ABOUT THE AUTHOR ======================================================================== 1. INTRODUCTION ======================================================================== Welcome to my FAQ for the SNK-made game "Three Count Bout" for the Neo Geo Arcade and home systems. I made this document because it's the #1 request for the Neo Geo system on the request lists at GameFAQs. While it certainly looks like a wrestling game, 3 Count Bout is more like a dumbed down SNK fighter set in a wrestling atmosphere. Not a true wrestling sim by any means, it's fun for a little over the top fighting now and then. The wrestler selection is limited, and the computer opponents can get VERY cheap, but otherwise this game is a nice little button mashing diversion. Serious SNK collecters need only apply here, since hardcore fighter fans will find the game too simple and wrestling fans will find the arcadey play not to their liking. Hopefully this guide will give you some tips or helpful info about the game, or just give you a nice read if you're interested in the title at all. Enjoy! ======================================================================== 2. CONTROLS ======================================================================== Joystick: Move wrestler in 8 direction A Button: Punch, tap rapidly in grapple for power, perform grapple moves B Button: Kick, perform grapple moves, quick movement with A C Button: Jump, use with A/B for Jump Attack, Down Attack D Button: Taunt, Cover for pin See below for greater descriptions ======================================================================== 3. BASIC GAMEPLAY ======================================================================== While the game controls like a fighting game, it still uses pro wrestling style rules. You and your opponent each have a life bar at the top of the screen, performing strikes and moves on your opponent take energy off of his bar and him performing them on you takes away from yours. The goal is to completely drain your opponent's lifebar then cover him for the 3 Count. -------- MOVEMENT -------- Moving in this game is simple, just use the joystick^_^ Note that you don't have the full ring to move around in, only about half. There are a couple variations on movement: First, pressing the A and B buttons together at the same time will perform a "Quick Movement." Anyone who's played the King of Fighters series will be familiar with this. Basically your wrestler will move quickly in the direction you specify(only towards or away). This is good for getting out of grapples when you wouldn't have a chance to win them(see GRAPPLE sub-section below). Secondly, you can start running by tapping towards or away from your opponent twice. ------- STRIKES ------- Hitting the A(Punch) or B(Kick) button while both your opponent and you are standing will perform a strike. Likewise, when you win a grapple (see the GRAPPLING subsection below) performing A Button manuvers usually results in a flurry attack of strikes. If you hold the joystick in the direction of the opponent and keep tapping the A Button, your wrestler will perform a special attack. These range from Mist in the eyes to grabbing and biting. Some of the attacks are ranged, i.e. your attack hits a certain area, if your opponent is in that area then he gets hit, and some of them are "catch" attacks, you actually have to hit the opponent with the attack for the full effect to take place. Next is the Jumping Attack, by hitting the C Button then the A or B Button right after it, your wrestler will perform his jumping attack. Running attacks are performed by running at your opponent, then hitting the A or B Button. The last style of striking is the dash attack, by hitting Away(<-), Towards(->) then the A Button your wrestler will charge at the opponent and perform a powerful strike. --------- GRAPPLING --------- Aside from trying to hit each other with Strikes, you and your opponent will spend the rest of the time trying to win grapples. A grapple is started automatically when the two wrestlers get very close on screen. Once the grapple is started a large bar that's half blue and half red appears on the screen, along with a couple of "Hit the Button" icons. When you engage in a grapple you want to hit the A button repeatedly as fast as you can. Your(1P) strength is represented by the blue half of the bar, and the computers(or 2P) is the red part of the bar. To win the grapple you must fill up more of the bar with your color than your opponent's. You only have a few seconds to grapple( represented on screen by a small yellow line that moves around the large Grapple bar) before the STOP signal. When the STOP signal pops up, whoever has more of their color in the bar can attempt a manuver. If you don't win the grapple by much, or it's early in a match, then your best bet is to perform the weaker A Button manuvers. When the "Perform Wrestling