump off a spring, and land back down on that same spring (be careful of sliding off though), and then can jump up again to reactivate that spring. This way you can take a few seconds breather if needed. Once more, if you get all the fruits and items, you will also get a Perfect Bonus of a diamond. Area 1-3: Dark Forest (Continued) --------------------------------- Take out the lone snail then head into the cave entrance until Higgins' vitality runs out and the level ends. Area 1-4/A: In the Abyss ------------------------ Note that if you take the A-B route instead of the 3-4-5 route, In the Abyss will be 1-A. Get rid of both your ally and your weapon before coming in. This is a water level, so pressing and holding the A button will cause Higgins/his ally to swim upwards. Start the level off by going forward, and open the egg up to get a Classy. While Higgins can swim through the level on his own, Classy is far more convenient and also quicker to maneuver, so do not lose it! Continue on, and grab a hammer floating in the level, before going out into the main section of the Abyss after taking out a seaweed enemy. Float up to the top of the screen and go down to the bottom of the screen as you make your way right, while grabbing as much fruit as you can (your vitality can drop quite quick in this game) and pick off the variety of snails, fish, jellyfish and turtle enemies that you run into. Once you hit the other side of the first body of water, you will run into a couple of guard sentries seahorses - be careful, as they require two hits to kill, not one. After you get through two of these enemies and through the narrow strip of water, you should come out into the next segment of the Abyss area. This part is a lot shorter than the first half. Just take out a few more enemies while moving right, and eventually you should come to the exit. Wait there until your vitality runs out to end the level. Area 1-5: Coastal Clash ----------------------- Get rid of your ally and weapon before you come in. Once you start, walk to the right and grab a Boomerang from the egg. Jump over the first cloud platform and back onto the next island, then wait for the jellyfish enemy to jump out from the water in front of you. Take it out with the Boomerang, then proceed onwards again. Open another egg up to get a Blue Taylor all, then hop onto the cloud. Use the Blue Taylor's tail attack to kill off another jellyfish foe. AVOID the egg you see - if you run into it, you will have an Eggplant attach onto Higgins, which lowers his vitality until he is left with only a couple of bars. Instead, jump over it and go down the hill slope, and take the snail out at the bottom. Go over the water, taking out another jellyfish, grab some more fruit and kill off another snail and you will eventually make it to the end of the stage. Area 1-B: Misty Haze -------------------- Equip a Hammer before coming in. Take out the snail when moving forward, then throw the hammer constantly. You should see a spot where it will not land, indicating a Hidden Egg. Jump up and around until the egg appears, and open it to get a Clock item. The Clock will stop Higgins from losing any vitality for about 20 seconds. In any case, start walking forward, and take out a slew of the snail and raven-type enemies. Eventually, once you cross the first few gaps in the clouds, you will also come to some spider enemies, and a raven foe that actually moves. Shortly after that, you should come to the exit to this rather short stage. Area 1-6: The Desolation ------------------------ You should bring in a Red Taylor and Boomerang into this stage. Move right from the start up the slopes and take out the scorpion and birds. Eventually you should come to some quicksand - eliminate the scorpion on it and quickly cross over the sand, jumping to get back up when necessary. Continue on right again, making sure to quickly eliminate any bird or rabbit enemies that rush at Higgins. After making it past the third quicksand pit, open the egg to take control of a Poley, and quickly destroy the rock rolling at you. Continue downhill, taking out two more raven enemies, then go to the end of the stage and wait for Higgins' vitality to run out. Boss Battle: Blue Beetle ------------------------ Head right from the start and then down the hill to trigger a boss battle. The Blue Beetle will start aboveground, go up the hill to the left, come back down to the right, and then submerge itself in the sand. While it is above the sand, roll the Poley into a ball and you can damage the Blue Beetle (in fact, you can even overlap with the Blue Beetle and not be damaged for a few seconds, though I do not recommend this). The ideal strategy is to rush at the Blue Beetle, turn into a ball and hammer the Beetle until Poley gets to the other side of the boss. Once that is done, turn around and rush at the Beetle again. When the Blue Beetle goes into the sand, run up to the far left on the hill. The Blue Beetle will fire twice at you: do a run and jump over both shots, then wait for the Blue Beetle to emerge from the sand once more (you can also jump and roll into a ball in the air and land on the Beetle to damage him). If you lose Poley, it will be a bit trickier, but as long as you stick to left side once Blue Bettle goes into the sand it should be relatively tame. ~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~- World Two -~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~ [WRD2] Area 2-1: Bottomless Pit ------------------------ Bring in a Red Taylor and a Hammer. Start the area off going right, killing off a couple of buglike enemies and a couple of moths. Once you come to the egg, break it open and destroy whatever is inside. Drop down underneath the spiked platform and go right, and use the Red Taylor's projectile attack to make a hole in the rock wall. Enter. Inside, pick a random egg before you are dropped back outside. Back in the main area, hop onto the moving platform. Once you drop off on the opposite end, kill off a couple of skull enemies, then make your way across a platform that will drop down. Continue on, breaking another egg that has yet another Red Taylor in it. Go over two more platforms, taking another moth out. Watch out for a spider that drops down from above; other than that, you are clear for the level once you hit the end. Area 2-2: Coastal Clash ----------------------- Break open the egg at the start for a Hammer, then continue on, destroying a snail. Stop once you get to the palm trees, and jump around in the space between the first and second palm tree to get a hidden egg containing a Clock. When heading up the slope, watch out for the rolling rock, then take out a kabuto beetle on top of the hill (if you have the Clock of course, time is stopped so it will remain in hibernation). Continue down the slope and kill off a cobra. Jump over the fire, and take out another kabuto beetle. Jump over another fire and kill another beetle. Once you come to a spring, stop, and jump around in the area right before the spring to make a hidden egg appear. Destroy it, and pick up the key to be carried off to the secret area. Grab a Diamond in the secret area, then head right, grabbing a Blue Taylor and a Poley. Once you hit the end of the secret area, go to SKIP to go onto 2-A: Oak Forest, or go to EXIT to head back out to 2-2. If you take EXIT, jump onto the spring and go over the fire. Kill the raven, and break open the egg it drops to get another Poley, then continue on into the cave at the end to finish up the level. Area 2-3: Ice Cave ------------------ Start off by going right and taking out a penguin before it can slide across the floor at you. Be careful when walking and landing as Higgins will slide a bit before he stops completely (and it would be rather bad to slide down into a pit or into an enemy). Make sure to jump over the fire torch and into the area behind it, as the ice is merely a foreground and not solid. Once you get out from the ice, grab some fruit and take out another penguin before it can slide into Higgins. Continue down the ice floor. Right before another foreground with blocks of ice, jump around while dodging or attacking a Walrus, and a Hidden egg will appear. If you break open the egg and grab the key, it will take you to an area where you can choose YES to skip to Area 3-1. If you do this, however, the boss