Introduction ============================================================================ A. Foreword ----------- Cool Cool Jam is a good game. It was actually released for the Neo-Geo Pocket Color. Another game called Cool Cool Toon is also available to play on Sega's last game system, the Dreamcast. Well, this game's about a boy and a girl entering a world that's 1,000 years after their original world. The humans in that world are not normal, their appearance is what I'm talking about. That world is all about music! Their goal is to form a cool music band in order to return to their original world. The game, as I mentioned, is all about music. Instruments and other musical stuff are the major part of the game. When you're about to play on an instrument, you might need to set your NGPC correctly. Cool Cool Jam is a Japanese game. And since I can't understand and, of course, talk Japanese, it'll be a hard thing to me to understand the entire game's storyline. Anyway, I still have a good idea of what's going on, and I made a step-by-step walkthrough to guide you throughout the whole game. >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> E-Mail: BaDBoY_@go.com MSN Messenger: pink_heat@hotmail.com <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<< ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- B. Updates History ------------------ Version 1.0 | 8/09/2003 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The first edition of the FAQ. ============================================================================ II. Basics ============================================================================ A. Rules -------- One or two use Neo-Geo Pocket Color to perform a solo or duet. One player plays with a tune. Two players take turns performing. Trade off when messages appear. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- B. Controls ----------- Directional Pad Movement. A Accept/CLAP the Beats mini game/Red lights string. B Refuse/Green lights string. Option Menu. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- C. The Menu ----------- The menu has more than a use. You can view your characters, their levels and things, save/load a game save, know the time, etc. To access to it, press Option. The save menu is on the top. There are two places to save on by the way. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- D. CLAP the Beats ----------------- This is a mini game that you can play to gain the attention of the people around you (the ones you can see at the moment you play). It could also continue the story, give you items, and/or level your characters' abilities up. To play, press A. Then, press A whenever a big, red ball (see the picture below, the dots are the O's) be on the centre. If a red colour shines, that means you've done a correct CLAP. __________________________________CCJ_________________________________ ―――――――――――――――――――――――――――――――|――\―/――|―――――――――――――――――――――――――――――― .•.•.•.•.•.•.•.•.•.•.•.•.•.•.•.•.•.•O•O•O•.•O•.•.•.•.•.•O•.•O•.•.•.•.• _______________________________|__/_\__|______________________________ ――――――――――――――――――――――――――――――――――CCJ――――――――――――――――――――――――――――――――― ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- E. Playing on the Violin ------------------------ To play on the Violin, use A and B to play the strings. Watch the two colour symbols move, and when the 7th symbol shines, press A if it's red, or B if it's green. Give the Violin the power by moving the Lever (the joystick). Sometimes you have to press both of them, so be careful not to miss anything. Note: when playing Violin, hold your NGPC on the direction as the following arrow. \ / /| ――― / |______________________ ―/― / The SNK logo should be| ――― \ as shown to the left. | | | \ |―――――――――――――――――――――― |/| \| ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- F. Playing on the Bluesharp --------------------------- The main object in the Bluesharp is the Lever on the centre. Watch the moves of the lights, and decide which side of the three that you should place the Lever in (right, left, and centre). Also, each one of the previous directions has two sides; up and down, so placing the Lever without deciding up or down will not give a use. You must hold up or down (depending on the place of the lit spot), and then press A if the light's red, or B if it's green. Note: there's no need to change the position of your NGPC while playing/watching this instrument, because it's originally correct. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- G. Playing on the Guitar ------------------------ Play strings with A, B buttons. Use the joystick as the pick. Watch the 2 colour symbols move. And when the 8th symbol shines, move the joystick & push A if the symbol is red or B if it's green. To press both, push A & B while moving the joystick. Note: when playing Guitar, hold Neo-Geo Pocket Color upside-down (see this arrow). ____ |The | |SNK | __|logo|__ \ should / \be as / \sho-/ \wn/ \/ ___ \| |\ | \_ /| | \| \ ――― ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- H. Playing on the Saxophone --------------------------- Move joystick up and down & press A, B buttons to play different pitchs. A, B and Up, Down symbols appear on the screen with the music. When the 8th marker shines, push the button or the joystick in the direction of the symbol. You may need to use all three! Playing on the Trumpet ------------------------- The Trumpet has four Pitches. Each has a colour. Use the joypad as the Lever, so that