LENNUS II (Imagine spectacular ASCII art here. I actually have things to do.) A complete guide -----------------------------TABLE OF CONTENTS--------------------------------- -1. Table of Contents 0. Introduction 1. Equipment, locations of Bottles, and Items 2. Shopping list 3. Statistics 4. Mercenaries 5. Item Drops 6. Experience Table 7. Spells 8. Enemy Locations and Spirit Drops 9. Walkthrough (including complete list of treasure chests) --------------------------------INTRODUCTION----------------------------------- Somehow, the incredible game Lennus II does not yet have a detailed walkthrough, nor does it have charts for equipment, lists of mercenary abilities / stat growth / spirit growth, or a list of treasure chests. This game is extremely worth playing, and a document with all this information is here! Have fun playing this spectacular game. Lennus II is the sequel to the game Paladin's Quest (called Lennus in Japan), a strange looking, badly translated, but wonderfully challenging SNES game. A few of us really enjoyed that game despite its shortcomings, but it was not a hit over here in the US because US gamers prefer idiotic but nice looking games like Final Fantasy VI. So, between that and the fact that Lennus II didn't come out until the Nintendo 64 was already out, it was never ported to the US. However, now there is an English translation so we can enjoy it without having to stagger through Japanese words. LEGAL NOTICE: Does anyone really steal these things or try to sell them? Who would buy something like this? Anyway, I wrote this and all the information contained herein was actually found by me while playing the game. Please don't change it or put your name on it. Also, there is a lot of new information here which is not available anywhere else. Please don't just copy it without crediting me. ALSO, I played this game on a real cartridge, on a SNES. I do not support piracy. However, I did consult the Magic Destiny translation patch, and that is where I got all the names from. Isn't it cool that these guys, working anonymously and for free, translated this game into English better than nearly every SNES RPG that was actually published? I am accepting their translation as the official English version. ----------------------------------EQUIPMENT------------------------------------ A word of explanation on these equipment charts: The first row is Farus and the mercenaries available before Gloucester. The second row is all the mercenaries available in Eltz from Gloucester forward. The third row is the mercenaries available on Lennus. They are listed in approximately the order you will meet them, and are arranged to be lined up vertically so it's easy to see what a particular person can equip. Equipment marked with a * means that you cannot buy it: you must find it in a chest or win it from random fights. Either way, you'll only have a limited quantity of that item unless you are extremely lucky with random drops. They aren't too complicated. Strength: More strength means high damage with weapons. Pretty simple. Your very best attackers are the ones with high strength and weapons that hit multiple times. Speed: Higher Speed means that person is more likely to attack first. There is some randomness involved, but the fastest people are most likely to strike first. Helpful when you need an attack or healing bottle right away. Notice that equipping footwear changes speed quite a bit. Using a Bottle gives you a little extra speed for that turn, but even then, there's no guarantee. Higher speed helps even when using a Bottle. Stamina: Higher Stamina means more defense power. Stamina defends against physical attacks only. Wisdom: This stat actually does two things. Higher Wisdom means more powerful spells and also higher magic defense. In the first game, your magic meters gave you magic defense, but it doesn't work that way here - only your Wisdom stat gives you magic defense. Because of this, characters like Gond who have low Wisdom are more vulnerable to spells, while those like Lectus or Joynus with high Wisdom will resist magic well. The game will also show you other stats - your total defense and the attack power of each part of your body. If you have a weapon in each hand, or shoes that can perform an attack, you can see specifically how powerful it will be, which is a big improvement over the first game where you could not see this information. ----------------------------------MERCENARIES---------------------------------- For each character, I'll give you their starting level, starting stats, starting equipment, spirits, and starting levels for each spirit. 0 would be completely empty, 255 in a spirit means it is all the way maxed out. I'll also give you their stat growth rates: each character gains stats with levels at a different rate, so this will show you how their abilities grow. Be aware that all are only approximate; you may occasionally get values outside the listed range, and some mercenaries start to get better stats around level 33. Also, due to the difficulty of leveling up Rankas, Grant, Lectus, Jolt, Cyril, Flash, and Zane (they all start on a high level), the sample size I took their values from is pretty small. Take them with a grain of salt. Bear in mind that someone already on a high level won't have much of a chance to gain stats since their levels will be advancing slowly, while someone who starts on a lower level will gain many more. So don't get too excited when you see that Rankas gets huge stat gains with levels - he starts on level 35 and so will not gain very many levels before the end of the game, maybe 3. On the other hand, Polock starts on level 20, so he might gain 17 or 18 levels before the end of the game. The magic growth rate is how quickly that character's magic skill goes up, and it is different for each character and even sometimes for each spirit a character uses. 1 is the slowest rate, and it means they cannot gain more than 1 point of ability in that spirit per battle. 2 means they can learn 2 points at most (but may sometimes earn 1) and 3 is the fastest, meaning they can earn 3 spirit points for that spirit in one battle (but may earn just 1 or 2). This is important to know: For example, Joynus' Water spirit starts out very low, but she can earn 3 points per battle so it will go up fairly quickly. On the other hand, Grant's spirits also start out low, but he can only earn 1 spirit point in each per battle. If you for some reason wanted to max out Grant's magic skill, it would take a very long time. Some characters earn different spirits at different rates - for example, Gossam learns Water at the fastest 3 rate, but his other spirits at the slowest 1 rate. So, his Water will max out long before his Gold and Earth do. Remember this when giving cards to people too! ***FARUS*** The Young Raigan Spirits: Fire, Light, and Air to start, eventually can learn all spirits. All can grow at the fastest rate of 3. Starting level: 1 Starting equipment: diddly-squat Best Equipment you can buy: Best period: Tsunami Sword Gomutai Blade Giga Shield Gomutai Shield Great Armor Gomutai Armor Full Moon Helmet Gomutai Helmet Command Boots Gomutai Boots Starting stats: Progression: Early in the game: Later in the game: Strength: 25 4-7 8-10 Speed: 12 4-7 6-8 Stamina: 18 3-5 6-8 Wisdom: 24 4-6 6-10 HP: 250 50-90 70-120 Yes, I know Farus is not a mercenary, but I'm listing the other characters here so I'll list him too. Don't forget to rotate which spirits he's using to build them all up, and also to give him access to spells your allies don't have. ***ZOCK*** The Onamotopeia In Farus' Shrine at the start of the game Starting level: 2 Starting stats: Progression: Strength: 22 3-5 Speed: 22 4-6 Stamina: 18 3-6 Wisdom: 29 2-5 Max HP: 340 55-90 Starting equipment: Rod, Soft Robe, Newby Hat, Wooden Shoes Best Equipment you can buy: Best period: Middle Sword/Little Slasher Zaygos Killer Middle Shield Needle Shield Fur Coat Sage Robe Spirit Hat Sage Mask Short Boots Knife Boots Spirits: Starting: Progression: F 0 1 A 16 1 Spells: Suzan, Lelan, SpeedUp Of the mercenaries available in Andel, Zock has the highest HP and can equip the most things. He a handy guy, but like the other Andel mercenaries becomes less useful once you are out of Andel. The verdict: Take Zock at the start for his sturdiness. ***CHEST*** The Striker In Farus' Shrine at start of game Starting level: 1 Starting stats: Progression: Strength: 24 4-6 Speed: 19 4-7 Stamina: 13 3-6 Wisdom: 21 2-5 Max HP: 252 35-90 Starting equipment: Rod, Soft Robe, Newby Hat, Wooden Shoes Best Equipment you can buy: Best period: Big Slasher Death Bringer/Assassin Middle Shield Needle Shield Fur Coat Sage Robe Spirit Hat Sage Mask Short Boots Knife Boots Spirits: Starting: Progression: L 4 1 A 0 1 Spells: Kekan, Lelan, DefUp Chest gains more strength than the other Andel mercenaries, and is good with slashers, which hit a whole group of enemies. Beyond Andel, though, he's not very useful. Ironically, though he's named Chest, he's clearly the skinniest of the three male Andel mercenaries. The verdict: Take Chest if you aren't going to take Joad, and enjoy his powerful group attacks. ***JOAD*** The Empowerer In Farus' Shrine at the start of the game Starting level: 3 Starting stats: Progression: Strength: 34 3-5 Speed: 31 4-7 Stamina: 20 3-6 Wisdom: 38 3-5 Max HP: 430 45-85 Starting equipment: Rod, Soft Robe, Newby Hat, Wooden Shoes Best Equipment you can buy: Best period: Indigo Whip Bloody Whip Middle Shield Needle Shield Fur Coat Sage Robe Spirit Hat Sage Mask Short Boots Knife Boots Spirits: Starting: Progression: F 16 1 L 8 1 Spells: Suzan, Kekan, AttackUp Much like Chest, Joad can use group weapons but not quite as much armor as Zock. AttackUp is very helpful too. The verdict: Take Joad if you aren't going to use Chest, and use AttackUp to speed up boss battles. ***YUMA*** The Shocker In Farus' Shrine at the start of the game Starting level: 3 Starting stats: Progression: Strength: 20 3-5 Speed: 24 4-7 Stamina: 16 3-6 Wisdom: 27 7-9 Max HP: 325 40-90 Starting equipment: Rod, Soft Robe, Newby Hat, Wooden Shoes Best Equipment you can buy: Best period: Mega Bracer Assassin Light/Mage Ring Light/Mage/Sage Ring Sexy Dress Sexy Dress Red Ribbon Sage Mask High Heels Mesh Tights Spirits: Starting: Progression: L 16 1 G 16 1 Spells: Kekan, Kekun, Momrick Physically weak and unable to use much equipment, Yuma is nonetheless a very valuable ally at the start of the game. Her wisdom grows quickly, and Kekan and Kekun are strong. The verdict: Melina is probably a better choice, but Yuma is also fine. ***MELINA*** The Wind Machine In Farus' Shrine at the start of the game Starting level: 2 Starting stats: Progression: Strength: 18 2-5 Speed: 26 4-7 Stamina: 18 3-6 Wisdom: 24 7-9 Max HP: 300 40-90 Starting equipment: Rod, Soft Robe, Newby Hat, Wooden Shoes Best Equipment you can buy: Best period: Bracer Death Bringer Wind/Mage Ring Wind/Mage/Sage Ring Sexy Dress Sexy Dress Red Ribbon Sage Mask High Heels Mesh Tights Spirits: Starting: Progression: A 8 1 G 4 1 Spells: Lelan, Lelun, Momrick With Lelan and Lelun and high wisdom, Melina can cause a lot of magical damage. However, her equipment selection is even more limited than Yuma's. Many of the early bosses are weak against Lelan. The verdict: Use either Melina or Yuma. I recommend Melina since Lelan is so useful against bosses in Andel. ***CLAY*** The Greedy Dope Dank Tavern Starting level: 14 Starting stats: Progression: Strength: 112 5-8 Speed: 85 3-6 Stamina: 75 3-6 Wisdom: 104 3-7 Max HP: 1615 70-110 Starting equipment: Whip, Light Shield, Command Suit, Iron Helmet, Short Boots Best Equipment you can buy: Best period: Hell Whip Death Slasher/Zaygos Killer Great Shield Needle Shield Command Suit Energy Suit Full Moon Helmet Full Moon Helmet Command Boots Knife Boots Spirits: Starting: Progression: G 38 1 E 49 2 Spells: Momrick, Heal, Bottle Clay will charge you money every time you take him into a dungeon. The amount he charges is his level times 30. Because of this, taking him along is very, very expensive and will be a constant drain on your money. By the way, if you refuse to pay him, he leaves! The verdict: It's not worth it. Despite the huge cost, Clay is not any better than other mercenaries you meet. The Bottle spell is nice, but you'll meet Nikita soon. Hire him to swipe his equipment, then don't use him again. ***MYRA*** The Game's Obligatory Message About Blind Rage Dank