Super Black Bass FAQ Copyright HOT B 1992 Written By Brian P. Sulpher E-mail: briansulpher@hotmail.com Version 2.3 Dates Written: November 27th to December 7th, 2002 I dedicate this to my cousin Robert Herrick. We played this quite a bit, and we never did make the final lake together. I hope we can rehash our old playing days on this game sometime soon, maybe even this Christmas! Also, for Cougar. I miss you, and I hope you are living it up in the afterlife as you did in this world. You will always be in my memories, and you will never be forgotten. Also, In memory of Howler and Koonce. You two never had a good start in your lives, but you had a good time when you spent your time at my house. It was oh so unfortunate that you both had your already tragic lives cut short, but I can only hope that I helped make your life a more enjoyable experience. You too will be missed, but not forgotten. ----------- Version 1.0 ----------- -Submitted guide on December 7th, 2002 ----------- Version 1.5 ----------- -Submitted guide on March 27th, 2003 -Added Northern Pike to the Fish Section -Reformatted FAQ -Spellcheck and grammar corrections ----------- Version 2.0 ----------- -Submitted guide on November 15th, 2003 -Did some reformatting ----------- Version 2.1 ----------- -Submitted guide on April 15th, 2004 -Did some formatting and spelling corrections ----------- Version 2.2 ----------- -Submitted guide on March 11th, 2005 -I added in Honestgamers as a site allowed to use my FAQs ----------- Version 2.3 ----------- -Submitted guide on January 31st, 2006 -I added in Retronintendo as a site allowed to use my FAQs -Altered some format in a few areas ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ----------------------------Table Of Contents------------------------------- ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1) Introduction 2) Controls 3) Fish Fighting Meter 4) Lures 5) Fish 6) Angler Stats 7) Local Amatuer Tournament 8) Amatuer Bass Championship 9) Pro Bass Circuit 10)Super Bass Championship 11)Strategies 12)Final Word ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- -------------------------------Introduction--------------------------------- ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1) Super Black Bass is the story of your triala and tribulations in the Bass Tournaments as you try to make it to the Super Bass Tournament. Starting in your humble Local Amatuer Tournament, you need to qualify for the Amatuer Championship, to the Pro Bass Circuit, and then on to your ultimate goal. Now you are ready to head off to your local lake to start your destined climb to the top of the Bass fishing game! ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---------------------------------Controls----------------------------------- ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) This section will look at the controls for piloting your boat, and for fishing for Bass. o---------------o | Boat Piltoing | o---------------o D-Pad : By pushing LEFT, your boat will turn counter clockwise. By pushing RIGHT, your boat will turn clockwise. Up and DOWN have no effect upon your control. SELECT : No apparent use. START : Pauses/unpauses the game. L Button: This will move the sub-menu selector to the left. R Button: This will move the sub-menu selector to the right. X Button: This will invoke your current selection of your sub-menu. Y Button: Enters water area to fish. B Button: Slowly reverves the boat. A Button: Moves the boat forward. o---------o | Fishing | o---------o D-Pad : Moves your boat LEFT and RIGHT, and it will do the same for your lure in the water. You can also alter your lures trajectory in the air during a cast. SELECT : No apparent use. START : Pauses/unpauses the game. L Button: Holding this will lessen your distance meter for casting. R Button: Holding this will lessen your distance meter for casting. X Button: Calls up Lure Selection. Y Button: Moves you back to BOAT PILOTING mode. B Button: You can go to a bird's eye view so you can put a target for aiming your cast at. It also will lessen your cast's distance with repeated pressing. This will also reel your line in. A Button: Press this once to start cast meter, and then a second time to pick distance. This will also select a lure from the Lure Selection screen. This also reels in the lure. o---------------------o | Additional Controls | o---------------------o A + B Button: When pressed together, your lure will fly right into your boat. This will also cut your line if a fish is on your line or if you are snagged on an object in the water. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- --------------------------Fish Fighting Meter------------------------------- ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) This section will help you to understand the fish fighting meter better so you will not have as much trouble landing your fish. o---------------o | Meter Diagram | o---------------o +LINE---DEPTH----------------------------------------------+ | FISH V(fish fighting strength)| | +-----------------------------------+ | | 045---00 | (Stress On Line) | | | +-----------------------------------+ | | ANGLER ^(your fighting strength)| +----------------------------------------------------------+ o------o | Line | o------o This stat tells you how far the fish is from your boat. o-------o | Depth | o-------o This stat tells you how far below the surface the fish you are fighting is located. o------o | Fish | o------o The arrow is the fighting strength of your opposition. The farther to the right it is, the more powerful the pull of the fish against you. As the fish's arrow progresses down the spectrum from blue to red, the pull of the fish becomes weaker. o--------o | Angler | o--------o The arrow is the power of your pull against the fish. The farther to the right it is, the more powerful the pull of you against the fish. As your arrow progresses down the spectrum from blue to red, your pull becomes weaker. o-------------o | Line Stress | o-------------o This bar shows the stress placed on your fishing line from the fish fight. If the bar reached the far right, it wil snap the line, and the fish will get away. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---------------------------------Lures-------------------------------------- ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) This section will review the different colour options for your lures, and the different types of lures. o---------o | Colours | o---------o The colour you choose will assist or undermine your efforts to catch Bass. On a clear, sunny day, choosing a cark lure like BLACK will help the fish to see the lure easiest. On a foggy or black cloud day, going with the brightest colour in your tackle (that is RED) will attract the fish easier. For white cloudy days, choose the PURPLE colour so the fish will see the lures the best with the water visibility being the lowest. o-------------o | Pencil Bait | o-------------o This lure is a topwater plug, and it is a common lure to use. It is best used in large, sweeping motions. o---------o | Torpedo | o---------o This topwater plug really kicks up the surface of the water, which makes it appear to be a partially injured organism (this makes it good bait). Best used in short, sweeping motions. o-----------o | Jitterbug | o-----------o This topwater