I N T R O D U C T I O N ============================================================================== ______________________________________________________________________________ _____i. The Shining Force Series______________________________________________ The Shining Force series began back in March of 1991 with the Genesis/Mega Drive game, "Shining in the Darkness", and has gone from strength to strength producing a massive following for the 13 games in the series. The games vary in terms of style of play, but are all classics in their own right. Shining Force II was perhaps the finest RPG on Sega's 16-bit flagship, and rightly so. I could talk about these games forever, but rather than doing that here, you could just pop along to my site at http://shining.zophar.net to find out more. ______________________________________________________________________________ ____ii. Storyline_____________________________________________________________ The citizens of Granseal are hard at work. Inside the castle grounds, the centaurs concentrate on jousting and target practice while the spellcasters compare teleportation and healing spells. Granseal isn't at war, but there has been trouble with monsters on the outskirts of the kingdom, and the king has ordered troops to sweep the area and drive the creatures away. All notice the thunderclouds that gather above the castle. Not only is rain unusual for the season, but the storm does not look to be an ordinary one. The storm is a harbinger of coming events - events which will change Granseal and its neighboring kingdoms forever. An ancient evil has broken free, and is spreading over the land of Rune, devastating all that it touches. Is there anyone, or anything, that can stop it? Start the adventure and find out! [Taken from the Shining Force II instruction manual, (c) Sega Enterprises Ltd] ______________________________________________________________________________ ___iii. Gameplay______________________________________________________________ The style of gameplay in Shining Force II is what makes the game so wonderful. Although the graphics and sound are really quite nice (for a 16-bit machine), the game involves a lot of tactical planning, and I love it! There are 4 main play modes in the game: 1. Storyline Mode - all you need do is watch what's happening and press A or C to keep them talking. 2. Wandering Mode - walk around the main map to reach a new town or find items or battles. 3. Town Mode - enter a town to meet new characters, buy new weapons and items etc, and let the story unfold as you talk to the townspeople. 4. Battle Mode - the game switches to a set-size map, where your team and the evil hordes of monsters do battle, in a turn based strategic way. For details of the control method etc, please refer to section 6.iv for the game's instruction manual. ============================================================================== > > 2. In-depth playable character details___________________________________ ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 1. BOWIE Class: SDMN Promotion: HERO Race: Human Weapons: Swords Spells: Egress, Bolt Initial Stats: LV:1 HP:12 MP:8 AT:9 DF:4 AG:4 MV:6 Initial Weapon: Wooden Sword Initial Magic: Egress 1 Bowie is the character you play as and leader of the Shining Force. You can name him what you like, as Bowie is just his default name. He starts out in the game as a rather young looking Swordsman, as the picture on the left shows. However, after promotion to Hero status he looks a lot older. He can use magic, though he only has 2 spells. The only weapons he can use are swords. An unlikely Hero at first, he'll soon prove his true strength if you remember that he needs to fight too, not just stand in the back hoping that he won't be killed. Of course you must protect him - if he dies, the Force retreats (and you lose half your money) - but he can end up very strong if you use him! ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 2. SARAH Class: PRST Promotion: VICR or MMNK Race: Elf Weapons: Rods, Staves and Sticks Spells: Heal, Detox, Blast, Slow Initial Stats: LV:1 HP:11 MP:10 AT:9 DF:5 AG:5 MV:5 Initial Weapon: Wooden Rod Initial Magic: Heal 1 Sarah is one of Bowie's school friends from the town of Granseal. She's a Priest and therefore uses healing spells, with one exception - Blast. Her weapons are not very powerful for attacking, which can lead to her becoming weak, but I recommend that you keep using her as with the Vigor Ball she can have a special promotion to Master Monk. She'll have the same spells as she would have had as a Vicar, but the Master Monk weapons are far more powerful and by making her cast a Heal spell every move she soon gains levels. It's not uncommon to end up with a level 99 Master Monk. You won't believe how strong she can really be until you try her! ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 3. CHESTER Class: KNTE Promotion: PLDN or PGNT Race: Centaur Weapons: Spears and Lances Spells: None Initial Stats: LV:1 HP:11 MP:0 AT:8 DF:5 AG:7 MV:7 Initial Weapon: Wooden Stick Initial Magic: None Chester is one of Bowie's school friends from the town of Granseal. He's a centaur and cannot use any Magic. He is quite strong, and certainly one of the better Knights, he becomes even better when promoted with the Pegasus Wing to Pegasus Knight. As a Paladin he is not quite as useful as having another flier. His weapons for both promotions are the same, consisting mostly of Lances and Spears. It's always a good idea to let him keep his spear when he gets a lance, as the spear has a larger range of attack and can prove to be useful still. While it can be annoying to have to wait to promote him (the Pegasus Wing is in Pacalon, quite a way through the game) it is worth it to see him with wings! ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 4. JAHA Class: WARR Promotion: GLDT or BRN Race: Halfling Weapons: Axes and Swords Spells: None Initial Stats: LV:1 HP:9 MP:0 AT:14 DF:7 AG:4 MV:5 Initial Weapon: Short Axe Initial Magic: None Jaha is one of Bowie's school friends from the town of Granseal. He's a warrior and cannot use any Magic. He is quite strong, and has a fairly good defence. He becomes even better when promoted with the Warrior Pride to Baron. As a Baron he can use swords as well as axes, making him more versatile he will also gain a +1 to his MOV. If he misses a bit of the action he'll soon drop behind. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 5. KAZIN Class: MAGE Promotion: WIZ or SORC Race: Elf Weapons: Rods, Staves and Sticks Spells: Blaze,Muddle,Dispel,Desoul or Dao,Apollo,Neptun,Atlas Initial Stats: LV:1 HP:9 MP:0 AT:14 DF:7 AG:4 MV:5 Initial Weapon: Short Axe Initial Magic: Blaze 1 When you first go to Yeel, Kazin the Mage takes you to see his master, Hawel, but on arrival at his house the Force finds Hawel near death, muttering to himself about the Tower. When his master dies, Kazin decides to join your group to avenge the Hawel's death. His Promotion Item is the Secret Book. It is often hard to decide whether to promote Kazin to Sorcerer or to Wizard, because his Blaze spell is incredible at level 4, but ultimately it is up to you to choose. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 6. SLADE Class: THIF Promotion: NINJ Race: Scaven Weapons: Daggers & Knives, Swords Spells: Katon, Raijin Initial Stats: LV:5 HP:12 MP:0 AT:14 DF:10 AG:10 MV:7 Initial Weapon: Short Knife Initial Magic: None Slade the Thief is the rat who started all the problems with which Rune is now faced. We learn that he always steals from the rich to give to the poor, in the style of the legendary Robin Hood, and when he found the Jewels of Light and Evil he took them with good intent, unaware of the trouble he'd cause. He helps you to escape from Galam Jail after you've been captured and then decides to join in order to attempt to put the wrong things right. While he is not very strong at the start of the game (many people seem to leave him out later on because of this) he can be one of the toughest guys on the Force with a little bit of work. After promotion, he is (in his own words) "Like a shadow of the night: silent and deadly". He learns some very powerful spells and can use an awesome weapon, the Gisarme, capable of cutting a monster in two and killing them in that single blow! Certainly a character to work on! ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7. KIWI Class: TORT Promotion: MNST Race: Green Tortoise Weapons: None Spells: None Initial Stats: LV:7 HP:7 MP:0 AT:18 DF:23 AG:10 MV:5 Initial Weapon: None Initial Magic: None Far cuter before promotion, Kiwi can be found in Old Granseal when the animals have been released from the pet shop. He's all alone and hungry in a little house when you find him, so comfort him and give him a name and he'll join you. His default name is Kiwi. His defence is high because of his protective shell, but he is not very resistant to magic. His HP hardly ever increase, though his defence makes up for this for a while. Though some seem to find that he is good, I usually chuck him out first chance I get. By the end of the game his defence is just about level with that of the other characters and his HP doesn't seem to go much beyond 40, while the others are ranging from 70 to well over 100. His attack isn't much to shout about either, and he can't even use magic. Try using him as bait if you like :) His only saving grace IMHO is that after promotion he can 'fly'. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 8. PETER Class: PHNK Promotion: PHNX Race: Phoenix Weapons: None Spells: None Initial Stats: LV:9 HP:22 MP:0 AT:26 DF:16 AG:12 MV:6 Initial Weapon: None Initial Magic: None Peter is a Phoenix who visits the town of New Granseal, only to be mocked by the inhabitants. He cannot use magic. After speaking with the King he tags along with the Force and is computer controlled until you have travelled to Bedoe and spoken with the God Volcanon. Peter is certainly one of the more powerful characters, easily gaining levels due to his strong attack. He generally gains 2-3 HP per Level and 2 attack points. Despite his odd appearence before promotion, he is unmatched by any of the Force. After promotion to PHNX the land effect does not effect his movement and if he dies he'll revive himself after the battle. Not only this, but it is clear that he builds up a fire resistance, taking only half damage from Blaze etc. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 9. MAY Class: RNGR Promotion: BWNT Race: Centaur Weapons: Arrows and Missiles Spells: None Initial Stats: LV:10 HP:18 MP:0 AT:24 DF:13 AG:14 MV:6 Initial Weapon: Wooden Arrow Initial Magic: None After you've landed on Parmecia and fought the battle at North Cliff, you will be snet out to make allies and trading partners. You'll find yourself in the Town of Ribble, and once the people there realise you're not going to hurt them, they'll all come out of hiding and you'll be free to go around the town. Just south of the church you'll find May the Ranger who is willing to join the Shining Force. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 10. GERHALT Class: WFMN Promotion: WFBN Race: Beastman Weapons: None Spells: None Initial Stats: LV:13 HP:23 MP:0 AT:35 DF:21 AG:21 MV:5 Initial Weapon: None Initial Magic: None Gerhalt is a Beast Man from Polca Village, who joins at the start of a battle in his home town after realising that the townspeople had been deceived. He is quite strong, though if he misses out on a single battle he can soon fall behind. His movement range (5) is what limits his progress, so I recommend that if you plan to use him until the end that you shoud use a Running Pimento on him. After this he'll be a sure-fire permenant member of your team. After he is promoted he becomes a full Wolf, leaving his human form behind forever. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 11. LUKE Class: BDMN Promotion: BDBT Race: Birdman Weapons: Swords Spells: None Initial Stats: LV:14 HP:30 MP:0 AT:26 DF:18 AG:23 MV:6 Initial Weapon: Middle Sword Initial Magic: None You'll meet Luke for the first time when you go to speak with King Bedoe and Volcanon. He's a friend of Peter's. When you return to Polca and get the raft, Luke will leave the town with you and then ask to join. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 12. ROHDE Class: BRGN Promotion: ---- Race: Human Weapons: Arrows and Missiles Spells: None Initial Stats: LV:4 HP:34 MP:0 AT:55 DF:34 AG:23 MV:5 Initial Weapon: Assault Shell Initial Magic: None Dr. Rohde is a historian, living in the town of Hassan (see animation), and only he can halp you get the caravan. But what does a boy like Bowie have that would interest a historian? The Achilles Sword! When you have the Achilles Sword, take it to Rohde and he'll tag along with the Force. Without him you can't progress and fight the Taros. He'll join up as a member of the Force when you clear the rocks at North Cliff. He'll use the Cannon as a weapon and become a Brass Gunner. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 13. RICK Class: KNTE Promotion: PLDN or PGNT Race: Centaur Weapons: Spears and Lances Spells: None Initial Stats: LV:19 HP:34 MP:0 AT:43 DF:28 AG:29 MV:7 Initial Weapon: Power Spear Initial Magic: None Rick the Knight may look young, but when kitted up with a decent weapon, he can kick major Devil butt! When you've fought the Taros and found the Caravan, return to Hassan and you'll meet this unlikely looking soldier, who rushes at you and asks to join with great enthusiasm. The Pegasus Wing is his Promotion Item. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 14. ELRIC Class: ACHR Promotion: SNIP or BRGN Race: Elf Weapons: Arrows and Missiles Spells: None Initial Stats: LV:21 HP:37 MP:0 AT:40 DF:25 AG:25 MV:5 Initial Weapon: Steel Arrow Initial Magic: None On your way to Creed's Mansion, you'll sto by the Elven Town. Here you'll hear that a young elf, Elric is missing. When you reach the passage to Creed's Mansion, Oddler will say he hears someone crying for help, you follow him into a small area where there is a pool. In this pool you'll find Elric, however saving him isn't as easy as you might think, as the pool belongs to the Harpy and she's not gonna let her meal go without a fight! Once you've defeated the monsters, Elric will join up in gratitude. His special promotion item is the Silver Tank. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 15. ERIC Class: KNTE Promotion: PLDN or PGNT Race: Centaur Weapons: Spears and Lances Spells: None Initial Stats: LV:24 HP:53 MP:0 AT:48 DF:29 AG:28 MV:7 Initial Weapon: Steel Lance Initial Magic: None After you've spoken to Creed and Evil Spirit, you can choose one of 4 characters. Eric the Knight is one of these. If you don't pick him, you can recruit him if, after Frayja joins, you go back to Creed's mansion. His Promotion Item is the Pegasus Wing. It has been suggested that Eric is the same Eric as in Sword of Hajya. When you meet him in Desktop Kingdom he tells you how he was on a quest for a magic sword... ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 16. KARNA Class: PRST Promotion: VICR or MMNK Race: Human Weapons: Rods, Staves and Sticks Spells: Heal, Blast, Boost, Aura Initial Stats: LV:24 HP:43 MP:51 AT:40 DF:25 AG:27 MV:5 Initial Weapon: Power Stick Initial Magic: Heal 3, Blast 2, Boost 1 Karna is one of the four characters you can choose from at Creed's Mansion, however if you don't choose her, you can return when you have the Sky Orb to get her and the other 2 your tured down. She's a Priest and therefore uses healing spells, with one exception - Blast. Her weapons are not very powerful for attacking, which can lead to her becoming weak, but I recommend that you keep using her as with the Vigor Ball she can have a special promotion to Master Monk. She'll have the same spells as she would have had as a Vicar, but the Master Monk weapons are far more powerful and by making her cast a Heal or Aura spell every move she soon gains levels. It's not uncommon to end up with a level 99 Master Monk. You won't believe how strong she can really be until you try her! ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 17. RANDOLF Class: WARR Promotion: GLDT or BRN Race: Dwarf Weapons: Axes and Swords Spells: None Initial Stats: LV:24 HP:38 MP:0 AT:52 DF:40 AG:27 MV:5 Initial Weapon: Power Axe Initial Magic: None After you've spoken to Creed and Evil Spirit, you can choose one of 4 characters to aid you in your quest. Randolf the Warrior is one of these, he was also the leader of the people on Floor World. If you don't pick him, you can recruit him if, after you get the Sky Orb, you go back to Creed's mansion. His promotion item is the warrior pride. While Karna is usually considered the best to choose of the four, Randolf should not be underestimated, he is a strong warrior and a valuable asset to your Force. If promoted to Baron he gains +1 to his movement. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 18. TYRIN Class: MAGE Promotion: WIZ or SORC Race: Elf Weapons: Rods, Staves and Sticks Spells: Blaze,Freeze,Sleep,Bolt or Dao,Apollo,Neptun,Atlas Initial Stats: LV:24 HP:29 MP:49 AT:36 DF:25 AG:30 MV:5 Initial Weapon: Power Stick Initial Magic: Blaze 2, Freeze 2 After you've spoken to Creed and Evil Spirit, you can choose one of 4 characters to aid you in your quest. Tyrin the Mage is one of these, he was also the leader of the people on Floor World. If you don't pick him, you can recruit him if, after you get the Sky Orb, you go back to Creed's mansion. His promotion item is the secret book. While Karna is usually considered the best to choose of the four, Tyrin should not be underestimated, he can become a strong spellcaster and a valuable asset to your Force. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 19. JANET Class: ACHR Promotion: SNIP or BRGN Race: Elf Weapons: Arrows and Missiles Spells: None Initial Stats: LV:24 HP:35 MP:0 AT:41 DF:27 AG:29 MV:5 Initial Weapon: Steel Arrow Initial Magic: None When you return to Granseal to get the Dynamite to unblock the tunnel to the north, Janet will see you as you leave. She'll tell you that she knows her love, Elric, is with the Force. Astral at first thinks that she wants to take Elric away, but she asks to join so that she can be with him again and makes a useful addition to the Force. Her special promotion item is the Silver Tank. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 20. HIGINS Class: PLDN Promotion: ---- Race: Centaur Weapons: Spears and Lances Spells: None Initial Stats: LV:7 HP:51 MP:0 AT:57 DF:33 AG:31 MV:7 Initial Weapon: Javelin Initial Magic: None Higins is a Paladin from Pacalon, who left to find help for his city. He ran into trouble with the Greater Devil Geshp and was almost possessed by another gizmo, just like King Granseal and King Galam were. You'll see him when you leave the town of Ketto, shortly after you arrive in North Parmecia. He'll be knocked unconsious and when you complete battle 26, he'll join out of gratitude for your saving his life. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 21. TAYA Class: SORC Promotion: ---- Race: Elf Weapons: Rods, Staves and Sticks Spells: Dao, Apollo, Neptun, Atlas Initial Stats: LV:11 HP:42 MP:57 AT:44 DF:31 AG:41 MV:5 Initial Weapon: Indra Staff Initial Magic: Dao 1 Taya the Sorceress is at Mitula's Shrine. When you've beaten Zalbard and spoken with Goddess Mitula, go through the doorway on the right and you should see a statue. Search it and Taya will be restored to her normal form and will tell you that Mitula wants her to go with you. Despite her great spells, she has a weak defence and unless this is worked on soon she will not last through much of a battle. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 22. SKREECH Class: BDBT Promotion: ---- Race: Birdman Weapons: Swords Spells: None Initial Stats: LV:11 HP:53 MP:0 AT:63 DF:38 AG:38 MV:6 Initial Weapon: Great Sword Initial Magic: None You'll first meet Skreech at Bedoe, when he is just a chick, and it seems you make quite an impression on him there. Once you've spoken with King Bedoe and God Volcanon, make sure you speak to the chick on the ledge outside the 3rd floor. Then, when you are about to leave, wander around the bushes on the left of the screen, stand imbetween two of them and a small bird will fall on you. That's Skreech. His mother will thank you and he'll join later in the game, at the town of Tristan, when you've spoken with Mitula and go to leave the town. Remember, he will only join if you saved his life back at Bedoe. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 23. FRAYJA Class: VICR Promotion: ---- Race: Human Weapons: Rods, Staves and Sticks Spells: Heal, Detox, Aura, Attack Initial Stats: LV:13 HP:53 MP:50 AT:55 DF:33 AG:37 MV:5 Initial Weapon: Indra Staff Initial Magic: Heal 2, Detox 2 Frayja the Vicar is in Pacalon Castle the first time you meet him. He's feeling terribly guilty about something he's done. It turns out that a small town on the north-west coast of Parmecia is the only thing blocking the Devil Army from invading the mainland, and Frayja was the one who had to make the choice to lock it's gate, and it's people inside to prevent a massive loss of life. It was the lesser of two evils, but evil none-the less, and all he can do is feel sorry for his sin. When you return to Pacalon after having been to see Mitula, he'll go with you to Moun, to see if there are any survivors. Once he has opened the gate and you go inside the town he insists on joining the Force and fighting the battle in the town. The last person on your list of fighters will be taken out for this battle and replaced by him for the duration of this battle. This really annoys me, so I usually cast Egress and replace him! ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 24. JARO Class: PGNT Promotion: ---- Race: Winged Centaur Weapons: Spears and Lances Spells: None Initial Stats: LV:12 HP:60 MP:0 AT:66 DF:45 AG:44 MV:7 Initial Weapon: Chrome Lance Initial Magic: None Jaro the Pegasus Knight will join you half way through battle 32, when you are fighting your way to reach the village of Moun. When you first meet him, he is fighting against you, on the side of the devils, but he decides he no longer wishes to work for them, and starts fighting alongside your warriors (although he is controlled by the computer for the duration of this battle). This might cause you to question his loyalty, but do not doubt him, this is a permenant change of heart and with a bit of work he can be a great asset to the legendary Shining Force. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 25. GYAN Class: GLDT Promotion: ---- Race: Dwarf Weapons: Axes Spells: None Initial Stats: LV:14 HP:61 MP:0 AT:72 DF:62 AG:37 MV:5 Initial Weapon: Great Axe Initial Magic: None You'll meet Gyan the Gladiator in Moun, after Frayja has helped you get in and you have fought off the monsters. When you tell him that the tunnel has been cleared and he can return home he decides that his family can wait and that your cause is more important. Although he has a low movement, his defence is excellent and more than makes up for it! ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 26. SHEELA Class: MMNK Promotion: ---- Race: Human Weapons: Gloves and Knuckles Spells: Heal, Blast, Muddle, Boost Initial Stats: LV:14 HP:61 MP:0 AT:72 DF:62 AG:37 MV:5 Initial Weapon: Brass Knuckles Initial Magic: Heal 2, Blast 2, Muddle 2, Boost 1 Sheela is the third Master Monk in the game and can be found near the Monastary/Dojo on Grans. The Monastary is South-west of where the Nazca Ship crash-lands. On the left side of the Monastary are a lot of trees. Find your way through these trees, heading upwards and you'll come to a waterfall, where you'll see he swimming and diving. It turns out that she's one of Sir Astral's old pupils and is training to be a fighting machine rather than becoming a priest, because the Evil Red Baron murdered her fiancé. She agrees to join the force, in the hope that she might be able to avenge the death of her love. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 27. ZYNK Class: RBT Promotion: ---- Race: Ancient Robot Weapons: None Spells: None Initial Stats: LV:16 HP:59 MP:0 AT:79 DF:62 AG:42 MV:4 Initial Weapon: None Initial Magic: None Zynk is a Robot from the past, one of the inventions of the Ancients. He is met in Moun, protecting the townspeople and tags along with the Force once you leave Moun. He flies the Nazca Ship for you and when you go to Roft and Petro dies he'll join. His movement range is a mere 4, so I recommend using either a Running Pimento on him or equipping him with the Running Ring. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 28. CLAUDE Class: GLM Promotion: ---- Race: Golem Weapons: None Spells: None Initial Stats: LV:14 HP:44 MP:0 AT:76 DF:70 AG:38 MV:4 Initial Weapon: None Initial Magic: None Claude is one of the special characters, you need the Arm of Golem from Moun to make him join. Pictures of it's location and his location are linked to in the pictures section of this page. South of Roft there is a small path along the coast, which can be followed. It leads to a series of bridges linking a number of small islands. On one of these there is a cave, go in it and inside of it you'll meet Claude. If you don't have his arm he'll just complain and won't join. In this cave you'll also find a way back to Parmecia. At the bottom you'll see some dark panels on the floor, one on the left opens up a path which leads back to the Magic Tunnel below Ribble. Claude has a good defence but his low movement (4) and agility make him a poor member of the Force, likely to miss most of the action in battle because he can't move with the rest of the group. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 29. Play the piano in the tavern and a doorway will open up inside the church. Much as the Priest tries to force you to go away you succeed in the end and find the townsfolk living in tunnels under Yeel. You'll find Chaz here and he'll offer to join you and your comrades. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 30. He decides that he should take his own life to atone for what he has done, however, Astral will tell you that Lemon is now an immortal vampire and cannot die that easily. You'll find traces of his attempted suicides all over the south of Grans as you go from town to town and you'll eventually find him in Yeel. If you talk to him there, he'll offer to join. You can pass him by here, but he'll meet up with you at the Devil's Head Statue and join there. When he joins you'll get the Dark Sword, which, while cursed, has a useful Desoul spell. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ______________________________________________________________________________ ___iv. NPCs and Devils________________________________________________________ :::::: Non-player Characters :::::: Sir Astral Your teacher from Granseal. A wise old man who longs for adventure and joins you as a friend and advisor as soon as he gets the chance to. King Granseal The King of your home town and father of Elis. He was possessed near the start of the game, but Astral saved him. King Galam King of Galam, a town nearby Granseal. He is possessed later and becomes a follower of Zeon. Princess Elis Daughter of King Granseal, she was kidnapped by Zeon and King Galam. Her father wants you to find her. The Trader The man who works in all of the shops, without him you'd never be able to fight the Powers of Darkness! The Priest You'll find him in just about every church in the game. He'll heal your comrades, save your position in the game and also promote members of the Force. Oddler A young, blind boy who is found in Polca Village after the disturbance at Mount Volcano. He tags along with the force until you meet Creed. There could be more to him than meets the eye... Creed An ex-Greater Devil, Creed is now retired. He's got a collection of miniature people which you'll join for a while. He can contact the Evil Spirit to aid you and also gives you a choice of four people to join the Force. Later in the game he'll act as a priest for you. The Fairy Fairy seems to live with Creed, but is friendly with the Dwarves and elves. You first meet her in disguise in Polca Village, where she says she'll "See you later". Indeed she does, as she'll go with you to help the sick dwarf. Goddess Mitula The Goddess of Rune, she lives in Tristan at "Mitula Shrine" and is keeper of the Ground Orb. She'll help you throughout the game. God Volcanon The apparently cold-hearted God of Rune, he lives at Mt. Volcano, just north of Polca Village. He has a major grudge against the ground-dwelling people of Granseal. :::::: Monsters and Greater Devils :::::: Taros Not so much a Devil as a guardian, he protects the Taros Shrine and all within it. To win the caravan away from him you must defeat him, and only a Hero wielding the Achilles Sword can do that... Zalbard The weakest of the Greater Devil's, you'll fight him at Mitula's Shrine. He's got a powerful Bolt spell, so watch out! Cameela To get to the Nazca Ship you'll have to get past her and her Iron Ball! She's a master of disguise... Red Baron Leader of the Galam Army, and loyal to his King, the Red Baron Lemon became a blood-thirsty vampire under the control of Devils. His armour is red from the blood of those he has killed and he wields the Dark Sword. Geshp The ugly devil shows up all over the place, and is incredibly strong for his small stature. Lord Odd Eye The truth is revealed... and he is 'really rather evil'. Once a promising man, his life is thrown away in a rather tear-jerking moment. King Galam The King of Galam, one of Granseal's old allies. Possessed by the Gizmo which threatened King Granseal he has become one of Zeon's strongest followers. Zeon The King of the Devils himself. His powers are locked inside the Jewel of Evil and he himself is locked away in Arc Valley, but his strength is returning and his sole desire is to rule the world... ============================================================================== > > 3. I T E M S ============================================================================== ______________________________________________________________________________ _____i. Restoring Items_______________________________________________________ Item: Medical Herb Cost: 10G Use: Restores 10HP to the character holding it, or one adjacent to them Use on: Anyone on the fighting Force Location: All item shops, some battles (all skeletons in South Parmecia carry it), searchables Thoughts: At the beginning of the game, ensure all characters have a good supply of this - even healers. Once HPs start reaching the mid 20's to 30's, change over to Healing Seed. Item: Healing Seed Cost: 200G Use: Restores 20HP to the character holding it, or one adjacent them Use on: Anyone on the fighting Force Location: Most items shops, some battles, searchables Thoughts: Just because this is more potent than Medical Herb it does not mean you need to carry less! Neither is it a good idea to buy this at the start of the game just because you can afford it - if your characters don't have over 20HP it's better to use Medical Herb. Keep using this until you get around 40-50HP. Item: Healing Drop Cost: 300G Use: Restores 30HP to the character holding it, or one adjacent to them Use on: Anyone on the fighting Force Location: Most items shops, some battles, searchables Thoughts: This is the stuff you should be using for most of the game. The only thing better is healing water or healing rain, of which there are only a few. Item: Healing Water Cost: 400G Use: Restores full HP to the character holding it, or one adjacent to them Use on: Anyone on the fighting Force Location: The Taros Shrine, Ketto, The Dwarven Town, Galam Treasury Thoughts: Since these are so useful, but there are not very many of them, save them up for emergencies only. Don't just keep them for the last few battles though, or you might never get around to using them. Item: Healing Rain Cost: 10000G Use: Restores full HP to all characters on the fighting Force Use on: Everyone on the Force! Location: Chest at Creed's Mansion, Blue Shaman in Fairy Woods, Final Battle Thoughts: There are only a few of these around, and so make sure that you've got one for the battle against King Galam, and one for Zeon. Item: Antidote Cost: 20G Use: Cures the character holding it (or one adjacent to them) of poison Use on: Anyone on the fighting Force Location: All item shops, some battles, searchables Thoughts: Although a lot of people don't bother carrying this, I'd always ensure that at least 2 of my Force are have some - just in case. Often I find that certain members get poisoned more often than others - these are who I'd give it to. Item: Fairy Powder Cost: 100G Use: Cures the character holding it (or one adjacent to them) of poison, sleep etc. Use on: Anyone on the fighting Force Location: All item shops, some battles, searchables Thoughts: Not an item I use very much at all - it takes up valuable space and is a waste of money as far as I'm concerned. Item: Fairy Tear Cost: 300G Use: Restores 20MP to the character holding it, or one adjacent to them Use on: Magic Users on the fighting Force Location: Deals, some battles, searchables Thoughts: Quite a handy item, but fairly rare, so it's a good idea to save it for in emergencies. Item: Right of Hope (Light of Hope) Cost: 10000G Use: Restores full MP to all characters on the fighting Force Use on: Everyone on the Force! Location: The Japanese Version only. It's in a chest in the Fairy Woods bonus stage, however, the chest is actually invisible (playing with the layers in GeneCyst will not help you find it!). See the screenshot on my website, http://shining.zophar.net/shf2/ for where you need to stand to find it, since it's under the trees. You need to stand facing down, and search (searching in battles only works in the Japanese version of the game). Thoughts: After many