tavern Starting level: 11 Starting stats: Progression (before Gilray Zork): Strength: 68 2-4 Speed: 90 6-8 Stamina: 58 4-6 Wisdom: 105 8-10 Max HP: 1300 35-85 Starting equipment: Little Slasher, Light Shield, Command Suit, Dawn Hat, Short Boots Best Equipment you can buy: Best period: King Slasher/Multi-arrow Light Bow (Heavy Shield) (Heavy Shield) Sexy Dress Energy Suit Red Ribbon Sage Mask Command Boots Knife Boots Spirits: Starting: Progression: F 80 2 G 64 2 Spells: Suzan, Suzun, Momrick If you take Myra to fight Gilray Zork, she will leave your party, but then you can pick her up again in Sergio, and her stat gains will be better! For now, though, her strength is pretty weak and her HP growth below average. If you do not use Myra when battling Gilray Zork, she is gone forever and you cannot hire her back. The verdict: If you want her improved form, take her. She is VERY strong after you pick her up the second time, even if she's not that great now. ***BAI*** The Thieving Asshole Nigel Slums, in the inn in the southeast part of town. Starting level: 13 Starting stats: Progression: Strength: 115 4-7 Speed: 120 5-7 Stamina: 57 3-6 Wisdom: 98 5-7 Max HP: 1250 60-110 Best Equipment you can buy: Best period: Great Lance / Multi Edge Phantom Lance (Great Shield) (Needle Shield) Command Suit Energy Suit Power Helmet Cosmic Helmet Middle Boots Middle Boots Spirits: Starting: Progression: L 63 3 E 185 2 Spells: Kekan, Heal, Escape Bai will leave the party, stealing half of your gold, if you stay at an inn with him in your party. Watch out! His battle ability is not great either. The verdict: Don't use Bai. He's dishonest AND not very strong. If you want to use him for a challenge, just avoid staying at inns. ***GOND*** The Hulk Nigel Slums, in the inn in the southeast part of town Starting level: 14 Starting stats: Progression: Strength: 127 8-12 Speed: 75 2-5 Stamina: 80 7-10 Wisdom: 68 3-6 Max HP: 1485 75-125 Best Equipment you can buy: Best period: Great Mallet Thunder Wave/Phantom Lance Warrior Ring Demon Ring Loin Cloth Energy Suit Power Helmet Power Helmet Iron Clogs Gold Clogs Spirits: Starting: Progression: F 26 1 E 42 1 Spells: Suzan, Heal, Peace Hugely powerful, Gond gains strength, HP, and stamina very quickly. He'll be able to cause tons of attack damage to enemies, if you don't mind him being slow and bad at magic. The verdict: Gond is the best mercenary you've met! Take him and keep him for a long time. Get him the Great Mallet in Gloucester and he'll wipe out everything. ***CHECHE*** The Haggler Gloucester 3rd district Starting level: 12 Starting stats: Progression: Strength: 71 4-6 Speed: 70 3-6 Stamina: 51 3-5 Wisdom: 75 4-6 Max HP: 1024 55-90 Starting equipment: Whip, Light Shield, Leather Vest, Helmet, Middle Boots Best Equipment you can buy: Best period: Hell Whip Bloody Whip Middle Shield Middle Shield Command Suit Command Suit Power Helmet Cosmic Helmet Command Boots Knife Boots Spirits: Starting: Progression: F 68 2 S 36 1 Spells: Suzan, Suzon, Gubo Having Cheche along reduces the price of everything in shops to 3/4! However, Cheche won't leave if you fire him - get him killed in battle, and then he will leave. The verdict: Fighting with Cheche is not a good idea since he is weak (plus he'll desert you if he gets knocked out in battle), but his shopping ability IS a big help. When you're going to buy something expensive, put Cheche in your party, buy it, then put him in the front, take off his armor, and let him get killed in battle. It's a pain, but the equipment in Gloucester is so good and so expensive that it may be worth it. ***BO*** The Cheerful Hothead Gloucester 3rd district Starting level: 17 Starting stats: Progression: Strength: 82 5-7 Speed: 123 4-7 Stamina: 72 4-7 Wisdom: 118 4-7 Max HP: 1320 55-95 Starting equipment: Rod, Middle Shield, Spirit Robe, Spirit Hat, Short Boots Best Equipment you can buy: Best period: Multi-arrow Light Bow (Middle Shield) (Middle Shield) Fur Coat Sage Robe Spirit Hat Sage Mask Command Boots Command Boots Spirits: Starting: Progression: F 173 2 G 84 3 S 32 2 Spells: Suzan, Suzun, Suzon, Gubo, Momrick, Grava Bo has more strength but less wisdom than the somewhat similar Karrat and Jenka. Fire is his specialty, and he likes bows as weapons. The verdict: I don't recommend Bo. He isn't strong enough to attack well, and lacks the wisdom to hit hard with spells. Then again, nearly every enemy in the huge tree dungeon is weak to fire... ***KARRAT*** The Stylish Light Mage Gloucester 3rd district Starting level: 15 Starting stats: Progression: Strength: 102 2-6 Speed: 97 6-8 Stamina: 84 3-6 Wisdom: 100 7-12 Max HP: 1410 60-105 Starting equipment: Power Slasher, Middle Shield, Spirit Robe, Helmet, Short Boots Best Equipment you can buy: Best period: King Slasher Death Slasher Middle Shield / Light Ring Middle Shield/Light Ring Battle Jacket Sage Robe Spirit Hat Sage Mask Command Boots Command Boots Spirits: Starting: Progression: L 173 2 G 36 1 S 28 2 Spells: Kekan, Kekun, Kekon, Gubo, Momrick, Grava Light magic specialist Karrat is not hugely strong, but is reasonably fast and has very high wisdom, meaning his Kekan and Gubo spells will be very deadly. The verdict: Karrat is a wonderful choice. Hire him and use his Gubo spell to obliterate everything. ***JENKA*** The Cool Breeze Gloucester 3rd district Starting level: 14 Starting stats: Progression: Strength: 62 1-4 Speed: 112 5-8 Stamina: 67 4-6 Wisdom: 108 8-10 Max HP: 1063 50-85 Starting equipment: Whip, Spirit Robe, Spirit Hat, Short Boots Best Equipment you can buy: Best period: Hell Whip Bloody Whip Middle Shield / Wind Ring Middle Shield/Wind Ring Sexy Dress Sexy Dress Red Ribbon Sage Mask High Heels Mesh Tights Spirits: Starting: Progression: A 114 2 G 108 2 S 60 3 Spells: Lelan, Lelun, Lelon, Gubo, Momrick, Grava Jenka specializes in Wind magic. She has high wisdom for powerful spells of Lelan and Gubo, but very little physical strength. It's worth noting that her Gubo spell improves faster than that of Bo or Karrat. The verdict: Jenka's spells are strong, and her Gubo powers up quickly. Take her instead of Karrat if you want a stronger Gubo at the expense of physical durablilty. Blast everything in sight with Gubo and Lelan. ***IRIS*** The Mooching Magician Gloucester 3rd district in the tavern that charges a cover Starting level: 24 Starting stats: Progression: Strength: 109 1-3 Speed: 115 6-8 Stamina: 98 4-6 Wisdom: 148 7-10 Max HP: 2150 50-70 Starting equipment: Knife, Light Ring, Dream Dress, Showy Tiara, Lovely Shoes Best Equipment you can buy: Best period: King Slasher Death Slasher Wind/Light/Mage Ring Wind/Light/Sage Ring Sexy Dress Sexy Dress Red Ribbon Sage Mask High Heels Mesh Tights Spirits: Starting: Progression: L 127 3 A 112 3 G 96 3 S 25 3 Spells: Kekan, Lelan, Kekun, Lelun, Kekon, Lelon, Gubo, Momrick, Grava, DefUp Iris requires that you buy her Light Ring, Showy Tiara, Lovely Shoes, and Dream Dress, so she is very expensive to hire. Once you do, though, you'll gain a powerful, versatile magician who is on a higher level than anyone else in your party. Her spells make her like Karrat and Jenka rolled into one, and on a higher level to boot. But her high starting level has a negative aspect as well: she will gain levels very slowly while she's with you. The verdict: Iris is wonderful. Wipe out everything with her Gubo spell, and turn her Kekan and Lelan spells against bosses. By the way, play the trivia game in Gloucester to get some of her equipment. It'll save you money. ***NIKITA*** Stripperific Gloucester 4th district, in the strip club Starting level: 17 Starting stats: Progression: Progression later in game: Strength: 110 7-10 10-15 Speed: 131 7-9 9-12 Stamina: 87 5-8 7-10 Wisdom: 116 3-7 3-7 Max HP: 1620 60-100 80-110 Starting equipment: High Heels Best Equipment you can buy: Best period: Fist of Fury Fist of Rage Warrior Ring Demon Ring Martial Clothes Energy Suit Spirit Hat Sage Mask Command Boots Knife Boots/Gold Clogs Spirits: Starting: Progression: G 36 3 E 28 3 W 4 3 Spells: Heal, Revive, Bottle, Momrick, Barrier, Magwall To hire Nikita the stripper, you must buy a bouquet from the man outside the strip joint. Then you will be allowed in the dressing room. As a physical attacker, only Dark is a match for Nikita. With the Fist of Fury (or later the Fist of Rage) she is a killing machine with loads of strength and good speed. The verdict: If you don't hire Nikita, you are crazy. She's the most effective physical fighter you'll meet until you find Dark much, much later. (And is actually more useful even than Dark - she can cast Bottle and he can't.) She's a wonderful choice for your final party. ***GAN*** The guy who is essentially Gond San Felo tavern Starting level: 27 Starting stats: Progression: Strength: 214 8-11 Speed: 137 1-4 Stamina: 162 7-10 Wisdom: 156 2-5 Max HP: 2595 80-110 Starting equipment: Spear, Loincloth, Iron Clogs Best Equipment you can buy: Best period: Great Mallet Great Mallet/Thunder Wave Warrior Ring (Demon Ring) Loin Cloth Energy Suit Power Helmet Power Helmet Iron Clogs Gold Clogs Spirits: Starting: Progression: E 28 1 S 17 1 Spells: Heal, Gubo, Slow Gan is very similar to Gond - very powerful, fast-growing strength and HP and Stamina, can use big, heavy tool-type weapons. However, his wisdom is too weak to effectively use Gubo. Gan will only join you with his wife, Lovie. When Gan is knocked out in battle, Lovie will encourage him and he'll return with more HP than the usual 1 after the battle is over. The verdict: Gan and Lovie are both great additions to your team. Hire them if you have the room. ***LOVIE*** The Magic Wife (Anyone catch the Lufia II reference?) San Felo tavern Starting level: 26 Starting stats: Progression: Strength: 124 5-7 Speed: 191 5-7 Stamina: 112 4-6 Wisdom: 218 6-9 Max HP: 2147 40-65 Starting equipment: Power Slasher, Spirit Robe, Short Boots Best Equipment you can buy: Best period: King Slasher Death Slasher Mage Ring / Middle Shield Mage/Sage Ring/Middle Shield Fur Coat Sage Robe Red Ribbon Sage Mask Command Boots Command Boots Spirits: Starting: Progression: F 42 3 L 36 3 A 28 3 S 128 2 Spells: Suzan, Kekan, Lelan, Suzon, Kekon, Lelon, Gubo, AttackUp, SpeedUp, DefUp Lovie has great wisdom and Suzan, Kekan, Lelan, and Gubo. She is a very handy person to have around! Though not physically strong, she has a lot of ways to wipe out enemies with magic. You can only hire her with Gan. Likewise, Lovie will come back with high HP after being knocked out in battle thanks to Gan's encouraging words. The verdict: Lovie is a great addition, hire her and Gan if you have room for both in your party. ***RANKAS*** The Sword Master El Gemini tavern Starting level: 35 Starting stats: Progression: Strength: 237 12-14 Speed: 182 9-13 Stamina: 204 8-10 Wisdom: 194 6-7 Max HP: 3250 90-100 Starting equipment: Heavy Sword, Heavy Shield, Heavy Armor, Long Boots Best Equipment you can buy: Best period: Tsunami Sword Light Bow Giga Shield Needle Shield Great Armor Troubled Armor Full Moon Helmet Full Moon Helmet Command Boots Knife Boots Spirits: Starting: Progression: S 36 1 Spell: Gubo The swordsman Rankas is strong, durable, on a high level, and can wear heavy equipment. With a multi-hit weapon like the Tsunami Sword or later the Light Bow, he'll cause a ton of damage. However, his magic is useless and starting on a high level means he will not get much stronger. Then again, he gains a lot of stats with levels. The verdict: Rankas is a good choice if you want someone sturdy to compliment magicians. Armed with the Light Bow, can be a very powerful attacker at the end of the game. But that's all he's good at. ***GOSSAM*** The Sailor Man Sergio tavern Starting level: 29 Starting stats: Progression: Strength: 204 9-12 Speed: 173 2-5 Stamina: 168 9-10 Wisdom: 213 2-6 Max HP: 2640 80-95 Starting equipment: Spear, Command Suit, Helmet, Command Boots Best Equipment you can buy: Best period: Earnest Pickaxe Phantom Lance / Thunder Wave Heavy Shield Power Shield Command Suit Energy Suit Power Helmet Cosmic Helmet Command Boots Knife Boots Spirits: Starting: Progression: G 94 1 E 38 1 W 68 3 Spells: Heal, Revive, Momrick, Bottle, Barrier, Magwall Gossam the sailor can use tool weapons like Gond and Gan (though not the mighty Great Mallet), but unlike them can use a variety of armor. But his max HP, speed, and magic are sub-par. The verdict: I don't find Gossam all that useful. If I want someone to use the big tool weapons, I'll get Gan