All set? Then, "batter up!" o:::::::::::::::::::::::::o -------------------------: ii. Rules/Terms :------------------------- o:::::::::::::::::::::::::o When I was younger, I didn't understand some of the rules. Mainly, the pop fly rule. Here are a few rules that you will need to know. Don't worry. They are easy to learn. ----- ------ ---- - Three Strike Rule - ----- ------ ---- The Three Strike Rule is simple. If the ball is pitched into the "Strike Zone" between the batting boxes, it's a strike. If you swing and miss, it is a strike. Get three, and you get an out. ---- ---- ---- - Four Ball Rule - ---- ---- ---- The Four Ball Rule is also simple. If the ball is pitched outside the "Strike Zone", it is a Ball. Get four, and you get a walk. (You get to go to first base for free!) ----- --- ---- - Three Out Rule - ----- --- ---- If your team gets thrown out, or strikes out three times (together) then the portion of the inning is over. It'd be the other teams turn to bat. --- --- ---- - Pop Fly Rule - --- --- ---- If the ball is hit in the air, and a fielder catches it, all base runner must go back to their bases. Example: If I have a runner on first, and the ball is hit high, I cannot advance him to second until the ball is caught, and he has touched first base. Then he can "Tag Up" by trying to get back to the base. (Not a good plan trying to tag up from First to Second. Third to Home may work.) ---- ---- -- ------ ----- - Foul Ball on Strike Two?? - ---- ---- -- ------ ----- Foul Balls are normally strikes, but on strike two, they don't. The ball is void. If the batter BUNTS a foul ball, it will count as a strike out. Trying to bunt on Strike Two isn't smart anyway. ------ ---- ------- - Ground Rule Double? ------ ---- ------- When a ball is hit high and deep, and it bounces off the ground, and over the wall, it's a Ground Rule Double. The batter automatically gets to go to second base. There are also some terms you may find confusing. Here they are. -- - HR - -- HR is short for Home Run. A Home Run is when the ball is hit over the wall, in fair territory. Everyone on base scores. ---- ---- - Foul Ball - ---- ---- When the ball is hit behind first base or third base. Counts as a strike. --- - ERA - --- Earned Runs Average per 9 Innings. The lower, the better. ------- ------- - Batting Average - ------- ------- The higher, the better. This is the batter's ability to get on base. (Hits divided by At-Bats) -- ---- - At Bats - -- ---- If a batter gets out via strikeout, groundout, popout, or gets a hit, it is counted as an At Bat. If they are hit by a pitch, or walked, it is NOT an At Bat. o:::::::::::::::::::::::::o -------------------------: iii. Game Modes :------------------------- o:::::::::::::::::::::::::o There are five modes in World Class Baseball, and here they are! -- ---- - VS Mode - -- ---- This allows to human players to faceoff against each other! You require the TurboTap accessory to use this mode. ---- ---- - Open Mode - ---- ---- This allows the human player to play the computer. ------- ---- - Pennant Mode - ------- ---- This allows the human player to choose a team and compete against every other team in a play-off style. When you beat every team, you get to face the TURBO TIGERS. These guys are amazing. Defeat them, and you win the pennant. In this mode, you cannot change your starting lineup. ----- ---- - Watch Mode - ----- ---- You get to sit back and watch two computer players play each other! ---- ---- - Edit Mode - ---- ---- Allows you to change the starting lineups. o::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::o ---------: iv. Batting/Running/Pitching/Fielding Strategies :-------- o::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::o ------- ---------- - Batting Strategies - ------- ---------- The key to batting in this game, is not to fall for the computer's special curve ball. It will look like a strike, but then curves hardcore to the opposite side. It's rather annoying. When you're at the plate, take the first pitch to see how they are going to pitch to you. Keep your eye on the ball. When you step up to the plate, you are rather mobile. You can use the D-Pad to move your batter around the batter's box. Button I allows you to swing. (The height is determined automatically.) To bunt, press start. Controlling the power of your swing is a necessity in this game. If your batter is right-handed, holding "right" on the D-Pad will produce a soft hit. It'll be vice-versa with a left-hander. Press "left" will produce a line drive. (If the pitch is inside.) When bunting, press right or left to try and get a good angle of the pitch. If you wish to select a pinch hitter from your bench, press the select button. This will call time. Press Button I, and then your players with their respective statstics will be shown. If you change your mind, and decide not to use a pinch hitter, press Button II. My favourite batting strategy, would have to be the "Fall Back, Spring Ahead" theory. I call it this because it was the first thing that popped into my head. Basically, you move your batter as far back in the batting box as possible. When the pitcher tosses the ball, hold the direction key to the opposite side that your batter bats on ... (Left-hander, hold right) and swing if the pitch is good. This works about 70% of the time. Also, don't fall for the computer's sweet curveball. ---- ------- ---------- - Base Running Strategies - ---- ------- ---------- I'll start with stealing bases, and touching up. To steal a base, use Button II, and press the direction key the way you wish to steal. To steal second, press up. Third is left. Home is down. Touching up is when the ball is popped up into the air, and is caught. You have to go back to your base. To go back, use Button I. Once the player reaches the base, he cannot go back. Use this to your advantage. If you have a runner on first and third, use this trick. Try to steal home, and