years, I've finally had the time to track this one down. Unfortunately, since you can only search in battle in the Japanese version, you can't get this item in the USA and UK versions. ______________________________________________________________________________ ____ii. Boosting Items________________________________________________________ Item: Power Water Cost: 500G Use: Permanent Attack Increase (boosts by up to 5) Use on: Anyone in the Force Location: Chest in lower floor of Holy Sword's Shrine, Ruins south of Ribble, Chest in left room at Mitula's Shrine Thoughts: Not really one to be wasted on magic users (their attacks will never be that good, except for Master Monks of course), you'd be better to use this on Bowie to keep him among the best. Item: Protect Milk Cost: 500G Use: Permanent Defence Increase (boosts by up to 5) Use on: Anyone in the Force Location: Barrel in small house built into the ground at Polca Village, a Chest in the caverns in Tristan Thoughts: This one is more the thing you should use on a magic user - after all, you want them to survive long enough to get in and cast some spells, don't you? Item: Quick Chicken Cost: 500G Use: Permanent Agility Increase (boosts by up to 5) Use on: Anyone in the Force Location: On the boat in Granseal, the second visit to Yeel Thoughts: Use this on a character who never seems to get to move soon enough in a battle. Item: Bright Honey Cost: 500G Use: Permanent MP Increase (boosts by up to 5) Use on: Magic Users only Location: Vase in house in south-west Ribble, a barrel in Ketto Thoughts: Just use this one on your favourite Magic User, or if Slade already has magic, use it on him (or his MP won't get as high as you want them too). Item: Cheerful Bread Cost: 500G Use: Permanent HP Increase (boosts by up to 5) Use on: Magic Users only Location: Castle in New Granseal, Vase in Pacalon Thoughts: Probably best used on someone who has a low defence as well as low HP. Item: Running Pimento Cost: 500G Use: Permanent MOV Increase of 2 Use on: Anyone in the Force who has been promoted already Location: Barrel in a pub at Hassan, Underground in Moun Thoughts: I always use this one on either Sarah or Karna after they've been promoted. This'll make them even better fighting machines. Don't forget that if you use it before promotion, the effect will be lost afterwards. Item: Brave Apple Cost: 500G Use: Character goes up 1 Level Use on: Anyone in the Force Location: Secret Passage to Creed's, The Monastery where Sheela is found Thoughts: This is a great item, as the character it is used on will have all the usual stat increases of a normal Level-up. Great if you want to promote someone, but they're not quite there yet, or if you want them to learn a spell ASAP. ______________________________________________________________________________ ___iii. Rings and Accessories_________________________________________________ Item: Quick Ring Cost: 3000G Use: Equip for AGI +5 Use on: Anyone in the Force Location: The vase next to the bird on the 2nd floor in Bedoe, Who says 'We need a lot of hot water...' Thoughts: Give this to someone who never seems to move into battle soon enough. Item: Protect Ring Cost: 3000G Use: Equip for DEF +5, Use for Boost level 1 Use on: Anyone in the Force Location: The battle to Creed's Thoughts: Simple, just give it to someone with a low defence, or low HP. Repair: When used too many times, the ring may break. The cost to have it repaired is 750G. Item: Power Ring Cost: 3000G Use: Equip for ATT +5,Use to temporarily increase another characters ATT Use on: Anyone in the Force Location: The 1st Battle after Ribble, a witch has it. Thoughts: If you don't get it from the witch (she'll drop it if the character who kills her has an empty item slot) you can buy it at the deals section of a shop. Repair: When used too many times, the ring may break. The cost to have it repaired is 750G. Item: Running Ring Cost: 3000G Use: Equip for MOV +2 Use on: Anyone in the Force Location: The room where Desktop Kingdom was (at Creed's Mansion). Search the square behind the chair, facing left (remember the boy trying to lift the ring? That's it!). Thoughts: Many people have problems finding it apparently, but I assure you it's there. Item: White Ring Cost: 5000G Use: Equip for DEF +10, Use for Aura level 2 Use on: HERO, VICR Location: The Dwarven Town on Grans Thoughts: I only ever let Bowie have this one, but that's because I don't use VICRs (I find Master Monks are far superior). Repair: When used too many times, the ring may break. The cost to have it repaired is 1250G. Item: Black Ring Cost: 5000G Use: Equip for ATT +10, Use for Blaze level 2 Use on: SORC, WIZ (cursed) Location: The Battle to Pacalon Thoughts: To be honest, I usually sell this one. Repair: When used too many times, the ring may break. The cost to have it repaired is 1250G. To unequip it, the curse must be removed at a church, this also costs 1250G. Remember, if equipped again, the curse will return! Item: Evil Ring Cost: 5000G Use: Equip for ATT +15, Use for Bolt level 2 Use on: SORC, WIZ, VICR (cursed) Location: The Battle to the Holy Sword Shrine Thoughts: To be honest, I usually sell this one. Repair: When used too many times, the ring may break. The cost to have it repaired is 1250G. To unequip it, the curse must be removed at a church, this also costs 1250G. Remember, if equipped again, the curse will return! Item: Life Ring Cost: 5000G Use: Equip to regain 5HP per round Use on: Anyone in the Force who is promoted Location: The Japanese version only. At the top of the Fairy Woods Bonus stage, to the right of the Bubbling Ooze. See the screenshot on my site at http://shining.zophar.net/shf2 for more details. Thoughts: A very useful item, it's just a shame that it's only in the Japanese version, or at least can only be reached in the Japanese version due to the lack of the search-in-battle option in the USA and UK versions. Item: Chirrup Sandals Cost: 5G Use: They squeak, the wearerseems to become one of the main targets in battle, and if unequipped on Slade or Bowie they may learn the glitch spell "Higins" (no effect). Use on: Anyone in the Force Location: Search the table/chair next to the secret passage in Galam Jail. Thoughts: According to Sir Astral, they 'keep you happy'. The "Higins" spell uses 3 MP and is like a heal, but it doesn't heal. If anybody has found a use for this spell, please let me know! If you look closely, the picture on the sandals would appear to be Jogurt from the original Shining Force! ______________________________________________________________________________ ____iv. Battle Items__________________________________________________________ Item: Shining Ball Cost: 1000G Use: To cause up to 20HP damage with a special attack Use on: Any monster in battle Location: Battle #19 (on the way to the Harpy Pool) Thoughts: I tend to find that my characters can do better attacks without using this item, so give it to a Magic User in case they run out of MP and have to resort to bashing goblins with their sticks! Item: Blizzard Cost: 1200G Use: To cause up to 33HP damage with a special attack Use on: Any monster in battle Location: Battle #24 (Dark Bishop), The Town of Roft Thoughts: I tend to find that my characters can do better attacks without using this item, so give it to a Magic User in case they run out of MP and have to resort to bashing goblins with their sticks! Item: Holy Thunder Cost: 1500G Use: To cause up to 50HP damage with a special attack Use on: Any monster in battle Location: The battle to the Holy Sword Shrine Thoughts: I tend to find that my characters can do better attacks without using this item, so give it to a Magic User in case they run out of MP and have to resort to bashing goblins with their sticks! Item: Angel Wing Cost: 40G Use: In battle for the same effect as "Egress" spell - it returns you to the last town you saved at Use on: Anyone in the Force during a battle Location: All shops, some battles, searchables Thoughts: This is one that I hardly ever use, simply because I don't believe in Egressing a battle (unless I'm doing it to build up levels). If you find that you often die in battle though, this is the item for you. ______________________________________________________________________________ _____v. Promotion Items_______________________________________________________ Some of the Shining Force II characters can be promoted with certain items to a special fighting class. To use them simply have them in the item slot of a