What's New -= -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Version 1.0 (7/22/10): The first version. ***************************************************************************** -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= -= 2. Introduction -= -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Super Sidekicks 3 is the third game in this soccer series for the Neo Geo system. It is much more similar to the second game than the first, but with a couple of new additions. There are now 64 teams (up from 48 in the second game), and you now have a choice of tournaments to enter. These tournaments are based on various real-world regional/world contests, so it gives a bit more flexibility in what teams you will get to face and where. Other than that, there are no changes since Super Sidekicks 2, so if you liked that one, you will enjoy this game as well! ***************************************************************************** -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= -= 3. Controls -= -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Start: Start game Select: Pause/resume game Joystick: Move cursor on menu screens, move players during game A: Make selection on menu screens, shoot/low pass (offense), slide (defense) B: Cancel selection on menu screens, high pass (offense), tackle (defense) C: Short pass (offense), switch players (defense) ***************************************************************************** -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= -= 4. Overview -= -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= ========== Game Modes ========== After the title screen, there are a number of game modes you can select: Game Start: Enter the main game mode where you can play in a variety of tournaments to win the championship. Exhibition Game: Play a single game against a second human player. Option: Change various in-game settings (time, difficulty, language, and how to return the ball to play from out of bounds). Game Demo: Run a demonstration of the gameplay in action. Team Data: View even more detailed analysis of the teams, including each specific player. Exit: Quit the game. After you select a game mode, you will be shown the game's controls before being able to select a team. In this game, there are eight world regions with 64 teams total. Of course, each team has its own set of statistics as shown in a graph of sorts. Move the cursor to the region you want and press A, then select the team below. Once you pick your team, you can enter your initials. Following this, you will be able to select a "power up" for your team from a self-explanatory list. The next screen, new to this game, is the tournament menu. You can select from six different tournaments to play in, including the main World Tournament which follows the usual World Cup format. The other five are regional, so you will only face teams within that particular region, regardless of the team you have selected. The tournaments are molded from real-world tournaments as follows: World Tournament: FIFA World Cup Europe Tournament: UEFA European Football Championship South America Tournament: Copa América Americas Tournament: CONCACAF Gold Cup Africa Tournament: African Cup of Nations Asia Tournament: AFC Asian Cup Each tournament has you facing three qualifying matches before going forward to the semi-finals, then to the final championship match. In the World Tournament, you go to a Regional Qualifying Round Final, where you play a random team to qualify for the tournament. If you win, the empty tournament bracket is shown and your team is put into a group of four. You must win games against every team and then you will be on the final eight for the bracket. You can then play through the quarter-finals, semi-finals, and then the final match for the world championship. After that, the game ends. ================ General Gameplay ================ The main mode of play are the tournaments you can enter into. There are 64 teams total in Super Sidekicks 3, and they are split into eight groups of eight. Depending on the tournament you enter into, you will only face certain teams in the games. The World Tournament is similar in nature to the World Cup, in that you play through a qualifying match to start, followed by playing teams within your grouping before continuing up the bracket. The games are split into two periods with 2 minutes (2:00) apiece (you can change these settings when you start the game). There is not an actual timer, but a slice that fills as the game progresses. When it turns red, you have very little time remaining. You have the option to switch your players manually during the game when you are on defense. If you are on offense, the other players move automatically. During the actual game, your team's available actions will depend on if you are on the offense (possessing the ball currently) or defense (other team has the ball). Those controls are as follows: Offense: A - Shoot/low pass (good for short passes low to the ground; shoot when prompt appears above your head) B - High pass (good for longer, higher passes) C - Short pass (good for passing to a player right next to you) Defense: A - Slide (this is how you steal the ball from an opponent) B - Tackle (knock over an opposing player to steal the ball) C - Switch players to manually control Generally, the game will give you control of the player closest to the ball. Fortunately, the game does a good job of automatically controlling your team members (as in, they are pretty smart for the most part). Each team also has a player designated as a Captain, who is the best player on that team. If the ball goes out of bounds during play, by bouncing off the goal posts or being kicked out accidentally, possession of the ball goes to the opposing team. Basically, if your team was the last to touch the ball as it went out of bounds, the other team will get the ball. To return the ball to play, it will be kicked/thrown in, either from the sides or by the goal keeper, depending on where and how the ball went out of bounds. If you are on the defense and the opposition is approaching your goal, you unfortunately do NOT have much manual control of the goal keeper. He will move automatically to try and block the ball, and while he acts a lot better than in the first Super Sidekicks game, it still is not the greatest. He tends to take a while getting up after a diving block, which means you really need other players in the vicinity to help out. When a goal is made, play resumes at the center line with the opposing team starting with the ball again. If you are on the offense and are approaching the goal, you may have an option appear above your head called "Chance". If you press A at this point, the view will shift to a first-person view and you can move the crosshairs quickly to aim a more precise goal kick. This generally comes up when you are just outside of the penalty box. A HUGE aspect of gameplay is sliding and tackling. It is essential to making any sort of progress in soccer, since this is how you attempt to steal the ball from the opposing players. If you tackle, you move a bit more quickly than with sliding, plus it is more effective so keep that in mind. If the ball is not under possession by any player, you can simply run up and take it by touching it. If you slide or tackle, you do not get automatic possession; you still need to get the ball yourself. Be careful when sliding/tackling however, since you can actually receive a foul which can result in a yellow (warning) or red (ejection) card. These seem to be given out randomly, and sometimes you will not get one at all since the person fouled against will not be injured. The team that was fouled against will get a "free kick" from the area where the foul occurred. This can be play in your favor if a foul occurs against you near the opposing goal. If this occurs close to the goal, you will get a "penalty kick" against the goal keeper. After a game, you will view your team's statistics in terms of goals scored and games won. You will go on to face the next team in the group, depending on the tournament selected. When you win the championship of the given tournament, the game is over. ========= Post Game ========= If in the event a game is tied after the second period ends, you will be asked to continue. When you say yes (press Start), you will have the option of how to break the tie. You can either shoot Penalty Kicks or have a Sudden Death match. If you end up losing the game (sudden death or by penalty kicks), you will have the option of continuing. This allows you to start against the same team without having to replay previous winning matches. In Penalty Kick mode, each side takes turns attempting to make a goal. The view is of the net with the goal keeper in front of it. If it is your turn to kick, you will be able to hold the joystick in one of three directions and press A to kick in that direction. If the goal keeper anticipates your aim and blocks it, you get nothing; if you make it in, you get a goal. If you are the goal keeper, you need to take a guess at where the opposing player will kick the ball and move/not move accordingly. This mode is pretty much completely random, since you can not truly know exactly where the ball will be kicked and whether or not the opposition will block correctly. After five tries each, the team with the most goals wins. If there is still a tie, there will be more single-round penalty kicks where both sides get one turn and if the tie is broken, you have a winner. Otherwise, this will continue. If you choose the Sudden Death option, you will play another regular game. The only difference is that the first team to score a goal wins the match. ***************************************************************************** -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= -= 5. Teams -= -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= NOTE: Each team has five statistics, presented in a graph of sorts. Since it is not possible to accurately depict these graphs in text form, I have described these statistics based on a visual estimate. There is even more detailed breakdowns in the Team Data menu from the title screen, but this has little effect on the overall team performance, shown here. ======== Europe A ======== Italy -----