Manuvers" message pops up, tap the A button and a direction on the Joystick to perform various moves. Hitting A and Left or Right on the Joystick always results in a Hammer Throw. Hitting A and up or down usually results in a flurry of Strikes. If you win the grapple by a large amount(3/4 of the bar or more) then you can try to pull of a more powerful B Button manuver. B Button moves take off the most energy, and include Power Bombs, German Suplexes, DDT's etc. Like the A Button moves, hitting B plus left/right on the Joystick results in the same move(not a Hammer Throw though). If you hit your opponent with a few strikes before you engage in a grapple, you can gain an advantage. The advantage being that you may start with more of your color in the bar at the very beginning of the grapple. This is useful in the later rounds against the computer where winning an even grapple can be straining on the fingers! Likewise, if you're getting pounded by strikes from the opponent, you're better off avoiding a grapple until you can hit back a few times. Lastly, though they're rare you'll sometimes end up in a Back Grapple with the opponent. If the opponent is the one grappling you from behind tap A rapidly to try and reverse the grapple. If you do reverse, or you start out holding the opponent from behind then you can attempt a Back move by hitting A or B repeatedly. --------------- POST/DOWN MOVES --------------- Each wrestler also has a couple different moves they can perform on the opponent when they're down. The first is a hold or stretch move, you can perform this by hitting the B Button when you're near the downed opponent. The longer you can keep the hold on, the more energy you'll drain. If you slap a hold on when the opponent's lifebar is empty they'll give up. The second move is another type of Strike. Hitting the C Button near a downed opponent results in moves like Elbow drops or Sentons, etc. Good for taking that extra little bit of energy off. Finally, there's the Post move. Moves from the post can hit a standing opponent if they're in range, but it's much easier to land them on a downed foe. Move towards one of the corner posts on the top left or right of the screen, then hold the Joystick in the direction of the post to make your wrestler climb up. Once you're on top hit the A or B button jump off an hit your opponent with your Post move. ----------------- WINNING THE MATCH ----------------- You win the match by either Pinning the opponent, making them give up, or by Knock Out(in Street Matches only). To pin the opponent, hit the D Button when you're near them when they're down. Their lifebar has to be completely empty to hold them down for the 3 Count. To get out of a pin attempt, tap the A Button rapidly and jiggle the Joystick left/right quickly. If you have enough energy left you'll kick out before the 3. To make the opponent give up, slap on your Down hold move by hitting the B Button near the fallen foe. If the opponent's lifebar is empty or drains to empty while the hold is on, they'll give up. Finally, in Street Matches you have to K.O the opponent. You do this by(suprise) draining their lifebar to empty, then knocking them down for a 10 Count. If you're knocked down, tap the A Button quickly and jiggle the Joystick left/right to attempt to get back up. You can also make an opponent give up in a Street Match, but you can't pin them. ======================================================================== 4. ARCADE MODE ======================================================================== --------- 1st Round --------- Regular Match Vs. The Gandhara Relatively easy match. You can win Grapples with little trouble unless he nails you with a few strikes before locking up. Watch out for his flying Screw Kick and Fire Ball attacks, he goes for them most of the time. --------- 2nd Round --------- Street Match Vs. Leo Bradlay Don't stay parallel yet far from Bradlay or he'll perform a running attack on you before you know it. Also watch out for his Chain Flurry, he attempts it alot. Wait for him to go into it then perform a Dash or Running attack as it's about to end and he poses. Don't get trapped in a corner or it's chain whip city for you. Grapples aren't too hard to win, be sure to Hammer Throw Bradlay into the cars early on for a quick advantage. --------- 3rd Round --------- Regular Match Vs. The Red Dragon This is where things start getting hard. Grapples are near impossible to win outright, so you NEED to pepper Dragon up with a few strikes before attempting them. You have to be careful not to get nailed youself however. Red Dragon is quick and likes to hit you with his Muta Mist and Flying Heel Kick the most. --------- 4th Round --------- Death Match Vs. Gochack BigBomb DON'T even ATTEMPT to Grapple BigBomb in this match until you've nailed him with a few dash or running strikes. If he grabs a weapon you can even pull off a Flurry attack or