character (not in the depot of the caravan) when you go to the priest. He'll automatically offer to use it in the promotion. Characters can only be promoted once, so for example if you've already made Chester a Paladin, he cannot be promoted to Pegasus Knight (if he was still a Knight he could be promoted to Pegasus Knight though). Gold (G) values are the prices at which shops sell the items. This does not mean that all items can be bought at shops, just that if you were to sell them, that's how much you'd pay to get them back. Item: Warrior Pride Cost: 3000G Use: Promotes to Special Class "Baron" (BRN) Use on: Warriors (WARR) Location: Tactical Base at New Granseal, search the Eagle Banner. Pros: Barons have +1 on their MOV and can use Swords Cons: You don't get to see them swinging axes around their heads ;) Item: Pegasus Wing Cost: 3000G Use: Promotes to Special Class "Pegasus Knight" (PGNT) Use on: Knights (KNTE) Location: Pacalon Castle. There is a blue carpet leading out of the throne room. Go down this, on the right hand side (on the carpet, not beside it), until you're facing the outer wall of the castle. Search here. Pros: They can fly, and so are not affected by the terrain Cons: You have to wait a long time to get this item, so for a long while your character will be stuck with a poor weapon Item: Vigor Ball Cost: 3000G Use: Promotes to Special Class "Master Monk" (MMNK) Use on: Priests (PRST) Location: Hidden in a chest under the trees in the top-left corner of the secret Elven Town. There's also another one, nearby Sheela's pool (at the Monastery on Grans), just go straight down from the pool to a tree that is standing alone and search on the right side of it. Note that only the one at Sheela's is in the Japanese version. Pros: Master Monks are amazing at both fighting and healing. Use it!! Cons: None, unless you like Vicars Item: Secret Book Cost: 3000G Use: Promotes to Special Class "Sorcerer" (SORC) Use on: Mages (MAGE) Location: The big building in the Elven Town. Search the bookcases on the top floor. Pros: Sorcerers have much cooler spells (they summon gods) and they look much cooler too. Cons: You'll lose your Blaze, Freeze etc. The sorcerer spells have cumulative damage (eg, the amount of damage is divided by the amount of targets). Item: Silver Tank Cost: 3000G Use: Promotes to Special Class "Brass Gunner" (BRGN) Use on: Archers (ACHR) Location: The Cavern of Darkness, on the way to Mount Volcano. On the right side there is a chest you can open after the battle, it's in there. Pros: A higher defence and the ability to attack long range without a weapon. Cons: Brass Gunners tend to be much slower and seem to never reach the battle in time because of this. ______________________________________________________________________________ ____vi. Important Items_______________________________________________________ Gold (G) values are the prices at which shops sell the items. This does not mean that all items can be bought at shops, just that if you were to sell them, that's how much you'd pay to get them back. "---" means the item cannot be sold, or is worthless. Item: Jewel of Light Cost: ---G Use: You need this Jewel and the Jewel of Evil in order to get the Holy (Force) Sword. Use on: Not applicable Location: Galam Castle, after beating Battle #5. Thoughts: You can't really do anything with this (not even sell it!) because it's an essential item. It just stays hung around Bowie's neck, so forget about it for a while. Item: Jewel of Evil Cost: ---G Use: You need this Jewel and the Jewel of Evil in order to get the Holy (Force) Sword. Use on: Not applicable Location: The Ancient Tower, after beating Battle #7 when King Galam kidnaps Princess Elis. Thoughts: You can't really do anything with this (not even sell it!) because it's an essential item. It just stays hung around Bowie's neck, so forget about it for a while. Item: Raft Cost: ---G Use: To travel along rivers in Southern Parmecia Use on: Not applicable Location: Polca Village. The Mayor will give you a it if you speak with him a few times after the battle inside the village. Thoughts: Another one that you can't go through the game without. You can't not get it, it's part of the story. Don't worry about leaving it behind, it'll still be there when you get back! Item: Wooden Panel Cost: ---G Use: Opens up the Ruins under the tree in Ribble to get the Achilles Sword Use on: The tree in Ribble! Location: The ruins that Petro's grandfather (the keeper of the Sky Orb) takes you to (where there used to be a magic tunnel to Grans Island). It's in the top chest. Thoughts: When you use this item, you must stand in front of the tree (not under the branches though) and use the A button to select item:use. The C button will not work for this! Item: Achilles Sword Cost: 1350G Use: Can be Equipped on Bowie (ATT+19) and to make Rohde tag along Use on: Taros, Rohde Location: Ribble, in the chest in the ruins beneath the tree. See "Wooden Panel" for how to access this area. Thoughts: This is the only weapon that can damage Taros, and is also the item you need to interest Rohde. Without it you cannot get the Caravan. Item: Caravan Cost: ---G Use: To travel along dried-up rivers, and for storage Use on: Not applicable Location: The Taros' Shrine, after you have defeated him. Thoughts: If you don't know how to use the caravan, I suggest you look at Section 11 of the Manual (see section 6.iv of this FAQ). Item: Dry Stone Cost: ---G Use: To get into the Dwarven Town on Grans Use on: The river north of Galam (you'll see there's a "dented" part) Location: The cave with the sick dwarf, it's in the firewood. Thoughts: Make sure you get this one, or you won't be able to get any mithril weapons made for you! Item: Cotton Balloon Cost: ---G Use: To leave Desktop Kingdom Use on: Not applicable Location: Desktop Kingdom, King Ponpei will give you it when you beat the Chess Battle Thoughts: What can I say? Another essential item, which you can't miss anyway. Item: Canon Cost: ---G Use: To clear the rocks at North Cliff, also Rohde can use it to become a Brass Gunner Use on: Dynamite and Rohde Location: The dwarves in the cave will give you this when the fairy from Creed cures the sick dwarf. Thoughts: What can I say? Another essential item, which you can't miss anyway. Item: Dynamite Cost: ---G Use: To clear the rocks at North Cliff Use on: Canon Location: Go to New Granseal and talk to Astral (after you've got the Cannon). Then talk to the guy next to the weapon shop. He'll give you it. Thoughts: Do make sure that you've spoken to Astral first, or the guy won't give you the dynamite. Item: Arm of Golem Cost: ---G Use: To restore Claude's power and make him join Use on: Claude Location: Moun, nearby the West Gate, an odd looking object will sometimes appear. It's a sort of brown colour. Search it, and you'll receive the Arm of Golem. Thoughts: Take this to Claude's Shrine (see map on my site) and use it on the thing that looks like a statue... Claude will then join. Item: Sky Orb Cost: ---G Use: To power the Nazca Ship Use on: The Nazca Ship's Controls Location: Nazca, after you've killed Cameela. Thoughts: What can I say? Another essential item, which you can't miss anyway. Item: Holy (Force) Sword Cost: ---G Use: To open the mouth of the Devil's Head Statue Use on: The Devil's Head Statue Location: Near the end of the game, when you return to Grans Island. South of the Tower, where Granseal was, is a little cave (it's the one featured in the intro, where Slade steals the two jewels). It's on the bottom floor, you just have to search the sword (with 'A') to pick it up. Thoughts: On my site there's a collage showing the sequence leading up to finding the Force Sword, and using it at the Devil's Head. ______________________________________________________________________________ ___vii. Mithril_______________________________________________________________ Just above Galam is a river going down the left. At one point in the river, it looks a little dented in both sides, this is where you use the Dry Stone. You'll be able to see the Dwarven Village on the other side, go in there and find the Blacksmith. Give him some Mithril and he'll offer to make you a weapon for 5000G (make sure you've got plenty of cash!). It has been said that 15 pieces is quite an odd number, since there are 12 members of the fighting Force. Although many have suggested that there may be 24 mithrils (with some only available by searching in battle in the Japanese release of the