in Area 2-6 will disappear. If you decline to take a shortcut, then go right past the ice. Jump across a couple of platforms, where you should encounter another penguin - instead of trying to attack it, jump over it and let it fall off. Continue on a bit more, destroy an egg for a Blue Taylor, take out a couple of penguins, and you should hit the Ice Cave exit fairly quickly. Area 2-4: Misty Haze -------------------- Break open the egg at the beginning for either a Hammer or a skateboard. Make your way right across the clouds killing off a couple of ravens until you come to another egg, which contains a Honeygirl Fairy (which grants you temporary invulnerability). With the Honeygirl, go right and plow through a spider, raven and snail. Continue your straightforward journey rightwards through the clouds, taking out the occasional enemy such as a spider or raven, while making sure not to fall down any of the gaps, until you make it out of the area. Area 2-5: Cascading Torrent --------------------------- Walk right and pick off the crab enemy on the high platform with a well -placed Hammer/Boomerang blow, then make a precarious high jump to land on the platform safely. Make some more jumps, taking out another crab, before landing on a longer stretch of solid ground. The next segment of the level involves logs falling down the waterfall. These logs fall down to the bottom of the screen, so you need to jump from log to log and make sure you stay up: this requires a high jump from the first log to the second one, so be prepared. Once you get to the egg after the two logs, open it for a Boomerang. Continue along, and take out a frog, raven and snail, as well as another crab before jumping up onto another high platform again. This next jump is tricky again - you need to wait before the log is near the bottom before jumping onto it, or else Higgins will not be able to cover the distance between platform and log. Once you successfully make the jump, quickly move onto the next platform, and break open the egg to finally get a Don-Don for the first time. This pterodactyl-like enemy can fly by pressing the A button, while it can drop pellets from above by pressing the B button. Quickly fly into the air and go right over the waterfall. Grab a piece of meat that should appear in the air, and land down and walk over to the cave entrance to finish the level. Area 2-A: Oak Forest -------------------- Break the nearby rock right away for a 1-Up, then kill the cobra right in front of where the rock was. Cautiously trek forward, taking out a Kabuto Beetle, before eliminating another cobra. Move forward, and eliminate a few spiders (unlike in 1-3: Dark Forest, there will not be a fox to sneak up behind you). Shortly after fighting off a rolling rock, you should come to a tree with the ground floor at its lowest elevation. Jump around here to make an egg appear with a key, and grab the key to go to a secret area. Pick an egg (contents are randomised). Outside again, go right. Ignore the left egg, and instead break open the right one to get a Honeygirl Fairy. With her protecting you for a short while, quickly rush to the right, making sure to get a Classy ally from the egg, until you hit the end of the area. Area 2-B: In the Abyss ---------------------- Bring in both Classy and a weapon. At the start, hop into the water, and go right and eliminate the fish, jellyfish, etc. Once you make it through the first area and take out the seahorse guard, however, things get a little trickier as you must go around a minefield: maneuver Classy carefully through the water to avoid running into a mine, while making sure to take out any enemies before they run into Classy/Higgins. Ignore trying to kill some of the algae-growth creatures, and do not swim up too high (where spikes on the ceiling will puncture Higgins' ride or Higgins himself): vitality goes down rather quick in the water levels, so you should not waste time. Once you make it out into open water again, grab some fruit as quickly as possible to give yourself some more time, and then the piece of meat on the lower part of the water to fully recover the vitality bar. Take out a few more seahorses before landing in the cave at the end. Area 2-6: Lost Woods -------------------- Proceed right at the start, and take out the frog enemy. Continue on and jump onto the platform with the next frog foe (the marsh underneath will kill instantly). Jump right a few platforms - kill the raven, and the frog lying on the branch underneath (if you have a Hammer). The egg the raven leaves behind will have a Red Taylor ally inside. Continue right to kill a frog, then destroy a rock with a 1-Up inside. Jump down after a bit onto a spring and go back up onto a higher platform. Slay a pair of spiders, then continue onwards, killing another spider, a frog and another tree frog, as well as jumping onto another spring. Eventually, when you hit the foliage at the end, a boss battle shall begin. Boss Battle: Rabid Flower ------------------------- This battle is pretty much pathetic. At the start of the battle, the left flower will open up and spew four petals that fall right underneath it (and not to the side). Jump onto the right platform, and jump up and hit the left with as many projectile attacks as you can from either the Red Taylor or from your Hammer/Boomerang. Once the flower closes, jump to the left platform and turn to face the right flower, and hit once it opens up. You can attack a flower four times before it closes, so try to get at least three hits in. After a short while, Rabid Flower will just die off - yes, it really is that simple. ~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~- World Three -~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~ [WRD3] Area 3-1: Oak Forest -------------------- Preferably take in a Poley into this stage, as you will get hit from behind by a couple of the fox-enemies. Start the state going up the hill and take out the rolling rock, then a snail, some spiders, and a couple of frogs once you get into the forest. Once you leave the forest part, be wary when you get to the flower in the ground: go down the hill, and the fox foe will quickly come down from behind. Use a Poley's rolling attack, turn around and hit it, dodge it, whatever, just make sure not to get attacked. Take out a frog and a couple of boulders going up again, then be careful again as you go down the hill: this time, you will have not one but two foxes attack you from behind as you take out the frogs. After both pairs of enemies are done with, continue on to the end of the stage. Area 3-2: Ice Cave ------------------ Bring in an ally, preferably the Poley or the Red Taylor. When heading right up the slope, take out a walrus quickly, then deal with two penguins while crossing the top of the hill. Go down the slope, until you come to an egg in the ice blocks - break it open to get a Honeygirl Fairy. Continue on again, bullrushing through all the enemies you come across. Once you go down the slope again, make sure to grab the piece of meat in the air to restore your vitality fully, and take out the two penguins. Cross the platforms and pick off a walrus before finishing the level off. Area 3-3: Perilous Plunge ------------------------- Bring in a boomerang into this area as opposed to a hammer. Start off by picking off the pig enemy that walks straight up to you on its rear legs, then jump up a high platform, taking care to pick off the crab. Continue on a few platforms, and eliminate another crab. After the second crab, jump around on the platform after the fruit in mid-air to make an egg appear. Crack it open to get a Poley ally. Go onto the next platform, and take out a pig. Continue along again to another long platform, then onto the ground where there is a large waterfall in the background behind it. Jump around to make a Hidden Egg appear, and break it open for a key to appear. Grab the key to make the waterfall split. Press the Up button to head inside. In the secret area, head right, grabbing all the fruits but especially the meat, and get a Classy ally. Taking SKIP brings you to 3-A, while going to EXIT puts you back out onto the 3-3 area. If you take EXIT and go back out into Perilous Plunge, jump onto the higher platform to get a Hammer. Continue on right, and you will have to take out another pig and either eliminate or