or Gond who can use the Great Mallet. ***MYRA*** The Mighty Archer If you fought Gilray Zork with Myra, she will be in the tavern in Sergio, with the Void spirit. She will also gain more stats with levels now! Progression: Strength: 7-11 Speed: 6-10 Stamina: 5-9 Wisdom: 7-10 Max HP: 60-100 Spirits: Starting: Progression: F 84 1 G 64 2 V 8 3 Spells: Suzan, Suzun, Suzodon, Momrick, Sofie, SkillsUp Her stat progression gets even better beyond about level 32! Myra will be waiting for you in Sergio's tavern if you brought her into the fight with Gilray Zork. Her strength and HP will grow much faster now, and she will gain about 7 levels in her first fight back. Give her a multi-hit weapon like the Multi-arrow (or later the Light Bow) and she'll cause lots of damage. She has also gained the Void spirit. Once you can increase its power, her Suzodon will be awfully strong too. Though powerful, Myra is still not extremely sturdy. Also, her Fire magic gains slowly for some reason - give her the Fire Cards you find. The verdict: Upgraded Myra is a powerful asset to you team. As she gains levels, her strength rises quickly. She is a good choice for the end of the game. ***POLOCK*** The Elusive Sergio tavern Starting level: 20 Starting stats: Progression: Strength: 304 8-12 Speed: 352 4-6 Stamina: 325 8-12 Wisdom: 160 4-7 Max HP: 3672 95-140 Starting equipment: nothing Best Equipment you can buy: Best period: Demon's Ring Red Ribbon Red Ribbon Golden Clogs These three things are the ONLY things Polock can equip! (besides Bottles) You will not find Polock in normal gameplay unless you know where to look. To find Polock, keep entering and exiting Sergio tavern. Eventually, he will be there, at the table in the lower left corner - don't look for a man, Polock looks like a round, orange fish. The odds are somewhere on the order of 1/30, so it may take quite a few tries. You cannot get Polock back with a Summon Tavern or the Hire spell - if you release him, you will have to go back to Sergio's tavern and enter and leave until he shows up again. Polock is incredibly strong - his HP, strength, and stamina are by far the highest in the game and also increase very fast with levels. His drawbacks are that he has no spirits and can equip almost nothing. However, once you find the Golden Clogs, he will be the most powerful attacker in the game with the possible exception of Nikita or Dark with the Fist of Rage. The verdict: Polock makes the game an awful lot easier, both by being a meat shield at the front of the line and by wiping out groups of enemies once he has the Golden Clogs. If you can stomach his lack of magic, he's a wonderful ally. ***LUCAS*** Light Master In Training Reiyold tavern Starting level: 26 Starting stats: Progression: Strength: 142 5-8 Speed: 176 6-8 Stamina: 135 4-6 Wisdom: 215 6-8 Max HP: 2130 75-110 Starting equipment: Power Slasher, Bracer, Spirit Hat, Spirit Robe, Short Boots Best Equipment you can buy: Best period: King Slasher Death Slasher Light/Mage Ring Light/Mage/Sage Ring Battle Jacket Sage Robe Power Helmet Sage Mask Command Boots Command Boots Spirits: Starting: Progression: L 80 2 S 58 2 W 32 3 V 27 1 Spells: Kekan, Kekon, Kekodon, Kekowall, Gubo, Revive, Sofie, Spela, Gogobol, Wall Lucas has high wisdom and learns quickly (since he starts on a relatively low level). He is the best user of Light magic and his Gubo and Spela spells are helpful too. Though not physically very strong, he's not as flimsy as some of the magicians. His magic starts out weak - he will be useful only when you've built his magic up. If you don't want to take that time, he's weak. But if you do, he's mighty strong with magic. The verdict: Use Lucas only if you intend to keep him around for a while. Since his levels start a bit low, he won't seem that great at first, and will be useful only with some time spent building his levels and magic. Take the time, though, and he'll be a powerful spiritualist. Light magic is very helpful in the battles against Bejould, Belts, and Granada. ***DARK*** The Karate Master Reiyold tavern Starting level: 30 Starting stats: Progression: Strength: 243 12-14 Speed: 210 11-14 Stamina: 168 9-11 Wisdom: 206 2-6 Max HP: 2712 80-115 Starting equipment: Newby Hat, Martial Clothes, Iron Clogs Best Equipment you can buy: Best period: Fist of Fury Fist of Rage Warrior Ring Demon Ring Martial Clothes Energy Suit Noon Hat Noon Hat Command Boots Gold Clogs Spirits: Starting: Progression: G 86 2 W 174 3 Spells: Revive, Momrick, Barrier Dark is almost exactly the same as Nikita. His power, speed, and stamina all soar with each level. Probably the only drawback is that he cannot use the Bottle spell while Nikita can. However, Dark can use tool-type weapons like the Earnest Pickaxe and Thunder Wave if that helps you. The verdict: Dark is absolutely one of the best. His power is second only to Polock, and even then only if Polock has the Gold Clogs. With Dark using the Fist of Rage, the end of the game will be much, much easier. However, Nikita can do everything Dark does but also has the Bottle spell - she might be a better choice! ***LECTUS*** The Scroo Wind Master Ratsurk tavern Starting level: 36 Starting stats: Progression: Strength: 221 6-8 Speed: 241 7-8 Stamina: 196 5-6 Wisdom: 307 7-8 Max HP: 3210 60-95 Starting equipment: Whip, Bracer, Battle Jacket, Iron Helmet, Long Boots Best Equipment you can buy: Best period: Hell Whip Bloody Whip Heavy Shield Needle Shield Battle Jacket Sage Robe Power Helmet Sage Mask Command Boots Knife Boots Spirits: Starting: Progression: A 235 1 S 125 3 W 85 3 V 36 2 Spells: Lelan, Lelon, Lelodon, Lelowall, Gubo, Revive, Sofie, Spela, Gogobol, Wall Air magic and colossal wisdom are Lectus' strengths. His air attack spells, and his Gubo spell, can cause a lot more damage than the same spells can with other casters because of his high wisdom. Spela is handy also. The verdict: Lectus is a great choice if you like magic. I like using Lectus as a compliment to Dark or Polock who have little or no magic. ***GRANT*** The Guy Who Should Train Instead of Obsessing About Lectus Ratsurk tavern Starting level: 34 Starting stats: Progression: Strength: 237 2-4 Speed: 228 1-4 Stamina: 204 2-3 Wisdom: 244 1-2 Max HP: 3370 35-70 Starting equipment: Whip, Bracer, Battle Jacket, Iron Helmet, Long Boots Best Equipment you can buy: Best period: Tsunami Sword Death Slasher/Zaygos Killer Giga Shield Needle Shield Battle Jacket Battle Jacket Full Moon Helmet Full Moon Helmet Command Boots Knife Boots Spirits: Starting: Progression: G 128 1 E 96 1 W 64 1 V 32 1 Spells: Revive, Heal, Sofie, Momrick, Bottle, SkillsUp, Barrier, Wall, Magwall, Martyr Grant really hates Lectus, for some reason, so they can't both join you at once. Grant's array of support spells is fairly useful, but the fact is he has no attack spells, not a lot of attacking strength, and terrible stat gains with levels. He can't deal out much damage no matter what you equip him with. Also, his magic improves very slowly. The verdict: Grant is not very useful. I don't recommend him at all. ***JOYNUS*** The Prodigy Ratsurk, in the Magic School Starting level: 24 Starting stats: Progression: Strength: 115 1-3 Speed: 161 7-8 Stamina: 121 4-6 Wisdom: 230 8-11 Max HP: 2150 50-100 Starting equipment: Spirit Robe, Spirit Hat, Short Boots Best Equipment you can buy: Best period: Multi-arrow/Giga Bracer Death Bringer/Light Bow Light/Fire/Wind/Mage Ring Light/Fire/Wind/SageRing Command Suit Command Suit Red Ribbon Sage Mask Command Boots Knife Boots Spirits: Starting: Progression: F 204 3 L 198 3 A 174 3 W 32 3 Spells: Suzan, Kekan, Lelan, Revive, Suzowall, Kekowall, Lelowall, AttackUp, SpeedUp, DefUp Huge wisdom, attack spells from all three elements, and pretty good stat gains in every area but strength make Joynus a formidable magician despite her young age. She can also boost attack, speed, and defense. Joynus joins at a somewhat low level, but that means she will gain levels quickly when she joins. Her Fire, Light, and Air magic starts nearly full, and her Suzan, Kekan, and Lelan are colossally strong. You may think she has only single-enemy attack spells, but don't forget when fully charged those three spells hit a whole group! The verdict: Joynus' huge spell power is very useful, especially against bosses. If you are going to use her, hire her right away so she can get some levels and her Water magic strengthened. I like using her for the Lennus bosses and the end of the game - when Granada is getting beaned by her Kekan every turn, he doesn't have a chance. ***JOLT*** The Mining Machine Jurayn tavern Starting level: 34 Starting stats: Progression: Strength: 270 10-12 Speed: 137 3-5 Stamina: 197 9-11 Wisdom: 161 3-5 Max HP: 3650 90-125 Starting equipment: Unique Shovel, Earnest Pickaxe, Command Suit, Helmet, Middle Boots Best Equipment you can buy: Best period: Great Mallet Thunder Wave Heavy Shield Needle Shield Command Suit Energy Suit Power Helmet Cosmic Helmet Command Boots Knife Boots Spirits: Starting: Progression: E 132 3 V 26 2 Spells: Heal, Sofie, Martyr Jolt uses tool weapons like Gond and Gan, but does not have as much strength as they do. He does, however, have better armor selection. His magic is not very useful. The verdict: Jolt just isn't strong enough to really be useful. I don't find that he helps much. Use Gond or Gan if you want access to the tool weapons. ***CYRIL*** The Whining Baby Jurayn tavern Starting level: 36 Starting stats: Progression: Strength: 235 11-12 Speed: 177 8-10 Stamina: 161 8-10 Wisdom: 218 5-7 Max HP: 2120 80-90 Starting equipment: Heavy Sword, Heavy Shield, Heavy Armor, Iron Helmet, Long Boots Best Equipment you can buy: Best period: Tsunami Sword Death Slasher Giga Shield Needle Shield Great Armor Troubled Armor Full Moon Helmet Full Moon Helmet Command Boots Knife Boots Spirits: Starting: Progression: G 64 2 S 58 2 W 38 2 V 41 2 Spells: Gubo, Momrick, Revive, Sofie, Grava, Barrier, SkillsUp, Wall, Spela, Gogobol Cyril will desert your party if he gets knocked out or reduced to low HP in battle. Do you really want someone like that in your party? He also has very low max HP. On the other hand, he can equip just about anything and has a pile of useful support spells. The verdict: Cyril's good points don't come close to outweighing his bad points. Don't use him unless you're just looking for a fiendish challenge. ***FLASH*** The Jack of All Trades Misuto, in Zaran's shop Starting level: 35 Starting stats: Progression: Strength: 235 7-9 Speed: 232 7-8 Stamina: 164 5-7 Wisdom: 265 7-9 Max HP: 3140 65-115 Starting equipment: Multi-arrow, Battle Jacket, Power Helmet, Knife Boots Best Equipment you can buy: Best period: King Slasher Death Slasher/Light Bow Giga Shield (Needle Shield) Heavy Armor Heavy Armor Full Moon Helmet Full Moon Helmet Command Boots Knife Boots/Gold Clogs Spirits: Starting: Progression: E 214 2 S 104 2 W 85 2 V 32 2 Spells: Gubo, Sofie, Heal, Revive, Slow, Magwall, Martyr, Spela, Gogobol, Wall Flash talks up his speed, but he isn't really all that fast. He's above average in speed, but that's about it. But he does have good equipment selection, Gubo, Spela, and can use the Light Bow. The verdict: Flash is good all-round, especially if you give him the Light Bow. Then he'll have strong attack and his high Wisdom allows use of a powerful Gubo spell. ***ZANE*** The Flame Knight Conshiuto tavern Starting level: 33 Starting stats: Progression: Strength: 245 6-8 Speed: 180 5-7 Stamina: 175 4-6 Wisdom: 282 6-8 Max HP: 3124 60-115 Starting equipment: Lance, Heavy Armor, Power Helmet, Long Boots Best Equipment you can buy: Best period: Tsunami Sword Zaygos Killer/Phantom Lance Giga Shield Needle Shield Great Armor Troubled Armor Power Helmet Cosmic Helmet Command Boots Knife Boots Spirits: Starting: Progression: F 218 1 S 107 3 W 108 3 V 51 2 Spells: Suzan, Suzon, Suzodon, Gubo, Revive, Sofie, Suzowall, Spela, Gogobol, Wall Zane's wisdom is high, giving him lots of power with his specialty, Fire magic. Also, he can equip pretty much anything. Though his stat gains are only okay, Zane's a useful guy if you need Fire. The verdict: Another good magician, Zane can equip more powerful armor than the otherwise similar Lectus and Lucas. Zane is a very handy guy. ***RICH JR*** The Ultimate Mercenary Just inside the Throne of Immortals Starting level: 28 Starting stats: Progression: Strength: 232 7-8 Speed: 206 5-7 Stamina: 195 5-6 Wisdom: 257 6-8 Max HP: 3495 75-115 Starting