game...), a new Theory put forward suggests otherwise... :::::: 15 Mithril Theory :::::: "It has long been debated how many pieces of mithril really exist. We all know there are at least 15 pieces, but it just seems like such an odd number, given that there are 12 characters on the Force at any one time. Maybe the extras are just to try and get better weapons when you've wasted a piece of mithril? Nope, that's not it. Or at least, not according to Ace, who has submitted the following theory which seems to explain it all! Throughout the game various weapons can be found, bought in the deals or dropped by monsters... even some that are only otherwise available through the Blacksmith. However, not all the mithril weapons are available through other means, and surprise surprise, there are in fact 15 Mithril Weapons which are only available through the Blacksmith. Hence, the 15 Mithrils are to enable you to get one of each uniquely crafted weapon! The weapons are as follows: 1. Levanter 2. Katana 3. Ninja Kitana 4. Gisarme 5. Halberd 6. Mist Javelin 7. Holy Lance 8. Ground Axe 9. Rune Axe 10. Holy Staff 11. Supply Staff 12. Freeze Staff 13. Grand Cannon 14. Misty Knuckles 15. Giant Knuckles Mystery solved!! Thanks very much Ace, what a marvellous finding!" Use: To make Mithril Weapons Use on: Give them to the Dwarven Blacksmith Location: 1. Behind the Ancient Tower on Grans Island - stand inbetween the two windows and search facing up. 2. Near the Holy Sword's Shrine on Grans Island - search the rock that hangs lowest from the mountains. 3. When Slade helps you escape from Galam Jail and takes you down into a secret passage, walk directly up and search. 4. After the Earthquake in Granseal, search the small hole in the ground on the right side of the castle. 5. The centre square of the sandpit in Ribble. 6. Outside the left hand fence of Hassan, in a chest. 7. Among the barrels in the south of Hassan. 8. In Eastern Parmecia, go over the lower bridge and search in the 2-square indentation in the mountains, facing east. 9. A chest hidden under the trees in the bottom right of the secret Elven Town. 10. In the passage to Creed's, go down beside the stairs, then when you come to the hidden link to the chests, go down the middle of this link to reach a totally undetectable area containing a chest with mithril inside it. 11. In the mountains of Devil's Tail, north-east of Creed's Mansion. 12. In Pacalon, go into the castle. In a room in the top left you'll see 3 stones outside the castle wall. Walk through the wall towards these (there's a hidden gap) and go down the stairs into the treasury where you'll find a chest. 13. North of Pacalon (on the way to Pangoat Valley/The Bridge) there are some mountains to your right. Search the peak of these. 14. Chest on the right hand side inside Mitula's Shrine. 15. In a chest amongst the trees on the right side of the monastery where you find Sheela on Grans Island. Thoughts: Some of the more powerful weapons (like the Gisarme) are extremely difficult to get, so I recommend that you save game before asking him to make you something. If you're not happy with what you get then you can reset and try again (be warned: it could take a long time... on the other hand you might get lucky and get the Gisarme first try!). The smith can do up to 4 weapons at a time, but I always stick to having just one made, because if you get one good weapon and three rubbish ones then you either lose 3 pieces of mithril to keep the good one, or you lose the good one and risk getting all rubbish ones the next time. After you've placed an order with him, leave the village (there's an exit nearby) and go back - the weapon will then be ready. ============================================================================== > > 4. Mithril Weapons_______________________________________________________ For those of you who don't know: all those little rocks you gathered on your journey finally come to be of use when you return to Grans Island. Levels for Learning Spells____________________________________________ The numbers after the spell's name indicate the character's total level to learn the spell. The total level includes 20 levels gained before promotion. Even if you promoted after level 20 the game assumes there were only 20 levels gained before promotion, and the numbers shown below are not affected. For example, if you were to level Karna up to 40 before promoting her, she would learn Blast 4 at level 37. If you had promoted her before she reached level 37 she would not learn the spell until level 17 after promotion - the game assumes she only gained 20 levels before promotion (37 - 20 = 17!). For Sorcerer and Ninja Spells the level simply refers to their current level, as they start afresh with new spells when promoted. Any levels gained before promotion have no effect on their new spells. -- indicates the spell does not reach that level. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ HEALER SPELLS ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ :::::::SARAH::::::: L1 L2 L3 L4 Heal 1 7 22 40 Detox 4 13 33 45 Blast 10 16 25 36 Slow 19 29 -- -- :::::::KARNA::::::: L1 L2 L3 L4 Heal 1 5 22 -- Blast 8 16 26 37 Boost 4 13 33 45 Aura 33 41 55 60 ::::::FRAYJA:::::: L1 L2 L3 L4 Heal 1 13 56 60 Detox 5 17 37 43 Aura 34 40 46 52 Attack 49 -- -- -- ::::::SHEELA:::::: L1 L2 L3 L4 Heal 1 5 41 51 Blast 7 18 38 47 Muddle 11 36 -- -- Boost 20 44 -- -- ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ WIZARD SPELLS ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ :::::::KAZIN:::::: L1 L2 L3 L4 Blaze 1 5 22 35 Muddle 9 25 -- -- Dispel 13 -- -- -- Desoul 18 29 -- -- :::::::TYRIN:::::: L1 L2 L3 L4 Blaze 1 11 51 56 Freeze 5 22 31 38 Sleep 25 -- -- -- Bolt 28 35 54 60 :::::::CHAZ::::::: L1 L2 L3 L4 Blaze 1 11 56 60 Freeze 6 17 25 46 Bolt 40 44 49 53 Dispel 41 -- -- -- :::::::SLADE:::::: L1 L2 L3 L4 Katon 4 9 25 -- Raijin 14 19 32 -- :::::::BOWIE:::::: L1 L2 L3 L4 Egress 1 -- -- -- Bolt 22 31 42 51 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ SORCERER SPELLS ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ :::::::KAZIN:::::: L1 L2 L3 L4 Dao 1 12 -- -- Apollo 4 17 -- -- Neptun 7 26 -- -- Atlas 21 32 -- -- :::::::TAYA::::::: L1 L2 L3 L4 Dao 1 15 -- -- Apollo 12 19 -- -- Neptun 22 29 -- -- Atlas 25 34 -- -- :::::::TYRIN:::::: L1 L2 L3 L4 Dao 1 12 -- -- Apollo 3 16 -- -- Neptun 8 25 -- -- Atlas 20 29 -- -- ______________________________________________________________________________ ____ii. Spell Details_________________________________________________________ Spell is the Spell's name, LV is the level of that spell the rest of the details refer to, MP is the number of Magic Points to cast the spell, Range is how far from the player the spell can be cast, Affect is the area over which the spell has affect and the Effect is the result of the spell. The following icons are displayed on characters/monsters stats sheets under certain conditions: Muscular Arm - When an Attack spell has been cast on them Running Figure - When a Boost spell has been cast on them Red Eyed Skull - When a character is Cursed (remove with Detox) Ring of Stars - When a Muddle spell has been cast on them zzZZ - When a Sleep spell has been cast on them Ball and Chain - When a Slow spell has been cast on them Just as your characters can cast spells on monsters, monsters can cast spells on your characters. It is important therefore that you are able to recognise the last 3 of the above symbols and what they mean in order to avoid catastrophies (imagine a muddled Peter or Slade with a Gisarme attacking Bowie!). Other symbols used (yet to have icons added to this page) represent Poison, Paralysis and Dispel, the first two of which can be easily reversed with a Detox spell. Full Walkthrough______________________________________________________ Part 1. Grans Island ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Granseal As soon as you wake up head right, towards the school. In the basement of the school, search the case to find medical herb. Sarah the priest and Chester the knight will join you, then you should go to the castle. In the west wing of the castle are three chests, which contain medical herb, angel wing and antidote. When you go to the Tower, walk behind it and line yourself up between the two windows. Walk north as far as you can, then search to find a piece of mithril. Battle 1 - Granseal's Tower Boss: Gizmo directly over pink one Monster # HP MP AT DF AG MV Gizmo 6 5 0 8 5 5 5 Granseal After the battle, go