jump over another snail to get to the exit to 3-3. Area 3-4: In the Abyss ---------------------- Jump into the water with a Classy and a Hammer equipped, then swim along until you get out into the main body of water. Unlike previous water levels, Area 3-4 is fairly simple - just swim along the bottom of the sea, picking off enemies, and grabbing fruit to restore your vitality. There are not any Hidden Eggs or items to pick up here, so just trek your way across the water level until you hit the entrance at the end, while making sure to constantly take out any enemies that might come in contact with you (you could also swim up and kill more enemies and grab more fruit if you are the type of person who is trying for the highest possible score with this game). Area 3-5: The Desolation ------------------------ Bring in a Poley with you. During the start of the stage, go right and kill some of the land ravens and destroy a couple of rocks. After a few quicksands, stop in the area between two quicksand traps where you will get attacked by a rabbit. After taking the rabbit out, jump around until an egg appears. Break it open for a key to take you to a secret area. In here, the middle egg gives you a meat piece while the right egg gives you a Don-Don. After leaving the secret area, continue to head right across some more sandpits. The first of two eggs will give you a flower worth 1000 points, while the second will give you an extra Poley ally. After, continue to go down and right across the wasteland, taking out rabbits and birds alike, until you hit the end of the stage. Area 3-A: Misty Haze -------------------- If you have a Don-Don at all from any previous levels, you may wish to bring it along as it pretty much allows you to breeze right through this level. In any case, whether you have one or not, you will still need to go up throughout the level: 3-A differs from most levels in that it is not straightforward right, but instead you must loop back right and left jumping across clouds to eventually get higher and higher. About one third of the way up, you should see a white egg only lightly visible against the background of the clouds. Break it open to get a Don-Don, which can help you travel through the rest of the stage. More importantly, make sure that you collect fruit WHENEVER you see it - fruit is fairly uncommon in this stage, and keeping your vitality up is, well, vital. Once you hit the top of the level, go right over the solid mass of clouds into the puncture hole for the level exit. Area 3-B: Coastal Clash ----------------------- Start the area off with a Boomerang. Take out a crab enemy at the start and continue on right, ignoring the rock above you. Once you go up the hill, be prepared to take out a pig enemy - after, you can also swing your Boomerang upwards at the crab on the top ledge. Take out a snail on the ground, then go over the first cloud. Take out an octopus that jumps from the water, then jump onto the top platform to avoid a torch. Jump onto the top of the two clouds, then drop down to the lower cloud, and finally off onto the platform. Take out another octopus before crossing two more platforms. Once you get to the area where the ground slopes up in a hill, stop at the bottom of the hill and jump around to trigger the appearance of a Hidden Egg. Destroy it and grab the key to go to the secret bonus area. This is another wave-surfing bonus stage much like the one in the very first level, 1-1. If you complete a perfect stage, grabbing all the items and fruits, you will also get a diamond. Remember, pressing and holding B before going forward gives you an accelerated surf. Once you go back out into the main area after the surfing, take out the raven to make it drop an egg with a Classy in it. Kill off or jump over the crab to get to the level's end. Area 3-6: Bottomless Pit ------------------------ If you have a Don-Don, you could easily fly up through this stage and complete it quickly. However, I do not recommend doing so, as Don-Don will not be useful in the boss battle. Instead, take Red Taylor for projectiles and a Boomerang into the level. Go up right at the beginning. Take out a skull enemy to your right, and grab the Boomerang it guarded. Next, take the left path and continue your trek upwards. Grab the fruit at the end of that path, then continue on right, killing off a floating skull and a bug, then go left again. Eventually, you should come to four or five consecutive platforms going up to the right with a moth at the end. If you are good, on about the second or third platform jump up to the left where there is a skull floating on a high-up platform, kill it and save a few seconds. In any case, head left from either the moth or the skull until you come to a waterfall, and go to the bottom ledge of the waterfall to get a Red Taylor from an egg. Move around to get back onto a higher ledge in the waterfall area, then jump up across all the platforms 'till you make it to the top of the waterfall. Jump off to your right and go into the exit. Boss Battle: Flaming Lizard --------------------------- Unfortunately, much like the previous boss battle (if you faced it at all), the Flaming Lizard is rather disappointing in how easy it is. At the beginning of the battle, the Flaming Lizard will appear on the left of two platforms. It will remain there, stationary, for a few moments before it splits into five 'segments', each of which comes off of it in a pentagon shape. When it does this, you need to move away from the Flaming Lizard so that you have more room to slip in between two of the segments and not get hit. If you stand far away enough (as in, on the other platform), however, you are far away enough to be quite invulnerable. When it rematerialises on the other platform, back away from it and continue firing, and that is that. With the Red Taylor you could ideally finish it off in its third appearance. If you do not have a Red Taylor, things will take a little bit longer using either the Hammer or the Boomerang, but as long as you can avoid getting hit when it splits apart, the battle is easy. The water is also safe to go in. ~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~- World Four -~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~ [WRD4] Area 4-1: Coastal Clash ----------------------- Jump onto the first platform, and jump off fast enough before the cloud sinks. Take out a Kabuto Bettle on the ground. Before crossing over the next cloud, make sure to eliminate the octopus that will jump up from below. Once you get to the spring, jump over to the next platform, and take out either a Kabuto Beetle on the top or a cobra on the bottom. Kill another octopus before crossing the next platform, and then cross some more clouds that will sink once you step on them. Once you make it back on solid ground again, continue walking right, killing a couple of frogs along the way, until you finish the area. Area 4-2: Oak Forest -------------------- Walk right killing of a spider and kabuto beetle, skipping over or destroying a rock, and then slaying a cobra. Stop right before the spot where the cobra was, and jump around to make a Hidden Egg appear. Grab the key that appears to go to a secret area where you can surf. Pull off a Perfect Bonus for a protective diamond if you feel up to it. Once you return back to the main level, continue walking right. Break the rock open if you want to, DO NOT OPEN THE EGG (this is an Eggplant, which as you might know already, drains Higgins vitality at a drastic rate until he has only a couple of bars left). Move uphill after that, destroying a few rocks on the way. Coming downhill, take out a straggler Kabuto Beetle, and then some spiders as you move through the trees. Jump over the torch and take out another beetle. In the last stretch of the level, take out a raven, and open the egg it leaves behind for a Blue Taylor while going downhill, and take out one last beetle before hitting the end of the level. Area 4-3: The Desolation ------------------------ Break a rock at the start, then continue on right and take out a scorpion. Head up the hill and dodge or destroy a rolling rock. At the top, watch out for one of the desert rabbits that is hopping around wildly - take it out if you wish to avoid the menace of dodging it. Continue on right until you come to some quicksand, and open the egg for a