equipment: Budding Sword, Needle Shield, Troubled Armor, New Moon Helmet, Gomutai Boots, Mega Bottle Best Equipment you can buy: Best period: Tsunami Sword Gomutai Blade Giga Shield Gomutai Shield Great Armor Gomutai Armor Full Moon Helmet Gomutai Helmet Command Boots Gomutai Boots Spirits: Starting: Progression: F 255 n/a L 255 n/a A 255 n/a V 1 3 Spells: Suzan, Kekan, Lelan, Suzodon, Kekodon, Lelodon, Sofie, AttackUp, SpeedUp, DefUp RichJr (the son of Mouth, the greatest mercenary in Paladin's Quest), is mighty nice. Huge HP, great equipment, and the spells of Suzan, Kekan, Lelan, Suzodon, Kekodon, and Lelodon. He even starts on a lowish level, so his stats continue to go up. The only drawback is that his Void magic starts out very low, making his -odon spells useless at first. RichJr will leave your party if you stay at an inn (at least he doesn't steal your money), and won't return to you with the Hire spell or Summon Tavern. To get him back, you'll have to return to where you found him in the Throne of Immortals. So, when using RichJr, just buy medicine and restore HP that way; avoid inns. The verdict: RichJr is a great meat shield, and probably the best all-around mercenary, but if you want to realize his full potential, pick him up as soon as you can and build his Void magic. If you use him, you may want to save Void Cards for him. ***MECHA*** Karon Mechas don't have levels and cannot get experience. Build one in Karon by using the various parts you find in the castles of the four angels and in the Throne of Immortals. Better parts = better abilities and stats. Mecha cannot be healed by medicine or inns, which can be a problem even if it has high stats. Putting one together out of the best parts, though, gives you a very powerful companion - he can attack all enemies and will have around 8000 max HP. Be aware that when you use the dismiss command to get rid of Mecha, he is disassembled and you can't get those parts back! Best parts: Body GR, Arm-XX, Head-99 The verdict: I find Mechas more trouble than they are worth, but if you want to use one, wait until you have the very best parts. Your Mecha will wipe out enemies very quickly. -----------------------------------DROPS--------------------------------------- Here I am listing the important drops I have found - mostly equipment or other rare/expensive/useful things. I am not going to bother to list every enemy that drops a card or stat-boosting item. This list is simply what I have run across - it is by no means complete. When I win an item from multiple enemies and I'm not sure which one carries it, they are all listed. Especially notable drops are in ALL CAPS. I am not 100% sure about the item drop mechanics in this game, but it seems that each enemy can drop only one item, and that the percentages vary. One enemy may drop its item 1/5 of the time, another 1/40 of the time. Even a character two or three levels lower than his teammates will gain levels noticeably faster. Also, the levels continue to be spaced further out throughout the game (at least until level 42), meaning it's a bit tough to keep gaining levels at the end of the game. For example, if a character has the Fire spirit and the Gold spirit, they can cast Suzan (Fire), Momrick (Gold), and Suzun (Fire and Gold). Mercenaries have a set spell list, but it's a little different with Farus. At the start of the game, Farus has access to three spirits, but can only use one at a time (go to the Spirit Exchange or use a Spirit Orb to change which spirits Farus is using). When you have four spirits, you can use two at a time, when you have six you can use three at a time, and when you gather all eight, you can use four at a time for a total of ten spells. Each character has a spirit meter that shows how strong they are with each spirit. On the status screen, you get a number from 0 to 255, 255 being the most powerful a spirit can be. On the spirit meter screen, you see your spirit power represented by a sort of bar graph with zeros over it. Each zero is a level that spirit has gained, and the bars are your progress towards the next level: once you have seven zeros plus a full line of bars, that spirit is maxed. Spells get more powerful with more bars, and gain a big leap in power (some even look different) each time a spirit advances a level. The other factor in determining the power of a spell is the caster's Wisdom stat. More Wisdom means more powerful spells - a spell cast by Gan (low Wisdom) will be much weaker than the same cast by Lectus (high Wisdom). To make spirits more powerful, you need to fight enemies. You do NOT have to cast spells in battle like you did in Paladin's Quest. Enemies leave little icons showing you what spirits they drop: Orange circle = Fire Spiky ball = Light Whirlwind = Wind Gold diamond = Gold Dog poo with green fuzz on it (yes, I know it's supposed to be a tree) = Earth Crescent moon = Sky Droplet = Water Black rectangle = Void ...So if you are trying to increase, say, someone's Void spirit, make sure you are battling enemies that leave the Void spirit, or you won't get anywhere. Here are all of the spells, plus a short explanation of their effects: FF - Suzan LL - Kekan AA - Lelan These three are your basic attack spells - they attack a single enemy and cause a lot of damage. As a bonus, when they get nearly full, they will cause significant damage to splash onto other enemies in the same group as your target! No spells can cause more damage to a single enemy - the easiest way to win boss fights quickly is to hit the boss' weak point with one of these from a high-Wisdom character. FG - Suzun LG - Kekun AG - Lelun The -un spells are group attacks and all require the Gold spirit. Though less powerful per enemy, they tear through a whole group. FS - Suzon LS - Kekon AS - Lelon Mix with Sky and you have the -on spells, which target all enemies at once. However, these spells are not useful very often because they don't do very much damage to each enemy. FV - Suzodon LV - Kekodon AV - Lelodon When you first gain access to these spells, you will think they are useless. They only hit one enemy and are weaker than Suzan, Kekan, and Lelan. However, once both spirits involved are full or nearly full, the Void-powered spells will hit every enemy on the screen for massive damage. Build up Void and use these to wipe out random fights with ease! SS - Gubo The only non-elemental attack spell, Gubo hits every enemy on the screen. Though weak at first, Gubo's power increases very quickly and when built up can wipe out whole enemy groups in one shot! Mercenaries with high Wisdom and Gubo are valuable - Karrat, Jenka, Iris, Lovie, Lucas, Lectus, Flash, and Zane all qualify as mighty Gubo users. SV - Gogobol An instant death spell that will probably remove some random enemies from the battle... permanently! Ha ha ha ha! FL - AttackUp FA - SpeedUp LA - DefUp GV - SkillsUp These spells increase a specific attribute (SkillsUp increases Attack, Defense, and Speed all at once). When your spirit power is low, you can cast these on one ally only. When your spirit power is higher, it will hit the person you cast it on but will randomly hit another person too. A little higher, and it will hit the target plus TWO other party members. Finally, when your spirit power is very high, the game will stop asking you for a target and you will cast the spell on all four party members at once! FW - Suzowall - resists Fire magic LW - Kekowall - resists Light magic AW - Lelowall - resists Air magic EW - MagWall - resists all magic GW - Barrier - resists physical attacks WV - Wall - reflects some physical damage back to enemy All of these spells target party members in the same way as the ability increasing spells above. When powered up far enough, they will target everybody at once. Wall, unfortunately, doesn't reflect nearly as much damage as the wonderful AtBack spell did in the first game... GS - Grava SW - Spela These spells summon a protective spirit - Grava absorbs physical attacks and Spela absorbs magic attacks. You cannot use them both at once. Each will take attacks instead of the party, but will vanish after suffering a certain amount of damage. GE - Bottle - Takes a dose of medicine, and divides it evenly among all four members. It's the only way to heal everyone at once. Of course, if you are not wearing a bottle or your bottle is empty, you can't cast Bottle. It's much more effective with the bigger bottles like the Giga Bottle! WW - Revive - Brings back a knocked out party member in battle. When spirit power is low, they come back with 10 HP, but when your Water is powered up enough, they come back with full HP! EV - Martyr - Caster dies, but everyone else is healed. Use this when desperate! Don't forget you can revive the person if someone has the Revive spell. EE - Heal - removes bad status conditions. GG - Momrick - Freezes an enemy group, if it works. ES - Slow - Slows down enemies, if it works. VV - Sofie - Reduces enemy defense, if it works. FE - Peace - Random encounters happen less often. LE - Escape - Takes you out of a dungeon. AE - Hire - Recall any previously hired mercenary, except for Polock, RichJr, and Mecha. It also won't summon Myra back between Gilray Zork and Sergio. -------------------------ENEMY LOCATIONS AND SPIRIT DROPS---------------------- This guide lists the locations of every random enemy in the game (that I have found), arranged by location. Also, you'll see what spirits they drop for you, which is important for building magic. For example, a quick glance at this list will tell you that the Aerial Fortress is a great place to build Sky or Void, but a poor place to build Earth and a completely useless place to build Light. I have not listed bosses here, since nearly every boss simply drops all spirits. Forga drops Light only, and when you battle the Spirits in their temples, they leave only their one type of spirit - for example, the Earth Spirit will give you lots of Earth spirits but nothing else. Farus is just as confused about this as you, the player, are... but you are able to make out by talking to people that you are the one prophesied to complete something called the Great Union. What is the Great Union? No one seems to know what it is, but they have been waiting thousands of years for it. Your task in the first part of the game is to collect the four items from the four continents to bring about the Great Union. In the shrine, you'll meet five warriors who are ready and willing to journey with you. They are the first of many, many mercenaries you will meet in the game; however, it will be quite a while before you meet any more. I recommend two of the strong guys (Zock, Chest, Joad) and either Yuma or Melina. I find Zock, Chest, and Melina to be best. However, it's your choice. Head outside and start getting used to the game! The land you are in is called Andel - a strange underground world consisting of four floating continents. You are now on the continent of Al Terran, but your journey will take you to Du Terran, Kua Terran, and Tol Terran. Each continent has a dungeon containing the item needed for the Great Union. Before adventuring out, let's talk a few mechanics of Lennus II. The battle system is a little different than what you may be used to. Casting spells take HP from the caster. In this game, the HP total of the spells you cast is fairly negligible - the single-enemy spells you have at the start cost only 9 HP (Everyone's max HP will be around 300 and increasing quickly from there), so use the spells as much as you need. To heal HP, you need medicine in bottles. Here at the start of the game, you'll have Mini Bottles, which heal 800 HP with each use. Each bottle can hold 9 doses. You can buy medicine refills at a tool shop, and they all get refilled when staying at an inn, but for now you can fill them for free in the shrine. You can also get your HP refilled for free by talking to the lady in the kitchen. Bottles can be carried in the hand or at the belt. The belt usually makes more sense because you can't equip anything else there, while you need your hands for weapons and shields. Besides the Mini Bottle, you can find an Anti Bottle early on which cures some status problems. Later on you will find bottles with more healing power, and some with other powers. Much like the first Lennus game (AKA Paladin's Quest), you can hire and fire the other members of your party at will. Any time you want to kick someone out, go to "party", then "dismiss". You have the option of taking their equipment or leaving it on them - if you leave their equipment on, that person will still have it if you hire them again. Regardless of which option you choose, you keep any bottles they had equipped. Most mercenaries charge you the first time you hire them but all are free to hire subsequently. However, some do not charge, and the first five, thankfully, are free to hire. If you fire someone and then want them back, you have to go back where you first found them and they will be there. You can also use the Summon Tavern item or the Hire spell, but those are not available in Andel. For now, just head back to the shrine if you want to change party members. Play with the various mercenaries, but then make a decision and stick with it. Take the three mercenaries you choose and start fighting some battles. You'll gain experience, money, and spirits. When an enemy leaves a spirit, anyone who uses that spirit might gain a spirit point (they are shown at the end of each battle). There is some randomness involved; if you defeat a bunch of enemies who leave Fire, somebody will get a Fire point, and maybe more than one person. Each person may gain 1 Fire point, or some might gain 2 or 3; it depends on the person. Gond is not that good at magic, and he can only gain 1 spirit point in a battle, no more. But Joynus might gain two or three of each spirit. See Mercenary section for more on which mercenaries learn spells quickly. One more note. Don't forget to line up your party properly. Like many of these games, the person in front will take more enemy hits, so put the sturdiest people up front and the least in the back. For now, Farus should be first, Yuma/Melina in the back, and Zock/Chest/Joad in between. Later in the game as you meet powerful mercenaries, don't be afraid to switch up your order. Some of the stronger ones like Rankas and RichJr are sturdier than Farus and are great to put in front of the party. --------------------------------PART 1: ANDEL---------------------------------- The first town, Gwandell, is south of the shrine. Take a look around and start buying equipment for your party. It will take a while, but buy what you can and save up. Unlike Paladin's Quest, you CAN equip you mercenaries, and you certainly should. Throughout this game, you will actually have trouble buying equipment if you try to save for it by grinding out battles. Your best source of money is selling equipment you find in chests. Also, if you are not going to use a mercenary, hire them anyway and strip off their equipment. You can then use or sell it. This would be a really cruel thing to do in real life, but this is a video game, so don't feel bad. Your first task, when you feel ready for it, is to head into the Al Rouge dungeon and recover the first item, the Red Sleep. It's okay, and probably a good idea, to come in and out several times to explore every passage. Doughren, the boss, is not too tough - and when he gets to low HP, he'll start eating eggs to heal himself but will stop attacking. As long as you can deal more than he heals, you've got him. Take the Gwanji Egg and the Red Sleep behind him. What's this? A big head appears in the air and tries to talk to you! It's hard to make out what he's saying... Al Rouge treasures: Flight Door, Home Door, Mini Bottle, Anti Bottle, Dagger, Light Shield, Mini Bottle. Take the egg to Ben, the eagle-looking guy at the back of Gwandell town. Ben will take you to the second continent, Du Terran. You now have the Eagle's Flute, use this and the bird will pick you up and ferry you between continents. (He can only take you to continents you have already visited.) Your quest on Du Terran is essentially the same: enter the Du Flair dungeon and recover the Blue Flame. Hang around town for a bit gaining experience and spirits, buy some equipment upgrades, and go to Du Flair (the cave). Du Flair has some puzzle aspects to it - switches on the floor toggle whether the floor flames or the flame jets are on (one will be off when the other is on). When you find the kid Kai at the bottom, he'll attack you! Soon, he'll become a fiery monster called Zuzanut. Lelan would be a good idea. Kai, thankfully, is okay and will return to town. Take the Blue Flame, and the same mysterious face will appear. Why does he appear to talk to you? And what is he trying to say? Du Flair treasures: Flight Door, Home Door, Canvas Shoes, Anti Bottle, Little Slasher With the Blue Flame, the man on the mayor's roof in Revenant can send you to the other two continents, Tol Terran and Kua Terran. Visit both, and the Eagle Flute can now take you to any of the four continents! You have several tasks now, which you can tackle in any order. The town of Gondo Ata on Tol Terran is under attack by an evil man named Forga. Also on Tol Terran, there is the Gold Temple - a visit to that temple will get Farus the Gold spirit (and the ability to use two spirits at the same time). On Kua Terran, meanwhile, you'll find a Giant's house but the giant has been split up into a bunch of little people. (No, it doesn't make sense...) I recommend saving Gondo Ata first, but be sure to visit the Giant's house because there are weapon and armor stores there which sell the best equipment in Andel. Talk to everyone in Gondo Ata, and take the key from the safe using the combination the man gives you. The right safe is U R R L D, L R L D D is center, and D D U L L opens the left safe. In the nearby cave Tol Mira, unlock the MIDDLE door to go straight to Forga. He'll attack when you open the chest at the end of the path - Suzan and Lelan will both work well. Beat him to save Gondo Ata. You don't want to muck around after you've visited Gondo Ata before finishing off Forga, because if you do, more and more people in the town die. (I am fairly sure this does not have any effect on gameplay.) You can then get the other two keys from the safes - explore all three paths in the cave to find the Black Light, equipment, and the White Shadow, an item which doesn't do anything but can be sold later in the game. Hey, remember the strange floating head who talked to you when you picked up the Red Sleep and the Blue Flame? When you take the Black Light, his speech is getting clearer. He seems to be telling you not to complete the Great Union! Who is he? Should you listen to him? The short answer is that you cannot advance the plot unless you complete the Great Union, so take the Black Light. Tol Mira treasures: Twin Arrow, Mini Bottle, Hunter's Knife, Light Shield, Purpbird Feather, White Shadow The Gold Temple is also on Tol Terran, northwest of the town. The only tricky part here is the top floor, which looks like a huge pit. The floor below shows you via the carpeting where you can walk on the floor above - the solid carpet is under the pit, but there's an invisible walkway above the places where the carpet is in the longer, thinner strips. Battle the Gold Spirit, and Farus earns the ability to use Gold spells! There is only one chest in the Gold Temple, which contains - no surprise - a Gold Card. The Giant's house on Kua Terran is your next stop. There are two small caves in the southeast corner of the house, one is the Giant's heart and the other his head. Travel through them, taking out the enemies, and when both are restored the Giant is whole again. Both are easy enough that I will not even walk you through them. If you want to kill the Germ enemies in the head quickly, use Lelan. It's also very effective against the Virus mini-boss. Treasures in Giant's Head: Dragon's Horn Treasures in Giant's Heart: Preyer Tears Now that Igles the giant is full size again, ride on him to cross to Kua Terran's dungeon, Kua Gerger. The cliff that blocks the way is no problem for Igles' long legs. Kua Gerger is a royal pain-in-the-butt puzzle dungeon - the water on the floors blocks your path, but appears and disappears depending on which switches you step on. The sign inside the entrance doesn't actually seem to have anything to do with what the switches do. Stepping on a switch gets rid of water, and you can step on a second switch to remove a second color of water... but sometimes for no apparent reason, other switches will raise, and restore their water. Confused? Yeah, me too. I have yet to figure it out besides simple trial and error. Any help here would be appreciated. I don't think it is possible to trap yourself in the Kua Gerger, but I am not sure. You ought to bring a Flight Door just in case. Explore to find the boss, Mad Mudbron. Again, Lelan is your best bet. Retrieve the last piece of the Great Union puzzle, the Green Rage. The floating head guy is in color this time, but what is he saying? Treasures in Kua Gerger: Middle Shield, Tunic, Whip, Tough Robe, Power Slasher, High Bottle Back at the shrine, you're ready for the Great Union! BUT, be SURE you have the Gold Spirit. You will not have another chance to get it. Also, the five mercenaries down here will not be available again unless you've hired them already - they're not useful later in the game, but if you're a completionist, make sure you've hired them all at least once so you can recall them later. You'll place the items on the pedestal and the Union will begin... but it's not what anyone expected. The four continents crash together, and meanwhile Farus and the party are transported magically upwards. What the hell just happened? ---------------------PART 2: NIGEL, PETRO, AND THE SEALS----------------------- You'll come to in sunlight - the first sunlight you've seen in the whole game! Andel was underground, but you're now on the surface, a place called Eltz. A bizarre, cruel, yet hot witch by the name of Efrem greets you, and tells you that someone named Granada has been using you to put his sinister plan in motion. Your quest from this point forward will be to STOP the Great Union that Granada is attempting! She then turns your mercenaries to stone and leaves. Southward is the small town of Dank, but you'll soon find that anyone you talk to turns to stone. A chest in a house, though, gives you an item that lets you into a nearby tower, and also instructions that tell you that the tower has the cure for the stone curse. The letter is signed Petro... who is Petro and how did he seem to know we'd be here? Head to the tower. You have no way to heal your companions, so you have to fight as Farus alone, but thankfully the battles are not all that tough. At the top, the witch Efrem attacks you, but she is not that hard to defeat as Farus alone. Just past, you'll be cured from the stone curse! Your mercenaries will be able to fight again. Treasures in the Temple of Purification: Gubo Milk, Leather Shoes, Noon Hat, Middle Sword, Leather Vest, Bracer, Gold Card Head back to Dank. Now the good people of Dank are easier to talk to. Talk to everyone, and you'll learn that the land you are in is called Eltz, and there is a huge castle and city to the south called Nigel. You'll be spending a lot of time around Nigel very soon, but first visit the tavern in Dank. So far, you've had only those first five mercenaries to choose from. You're about to have a whole ton more, and you'll be meeting them so fast you won't know what to do. I'll help you out. You'll meet two new mercenaries here at the Dank tavern. Clay is not recommended - he seems like a good hire, but will charge you extra money every time you take him into a dungeon. However, talk to the other one, Myra. She launches into a huge tirade against an evil man named Gilray Zork, who murdered her family. She wants to join you and hopes to run into Gilray, whom she wants to murder in the most gruesome way possible. It might be a good idea to take Myra along. You will meet Gilray Zork fairly soon, and you may want Myra with you when you meet him. Fire whomever is the least productive and take Myra. To the south, you will come to a gate leading into the easternmost reaches of the sprawling Nigel cityscape, the Nigel Slums. You can't get into the rest of the city; only people with Green Cards are allowed, and you don't have one. But the slums are enormous. BEFORE YOU EXPLORE THEM, SAVE. There are pickpockets and other disreputable folks around. You'll want to save often in case you lose money. Explore. Talk to Jubal, who tells you that Preyzus makes perfect counterfeit Green Cards. Talk to Preyzus and his daughter, who tell you that Preyzus needs Darul's Glasses to work properly and that those glasses are in