I found Top Gear 3000 much more fun than other racing games, such as Top Gear, Super Mario Kart, and F-Zero. In this game, you earn credits to upgrade your car with after you win races, which is one of the many things that make it such a fun game. ******************************************************************************* ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ STORY ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ******************************************************************************* (Taken from the instruction book) It is the year 2962. Five centuries have passed since World War XVII devastated most of the colonized planets of the Milky Way Star System. The Galactic Conglomerate of Unified Planets, controlling the Bureau of Reasonable Entertainment, has maintained an era of calm and peaceful co-existence through the systematic suppression of any radical thought or action that may "stir up" the teeming masses of citizens populating the twelve Star Systems under their jurisdiction. In other words, anything remotely resembling "fun" has been analyzed, sterilized, sanitized, homogenized, pasteurized, desensitized, computerized and commercialized "for your safety." You are bored! And so are a number of outlaw thrill seekers that have too much money and not enough excitement in their lives to keep them occupied. For these radical elements, there is only one cure for the boredom and complacency of life in the 30th century...The Top Gear 3000 Challenge! Once every millennium, the richest, bravest, most skilled drivers risk it all in the ultimate car race. Combining the high tech, sci-fi gadgetry of the 30th Century with the white knuckle, raw nerves action of 20th Century automobile racing, these bandit racers have set up an illegal tournament that will take you hurtling through the planets of the Conglomerate. ******************************************************************************* ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ CHAMPIONSHIP MODE ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ******************************************************************************* This is the main mode. You race 20 cars here. Note that you can only play with one or two players in this mode. After you click on Championship, you get a list that looks like the one below. I included a small description after each one. Options: Set the difficulty to easy, medium, or hard and either leave the music on or turn it off. 1 player full: One player game using the full screen. 1 player split: One player game with you racing on the top and a computer player racing on the bottom. 2 players: Player one races on the top and player two races on the bottom. Password: You get a password after every few races, and this is where you put it in to continue your game. Remember to write down your passwords! Exit: Takes you back to the first screen, where you either choose Championship or VS. Mode. After you select how many players you want, a menu comes up that looks like the one below. I also added a description after each item. Name: You put in your name here. Control: Select which buttons you want to use when you race. The defaults are as follows: Accelerate: X Brake: Y Use Weapon: A Weapon up: R Weapon down: L Change them to whatever you’re comfortable with. If you're wondering what weapon up and down do, you don’t use them until the jump device or others are invented. Then you can switch off between your boosts and your jump device or whatever other weapons you have. Speed: Choose if you want your speed in MPH or KPH. Race: Start racing! ******************************************************************************* ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ WINNING CREDITS AND BONUSES ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ******************************************************************************* After each race, you win credits if you place in the top nine. 10th place qualifies, but doesn’t win any credits. Here’s a list of how many credits you win for each place. 1st place: 100,000 credits 2nd place: 80,000 credits 3rd place: 70,000 credits 4th place: 60,000 credits 5th place: 50,000 credits 6th place: 40,000 credits 7th place: 30,000 credits 8th place: 20,000 credits 9th place: 10,000 credits 10th place: Qualifies, but no credits. You can collect bonuses, though. If you place worse than 10th, you lose and go back to the main menu. So make sure to write down your passwords. You can also get bonus credits after each race. Here are the different bonuses you can win: Bonus A: You get this bonus by using a boost when you cross the finish line on the last lap. This is probably the easiest bonus to get. Credits: 30,000 Bonus B: I’m still not sure how you get this bonus, but I believe I know how many credits it gives you. Credits: 50,000 Bonus C: This is the biggest bonus and hardest to get unless we find out how to get Bonus B. You get this bonus if you don’t run into the back of any cars the whole race. It’s harder to get the further you get into the game. Credits: 70,000 Bonus D: You get this bonus if you don’t crash into any objects during the whole race. This also is harder to get the further you get into the game. Credits: 40,000 Bonus E: You get this bonus if you stay completely on the road the entire race. You'll probably only get this in a couple races in the entire game. Credits: 20,000 ******************************************************************************* ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ITEM DESCRIPTIONS ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ******************************************************************************* After each race, it shows you how many credits you earned, the current standings, a little demo of you flying in your rocket to go to your next race, the descriptions of the next