Hammer. Make sure to eliminate the roadrunner bird before it manages to pile-drive Higgins or ally (rapid-fire your hammers instead of throwing it one at a time, as the bird can be rather frustrating). Go past another quicksand, but stop once you get to the cacti plant right after this second quicksand field, and hop around to make a hidden egg appear. Crack it open for a key to the Split secret area. Inside, grab the items, which include a Poley and Don-Don ally. The SKIP exit takes you to Area 4-A, while EXIT takes you back out to finish off Area 4-3. If you take the EXIT, then with the Don-Don, fly over the first bit of the quicksand pit, and land down on top of the egg in the quicksand to gain a Poley ally. Head right and take out a pair of bouncing rabbits. Go down the hill, destroying a rolling rock and two more rabbits before hitting the end of the level. Area 4-4: Pyramid Crypt ----------------------- Bring an ally in (besides Classy), as you will need one to perform a high jump. This is one level where bringing in a diamond to give yourself protective invulnerability for one hit is also a good idea. Take out the bug-creature at the start, then move right and destroy a floating skull and a moth. Do NOT go down the steps: instead, from the first step going down from the top, go right and jump at the wall above you; there is an invisible hole that you can slip through. Once you successfully make it into the top hallway, go right until you make it out into the foreground again. There are two spikes that will drop from the ceiling and rise up again: it is quite possible you will lose your ally here, but so long as you can make it through with Higgins intact that is no problem (or if you bring a diamond in, that will give you one free hit with no damage done). Past the spikes, take out a cobra and jump onto the coffin for a Poley ally and a piece of meat. Destroy a moth before continue out the wall and back into the main area of the crypt. Kill a couple of spiders and some bugs and moths until you reach the end of the crypt. Area 4-5: In the Abyss ---------------------- Bring in a Classy for this level, of course. If you have done one water level, you have done them all, basically. Hop into the water at the start, and stick to the bottom of the sea as you swim right through the level. Once more, do not try to rush like a mad man, and be sure to pick off the assortment of squid, fish, turtles, seahorses, jellyfish and the ilk that are swimming around lest they run into you and either take out your ally or Higgins himself. Be careful, as there are a couple of mines laying around in the water, including at least one moving one. Make your way to the second half of the level, and you will find a sunken ship as part of the background. The exit hole is in the hull of the ship near the back. Area 4-A: Oak Forest -------------------- Take out a snail and a rock first thing. When climing up the ledge- steps, dodge or destroy a rolling boulder, then kill a frog on top. Make your way through the forest until you come to an egg. Slay the spider hanging above it and break the egg open for a Blue Taylor ally. Continue down the hill finishing off another spider, and destroy the stationary rock for a 1-Up. Continue on, watching out for another rolling stone, then finish some more enemies until you get out the forest. Once you get past the first flower outside of the forest, tread carefully: walk forward a bit more and you will get ambushed by a fox. Move forward some more past another flower to get the same result, and then repeat for a third flower and fox. Eliminate any more enemies in your way and walk to the forest's edge to finish the level. Area 4-B: Misty Haze -------------------- Eliminate a rapid series of enemies, mostly spiders, until you reach the end of the first cloud, and jump onto the first cloud. Jump around the edge of this cloud to make an egg appear. Open it up for a key to a secret area. This one is an area where you have to jump across on springs. If you are nervous about a jump, you can land on the spring you just bounced off of, and stand still for a few seconds (if you jump again, you will get a long bounce off the spring again). Along the way, you can get both a Blue Taylor and a Poley ally. Back out in the main area, continue to move across a large series of clouds. Take out every raven you see: the second one should drop an egg containing a Classy. Continue to move onwards, until you get to two moving platforms in a row (two, noot one): instead of going onto the platforms, drop down to a partially-visible cloud below for better visibility. Proceed right again across the platforms to the next stable cloud, then quickly run across the next series of cloud ledges before they sink down. Move right across one more cloud to get to the level exit. Area 4-6: Shipwreck Voyage -------------------------- Bring in a Don-Don to this area. Bring a Hammer as well. Start off by lifting into the sky, and start going right, sending pellets to the ground constantly to knock enemies out (and increase your score), while picking up the occasional fruit you see. Continue heading right to kill two skull enemies (Don-Don's attack goes out slightly at a trajectory so you should be able to nail the skulls before you run into them). Once you see an egg below you, drop down to the ground and break the egg open to get a Classy. Jump into the water, and sink down. Start swimming to the right, and bring your Classy ally up to the top of the screen, where all the fruit shall be found. Again, be careful while moving around, and fire rapidly at any enemies that you find - it can be a lot more annoying (and slower) to swim around just as Higgins as opposed to having Classy to swim for you, not to mention you will probably want Classy for the battle later on. Just make sure to stay underneath the crates that make up the ceiling and do not bother to go above water again. Once you hit the end of the level, sink down and go into the doorway to the boss battle. Boss Battle: Aqua Beast ----------------------- Swim all the way right until the water dragon appears. The Aqua Beast moves in a rather easy-to-decipher pattern. It will start at the top right at the beginning of the battle, but subsequently will always appear in a bottom corner. The Beast will go down and up the side of the screen it is currently on until it is lined up with Higgins, before it swims in a straight line through the water to the opposite side. It then fades out, reappears on the bottom corner, and repeats. For this battle, the key is obviously not to get hit: if you get run over by the Aqua Beast's charge, even if you have Classy Higgins will still be taken out. Instead, stay away from the Aqua Beast as far as possible at all times, and try to keep it going up and down as long and possible. Except for the first round, stick in the upper corner opposite the Aqua Beast. When it pokes its head out, start firing away with hammers at the Aqua Beast. Once it begins to rise to the top, quickly sink down to the bottom. Wait for it to sink as well, then rise up and hit it from above. Repeat until it finally makes its decision to charge to your side, then quickly get out of the way. That said, that is basically it for the whole battle. Just hammer away at the Aqua Beat until it is down. ~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~- World Five -~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~ [WRD5] Area 5-1: Bottomless Pit ------------------------ Bring in a Don-Don. Head right and take out a skull enemy. While going across the skies, be wary, as you will get the occasional spurt of water that goes high into the sky that can kill Higgins. If you stay low, you will also see an egg with a Hammer in it. After a short bit, once you get to a rolling rock and another skull enemy. Walk around the edge of the ledge the skull was on to make a Hidden egg appear. Inside the secret area, you will be able to get both a Classy and a Red Taylor. SKIP takes you to 5-A, while EXIT takes you back out into 5-1. If you choose EXIT, take out a few moths. There are no more spurts of water in this level and you can wade through the water with the Red Taylor perfectly fine (except for around the one rising platform), so continue on right, jumping over the torch, until you hit the exit. Area 5-2: Perilous Plunge ------------------------- Stop the snail at the beginning of the stage, then jump up onto the first platform. Throw your weapon at the pig on the next platform before continuing on, and take out a crab, and then a snail. Proceed to march again on the higher platforms until you come to an egg. Grab whatever is inside it. Make sure to stick to the top platforms as you continue along - the next visible egg contains an Eggplant, so do NOT take it. Instead, continue to wipe out the foes you spot in your way, mainly pigs and crabs, until you make it onto solid ground again at the end and finish the level. Area 5-3: Coastal Clash ----------------------- Start off by destroying or jumping over a rock and then a beetle, then skipping over the torch. Head uphill, and kill a frog and a snake. When going downhill, be wary of the kabuto beetle that shall crawl uphill (the two rocks have nothing in them). Jump over another torch and go back uphill once more, and eliminate both a kabuto beetle and a frog. Stop before going past the next torch: instead, throw a projectile at the kabuto beetle behind it, THEN continue. Finish off another frog and a raven who will drop a Poley egg before heading to the exit. Area 5-4: Oak Forest -------------------- Start off in a section of trees by taking out a spider and a cobra. Once you get out of the forest, eliminate a Kabuto beetle and continue going right. Eliminate another cobra going uphill, and jump over the torch at the end. Take out the kabuto beetle, then drop into the first crevice in the ground in the short forest here. Jump around for the Hidden Egg to appear, and go off to the secret area after grabbing the key. If you select YES to skip the stage, you will exit World 5 and go straight to Area 6-1. If you select NO, you will be put back out onto the main stage. Exit the forest after taking out some of the arachnid foes, then go uphill, destroying a couple of rolling stones. Go back downhill again, breaking a few stationary rocks, a pair of Kabuto beetles and a cobra, and you should eventually reach the end to the level. Area 5-5: Bottomless Pit ------------------------ Run right for a while - you will not encounter anything until after you have made two jumps up, when a spider will drop down from the ceiling. Take that one out along with a skull enemy, and another ceiling spider. Jump over the platform before it sinks. On this next pillar, jump around on the right end after killing a moth for an egg that contains a piece of meat. Break open the rock on the long ledge, and jump around for a hidden egg to appear. Break it open and collect the key to go off to the secret area. The results are randomised, so choose one (or reload save states if using an emulator until you get something satisfactory). After being returned to 5-5, make a long jump onto the small platform to your right. Exterminate a moth and jump onto the next platform. Tread carefully as water spurts return in this level, resulting in the occasional spit of water from below that can kill. Once the one in front of the platform goes down, make your way over via a moving platform. You should see a ghost hovering above the ground patrolling left and right in an endless cycle. Do not even bother to fight it. Instead, wait for the water spit to go back to the ground before making a long jump to the next platform. Watch out for a spider dropping down from above, then continue on to the end of the level. 5-A: In the Abyss ----------------- Given that this is a water level, you should obviously bring in a Classy along with either a Boomerang or Hammer. You may also wish to bring in a diamond for invulnerability to one hit, as it can be very useful here. Once you dive into the water, stick to the seafloor bed, and swim right while hitting the jellyfish and turtles and the ilk with Higgin's weapons. After a short while of racking up points from the waterlife, you should come to a tight area with two mines moving around, along with spiked ceilings. I recommend you slip right underneath the first mine as soon as it moves above Higgins' position. You can just swim over the second mine - however, it is guarding a piece of meat that will completely restore your vitality. Getting hit by one mine will take out your diamond shield, while being hit by both will end up taking Classy as well. In any case, once you navigate your way through the two mines, eliminate two seahorses that are standing guard. Go back to the seabed again and swim right, taking out some more foes, until you hit the opening at the end. 5-B: Blizzard Peak ------------------ As this is the first time in an outdoor frozen environment, you should expect to see some new enemies. Take a Blue Taylor or Poley out with you. Go right and take out the white bunny standing around on the snow. Continue up to the top ledge and eliminate another rabbit. When going right, go slowly, as a snowball will come down from above and hover above the ground and chase you. Destroy it and quickly rush down the hill, taking a penguin out on your way down. Finish another rabbit off before jumping up. On top of the icy pillar, kill the bird coming to you before crossing the gaps. Bounce around to expose a Hidden Egg with a flower inside it for 1000 points. Cross some more gaps until you make it back to solid ground again. Going up, jump around where the tree is for a Hidden Egg with a key to appear and take you to the secret area. This is another 'jump on springs' area with a couple of really tricky jumps, where you can collect two Boomerangs, a Hammer, Red Taylor, Poley and Don-Don allies. Once you make it out of the secret area, head right. Make sure to dodge a snowball from above, and go down the hill, killing a penguin. Break open the egg for a Blue Taylor, then eliminate a pair of spiders and break a rock with a 1-Up inside as you go east, hitting the end of the level finally. 5-6: Fossil Lair ---------------- Bring a Don-Don into this level, and fly up and soar above the ground. Do not go up too high, however; stay somewhat close to the ground so you can spot any fruit that are in the air, and recover your vitality. If you lose your ride, then cross the rest of the area on foot - be wary when crossing a gap in the bone floor, however, as the last pieces of bones will often sink as soon as you press weight on. Eventually, you should hit the end, so enter the boss's lair. Boss Battle: Skeleton --------------------- The boss will be a skeletal head on the body to the left. While it is on the stone body, it is invulnerable. Once it breaks off, it can be attacked. When breaking off, it will go right and off the screen, then reappear on the lower right side, where it will shoot three rays out slowly straight out to the left and at 45 degree angles. It will then go left and off the screen, reappear on the upper left, and reattach onto its body. After it does this, it will spit out a single large vortex of energy at Higgins. With a Don-Don, this fight goes by fairly simple. At the start of the fight, rise right to the roof, and have the Don-Don toss pellets at the Skeleton non-stop while he crosses right, and left. Once the Skeleton gets to the upper- left part of the screen, immediately lower the Don-Don. Once the Skeleton shoots out the single vortex of energy, quickly fly right back up to dodge the attack. Without an ally, the fight can take a little bit longer, but still is not that difficult thanks to the Skeleton boss's repetitive pattern of attack. ~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~- World Six -~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~ [WRD6] Area 6-1: Bone Crossing ----------------------- Much like the previous level, Bone Crossing consists of one long skeletal floor, with holes in the floor occasionally. If you step on some of the bones around the holes, once again, they may sink underneath Higgins' weight. My recommendation is to use a Don-Don again, and simply fly over the floor, while occasionally swooping in to get a piece of fruit to restore your vitality. In the case you get knocked off your bird, then simply continue running right throughout the stage - Bone Crossing has little variety in enemies, consisting entirely of the rolling boulders and ravens, so whenever you are walking, tread carefully to make sure you do not run into a boulder. There are also several torches around, so make sure to