the hands of Darul in the nearby mine. She gives you the Spark Lamp, which you'll need in the mine. You see where this is going... Walk upstairs in the tavern on the northeast part of the Slums. Soldiers will whisk you away to meet with Petro, the ruler of the whole Nigel area. Petro tells you that you need seven seals to stop Granada from completing his evil plan. He also reveals that he was the man trying to contact you in Andel as you were trying to complete the Great Union! Does he give you a Green Card and a Communter Pass, making travel throughout his realm easier? No. He dumps you back in the slums. Before going into the mine, visit the inn on the south side of town. Two more mercenaries are here - Bai and Gond. I'll save you some trouble and tell you NOT to take Bai. If you stay at an inn, he will vanish with half of your money! But Gond is great - he's big and strong and can cause a lot of damage. Replace another of your starting mercenaries with Gond. Spend some time equipping and leveling your party (especially Myra and Gond), and head to the mine. If you fall off the walkway, you'll land in the basement - some of the chests down here are Wildboxes, an enemy with lots of HP. I recommend you DO open these, as you'll win lots of experience and gold. Search thoroughly - you need to find and defeat Darul to get his glasses. Kekan and Lelan will work. Be sure to grab the First Seal as well! The seals are not in treasure chests, each looks like a wooden box hovering over a podium. Also find the chest that contains a... flute? Why is there a flute in here? Keep it around, you'll see. Treasures in the mine: Wildbox, Wildbox, Wildbox, 1000G, Flight Door, Random Hammer, Short Boots, Slimy Sweat, Spear, High Bottle, Flute, Darul's Glasses Back in the Slums, take Darul's glasses to Preyzus, and he will make you a Green Card (choose "Bromide" when he asks you what you want, and you'll get a Green Card anyway and you can sell the Bromide later). Now, you can pass the border guard on the west side of the Slums and get into the next district of Nigel, the commercial district called Gloucester. Wow! Gloucester is unimaginably huge! There are four separate parts of Gloucester - the first (easternmost) has lots of useful weapon and armor shops; the second fashion shops (with some good equipment for your female mercenaries); the third a bunch of taverns containing mercenaries; and the fourth theaters, concert halls, and a strip club. What are you going to do now? There seem like so many things... Explore thoroughly, then start deciding on mercenaries. You have a lot of options. See the mercenary guide, but the short answer is that Iris, Jenka, and Karrat are your best magicians and Nikita is your best fighter. Those four, Gond, and Myra are your best choices for now in my humble opinion. Again though, it's up to you. You are going to meet Gilray Zork soon, so you may want to have Myra. If you fight Gilray Zork with Myra, she will leave but be available later in the game as a more powerful mercenary! If you fight him without Myra, she will no longer be available. By the way, there is a way to make the hiring of Iris cheaper. She requires that you bring her the Light Ring, Showy Tiara, Lovely Shoes, and Dream Dress and once you do she will join you at no further charge. Buying that stuff is expensive! But, you won some Lovely Shoes from Efrem. In the tavern where you find Bo, battle the three drunkards then talk to the bartender. He'll sell you an Amity Card for 1000G. Now, use the Amity Card to get into the quiz show down the stairs near the gate in the tavern district. Save before trying the quiz show, then try all three levels. It costs 1000G to play, but just reset if you don't answer enough questions right so you don't have to keep spending money. Winning on all three levels nets you a Triple Arrow, a Showy Tiara, and a Light Ring! All you have to do is buy the Dream Dress and you're set to hire Iris and have saved a lot of money. In the fourth area of Gloucester, there is a concert hall. Head in, and the conductor will tell you that someone stole the instruments from his chamber ensemble. He will take back the flute you've already found, and he will tell you that he needs all of the instruments to play his piece. The other four are out there. If you run across them, bring them back here, but don't expect a reward. The instrument sidequest is completely pointless. Now is the time to start equipping your party. Unlike most games, you're still fairly early in this one but almost all of the best equipment is for sale right here in Gloucester. Don't worry about trying to buy every single great thing in Gloucester right now, you'll be around the area for a very long time. But the first thing you should get, even if you have to save up for it, is the Fist of Fury for Nikita. It is in a secret shop, you have to walk through the left wall of one of the shops in the first district. With this weapon, she will immediately become an unstoppable killing machine, dealing out at least 3 hits per turn. Don't forget, when buying these expensive items, to take Cheche along, even if it's a pain. (To quickly rehire a mercenary you've already hired, either go back to where you found them or buy a Summon Tavern at an item shop.) Buy any other equipment depending on who needs it, but do remember that you'll have a lot of quests around the area, so keep coming back and upgrading as you go. Your next task is to help the town of Resolute. A lady at the inn in the first Gloucester district is waiting for her husband to come back from Resolute, and mentions in passing that she just happens to have the second seal. She gives you a letter to bring to her husband in Resolute. Resolute is in a very strange state - no one seems to know what gender they are. Be sure to talk to the person at the inn (who is actually the husband of the woman in Gloucester whose gender is being constantly changed). He may give you the Fumon Statue - if not, stay at the inn and talk to him/her again. Climb the tower at the back of town - don't miss the Graffi Seed in the tower. In here, you will meet enemies only when the spotlights catch you or he black spots light up under your feet. At the top, you'll meet Terra Foy the boss. He has group attacks - if you have Nikita, her Bottle spell will help with healing. Beat him and set the Fumon Statue on the pedestal behind him to rectify Resolute's problem. Return to the lady at the Gloucester inn. She and her husband are reunited and she gives you the Second Seal. Treasures in Kaibal Tower - 2000G, Spirit Hat, Tunic, Hard Robe, Short Boots, Fur Coat, Holy Rod, Triple Arrow, High Bottle, Graffi Seed Remember the Graffi Seed I told you to get in the tower? You need to take it to the closed tavern in Gloucester's tavern district. The lady in the tavern will ask you to use the seed on an injured soldier she is caring for, and the soldier will recover enough to ask you to save the town of Cameron from Gilray Zork. Remember that name? Myra's nemesis! Cue dramatic music sting! The soldier gives you his Transit Pass, allowing you access to Cameron, and dies. South of Gloucester, out the gate in the Tavern district, is the town of Cameron. The town has a huge fissure in it, and earthquakes are happening constantly. The townspeople tell you that Gilray Zork, Myra's nemesis, is the one causing the quakes from deep within the fissure. Head down there. Eventually you will find the machine that's causing the quakes, and battle it as a boss. It's not too tough, but be aware that spells don't really do much against it. You will find a rare Medicine Refill, a one-time instant refill for a bottle, but do NOT use it or you will feel stupid. Just inside the machine is a medicine tank, and you can fill up there for free and save your Medicine Refill. Enter the machine to continue, and head right immediately (it looks like you can't, but you can) to find a medicine machine. Climb up the machine and take on Gilray Zork! Upon defeating him, Myra realizes that, even though she has accomplished her goal, she feels hollow and empty. She leaves the party. Take the Third Seal and leave, and Cameron is saved! (If you don't have Myra, you will of course not see her dialogue, and you will not be able to hire her again.) Treasures in the Big Crack - Spirit Orb, Slimy Sweat, Iron Clogs, Purpbird Feather, Heavy Sword, Dragon Horn, Light Card, Air Card, Gold Card The crack in the ground has closed up, allowing you to walk northwest of Cameron. From here, you can go north into the next district of Nigel, a residential area called Lejune. One thing to do in Lejune now: talk to everyone including the kid in a house who just returned home. The guy at the front of the long line for Abel's Bread will give you his place if you then tell him that his son is home. Take the bread to the grandma who wants to taste it. She'll give you an Idol. Just hang on to it. Also, buy a Commuter Pass from the transit station. Buy only one: it is a one-time expense, and once you have it, you can ride to any part of Nigel as many times as you want. The stops are in Nigel Castle, Hammond Hill, Tranquil Hill, Lejune, Gloucester, and the Slums. You also have the choice of whom to hire to replace Myra. You have so many choices! Whoever you choose, stick with your choice so they can gain a lot of levels and spirits, you'll need them! To the west of Lejune, you will find both Tranquil Hill and Hammond Hill. Tranquil Hill is home to the orders of the White Cross and Black Cross, competing religions. Hammond Hill is home to the very rich and huge mansions. All of these places are worth exploring, and doing so will open up a bunch of new quests for you. You can do these in various orders, but here's my recommendation: To the south (past and to the west of Cameron) lies the Earth Temple, where Farus can learn to use the Earth Spirit. Search the panels to lower the water in the temple, like you had to do in Paladin's Quest in the temple near Roki. Battle the Earth Spirit (Kekan and Lelan are both effective), and Farus will gain one more spirit! Three to go. Treasures in the Earth Temple - Earth Card, Spirit Orb, Flight Door Head out the North gate of Lejune and head north into the woods to reach the Giant Tree. The tree is most confusing dungeon you've yet visited - if you want to explore all of it, take note of where the little internal paths go up just one ramp and where they ascend two. One ramp means it is taking you to treasure, two means you're going to the next floor. Climb to the top, beat the boss, and take the Fourth Seal! Be sure to explore it thoroughly and grab the Trumpet as well, if you want to complete the pointless instruments sidequest. Treasures in the Giant Tree: Lance, Iron Helmet, Unique Shovel, Middle Boots, 4000G, Big Slasher, Thunder Cane, High Bottle, Trumpet, Red Hot Cane, Indigo Whip, Spirit Robe, Middle Boots, Earth Card In Hammond Hill, find the mansion that houses the art collector. Talk to everyone in the house and you will earn the Reverse Belt and lots of information on various items. It is all important, and you'll need to follow the chain to gain the Sixth Seal. At the top of that mansion, you'll meet the wealthy lady who collects so much art. She is too fat to move, and tells you that you're welcome to the Sixth Seal, but she is laying on it and can't move. Shoot! Let's get started... The one modest building in Hammond Hill houses the sewer. Going down there doesn't sound pleasant, but you'll have to... talk to the kid, and he'll give you the Eternal Ring in exchange for the Reverse Belt. Continue down the Sewer, and at the bottom, defeat the boss and take the Fifth Seal behind him. Treasures in the Sewer: 5000G, Battle Jacket, Great Sword, Heavy Shield, Violin, Gubo Milk, High Bottle Hammond Hill also has a mansion that belongs to Jubal, the man you met in the Slums. His wife will beg you to ask him to return home. Return to the Slums and do so, and he'll tell you he can't. Back at Jubal's house, his son will give you a letter for Jubal. Bring it to Jubal, and go back to the mansion in Hammond Hill. Jubal's daughter will now give you a bloody handkerchief which she used to curse her dad. Bring THAT to Jubal in the Slums, and he will finally return home. Revealing that he has been cursed by Granada for knowing too much about the Great Union, Jubal will beg Farus and crew to kill him as he morphs into a monster. Do so, and Jubal's wife will