have them throw it home. Have the other runner steal second. Either way, you've done great. You'll either advance the runner to second, or score a freak run. It's a great strategy. My favourite base running strategy would be the "100% Hit-and-Run" theory. Basically, I have my runner steal on every pitch. If it's a ball, or I swing and miss, I retreat the runner immediately. The advantage to this theory is that if there is a base-hit, you have a bigger advantage to having the runner hit 3rd as opposed to just 2nd. Make positive that you know that he can make it. The last thing you want is a bad out. Also, if the ball is popped up, retreat immediately. You could be caught in a bad double play. This strategy works 90% of the time. -------- ---------- - Pitching Strategies - -------- ---------- If you want to win in this game, you have to know how to pitch. Your main objective is to make sure that you throw the timing of the batter off. There are five different types of pitches that each pitcher can throw. - Fast Ball - Slow Ball - Inside Curve - Outside Curve - Normal Pitch To throw a fast ball, hold DOWN on the D-Pad when you have thrown the ball. To throw a slow ball, hold UP on the D-Pad when you have thrown the ball. To throw an inside curve ball, hold left on the D-Pad when you have thrown the ball, if the batter is Right-handed. Vice-versa for a Left-hander. To throw an outside curve ball, hold right on the D-Pad when you have thrown the ball, if the batter is Left-handed. Vice-versa for a Right-hander. To throw a normal pitch, hold nothing on the D-Pad when you have thrown the ball. The best part of pitching, is that you can mix up directions. You can pitch a fast ball, and then move it fast to the right by pressing right AFTER the pitch has been declared as a fast ball. You can do this with every pitch. By pressing SELECT to call time, and pressing Button I, you can substitute pitchers. If you need a "Save", choose the one with the most S's. On the mound, you can move your pitcher left or right. -------- ---------- - Fielding Strategies - -------- ---------- The art of fielding, is an art that is difficult to learn. Well, maybe I lied. It's rather easy. The five things to fielding are as follows. - Catch - Diving Catch - Throwing the Ball - Touching Base - Pick-Off "Catch" is simple. When the ball is hit, move the fielders, trying to figure out where the ball is going to land. If your fielder holds the glove up, you've found the spot! Congratulations! Your infielders will cover their respective bases at this time as well. "Diving Catch" is an advanced technique that should not be overused. Only use this if you need to. If your fielder misses, runs will score for sure. "Throwing the Ball" is easy in this game. After catching the ball, press the direction you want to throw, and Button I. You can only throw to the cut-off man, or one of the four bases. "Touching Base" is what you use when you want to pursue a runner. Press Button II and the base you want the fielder to run to. "Pick Off" is when a base runner is leading off, to the point that you know you can throw them out. Press Button II, and you'll go to the fielding screen. Throw to the appropriate base. Be aware ... they may try and steal. You can also change the fielders position by pressing the Run Button and the direction key at the same time. Only one position per ball is possible. There are four different positions. - Deep Defense (Press Up) - Shift from Third Base (Press Left) - Shift from First Base (Press Right) - Forward Defense (Press Down) o::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::o -------------------: v. Team Rosters/Statistics :-------------------- o::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::o The North Division forces their pitchers to bat in the 9th spot. By not having a Designated Hitter, they get an extra Farm Fielder. The South Division loses the extra Farm Fielder, but their pitchers don't have to bat. ________________ North Division - ________________ ----- ------ - Tokyo Ninjas - ----- ------ Team Batting Average: .281 Home Run Total: 159 Pitching E.R.A Average: 3.06 Batting Order - MIURA (.242, Right-handed) - TAKAS (.293, Right handed) - FUKA (.301, Left-handed) - ULA (.308, Right-handed) - SHIMA (.323, Left-handed) - IMAI (.334, Left-handed) - MURAK (.322, Right-handed) - NAKNO (.274, Right-handed) - KONDO (STARTING PITCHER, 2.17 ERA, Right Handed) Relief Pitchers - TSUKI (0.00 ERA, Right-handed) - KAWA (3.40 ERA, Right-handed) - HIRO (1.90 ERA, Right-handed) - JUNKO (3.35 ERA, Left-handed) Bench Fielders - YOSHI (.288, Left-handed) - SO (.248, Left-handed) - TSUDO (.212, Switch) - SUSKI (.163, Right-handed) Farm Fielders - OISHI (.305, Switch) - AKI (.278, Right-handed) - MIWA (.242, Right-handed) Farm Pitchers - SAITO (3.03 ERA, Right-handed) - YUJI (3.67 ERA, Right-handed) - OSATO (2.61 ERA, Right-handed) - NAKAM (1.76 ERA, Right-handed) - ANDO (4.01 ERA, Right-handed) --- ---- ------ - New York Apples - --- ---- ------ Team Batting Average: .265 Home Run Total: 168 Pitching E.R.A Average: 3.64 Batting Order - JOYCE (.255, Right-handed) - SNIDE (.234, Left-handed) - BURCH (.318, Left-handed) - BRICK (.332, Right-handed) - CRAIG (.272, Right-handed) - STEEL (.292, Right-handed) - KOCH (.254, Left-handed) - SMALL (.287, Right-handed) - EGAN (STARTING PITCHER, 2.74 ERA, Right Handed) Relief Pitchers - COLIN (4.33 ERA, Left-handed) - SMITY (4.45 ERA, Left-handed) - MATTO (4.50 ERA, Right-handed) - SPIKE (1.56 ERA, Right-handed) Bench Fielders - MULE (.316, Right-handed) - EVAN (.288, Right-handed) - CAZ (.206, Right-handed) - YOHAN (.208, Right-handed) Farm Fielders - KOMP (.213, Right-handed) - CAREY (.236, Left-handed) - RAY (.187, Right-handed) Farm Pitchers - DOBBS (3.86 ERA, Right-handed) - SAMES (2.40 ERA, Left-handed) - BYNER (2.76 ERA, Right-handed) - LATZ (3.02 ERA, Right-handed) - ONEIL (4.08 ERA, Left-handed) ---- ----- - L.A.