jump over them when they come up. Other than that, Bone Crossing is really short, so do not be surprised if you complete it quickly. Area 6-2: Ice Cave ------------------ Fight a walrus at the start, then go right and break open an egg for a Blue Taylor ally. Head out from behind the ice blocks to encounter a penguin, and break another egg for a Boomerang (or a flower worth 1000 points if you have a Boomerang already). Jump over a set of ice blocks - a few of them will crack once you step foot on them, then break if you stay on for another second, so quickly move across. Once you land back on the icy floor, take out another walrus. Right at the left edge where the ice blocks in the foreground begin, jump around for a Hidden Egg to appear. Break it open to go to the secret split area. Here, you can get a Diamond, a Blue Taylor and a Poley. SKIP will take you to 6-A, while EXIT will bring you back out onto the stage. Jump around the end of the lower half of the floor for a Hidden Egg with a piece of meat inside to appear. Jump across a few more ice blocks, then across a couple of narrow pillars before taking out a penguin and finally hitting the end of the Ice Caves. Area 6-3: Blizzard Peak ----------------------- Bring a Red Taylor into this area. Go right at the beginning and get either a Boomerang or a 1000 points flower from the Egg. Stop moving once you make it about halfway up the hill, and destroy the rock that comes down. Continue up and kill a penguin, and watch out for snowballs coming from above. Eliminate a bunny coming down and a penguin going up. Once you get to the top, drop down into the gap (yes, drop down), and press right against the right wall to go into a semi-hidden tunnel. Head right while firing with the Red Taylor's attack at the brick wall until you uncover a hidden door. Press Up to enter. In here, you can choose to skip this area and go all the way to 7-1, or leave. If you leave, continue right where you get dropped off on the top side of the level, and take out a bunny before finishing up this area. Area 6-4: Oak Forest -------------------- Go up the hill and take out a rolling rock and a frog. Go down the slope, and wait for the kabuto beetle to move before jumping over the torch and dodging the beetle altogether. Entering the forest, take out a slew of enemies. Once you hit the last tree, jump around for this level's Hidden Egg to appear and have it transport you off to a hidden area. In this case, you will get a surfing bonus area. Unlike the usual bonus areas, however, there are no ally symbols present. Continue on after the bonus area, making sure to watch out for a rolling rock going uphill. Once you come to a spring, ignore it, and jump over both it and the egg (which contains an Eggplant). Take out another two rolling rocks going uphill. When walking down, be very careful, as the fox will run at you and make the frog skip towards you, so either take out the fox or jump backwards. After that, head towards the level exit. Area 6-5: Blizzard Peak ----------------------- Bring in a Red Taylor or a Poley. At the start, kill the rabbit, then go up the hill, watching out for a rolling rock coming down the hill. Go down and up again while taking out a quatret of white rabbits before eliminating another rock at the top of the hill. Jump over another rock on the downwind and destroy the boulder at the bottom for a 1-Up. While heading up, eliminate another boulder, a penguin and a bird while dodging the snowball from above. Make the final trek downwards jumping over some more rocks until you hit the exit. Area 6-A: Bottomless Pit ------------------------ Head right, and destroy the rock above without getting hit by the ghost. Jump up, go right and kill a spider dropping from the ceiling and a rolling stone. Continue on, killing a pair of moths, a bug and another ceiling spider. When you come to some platforms going across the water, if you are not riding an ally, be wary when crossing the latter two: they will drop as soon as you step on them. Take out a pair of frogs. Jump over some more water, then stop before the next mid-air platform and jump around for a hidden egg. The secret area here is a bonus area with springs to jump around that has two boomerangs, a hammer, a Red Taylor, a Poley and a Don-Don. After, continue on, making sure to not run into a spurt of water on the right side of the mid-air platform, then kill a moth. Break the rock for a 1-Up and an egg for a hammer, then press onwards, taking out a slew of moths, frogs and skull enemies, topped off by a rolling rock, until you hit the cave end. Area 6-B: Perilous Plunge ------------------------- Take out a crab going right, then jump over some platforms and take out another crab. After you eliminate a frog, you will come to a spider going up and down; take it out, then go on the LOWER platform. Jump around the middle for a secret egg, to go to a bonus area with three eggs. The left side has a Classy, while the right egg has a very useful 3-Up (3 1-Ups). After, start climbing up to the right - take notice of an egg on a platform above you, which has a hammer. Take out a few crabs, a spider, and a raven which will drop an egg with a Red Taylor in it. Continue along the top side for another egg with a Classy in it, then drop down to solid ground after a short walk again to get to the exit. Area 6-6: Ice Cave ------------------ It is best if you take a Hammer into this level. In quick succession, take out both a penguin and a walrus, then grab a piece of meat. Continue on, until you come to an egg: jump over it and approach it from the right side so it does not fall into the abyss, and open it for a Don-Don. With the Don-Don, the rest of the level is fairly easy sailing: just approach the roof and glide to the right, until you hit the end. Drop down to go into the hole in the wall. Boss Battle: Giant Crab ----------------------- Your Don-Don ally will be fairly useless in this battle: at the same time, touching the boss would be an instant kill, so instead, fly above to the RIGHT platform and turn around to face LEFT. When the crab jumps up, it will force Higgins out to the left side. In any case, you will see that there are two platforms above an ice floor. Once the Crab comes in from the lower right, it will jump up onto the right platform. It shall swing its arm around for two full rotations, before swinging right at Higgins' position. Time the arm so that as soon as it finishes its second rotation, you should have Higgins jump up onto the left platform so the crab's attack goes right below Higgins. Once it does its attack, the Giant Crab will jump into the middle of the screen and onto the lower left part of the floor, move to the right part of the floor, stand there for about a second, and then jump. When it first jumps down, have Higgins crouch on the left platform to prevent himself from getting hit, then fire away with your Hammer while the Giant Crab is on the floor (as well as while it is jumping over onto the floor). Once the Crab jumps onto the upper right platform, the pattern repeats, and Higgins should go back onto the floor in the left area, and jump once the hammer arm comes. After a while of grinding out damage to the crab, its arm will turn white. When this occurs, it will do two attacks instead of one: after it completes its first attack after two rotations and withdraws its arm, jump up to the top of the screen to make it fire up there, then crouch again. That said, the Giant Crab does not deviate from this pattern at all: however, it takes a lot of damage, making this battle one of grinding out damage. ~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~- World Seven -~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~ [WRD7] Area 7-1: In the Abyss ---------------------- Bring a Classy and a Hammer into this stage. Drop down into the water at the beginning and start moving right, pummelling the squid, fish and algae growth. As is typical in the water stages, make sure to grab fruit whenever they come up so as to not run out of vitality. After a short while, you will also some to some mines coupled with seahorses. Stick to the seabed through the duration of the level, and you should notice a couple of rocks with holes in them. At the second one of these rocks, take out the seahorse hovering above the rock, drop down to the rock, and press Up