award you a Life Corsage! This whole Jubal thing is optional, but a Life Corsage is a nice reward - Using it in battle heals the whole party somewhat, and it can be used over and over. There is a haunted mansion in the northwest corner of Hammond Hill which will be of great help to you. Eight ghosts watch over eight treasure chests, but they will move aside if you have the seal they're looking for. So, come back as you get more seals to get more treasure. Treasure in the Haunted House: 1st seal - Tsunami Sword 2nd seal - Ancient Relic 3rd seal - Sage Robe 4th seal - Fist of Anger 5th seal - Sage Cane 6th seal - Thunder Saber 7th seal - Fist of Fury 8th seal - Sage Ring Take that Eternal Ring you got in the sewer to the woman in Lejune who is beating her husband. (It's funny if it's the woman beating the man.) She'll stop trying to kill him and give you the cane she was whipping him with. Take the cane to the old man at the library, who will get you a book. Take the book to the foxy teacher in the school, who will give you a key. Take the key to the burglar in a Lejune House, and he will give you Culon's Belt. Take THAT to the fat woman in Hammond Hill, and she will float off the bed allowing you to finally take the Sixth Seal. South of Lejune lies Dargo the Bug's House, where you can pay 1000G for a chance to play a silly minigame and grab House Eggs. Play it until you have at least 10 but preferably 41 or more, and take them back to the house builder. He'll built you a big house right inside the south gate of Lejune (for free!), believe it or not. Keep coming back and see who shows up at the house... Tranquil Hill holds two churches. You can't get into the spooky Black Cross church, but the White Cross folks are friendlier. The bishop will challenge you to a friendly duel, and if you win the White Cross will support you. (Also take the chests in the church - Tempest Cane, Spirit Hat, and Wind Ring.) Head out the back of the church to the temple of Duran Duran (really? Duran Duran?) and SAVE before you go in. This is the first place in the game where you cannot save. Also equip Farus with the Tsunami Sword (you should have it from the Haunted House). You'll be fighting with Farus alone. Inside Duran Duran Temple, you be in a maze reminiscent of (but not the same as) the Doth's crystal maze in Paladin's Quest. You have to make your way to the center, battling any Black Cross baddies you run into. Try to avoid them, but you can manage a few fights. Just be aware that you cannot heal out of battle, so keep your HP up. At the center of the maze, grab the Seventh Seal. Petro will be waiting for you when you return with the seven seals. He will reveal that there is an Eighth Seal and send you back to Andel, where the Eighth Seal is. Andel is in bad shape. You are in the ruins of the town of Gwanji, which is apparently the only safe place left. The rest of Andel is sinking into the lava. A cave at the back of town leads to a lava tunnel - explore and defeat the boss at the bottom to gain the Eighth Seal. Lava is rising through the cave, but Petro warps you back to his castle. Treasures in the Lava Cave: Battle Jacket, Warrior Ring, Fire Card, 7500G, Earth Card, Ancient Relic What's this? Petro isn't here... You'll have to talk to the lady in the castle, who will give you a key and tell you that Petro wants you to activate the ancient machine. Wasn't that the whole PROBLEM in the first game? Before you head into the machine (in the back of Nigel Castle), go back to the Haunted House in Hammond Hill and take the last few chests. The ghost on the first floor will also let you pass, but there's nothing behind him. Is there any reason to move him? Head into the Ancient Machine. Explore and beat the bosses at the end. Their questions are of the "but thou must" variety, so it doesn't matter what you answer. They take the Seals and Petro away. Activate the machine, defeat the security system, and you will end up just west of the Nigel near a desert oasis. Treasures in the Ancient Machine: Heavy Armor, Life Corsage, Earth Card, Bass ------------------------PART 3: THE DESERT AND THE SEA------------------------- The town at the oasis is San Fero. Here you will meet the first mercenaries you've seen for quite some time, Gan and Lovie. They will only join you together. I recommend them, but you may like who you have just fine. Both the Sky Temple and the Castle of Illusion have lots of enemies that drop Sky magic, so Lovie's Gubo spell will quickly get stronger. There are four places you need to go soon. The Sky Temple is south of San Fero. The town of El Gemini is west across the desert. The port of Sergio is north of El Gemini. The Castle of Illusion, which Petro told you to visit, floats above the desert between San Fero and El Gemini. However, El Gemini is the only place you can go now because cracks in the earth block the road to the Sky Temple and Sergio. El Gemini is your next stop. You'll see that they are having Geran races, the Geran being a weird snail/goat hybrid with wings. It can jump pretty well, and they say they'll let you borrow one if you win the race. You see where this is going. The race should be pretty easy after a try or two as you get used to handling the Geran. Tap a button twice to dash that direction (and you can change the direction while dashing), but stop the dash before the Geran gets tired. You'll also need to dash to jump over the little crevices. If you don't win the first time, just try again, and when you do win, you'll get a Geran to ride on! There is a new mercenary in El Gemini as well - Rankas the swordsman. Rankas has little magic, but is strong and can use lots of heavy weapons and armor. He is also on a much higher level than your current party, so might be a good hire if you choose. With your Geran, head back to San Fero. You can now hop over the cracks in the ground, just remember to dash first like you did in the race. North of San Fero, you can hop over the crack and get back into the Nigel city, so do that if you want to return there. Your next stop is the Sky Temple, which is south of San Fero. You'll have to hop a crack to get there - when you do, explore the temple and battle the Sky Spirit and Farus will earn Sky Magic plus the ability to use three spirits at once! Keep Sky Magic on Farus so his Gubo spell gets stronger, and remember that the Sky Temple is a great place to earn Sky magic. Treasures in the Sky Temple: Sky Card, Great Mallet, Spirit Orb Head into the desert on your Geran and look for the Castle of Illusion. It flies in a roughly circular pattern - when it comes around, dash and leap into the castle. If you are a completionist, you may want to know that the Speed Ring is available only in this castle as a random drop from Golems, and once you save Midia, you cannot access the castle again. Get it first if you want it! The four transporters lead to four statue-pushing puzzles (some harder than others), solve all four by pushing the statues onto the switches. You'll be glad to know this is the only such puzzle in the game. Talk to Midia to learn more about just what the heck is going on. She tells you to go to Lennus, and that is your next goal. Treasures in the Castle of Illusion: Mega Bottle, Exorcism Staff North of El Gemini you'll find the port town of Sergio. Humorously, a wimpy ship captain just lends you his ship, no silly fetch quest required. First, head to the Sergio tavern and decide if you want to change up your party. Here you'll find Gossam the sailor, who can equip lots of heavy, powerful equipment including tool weapons. You'll also meet Myra again if you took her to meet Gilray Zork - she has learned the Void spirit (though you have no way to improve it now) and will gain stats, especially strength, at a higher rate with levels! Also, she will gain a whole ton of experience points her first battle back with you, and will gain four or five levels all at once. The game's one secret mercenary can be found in Sergio's tavern. Polock, who is a round, orange fish-like being, is sitting at the lower-left table about one in every thirty times you enter the tavern - if you want to find him, enter and leave over and over again until he's there. Polock has very high stats, and gains tons of strength, stamina, and HP with levels. However, he has no spells and can use almost no equipment. Only the Red Ribbon (buy in Gloucester), the Demon Ring (found here in Sergio after the Whale quest), and the Gold Clogs (end of the Gold Corridor in the Mountain of Learning in Lennus). He's the best meat shield you will find with his enormous defense and HP, so you may want him. His attack is good too, and becomes unbelievable when you get him the Golden Clogs much later. One more note on Polock: you can't get him back with Hire or a Summon Tavern. You'll have to return to the Sergio tavern and wait until he shows up again. Keep that in mind, because there will be a while where you be unable to get back to Sergio. There are a lot of good mercenary choices at this point. Gan and Lovie are great, Rankas is a good shield, Myra gains stats very quickly now, and Nikita and Gond are still awfully strong while Karrat or Jenka will have super strong Gubo spells but weak physical strength by now. Up to you. Take the ship into the cave near the town (you can't go anywhere else). This is Jill Island, and is home to the obnoxious raft puzzle - only one path takes you to the boss. That path is to choose left every time the game gives you a choice. Be aware, though, that your raft goes faster and faster and faster and the last choice must be made very quickly! Clear out the boss to open the way to the ocean. Treasures in Jill Island: Drum, Sky Card, Air Card, Bikini As you sail around, be aware that you can sail right across the bits of walking path that looks like stepping stones. Your next stop should be the fish west of Sergio - be sure to visit the two huts inside the fish and talk to the man who left his girlfriend behind in Sergio. He's met someone else, and wants you to tell his old girlfriend in Sergio that he's dead! That's one way to get out of a relationship... Explore the whirlpools in the fish to find the Water Spirit. If there's one spirit you'll miss, this is the one, since no one has told you about it. But it's here in the fish - battle it to earn the Water spirit for Farus. Only one spirit - Void - to go. ALERT: I am fairly sure that you cannot get the Water Spirit once you go to Lennus. GET IT NOW! Treasures in Zorban's Belly: Bomb Bottle, Water Card, Multi Edge Back in Sergio, talk to the girlfriend and she will give you the Demon's Ring - a very powerful item! Polock can equip it, one of his three pieces of equipment, but if you aren't using him it's great for everyone, especially a powerful physical fighter. It gives a big boost in defense and attack. Before heading to the rainbow tower, make sure that you have everything you want (especially equipment) in Eltz. You'll be unable to access Eltz for a while once you get to Lennus. (But later on, you will be able to get back easily.) Sail to the middle of the sea and climb the rainbow tower. Hey, there are finally enemies that leave Void magic! If you have Myra, her Void power will at last begin to increase. Treasures in the Rainbow Tower: Command Suit, Great Shield At the top, you'll be whisked to the planet of Lennus! By the way, while floating through space on the rainbow path, it's not a cutscene. Move around to grab the gold coins and angels, and dodge the saucers and rocks. (If you do run into the saucers and rocks, you'll fight an easy battle.) After a minute or two, you'll land on Lennus. If you've played the first game, you may recognize where you are! --------------------------------PART 4: LENNUS--------------------------------- The town of Reiyold is your first stop - this is Chezni's hometown, and you are in Lennus ten years after the events of the first game. Zaygos has been defeated, Naskuot and Saskuot are at peace, but the four angels of the Great Union are wreaking havoc. Also, Chezni and Midia have disappeared. You met Midia in the Castle of Illusion, but where is Chezni? Is he Petro? If so, why has he changed his name and gone bald? (Petro is indeed Chezni, and as to the other questions, the game is not kind enough to tell you.) Here in Reiyold, you meet Dark and Lucas. See mercenary section for more about them. The sea cave is where you want to go (it is also the only place you can go), so