you can give the instrument the needed air. When the last mark shines, press the correct button. The metre on the side shows the current air. Interesting Characters ============================================================================ This section contains quick direction on how to get the members of the band. You can refer to it instead of the walkthrough. Wave: If you choose "boy" from the beginning of the game, you'll play as this character. How to Get: This is the character you play as from the beginning. Midi: If you choose "girl" from the beginning of the game, you'll play as this character. How to Get: This is the character you play as from the beginning. Ranke: Plays the Bass. Is an authority of the folks in Musey Town. How to Get: With you from the beginning. T. Bone: He's a Drummer. He's nothing but skin and bones. Drumming did that to him. How to Get: Go to Fusion and CLAP the Beats correctly in front of each one in the first screen. Stand between the enterance and the plants and T. Bone will appear. Rime: This is the Bluesharp player. How to Get: In day 1, go to Bossa Nova, in the second screen. Go to the corner of the upper right. Win. Chiffon: Plays the Saxophone. She's a first-rate player! But she's capricious. How to Get: This has to be a quest. Do it in order to get this Chiffon. Go to Fusion, go to the screen to the North of the first one. Go to a girl in black, and CLAP the beats successfully then talk to here several times. Go to Rock and search then talk to here (she's in a screen to the left from up). Go to Raggae and she's in the second screen. Talk and play the bass very well. Note: This might need exact timing, so keep going there until you see her. Roud: A great Guitarist. But no one knows where he is. How to Get: I still haven't found this, but he is in the game. I will update the FAQ when I know, or when someone sends me that. Lago: A Trumpet-playing kid. He's born to play the Horn. How to Get: I still haven't found this, but he is in the game. I will update the FAQ when I know, or when someone sends me that. ============================================================================ IV. Walkthrough ============================================================================ Again, I don't know any Japanese. Therefore, there should be some minor/major mistakes. If you can correct anyone of them, please contact me. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- A. The Beginning ---------------- After selecting Joinas, and New Game from the menu, you'll start the game. Wave and Midi are listening to an operator talking about a show in Lazy Lion Club. A question will pop-up, then, asking you whether you're a boy (so you play as Wave), or a girl (so you play as Midi). Then, you should input your name. For the FAQ's sake, choose the English letters and enter "WAVE" as a name for your character (the boy). Choose the fourth option to the right to confirm the name. Then, input the girl's name, "MIDI," also from the English letters. Next, you'll be asked if you want to see some cut-scenes in the Lazy Lion Club. At 12:00, you'll be in Musey Town after the cut-scenes, and the chats. You'll meet a green creature called Ranke. She'll CLAP the Beats, just watch that for the first time. Then you gotta CLAP the Beats, too. Press A whenever a big, red ball be on the centre. If a red colour shines, that means you've done a correct CLAP. You'll then talk to a guy standing nearby. After that, you'll return to Ranke, and talk more. She'll tell you that there is only one way you can return to your original world (which had passed 1,000 years ago) by getting the Jam. And, in order to do that, you must form a band! She'll finally join you. __________________________________________________________________________ ( Congrats! Ranke, the Bass player, joined your band! ) ―――――――――――――――――――――――――――――――――――――――――――――――――――――――――――――――――――――――――― Now go up. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- B. Forming the Band ------------------- You, already, have one character in your band who is, Ranke. There are some more to meet. Once you are there, in Fusion, perform good CLAPs in front of each one on the first screen only, then talk to them. Stand in front of the enterance (near the plants), and, suddenly, T. Bone will appear. After the chat, he'll join you. __________________________________________________________________________ ( Congrats! T. Bone, the Drummer, joined your band! ) ―――――――――――――――――――――――――――――――――――――――――――――――――――――――――――――――――――――――――― So, there are you, Wave, Ranke, and this new T. Bone. Do you see those small plants just near you? Pass them by going right, and then up. Go to the next screen. There's a girl in black standing here. She's called Chiffon. Stand in front of her, but don't talk. If you talk, you can go back one screen, then come again. Once you stand in front of her, press A (or the CLAP). Play once, and then talk. She'll chat with you, then disappears. Now, go left one screen, and up the stairs leading to Rock! Pass the lights (walking between them), and head to the next screen. Here, Chiffon again. Chat with here yet another time, then she'll disappear. Now go right to the previous screen. Here, go down. In this screen, up the stairs leading to the main square of Musey Town. Pass those annoying guys, and head down. Here, head right to Reggae. Go right to the next screen. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- C. Play with the Villagers of Fusion ------------------------------------ Now that you've returned to the first square of Musey Town (where you fell down from up). Go up to return to Fusion. There are a lot of Villagers in Fusion. Here is a map of Fusion so I can say where those are... __________________________ | | | | | | C | G | |B | | | |________|________|________| | | | | |M | C | B | | | | | |________|__|ST|__|________| Each square of the previous map shows a screen in Fusion. The ST means where you start (the enterance). C is the Child. There are two Children. B is the Boy. There are also two Boys. G is the Girl. And M is the Man. Each one has the same session with you, so the next paragraphs can be applied on anyone of them. You must perform a good CLAP in front of each one. You may need to talk to some of them more than once (up to thrice). Tell the one you are about to play with "Yes" when he/she asks you, and then, choose a sound from the two available. You and T. Bone or Ranke will play a session. The instrument is Violin, so get prepared. ____________________________________________________________________________ \Session in Joinas 1/ ――――――――――――――――――― The opponent will start playing. Set your Neo-Geo Pocket Color well, so you can see the session correctly. When she finishes, your turn comes. Always remember, A button is for red lights, and B button is for green ones. The Lever is your d-pad. You'll also play on the Violin. Don't forget when to use the Lever for power. Next is T. Bone's or Ranke's turn. T. Bone will play on his Drum or Ranke will play her E. Bass. Just watch that, and of course, set your NGPC back originally. They're cool! They may only miss one time, but I'm sure most of the times, they get all of the lights correct. After that, the Villager will play again on his/her Violin. If you've chosen the second sound, you'll play again after the Villager. And this finishes the session. ____________________________________________________________________________ If you did well, he/she will give you a prize. If you don't, try again until you win. Well, don't ask me how can you know how to when, because Jazzy Egg (the egg you see while playing on an instrument) will be happy if you have done good, will be dancing if you have done cool, or will be shy and sad if you've done bad. The Villager will give you the prize if you didn't do bad, so there's a good chance. The prize is either 4 pieces of a picture of Drums, or 4 pieces of a picture of a Violin. Even when you win, you still can play again whenever you want. Try to complete both pictures. I've noticed that you can also complete the pictures by playing the CLAP in front of some people (e.g. the skull near the Fusion Store, and the Man in that Store), but, try to get them by playing since it's better. By anyway, once you get those pictures, go to Fusion Store. It's located in the screen which is above the first one. The grey building. There, talk to the seller, then you'll automatically get outside. By the way, the Store has things to sell, so once you can buy, come here. Go down two screens to exit Fusion, and reach the Musey Town square. Go right to Bossa Nova! ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- D. Play with the Villagers of Bossa Nova ---------------------------------------- Always remember that you've not ended the search of Chiffon, since she isn't in your band yet. Anyway, that's not what we should think of now. Bossa Nova is the place of the Bluesharp, their famous instrument. Well, it's a small place actually; it consists of two screens only. On the first one, seek for PYI (coloured pink & green), and CLAP the Beats. There's another PYI in the other screen that you can also CLAP the Beats in front of, and play then. Anyway, choose one of them, and after you do well in the CLAP, go and talk. Agree to play. ____________________________________________________________________________ \Session in Joinas 2/ ――――――――――――――――――― Well, unlike Session 1, this is using the Bluesharp as mentioned above. The controls are not the same. In Session 1, we used the Violin. The only thing that was hard is the power. Here, there's no need to give the instrument the power. Instead, you should change the note according to the place of the lights. The lights come from six places not two. One of them has only six unlit spots. The rest (the five) have seven unlit spots. When the seventh spot shines, press A if it is red, and B if it is green. Change the Lever by moving the stick. In my opinion, this is much easier than the Violin. PYI will start the session. Then you play. Next, Ranke will play on her Wood Bass or T. Bone will play on his Drum. The next turn is PYI's. You may even get another turn depending on the selected sound. And this finishes the session. ____________________________________________________________________________ For winning, you'll get 4 pieces of a picture of a Bluesharp. Try to get a full picture. By the way, you can get some from the Girl in the first screen here. If you are in day 1, go to the second screen. Go to the corner of the upper right. You'll see Rime (coloured blue). Just play on the bluesharp and win. __________________________________________________________________________ ( Congrats! Rime, the Bluesharp player, joined your band! ) ―――――――――――――――――――――――――――――――――――――――――――――――――――――――――――――――――――――――――― Now that's it here; it's time to get to another place. Return to the main square of Musey Town. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- E. Play with the Villagers of Rock ---------------------------------- From the main square of Musey Town, head left. You'll get to Rock. In Rock, I've found four people who you can play with. A map to Rock is needed because the place is big unlike Bossa Nova. __________________________ | | | | | | | G | | | | | |________|________|________| | | | | | | L | S | | H | | ST_ |________|________|________| As in the previous map, each square of the previous map shows a screen in Rock. The ST means where you start (the enterance). S is the Skeleton. G is the Girl. L is the Lady. And H is the man who wears a Hat. Each one has the same session with you, so the next paragraphs can be applied on anyone of them. You must perform a good CLAP in front of each one. You may need to talk to some of them more than once (up to thrice). Tell the Villager "Yes" when he/she asks you, and then, choose a sound from the two available. You and T. Bone or Ranke will play a session. The instrument is Guitar, so get prepared. ____________________________________________________________________________ \Session in Joinas 3/ ――――――――――――――――――― You play on the Guitar in this session. It's hard IMP. But, you have to beat it. Anyway, the session starts, as always, with a quick demonstration from the Villager, then your turn comes. Do well. You press A or B depending on the colour (red or green) while moving the d-pad. Move the d-pad as a circle so you do all the direction including the correct one. Ranke will use her E. Bass on her turn, and T. Bone will use his Drum in this session. Then, as always, the turn is the Villager's. You'll be given another turn after that to finish the session. BTW, don't forget to put your NGPC upside-down while playing/watching the Guitar. ____________________________________________________________________________ I think that the Skeleton doesn't have prizes, because I played with him several times without getting any prize after that. Anyway, it might be my bad performance, because the Guitar took a lot of my time until I mastered it. You'll get 4 pieces of a picture of a Guitar. Complete the picture, then move to the enterance (shown in the map above). Get out of Rock, and from the main square of Musey Town, go down. This is another square that we've passed in, remember? Anyway, go to the right, to Reggae, the place of the Saxophone. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- F. Here You Are, Chiffon ------------------------ Well, first of all, Raggae is as small as Bossa Nova. Only two screens. In the first screen, there's a Man who you can CLAP then play with. In the second screen, there's a Lady. You can also play with her by the same method. You may need to talk to them more than once. Try collecting a full picture of a Saxophone. Also, try doing a good CLAP in front of the other Man/Lady in the second screen to get the rest of the pieces. ____________________________________________________________________________ \Session in Joinas 4/ ――――――――――――――――――― By looking at the title, Chiffon is mentioned, but that's not now, let us play some sessions with the Villagers first. The instrument here is the Saxophone. Some say it's hard, but if you practice, it'll be easy on you. The Villager (Man/Lady) starts with his/her turn. Watch carefully until your turn comes. BTW, don't forget to set the unit correctly. The Sax has four Pitches; red (A button), green (B button), blue (Left button), and orange (Right button). The blue & orange Pitches, if you set the unit correctly, will be look like Up & Down buttons, but they are actually Left & Right. It's not hard, just try not to miss the Pitches. Once your turn finishes, T. Bone's or Ranke's turn comes. As always, T. Bone uses his Drum and Ranke uses her E. Bass. The Villager will take the next turn. You'll take the final (fifth) turn, and will finish the session. This session is really cool! I like it. ____________________________________________________________________________ As you should already know, you'll get 4 pieces of a picture of a Sax by winning. So, try to win more than once. Now. Search for Chiffon standing in one of the corners of the second screen of Raggae. Talk to her (no need for CLAPing the Beats). Select the first choice. Also, select a sound. See Session in Joinas 4 for more info on how to win this session. If you win this session, Chiffon will join your band, eventually. __________________________________________________________________________ ( Congrats! Chiffon, the Sax player, joined your band! ) ―――――――――――――――――――――――――――――――――――――――――――――――――――――――――――――――――――――――――― Now go to the first screen, and from there, get out of Raggae. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- G. Playing with the Villagers of Funk ------------------------------------- We've done good so far. Now, head to Funk (to the left). Funk is really big comparing with Bossa Nova or Raggae. As you enter this place, move to screen 5 (see the map below). There's a green and red creature. Talk. After the talk, you should start your things now. Here's a map for the place for a better understanding. __________________________ |1 |2 |3 | | | | S | | B | C | ST_ |________|________|________| |4 |5 |6 | | | C | | | L | | H | |________|________|________| Each square of the previous map shows a screen in Funk. The ST means where you start (the enterance). C is the Child. There are two Children. B is the Boy. L is the Lady. H is the man who wears a Hat. And S is the Skeleton. The instrument is Trumpet, so get