in front of it to go to the secret area. Inside, grab a protection diamond and some fruit and meat. SKIP will take you to Area 7-A, while EXIT will bring you back out onto Area 7-1. If you take EXIT, continue on right after being dropped out, killing a few algae, a jellyfish and a seahorse until you hit the level exit. Area 7-2: Oak Forest -------------------- Take a spider and a raven out going east until you start going downhill. Jump over a torch and take out a rolling boulder and a frog while going uphill. Once you go downhill, you should notice that there are three flowers in a row: take out two foxes, then walk right slowly, destroying a rock before continuing and killing or dodging another vulpine. Continue onwards, taking some birds, frogs and spiders out, until you finally get out of the forest. Out of the canopies, proceed to eliminate or duck two more foxes and another frog until you hit the level end. Area 7-3: Fire Gorge -------------------- The first part of the level will be fairly straightforward - just walk left, destroying a large number of rolling rocks and frogs, with the occasional cobra, and avoiding any volcanic activity. Jump over a torch after a short while, jump over some lava flow, and take out some more frogs, cobras and stones, up until you finally hit the ending of the very short level. Area 7-4: Lost Woods -------------------- Take out a snail and a raven heading right, topped off by a gecko. After the frog, wait for the raven to fly above a platform before killing it, making it drop an egg with a Red Taylor ally inside. Drop into the water, and head right untill you get back onto solid ground again. Right at the edge, jump around for a Hidden Egg to appear. The secret area is a bonus area jumping around on springs with a Boomerang, Hammer, Blue Taylor and Poley. Once you get back outside, continue heading right across the forest, taking out spiders, geckos, frogs, and the like. One egg that appears on a top platform will contain a flower. Beat up on enemies until you finally hit the hole in the leaf foliage at the end. Area 7-5: Shaft of Darkness --------------------------- Bring a Classy into this level. Take out a bug, moth and spider before jumping into the water. Drop below the spikes and you should come up on a piece of meat - grab it, and you will be covered as far as vitality goes for the rest of the level. From there, start going right, killing off the usual assortment of water-based foes. After some time, you will come across moving water mines. Drop underneath the patrol path of the horizontally moving first one, then slip the vertical mine after that. Kill off a couple of squid enemies, then hover up and jump out of the water and go into the exit. 7-A: Coastal Clash ------------------ Equip a Boomerang, especially if you do not have an ally with you. Start off jumping over a Cobra's line of fire and finishing it off, then eliminating an octopus on the right side of the first cloud platform. Quickly skip over another cloud platform to come to an egg with a Blue Taylor. Continue onwards, eliminating a Kabuto beetle, then either destroy the evil cloud foe or run past underneath it. Hop across a series of three platforms. Jump on the stone pillar at the end for a Hidden Egg that will take you to a surfing bonus area with two Boomerangs and two Hammers. Once you return to the main level, take out an octopi before going past another trio of clouds. While running the last stretch of the level before the exit, take out or jump over the fox and then continue on into the cave. 7-B: Perilous Plunge -------------------- Quickly finish off a pig foe while coming in, then jump over the gap onto one of the elevations of ledges and finish off another pig in your way. Make your way to the top ledge and eliminate a snail, then hop down to the right along some narrow ledges, taking out some snails, crabs and an odd bird enemy. Once you make it onto another solid stretch of ground with three ledges over top of each other, drop to the bottom and break the rock for a 1-Up, and ignore the egg. Jump up to the top, then over to the next platform. Ignore this egg as well (it contains an eggplant), or else run into it to bounce it over into the valley chasm. Continue on jumping across the platform, eliminating a few more bird- foes. Take out another pig at the end before exiting the level. Area 7-6: Thunder Clash ----------------------- Definitely bring in an ally, preferably a Red Taylor or Poley, and also bring in a Diamond for extra protection. Right away, take out a snail and two ravens, and then two spiders before you even finish walking across the first cloud. Jump across a cloud platform that will sink as soon as you land on it, jump to the next grey cloud and finish off another snail and a raven. Repeat the process, taking down another two ravens. Make your way through a slew of ravens and spiders again until you hit the end of the level and go into the boss area. Boss Battle: Giant Moth ----------------------- Head down multiple clouds until you get to the white ones before the battle will begin. The Giant Moth will start on the right side of the screen, and will move to wherever Higgins and ally are. Once it finishes moving, it will stay there for a few seconds, and then chase after Higgins once again. To this end, there are two strategies that you can use against the Giant Moth. The first requires the use of the Poley and its unique property of being invulnerable while it is curled up in a ball and for about a second afterward. With the Poley, let the Giant Moth come to Higgins and Poley, then roll up and ram through the Moth, then quickly jump down to a platform on the opposite side. If you have a Red Taylor, or are using a Boomerang or Hammer, things will be a little different. Stand on the top of the two platforms on the side opposite the Moth. Once the Moth moves in your direction, quickly fall down to the lower platform, then jump over to the opposite side and blast the Moth from long-range with a projectile attack. Near the end of the battle, those of you who are keener-eyed may notice that the Giant Moth's outline begins to gain a faded colour. THis is not indicative of any special attack that the Moth will unleash -instead, this is just a sign of its impending defeat as it is near death. Make sure you do not fall off the platforms, as falling down will result in death. ~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~- World Eight -~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~ [WRD8] Area 8-1: Fire Gorge -------------------- Start the stage by taking out some cobras, frogs and rolling rocks. Be careful when crossing the lava flow if you only have Higgins or a Poley, and be sure to stick to the rocks and not the lava. Once you make it over the first bit, take out a cobra and open the egg for a Don-Don. With the Don-Don, quickly rise into the air, and then start flying right. Near the end of the level, you may be ambushed by a volcano that will spit out four pieces of volcanic lava - if the Don-Don gets hit by this, you do not really need to worry too much as Higgins will just fall off and land on the ground (unless you fall onto an enemy). From there, just deal with a frog and continue on into the level exit. Area 8-2: Oak Forest -------------------- Quickly run through the first half of the level, which consists entirely of forest infested with the usual spawn of spiders, cobras and kabuto beetles, along with the occasional rolling rock. After some time, you should finally reach an egg which will contain a skateboard, hammer, boomerang or 1000 points flower depending on what you currently have in your possession. Continue to hammer your way through a mass of Kabuto Beetles and jump over some stationary rocks until you hit the end of the level. You can also bring a Don-Don in and skip through the whole entire level in practice. Area 8-3: Shaft of Darkness --------------------------- Slay a skull and bug enemy, then finish off a moth before jumping onto the first available platform. Watch for a spider dropping down from above on the second platform, then finish off another bug before getting back onto solid ground again. Take out a skull enemy, a rock, and another skull enemy. Jump around where the second skull foe was to make a Hidden Egg appear and transport you off to the secret area of the level. In