head there. Explore thoroughly, and at the bottom check the control panel to reawaken the flying time machine from the first game! You'll lift out of the ground and be able to fly anywhere in Lennus. Treasures in the Undersea Cave: Preyer Tears, Body Treasures in Holy Ship: Void Card As happens so many times in this great game, you have a big task but can do a lot of little tasks in any order. First, explore Lennus. Lennus has two continents, the northern is Naskuot and the southern Saskuot. Visit the towns, meet and try out the mercenaries, and decide who you want. Ratsurk (eastern Naskuot) has Grant, Lectus, and Joynus. Jurayn is in central Naskuot (look for the black circle) and has Cyril and Jolt. In Saskuot, find Misuto in the west. Flash is hanging out at Zaran's shop. In Karon, you'll meet a scientist building Mechas, robotic mercenaries. When you have some good robot parts, bring them here. And Conshiuto holds Zane. I don't know who to pick... Polock is still your best meat shield, but may not be able to do as much damage as some until you get him the Golden Clogs. Try the various mercenaries and make your choice. I will tell you right now that you do not want Cyril or Grant unless you want a challenge with a very weak character. Jolt is not that great either. However, Lucas has powerful Light magic (Kekan, Kekodon, Gubo); Lectus is great with Air (Lelan, Lelodon, Gubo); Zane has more strength and better equipment and Suzan, Suzodon, and Gubo; Flash casts Gubo and can use the Multi-arrow and Light Bow effectively; Joynus has sky-high wisdom and can cast Suzan, Kekan, and Lelan, making every boss fight far easier. ...And Myra, Nikita, Rankas, Gan, Lovie, Polock, or Gond may still be producing so well that you want to hang onto them. That's fine too. A small, unassuming house in Naskuot should be your first stop. This house is the Void Temple - you'll be in a maze. Chase down the Void Spirit and battle him. This fight can be tough - he has two attacks, one of which does fairly normal damage to everybody, and another which does just enough damage to knock everybody down to double digit HP. Having someone with the Bottle spell would be very helpful here. Beat him to earn the Void Spirit for Farus - and with it the ability to use four spirits at once! Fly to the middle of the Sea Hemisphere and visit the immortals. They want to stop the Great Union too, and ask you to recover the seals from the four angels. They say they can't get you into Belts' aerial castle, but they might have the power to do so if you can defeat the other three angels and bring you their six seals. Let's get to it! You need to infiltrate the lairs of the four angels of the Great Union. Talk to Daphne (find her house in western Naskuot, behind a door leading into a rock wall), and she will help you. Her cave lets you walk from Naskuot to Saskuot, if you ever want to do that for some reason - it was important in the first game, but not so much here. Jurayn. Talk to the mayor in the ruins of the sky temple, and he'll let you go underground. Find the Flame Sphere in the underground temple (it's in the only chest), and take it north to Balmod's castle. You'll want someone with Fire magic, preferably, like Zane, Myra, or Joynus. Find and wipe out Balmod, which shouldn't be too hard. He's weak against Fire, if that helps. Take the two seals from behind him. By the way, if you are using Gossam, Jolt, or Zane, you may want to fight random Fighting Trees in this castle - they may drop a Cosmic Helmet, the best helmet for those three! By the way, the best place by far to earn experience points in this game is Jurayn's underground temple. Why? Those enemies are certainly not as tough as those in the Throne of Immortals or Aerial Fortress or Spaceship. However, they give the most experience. Use this place for levels, and it is also useful for building Void magic which Farus and most of the Lennus mercenaries need. Treasures in Balmod's Castle: Sage Mask, Giga Bracer You can defeat Balmod, Bejould, and Boozoo in any order you please, and while Balmod is the easiest, you may want to reverse the order of my walkthrough by going to Boozoo before Bejould. Boozoo is a much tougher boss fight, but Bejould lies behind a long maze filled with random battles so she is more difficult to reach. Your choice... Bejould resides in Saskout, behind the cave southeast of Misuto. She is weak to Light magic (Joynus is good with Light). Beyond the cave is a maze-like nest, which is confusing - and Bejould isn't at the end of a path, but in the middle. (To get into the nest, you need to enter the password you learned in Misuto - AAAXY on your controller.) Find her and defeat her to earn two more seals! Treasures in Bejould's Cave: Void Card Treasures in Bejould's Nest: Mage Ring, Mech Energy, Sky Card, Zaygos Killer, Hell Whip, Earth Card, Arm-X, Bomb Bottle Boozoo, who has the goofiest name, is in the ice field near Conshiuto. Before advancing to his castle, go into the unmarked building in Conshiuto where people are cooking food for Boozoo. Swipe Boozoo's Feast off the table. Boozoo is easy to reach - just walk across the snow to the castle and climb a few simple floors - but the toughest to fight. He's very strong, especially when he morphs from potbelly form to muscular form. He is weak to Air magic (specialty of Lectus), but more importantly be sure you have the Grava spell and just keep using it when he destroys your Grava. Not only is the fight kind of tough, he will fight you a second time after you win. It's not any harder, but you do have to win again. Take his two seals. That's six; head back to the immortals in the Sea Hemisphere. Treasures in Boozoo's Castle: Combat Bottle, Head-77, Budding Sword As you turn over the seals, the immortals are able to break the barrier on Belts' aerial castle... but the Great Union is drawing nearer as they do so, and Eltz looms huge in the sky, casting a shadow over Lennus. Fly into Belts' castle (southeastern Naskuot). This place looks REALLY overwhelming, but is actually not quite as maze-like as it looks. The staircases mostly zigzag across each other. To explore, go up the right side and come back down the left, exploring all the little side passages. (I should add that you will be able to come back in here and explore after defeating Belts.) The big room in the upper right has a medicine machine (helpful!). Continue through and wipe out Belts. He's tough, and essentially the opposite of Boozoo - Belts only has wind-based magic attacks. Lelowall and Spela will help, and Kekan hurts him. The bald guys from the island take Petro with them. Go past where Belts was and grab the last two seals. Treasures in the Aerial Fortress: Mesh Tights, Great Armor, Sage Robe, Preyer Tears, Troubled Armor, Arm-XX Thankfully, the Great Union was somewhat averted - Eltz and Lennus did collide, but no one seems to have died. Now the western half of the world is Lennus and the eastern half is Eltz - and you can fly around both freely. Your next stop is an optional dungeon called the Mountain of Learning. Here it is, the Mountain of Learning. You can actually head in here as soon as you get the flying machine, but the bosses that guard the good equipment are so tough that you'll probably want to wait. But do feel free to sneak in if you want to attempt one of the paths. Before even thinking about going in, make sure at least one person in your party has Spela. A magician like Joynus with powerful Suzan, Kekan, and/or Lelan spells will be very helpful too. The mountain of Learning is tough - it has eight long paths (though there are no branches on them), each culminating in a boss fight against a monster called Guardian. Each path is themed to one of the eight spirits, and little ghosts of that spirit will fight you throughout the path. The other enemies are also tough, but the spirits are your biggest concern - if you hit one with a weapon, it will split. You'll want to kill them with Suzan, Lelan, and/or Kekan. If the spirits run away, they will follow you and join in the next fight. If you get five in one fight, they will join and form a very tough enemy called Combiner, who is essentially the same as the Guardian boss which is to say very tough. One more note on Combiner before I tell you how to beat Combiner and Guardian: I have heard that Combiner may drop the rare Gomutai. You may want to fight them on purpose for that reason once you are strong enough. Guardian and Combiner are very tough enemies. Each can blast you with two big spells per turn, usually each one causing 1000+ points of damage to everyone. (Guardian will cast two spells every turn; Combiner may go easy on you by changing colors in place of casting a spell.) You will be wiped out quickly if you don't have the right strategy. Number one, make SURE you have at least one person with the Spela spell and cast it every turn. Any of Guardian's spells will wipe out the Spela in one shot, but it will spare you one spell per turn. Other magic you may want: Barrier to reduce magic damage, AttackUp to increase attack, and Bottle for healing everyone at once. Once Guardian starts trying to absorb your HP, you're home free. It means his HP are getting low, and it is also a much weaker attack than his others. Treasures in the Corridor of Fire: Flight Door, Gubo Milk, Fire Card, Death Slasher (after boss) Treasures in the Corridor of Light: Home Door, Arm-XX, Light Card, Light Bow (after boss) Treasures in the Corridor of Air: Flight Door, Air Card, Tempest Cane, Thunder Wave (after boss) Treasures in the Corridor of Gold: Ancient Relic, Preyer Tears, Gold Card, Gold Clogs (after boss) Treasures in the Corridor of Earth: Earth Card, Dragon Horn, Earth Card, Scissor-hands (after boss) Treasures in the Corridor of Sky: Sky Card, Purpbird Feather, Power Wrist, Phantom Lance (after boss) Treasures in the Corridor of Water: Water Card, Slimy Sweat, Death Bringer and Death Bottle (after boss) Treasures in the Corridor of Void: Void Card, Void Card, Preyer Tears, Needle Shield (after boss) Are you ready? Equip your party with the great stuff you found in the Mountain of Learning, and head to Nigel Castle. There, head down the staircase by the robot. You want to place all eight seals in their places, and you'll be given access to the Throne of Immortals. Climbing up the throne might take a few tries, especially if you want to find all the chests. There are eleven floors, with various ways to get up and down. Look for the Power Shield, the Fist of Rage for Dark or Nikita, and the robot who sells you equipment - he'll sell you Gomutai Boots, Helmet, Shield, Armor, and Blade. It costs an awful lot, but is very powerful if you have the cash. Farus and RichJr are the only ones who can equip the Gomutai equipment. RichJr, by the way, can be found near the entrance of the Throne of Immortals. Treasures in Throne of Immortals: Fist of Rage, Bloody Whip, Power Shield, Knife Boots, Body GR, Full Moon Helmet Once you reach the top floor, don't miss the medicine machine. Head outside to the top of the Throne of Immortals (you may recall it from the first game). You'll battle Granada twice, and he will flee to his spaceship. Walk up the rainbow path and head into the ship. You may want to pick up the Giga Bottle inside. You can leave the ship at any time, but once you enter the door to Granada's room, you cannot go back (and you cannot save either), so save before entering his door. (If you don't know which door it is, save just in case!) Soon you will reach Granada's room. Treasures in Granada's spaceship: Giga Bottle, Head-99, Medicine Refill, Summon Tavern In the final battle, you have four enemies - Granada's face is the main one, but he has three big weapons stacked on top of it. Wall and Barrier are good ideas, and having the Bottle spell is not a bad idea either. Wipe the three weapons out first with physical attacks, and the battle will get easier. The cannon on the left seems to get stronger as the battle goes, and the middle one reduces your attack power. AttackUp and SkillsUp are good ways to counter it. Granada's attack will also get stronger as you wipe out three three structures on top of him, but is never terribly powerful. The difficulty in this fight is not so much getting wiped out quickly, but lasting for a long time. Every part of Granada's final boss form has a ton of HP, so you will have to last a long time. Granada will soon go down and the game is over! Congrats!