prepared. ____________________________________________________________________________ \Session in Joinas 5/ ――――――――――――――――――― You should understand this quickly, but I'll explain how to use the Trumpet, because some people may begin the game with this session. It's possible; you are the one who decides where to begin, but I use this method. Anyway, I think that this instrument is, well, you can say it's hard. The Villager always start a turn, watch that setting the unit correctly. The previous instrument, the Sax, has four Pitches. The Violin has to be given power. The Trumpet which we're about to use combines both of the styles; 4 Pitches & a Lever. You must give the instrument air by moving the Lever. Also, be careful of the colours of the Pitches to know which button to press. After you finish, T. Bone will use his Drum, or Ranke will use her E. Bass. And finally, the Villager will end the session with a final turn as usual. ____________________________________________________________________________ For winning, you get 4 pieces of a picture of a Trumpet. Complete the picture from collecting the pieces here and there. Now head to the enterance in screen 3 (see the map). Get out of Funk. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- H. The House ------------ From your position, move down to reach the next screen, the House. A map showed be drawn for this place. ____________ ____________ |1 |2 |ST| |3 | |G | | S | | | H | | |________|________|________| |4 |5 |6 | | | | | | | S | B | |________|________|________| ST is the start position or the enterance. H is the man with the Hat. S is the Skeleton. There are two of them here. G is the Girl. And, B is the Boy. Screen 3 & 5 might have two persons who will give you some of the rest pieces. Just play the CLAP. BTW, the people here use Scratch. Don't ask how to play the Scratch, if you can play the Guitar, it'll be really easy. The look of the Scratch is different, but the controls are similar to the Guitar. Try to get the two pictures that left (Bass & Scratch). Refer to the Scratch section in this FAQ to know more about how to use it. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- H. Ending --------- OK, wherever you are in the game, once the time reaches 00:00 (that means 12 a.m.), or you begin day 8, your adventure will end in this town. Wave will say farewell to his band and will leave them. The game will be over. The cast (your band's members) will be viewed, then the credits will. Congratualtions! You've beaten Cool Cool Jam. Try getting all the members, and figure out what I've been missing. ============================================================================ V. Miscellanous ============================================================================ A. Main Menu ------------ The Main Menu consists of the following... O Joinas This is where you start/continue playing the game. O Session Here, you play sessions with other players (with a friend of yours or someone else). You choose the music and the instrument. See the Basics section to know how to play on an instrument. O Museum Here, you just view the instruments and the controls. O Tuning This is the options menu. O Joint This needs some kind of cables or things I really don't know of. But, if you have it/them, do the connection to a Dreamcast with a copy of Cool Cool Toon (yeah, another game in the series), and you can upload to or download from it. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- B. Frequently Asked Questions ----------------------------- Q-01. What can we do with the pictures? A-01. You can buy things from the stores with them. Q-02. Is this game linear or not? A-02. It is not. There isn't really a main goal to do. Just collect as much members for your band as you can within a week from since you have reached this town. Q-03. How can I know how much time is left? A-03. Press the Option button and the menu will be opened. There is a clock above. It shows the time in a 24h style (no a.m. or p.m.). The day is one number left to the clock with some Japanese letters. When it's 7, make sure you get ready to leave. Q-04. I have a question/addition to this FAQ. A-04. You are very welcome to contribute anything. My email's badboy_@go.com. Q-05. Will this be your last update for the FAQ? A-05. I don't think so. ============================================================================ VI. Conclusion ============================================================================ Well, this guide now should be finished. I hope you might get useful things from it. Any contribution will be useful, I think. That's it for now. I would like to thank CJayC for making GameFAQs. By the way, it's been almost a year since my first FAQ has been posted. And this is my 13th FAQ. Thanks for reading and have a look at my other FAQs out there... http://www.gamefaqs.com/features/recognition/24337.html ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- C O P Y R I G H T , 2 0 0 3 ______ ______ ______ | __ | | __ | | ___ \™ | | | | | | | | | | | | | |__| | | |__| | | | | | | __ < | __ | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | |__| | | | | | | |___| | |______| |_| |_| |______/ ______ ______ _ _ | __ | | __ | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | |__| | | | | | \ \ / / | __ < | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | |__| | | |__| | | | |______| |______| |_| Unless Where Noted This unpublished work Copyright 2003 BaDBoY This guide is for private and personal use only.