the secret level, grab a protective diamond, a Poley and a Don-Don. As always, SKIP will take you to 8-A, while EXIT will bring you back out onto the main section of the level. If you choose to EXIT, fly up into the sky with the Don-Don, and continue to glide right across the air until you hit the end of the level, where you should drop down to complete the area. Area 8-4: Coastal Clash ----------------------- Take a raven, rolling stone and frog out in quick succession while going up the hill, then use the cloud to jump across to the next island, killing another raven and frog. Cross over to the next island and hop around on the left side for the Hidden Egg to appear. Crack the egg for the key to the bonus area, which is a short surfing area with a hammer and boomerang. Once you return to the main level, continue on rightwards, breaking an egg with a Blue Taylor ally in it, and getting back onto a solid expanse of land again. Proceed to wander on some more, taking out a few frogs and a few foxes until you hit the area end. Area 8-5: In the Abyss ---------------------- As always, bring a Classy into the water level. Once you jump into the water, kill off the jellyfish and algae, then continue on. Rise up in the water to go past the squids, until you come to the floating mine. Sink underneath the mine, and drop to the near bottom of the screen (where the pit is). Float over to the right side while staying in the pit area, then float back up and continue your trek rightwards. Take out a seahorse guarding the narrow passageway to the next part of the level, as well as the algae growth. Take out the school of fish coming at you, then kill off some jellyfish. Stay above the floating mine and instead focus on taking out some fish above the mine, and continue right to the end of the level. Area 8-A: Bottomless Pit ------------------------ Equip a protective diamond before coming in. Duck the two ghosts wandering around and destroy a rock before jumping up onto a high ledge. Destroy the rock, getting a different thing depending on your current circumstances (1000 points, Hammer, Boomerang, or skateboard). Take out a couple of bugs on the ground floor, then hop on the lava. Hang back to avoid a spurt of water, then kill a moth. Jump around the small island here for a hidden egg to take you off to an area with three eggs to choose from. Once you get back from the secret area, continue on, taking out a host of spiders, moths, and bugs. After jumping over a torch, finish off a few more idle enemies and then head into the cave exit. Area 8-B: Coastal Clash ----------------------- This is a perfect level to use the Don-Don. If you would rather use another ally, take a Blue Taylor, and wait for the cloud to go to its lowest point before jumping onto it, and then over to the next part of the level. Take out a frog, then go over three more clouds, of which only the last one will sink. Eliminate a raven then go uphill, making sure to pick off a fox that comes up from behind. Continue on, taking out another fox and a few more critters. Once you cross two more clouds, go onto the lower ground, and jump around underneath the palm tree for a Hidden Egg to appear that gives you 1000 points. Proceed to walk right again, taking out another fox and a snail. Finish the level off with one last fox, a raven and a pair of frogs before finally hitting the end of the level. Area 8-6: Double Eruption ------------------------- Be aware that this is the final level, so not withstanding the usual ally (I recommend the Red Taylor), you should also equip one of the diamonds to give yourself immunity for one hit. At the start, go right, knocking off a frog, rolling rock and cobra in quick succession, then jump over the laval flow via the stone in the middle to the opposite side (though if you are using a Red Taylor you can step inside the lava without any problem), killing off another snake and rolling rock. Jump over the torch, then take out some more rocks and another snake and frog before going over another pit of lava. On the third platform in the crossover, jump on the platform to make a Hidden Egg with a piece of meat appear, perfect for replenishing your vitality. Once you finally make it over after killing some frogs, head up the steep incline, watching out for another rolling rock before getting to the top. Make a downhill trek finishing off or jumping over one last frog before you make it into the boss's lair. Boss Battle: Alien Spaceship ---------------------------- Your ally will be fairly useless in this battle, so ditch it to one of the Spaceship's attacks as soon as possible. If you are playing this game on a ROM, you may encounter a battle where the spaceship will sometimes disappear off-screen: if this occurs, run to either end of the battlefield, and run away once the Spaceship reappears. In any case, the Spaceship will hover above two platforms, and go back and forth spitting down straight bolts of fire from the spaceship. While it is going in one direction or the other, have Higgins attack the Spaceship - this can be accomplished with the hammer by jumping onto one of the platforms and Hammering away, or pressing up when firing the Boomerang to send it up at the Spaceship. Once the Spaceship approaches, quickly run to the end of that side of the room, where it will stop for about a second before firing again. When it does its second of hesitation, quickly run out to the opposite side, and set yourself in position to hit the Spaceship again. Overall, the routine to the battle is fairly easy to follow, but it will take a bit of grinding to finish it off. Just be aware that after this battle, you have another boss battle to fight. Boss Battle: Alien ------------------ This is another grinding battle with an overall simple pattern. At the beginning of the battle, the alien will appear on the upper right platform. It will then slide down diagonally to the center bottom of the screen before going up to the left platform. While it is in the process of moving down, Higgins must jump to dodge this. After, the alien will disappear, and then reappear on the central platform (so move to the left or right side). It will then shoot two projectiles, one after the other, in Higgin's direction, before it fades out and reappears on one of the two side platforms, repeating the first step again. There are a couple of notes to be made in fighting the Alien. While it is 'fading' in and out, it cannot be injured, but at the same time, as long as the alien is not fully corporeal Higgins cannot be injured if he is standing right overlapped with the alien. With that said, there are several opportunities for hitting the Alien. As soon as it appears fully, start hammering away with the Hammer or Boomerang, and when it glides to the other side, continue hitting it. When it starts firing from the center, hit it again. Eventually, it should go down, finishing the game with it. ~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~- Codes -~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~ [CODE] The ten codes below are fairly general codes. The following are the list of observable differences. *Most obvious is the difference in graphics, as the GameBoy version does not display color (though it may display shades of blue if playing on a GBC or GBA) *The world maps are also slightly different, as the different 'areas' in the GameBoy version are actually marked off with circle icons, as opposed to the NES version *The alien ship does not appear on the overworld map. *The secret areas in a level that has 'split paths' after are longer in the GameBoy version, whereas in the NES version they were a single-screen room. *Volcano levels do not spit out lava in the GameBoy version, except for from one single volcano in the two levels in a straight-down manner. *Nearly every boss except for the second and sixth are different. The alien battle is completely different than in the NES version. A part of this is due to screen size differences. ~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~- Donations/Amazon -~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~ [DONT] I don't really care too much about donations, but if you are feeling generous, feel free to send one via PayPal to gammabetaalphafaqs AT gmail DOT com Alternatively, if you ever order any items from Amazon.com, go to the link below.