two. When you can win a Grapple, Hammer Throw him into or perform a move that will land him in the ropes. Getting hit with any of BB's strikes will knock you down. --------- 5th Round --------- CHALLENGER'S TOURNAMENT 1ST MATCH Regular Match Vs. Terry Rogers It's easier to win Grapples in this match than the last two for some reason, but still pretty hard. Terry likes to trap you near the ropes and hit you with his Palm Flurry over and over and over. So don't get too close to the ropes, and watch out for his Jumping Attack --------- 6th Round --------- Street Match Vs. Blues Hablam Knife, Knife, Knife. That's what Blues is all about, very much like the first Street Match with Leo Bradlay. Stay back until the Knife Flurry is almost over then hit him with a Dash or Running attack during the pose. --------- 7th Round --------- SEMI FINAL MATCH Regular Match Vs. Roy Wilson TOUGH match. Roy uses his Flurry and Dash attacks almost exclusively, so be wary of them. Try to trap him near the ropes and nail him with Flurry attacks, or abuse your Jump Attack as he seems to fall for that alot. Again, you HAVE to wear him down with strikes before attempting a Grapple or you just won't win. --------- 8th Round --------- Death Match Vs. Big Bomberder Just like the first Death Match, Flurry or Jump Attack to gain an advantage then Hammer Throw/Perform a move on Bomber into the ropes. He likes to grab weapons so you can nail him with Flurries and Jumps easily. --------- 9th Round --------- FINAL MATCH Regular Match Vs. Blubber Man Another TOUGH match, B.Man uses every weapon in his arsenal, but mostly his Thunderball(Dash Attack). Watch out for that and use Jump Attacks to keep him off balance, then try to Grapple him after you've landed a few. ---------- 10th Round ---------- SWF CHAMPIONSHIP MATCH Regular Match Vs. Master Barnes The TOUGHEST match, naturally. Don't even think of Grappling until you've laid a few major hits on him, and even then you might not win! Hit and Run for the most part, and only Grapple when you'll have a decent size advantage. ======================================================================== 5. VS. MODE ======================================================================== -------------------- 1 PLAYER vs 2 PLAYER -------------------- Just like arcade mode, only against a human opponent. The 1P icon appears on top of the wrestler photos, and the 2P icon is below. Pick your wrestlers, then choose the type of area you want to wrestle in. TITLE MATCH: The regular ring setting STREET 1: A warehouse room DEATH MATCH: Regular ring but with electrified ropes STREET 2: An alleyway In the Street Matches you can pick up weapons(and even the startled on looker at the bottom of the screen!) by hitting the A Button when you're standing over them. You can also pick up or throw the opponent into the crates in the center of the area. Finally, you can also Hammer Throw the opponent into the cars that line the edges of the area. ----------------- 1P/2P vs COMPUTER ----------------- Team up with a friend to take on a computer controlled tag team. To tag in and out, hold towards your partner and hit the D Button. While you're on the outside of the ring, tap the A Button to regain some health. ======================================================================== 6. NEXT REVISION ======================================================================== Quick update to fix spacing and my E-Mail address ======================================================================== 8. ABOUT THE AUTHOR ======================================================================== This is just one of a few FAQs I've written, all of which are available at GameFAQS. A few my FAQs are on various other websites (usually with proper creditO_o) as well. I hope this or any of the other FAQs I've written help you in some way, or allow you to enjoy a game more than before, or maybe just get a good read out of it. If you have any questions about this game, or any other I've written a FAQ for, feel free to drop me an E-Mail. BUT keep in mind a few things: 1. Please don't ask when the next revision will be out, or if I can send it to you. I don't really have a set schedule for these things, and you can pick up the FAQ(s) at GameFAQs. 2. Please don't ask about something already covered in the FAQ. Usually once a FAQ comes out I'm swamped with E-Mails and skip ones that are covered in the FAQ. If it's really desperate I may answer, but otherwise everything I know is in the FAQ. 3. Don't mail asking for codes, I don't have a Gameshark or keep track of cheat codes or anything. Other than that, I try to answer every single E-Mail I get and am usually pretty good at getting back to people quickly, but sometimes I lose letters in my computer or forget to keep them as new. If I don't answer in a week or so it's safe to say I screwed up somehow^_^ My E-Mail address: ProfRev@cox.net === END ===