plug has wild, erratic movements with it's tail, so use that to attract active fish near the surface. Use it in very small, sweeping motions. o------o | Frog | o------o This piece is best used in short reeling motions as it floats across the surface. Excellent for attracting the active bass near the surface of the water. o-----------o | Crankbait | o-----------o This sinking lure will go to the bottom, and when you reel in, it will rise from the depths. This is an excellent lure to use to attract the "mudders" off of the bottom of the lakes. o-------o | Spoon | o-------o This lure floats until you rell in, which is when it starts to dive under the water. An excellent lure to use to draw fish off the botoom, and for fish in twnety feet or deeper water. o--------------o | Furry Sinker | o--------------o These little babies will sink until being reeled in (causes them to rise). Excellent for deeper fish, and for "mudders" on the lake bottom. o--------------o | Plastic Worm | o--------------o Not really meant for attracting bass, this sinking lure will rise as reeled. Best used to fish for fun for the non game fish like Rainbow Trout, Blue Gill, and Catfish. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- -------------------------------Fish----------------------------------------- ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) This section will list the types of fish that can be caught in the game. o------o | Bass | o------o These are the fish that you need to catch to win the tournaments. They are the hardest fighters amongst all the fish. These fish appear as a green/blue mix of colour. They o-----------o | Blue Gill | o-----------o These appear as rather large, or rather small in the water. They have blue, yellow, and green in their colouring. These fish are very small, and if you see one, you should bring your line in before they get hooked my mistake. o---------------o | Rainbow Trout | o---------------o These appear as fairly large, but they tend to stop growing past 10 pounds. They appear with a pinkish tinge. Usually found on the lake bottom as opposed to patrolling. Avoid catching them as they fight fairly well, wasting your valuable fishing time for Bass. o---------o | Catfish | o---------o These are found in deeper water, or when the skies become filled with lightning. They are the second best fighters in the game, and they appear as a light blue colour. Really try to avoid them as they are ferocious fighters. o---------------o | Northern Pike | o---------------o A rare fish to find in this game, these tough guys will put up a good fight. They tend to be smaller, but if you hook a big one... look out! They have a definite red tinge to their colouring, so you may mistake them for a Rainbow Trout before landing them. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---------------------------Angler Stats------------------------------------- ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6) This section will look at how each level is decided, and what each stat means. o-----------o | Technique | o-----------o This stat will allow you to hook fish easier, make it tougher for the fish to get off your line, and it will also make reeling in during their odd fighting techniques a little easier. The higher the rating, the better. o----------o | Strength | o----------o The higher your rating, the easier it is to bring the fish in. This also allows you to move the fish easier when it is resisting at a higher level on the fish fighting meter. o--------------o | How It Works | o--------------o To level up one level, you need to catch one bass. The next level requires two bass. The next requires three bass. This method of progression remains constant through out the entire game. As you go up in level, you will gain a new stat about once every two levels. This means you should catch as many bass as you can through out the day of your tournament, so you will gain in stats, which will make the heavier fish of the more advanced lakes easier to catch. This means that you should go after any Bass you find once you have found five good sized Bass to cover your weigh-in. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ----------------------Local Amatuer Tournament------------------------------ ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7) This is the lake that you begin your career on, Your goal is to finish in the top three places to qualify for the next level of competition. o---------------o | Skywater Lake | o---------------o +-----------------------+ |Key | | | |X - These are the largest Bass in the lake, so bait the "mudders" to rise off the bottom, and bring your lure to the surface so you can see if it is a Bass. If it is not a Bass, then use the A + B Button combo to get the lure away from them. b) Only catch Bass so you can get the best Bass, and this will also raise your Angler Stats quicker. c) Fish in the shallow waters in the early mornings, and once 12:00 rolls around, switch to the deeper waters. d) When fishing near the weeds, use a topwater plug to avoid getting snagged in the weeds. If you do get snagged, carefully try to reel one way, stop, reel another way, and then stop before switching to the other direction. If you do this, you are much less likely to lose your lure. e) If a fish begins to rapidly surface over and over (not juping though), and if it also wiggles from side to side under water, you need to hope that the fish does not get off the hook. You can also try to reel them in if they are close to the boat while they do this. f) When you are fighting a fish (especially the larger bass in the 15 to 30 pound range), you must be patient. Only reel in when their arrow is low on the fish fighting meter, and do not do anything when their arrow is high (or if the fish is jumping). Take your time, and start to reel in as their arrow fades toward the red end of the spectrum (this indicates they are getting exhausted). g) Casting into the Spawning Pool on the last lake is not allowed, and it will result in loss of your lure. h) You need to catch at least three or maybe even four of the largest fish available on a lake to assure a highe enough placement to advance to the next lake. Catching five will seal the deal, and make your adavancement a sure thing. i) When you enter any area that has a hgh potential for Bass, try your best to slowly go along said area to allow your fish finder to scan effectively. If a large fish pops up on it, then you should go in to find said fish, and upon catching it, move one step forward towards success. j) When your time on the day reaches the 3:30 P.M., it is time to head back to the docks to weigh-in. This will not only allow you to not incur any penalties, but you will not need to worry about getting across the large lake if you stay away too long. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- -------------------------------Final Word----------------------------------- ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 12)As is the usual, this walkthrough is copyright property of Brian P. A surprisingly fun fishing game that is not easy, nor too hard. The real strength of this title is the excellent fish fighting system that is instilled at the start, and is elevated by the levelling of the player's character. If you have the patience, this game can be extremely rewarding!