track, and finally brings you to where you can buy better stuff for your car using those hard-earned credits. Next, I’ll show you a list of all the things that you can get. Note that some of them might only be found playing on the hardest level and that you start out with the cheapest of everything. On easy difficulty, no #6 items or the warp device are developed. On medium difficulty, the #6 engine and tires are developed, along with the warp device. Infra-red: 160,000 credits ICU2 517765 56Cd Retina persistence See in the dark ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Once you get to the last system on hard difficulty, you should have your car maxed out because the races start to get really hard. It's best to just buy #4 items until the #6 ones are invented, so you'll have enough credits to buy them. The last things that you buy should be the attractor and infra-red devices, since there isn't very much use for them. ******************************************************************************* ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ GAMEPLAY IN CHAMPIONSHIP MODE ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ******************************************************************************* Here’s some stuff that you’ll encounter when you play this game: Speed arrow: It’s a yellow arrow on the road. If you run over it, it boosts your speed by about 20 MPH. Warp: It looks like a green diamond on the road. When you hit it, it zaps you underground and back up further away in hardly any time. You come back out a yellow diamond on the road. Some are longer than others. Extra boost: It looks like a little round, brown object that you usually get by hitting a jump. Question mark: This is only found on a couple tracks. When you get it, it does something randomly such as give you extra credits, extra boost, or speed your car up temporarily. Bonus credits: They look like orange circles, and you get 4,000 bonus credits for each one that you hit. Sometimes you hit a jump to get them, and sometimes they’re just lying on the road. Others you will need to use your jump device to get. Turnoff: When you come to a turnoff, you either turn left or right. Usually one way’s longer than the other, but they always meet later. The long way usually has bonus credits on it or other good stuff you can get such as gas. On your screen you’ll see a bunch of different things like a speedometer, tachometer, where you are on the track, what lap you’re on, what place you’re in, your racing time, what weapon you have selected, your gas meter, and your armor meter. When your gas gets down into the red part of the meter, it will start to beep to let you know that you’re almost out of gas. If your armor meter is green, it means that your armor is good. When it’s red, it is bad. When you run over blue strips on the track, your armor will become greener. The greener your armor, the less chance that you’ll slow way down to around 25 MPH when you crash with no gas. When you run out of gas, your car slows down. If your armor is real bad and you crash with no gas, your car will slow way down to around 25 MPH. So it’s always good to stop or slow down in the gas zones so you don’t run out. ******************************************************************************* ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ TRACK DESCRIPTIONS ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ******************************************************************************* Below is a list of all of the tracks that you'll encounter on different difficulty levels with a few things about each one. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Difficulty: Easy Track # Also, on the front of the box, it says something about a Hyper Space Race, which I don't know about. It could possibly just be the whole game, or it could be a race that you unlock when you finish first place on the last track on hard difficulty, which I haven't been able to do. If you know anything about the Hyper Space Race, E-mail me and you'll get credit. ******************************************************************************* ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ VS. MODE ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ******************************************************************************* In this mode, you can have up to 4 players with the SNES Multi-Player Adapter. The player with the highest score after eight races wins. Here’s how they score you: 1st place: 10 points 2nd place: 6 points 3rd place: 3 points 4th place: 0 points ******************************************************************************* ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ GAME ENDINGS ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ******************************************************************************* --------------------------------- SPOILERS! ----------------------------------- When you beat the game, it always shows your car going up, inside an alien spaceship. It says different words, depending on the difficulty level. It also shows all of the game credits. ---- Easy ---- Well done... You have completed the greatest race the galaxy has ever seen. However there are many more secrets and tracks yet to be seen. Now try the medium level. ------ Medium ------ Excellent... You are a true master of the most exciting race in the entire galaxy. But just who is on board the aliencraft? Will you find untold wealth or forbidden knowledge? Why not try the hard level to find out. ---- Hard ---- Superb... You are a true champion of the ultimate challenge in the galaxy. As you enter the alien craft you are filled with the sense of awe. You sense a presence...... After that, it shows a picture of an alien. ******************************************************************************* ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ TIPS ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ******************************************************************************* Always save a boost for the last lap. Use it just before you cross the finish line to get that 30,000 credit bonus. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Try to stop or slow down in the gas zones to make sure you don’t run out of gas later in the race. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Try not to use your boosts around sharp corners because you’ll crash most of the time. It’s best to use them on straight-aways. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Save your credits to buy good things for your car. Don’t spend your credits on #2 items that don’t do much to your car. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Try to buy some items at the same time. For example, if you have a really fast engine and no good tires to go with it, you’ll be crashing all the time. So it would be better if you buy your engine and tires at or close to the same time. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Try to avoid running into other cars and objects off the road. The jump device works well for jumping over other cars so you don’t run into them, and better tires work well for staying on the track. You can get more bonus credits from doing those things than you can from placing higher in a race. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Always write down your passwords. You never know when you might have a bad race and lose. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- If you want to start in a certain part of the game, type in the name of the system as the password. It will start you out with a bunch of credits, depending on the difficulty level and system that you choose. ******************************************************************************* ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ FAQs ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ******************************************************************************* Q. Do you lose the race when you run out of gas like in Top Gear? A. No, you just slow down when you run out of gas. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Q. Do you switch gears in this game? A. There are no gears in this game. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Q. Do you pit for gas in this game? A. No, to get more gas, you just run over the red strips on the track. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Q. How do you get Bonus B? A. I don’t know! ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Q. What’s the fastest speed you’ve got? A. The fastest speed that I remember getting up to is 452 MPH. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Q. Where can I get codes for this game? A. Go to codes.ign.com to get codes. I won’t copy them onto this FAQ. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Q. My car slowed down to about 25 MPH and a boost won’t even get me going! What’s going on? A. You had bad armor and you crashed when you were out of gas. The only ways you can speed back up are if you get more gas, if another car runs into the back of you, or if you run over a yellow speed arrow. The more you crash, the worse your armor gets. If you run over blue strips on the road, it will make your armor better. Buying better armor for your car would also help. Try to drive extra careful when you’re out of gas. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Q. I accidentally bought something that I didn’t want! Can I sell it back somehow? A. Yes, just buy whatever you want in the category that you accidentally bought something in and it will sell what you bought by accident and then pay for whatever you just bought. This only works if you do it before you start the next race. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Q. What’s best to upgrade first? A. On easy difficulty, you should buy the #5 items as they are invented because no #6 items are invented. On medium difficulty, it's kind of hard to say, as everybody is different by how many credits they earn every race. You should end up with the best engine and tires at the end, though. On hard difficulty, however, you should buy #4 items until the #6 items are released, so you will be able to afford them. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Q. Which track is the hardest? A. The hardest track, by far, is the last one. Even on easy, it can be really tough. There's very little gas, the track is very long, there are four laps, and the computer players drive really fast. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Q. Aren't there any working ROMs of this game? A. No. This game uses a DSP-4 chip, and there are no working ROMs of it. You can find ROMs of it, but they probably won't work. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Q. What happens when you beat this game? A. See the "Game Endings" section. ******************************************************************************* ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ CREDITS ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ******************************************************************************* RickJ for some gameplay information Jas for the Bonus B info Kemco for making the racing game Me for writing this FAQ You for reading this FAQ ******************************************************************************* ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ LEGAL INFORMATION ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ******************************************************************************* If you see any errors, have any questions, comments, or if you just think that I’m missing something in my FAQ, E-mail me at Kobe_5@hotmail.com and I’ll give you credit for any information that you might have.