to the boat in the east of Granseal. At the docks you will find a Quick Chicken amongst the right-hand barrels. In the bottom of the boat you'll find a medical herb in the right-hand barrels. As you leave Granseal, Jaha the warrior will join you. Outside of Granseal there is a battle to get to Yeel. Battle 2 - To Yeel or the South Shrine Boss: Huge Rat closest to Yeel Monster # HP MP AT DF AG MV Ooze 4 9 0 11 6 5 4 Huge Rat 2 10 0 12 8 7 6 South Shrine If you go south to the Holy Sword's Shrine before you go to Yeel, you can find a piece of mithril. It is located in the mountains around the shrine, the one that hangs down lowest as you go toward the cave. From here you should go to Yeel. Yeel Not a lot happens here. If you search the vase in the first house you come to you'll find healing seed. From here, you need to exit through the top of the town to get to Hawel's House. On the way, you'll have a battle. Battle 3 - To Hawel's House Boss: Huge Rat closest to Hawel's Monster # HP MP AT DF AG MV Ooze 3 9 0 11 6 5 4 Huge Rat 2 10 0 12 8 7 6 Huge Bat 1 11 0 15 8 8 6 Hawel's House When Hawel dies, Kazin the mage joins the force. There are two chests in the house, containing antidote and healing drop. When you leave the house, there is a battle. Battle 4 - To Galam Jail Boss: Galam Archer closest to Yeel Monster # HP MP AT DF AG MV Huge Bat 3 11 0 15 8 8 6 Galam Archer 2 15 0 15 10 10 5 Galam Soldier 3 11 0 15 10 8 6 Galam Whether you win or lose the battle, you are arrested and taken to Galam Jail. When you wake up in the prison, walk left and search the table to find the Chirrup Sandals. Slade will help you escape, and as soon as you land in his secret passage, walk up and search the wall. You'll find a piece of mithril. Battle 5 - Inside Galam Castle Boss: Galam Knight Monster # HP MP AT DF AG MV Galam Archer 2 15 0 15 10 10 5 Galam Soldier 3 11 0 15 10 8 6 Galam Mage 2 14 5 15 9 11 5 Galam Knight 1 16 0 17 11 12 7 Galam After the battle you will get the Jewel of Light. Slade the thief will join. Inside Galam town you can sneak into the weapon store and find 2 medical herbs in the chests. You can't use the north gate out of the town, so you have to go out the bottom, back to Granseal. When you leave, there will be another battle. Battle 6 - Escape to Granseal Boss: Dark Cleric Monster # HP MP AT DF AG MV Galam Archer 1 15 0 15 10 10 5 Galam Soldier 3 11 0 15 10 8 6 Galam Mage 2 14 5 15 9 11 5 Galam Knight 2 16 0 17 11 12 7 Dark Cleric 1 15 7 18 11 13 5 Granseal When you arrive back here, you find that it is too late, the Galam Soldiers have already been. The animals from the pet shop have been set loose, but if you go to the small house with the vase and barrel, you will find one of them, cold and alone. Talk to him and he'll join you (you get to name him, but his default name is Kiwi). He's a tortoise and has a high defence and attack, unfortunately he has only got 7 HP and never gets many more. He is very vulnerable to magic and eventually his defence will be the same as the others'. When you go to the castle (even though your mother asked you not to!), you'll have to go to the Ancient Tower and fight a battle. Battle 7 - Kidnap of Elis Boss: Dark Smoke left of lone demon statue Monster # HP MP AT DF AG MV Galam Archer 3 15 0 15 10 10 5 Galam Mage 1 14 5 15 9 11 5 Galam Knight 3 16 0 17 11 12 7 Dark Cleric 1 15 7 18 11 13 5 Dark Smoke 2 18 20 22 13 13 6 Ancient Tower After this, Princess Elis will be kidnapped, and you will get the Jewel of Evil. There will be an earthquake, forcing you to set sail from Grans to Parmecia, but before you leave, search the small hole made by the earthquake, outside the castle and to the right. You'll find a mithril. That's the end of Part One, as nothing happens on the journey on the boat... ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Part 2. South Parmecia ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ New Granseal As soon as the boat lands on the continent, you will have to go to North Cliff to save a man who was trapped. Battle 8 - North Cliff Boss: Hunter Goblin closest to man at the cliff Monster # HP MP AT DF AG MV Witch 2 21 10 19 12 15 6 Green Ooze 2 17 0 22 12 12 4 Goblin 4 18 0 22 13 13 5 Hunter Goblin 3 24 0 22 12 14 5 North Cliff Here you find out that there is a tunnel which leads to the North, but there is no way to shift the rocks that block it. New Granseal In the new town, the King will ask you to find him a way to get back to Grans Island to save Elis. Bear this in mind during your travels. Go to the Tactical Base and search the eagle shield to find the Warrior Pride (promotes Warriors to Barons). There is Cheerful Bread in the top barrel in the room left of the throne room. When you leave the castle, you can raid the houses (to find: Angel Wing, Antidote, Healing Seed and Healing Drop) and then go to meet Peter the Phoenix, who will join (but you can't control him in battle until you've been to see Volcanon). When you finish here, the Minister will give you 100 Gold Coins and then you should go to Ribble. Battle 9 - To Ribble Boss: Vampire Bat closest to river cave Monster # HP MP AT DF AG MV Witch 2 21 10 19 12 15 6 Green Ooze 2 17 0 22 12 12 4 Goblin 3 18 0 22 13 13 5 Hunter Goblin 2 24 0 22 12 14 5 Vampire Bat 2 20 8 26 16 16 6 Ribble May the Ranger will join here. There is a piece of mithril in the center square of the grey sandpit. Here you'll find out about the ruins under the tree, and that you need the Achilles Sword to defeat the Taros. You'll also find out about the Caravan. There is Bright Honey in the vase in the bottom-left house. From Ribble, you should go to Polca Village, to the North. In the battle from Ribble, one of the Witches has the Power Ring, if the character who defeats her has a free item slot, she will drop it and he/she will pick it up. Battle 10 - To The East Boss: Dark Dwarf above river (closest to river) Monster # HP MP AT DF AG MV Witch 2 21 10 19 12 15 6 Goblin 3 18 0 22 13 13 5 Hunter Goblin 2 24 0 22 12 14 5 Vampire Bat 3 20 8 26 16 16 6 Dark Dwarf 2 21 0 27 17 18 4 Eastern Parmecia You need to go East, across the top bridge and then West. If you go over the bottom bridge, instead of the top, you'll find a piece of mithril, in a 2-square dent in the mountains. Fight your way through the Cavern of Darkness (inside the cave is a chest that contains Silver Tank) to reach the village. Battle 11 - Cavern of Darkness Boss: Hobgoblin Monster # HP MP AT DF AG MV Witch 2 21 10 19 12 15 6 Hunter Goblin 2 24 0 22 12 14 5 Vampire Bat 3 20 8 26 16 16 6 Dark Dwarf 2 21 0 27 17 18 4 Hobgoblin 1 21 0 25 19 19 5 Polca Village Not a lot happens here the first time. There is a Protect Milk in the house which is built into the earth. Mount Volcano erupts and a blind boy, called Oddler is found and taken into care. If you go to the West of the village, you'll see a strange looking creature who has fallen over. Go to help him and he'll talk to you about Creed (he refers to Creed as 'HE'). Once you've heard all there is to hear, go to the top right to exit the village. You will then have a mountain-side battle to Bedoe, the Bird Town. Battle 12 - Mountainside to Bedoe Boss: Death Archer Monster # HP MP AT DF AG MV Witch 2 21 10 19 12 15 6 Hobgoblin 5 21 0 25 19 19 5 Death Monk 3 23 13 27 14 18 6 Death Archer 1 27 0 28 19 20 5 Evil Cloud 1 22 0 30 18 17 5 Bedoe In Bedoe, you'll find out more about Creed, the ex-Greater Devil. The Quick Ring is in the vase next to the bird on the 3rd floor who says "We need a lot of hot water..." After you've spoken to King Bedoe (on the top floor), you must go to Mount Volcano to speak with God Volcanon. The King will tell you to get a raft, and will send Luke to escort you. When you go back through Bedoe, talk to the baby bird on the ledge outside the Kings' Level and all the birds on the 3rd floor. When you leave the town, wander around the bushes outside on the left and the baby bird should fall on you, his mother will thank you and he will join your team later in the game. If you don't get him to fall on you at this point, he will not join. From here you should go back to Polca. Polca Village When you arrive Gerhalt, the Wolf Man will join you, after which there will be a battle. Battle 13 - Inside Polca Village Boss: Master Mage Monster # HP MP AT DF AG MV Hobgoblin 3 21 0 25 19 19 5 Death Archer 4 27 0 28 19 20 5 Evil Cloud 2 22 0 30 18 17 5 Master Mage 1 28 14 25 18 22 5 Black Monk 1 30 19 33 18 21 6 Zombie 5 27 0 32 20 18 5 Polca Village After the battle, go to the Mayor's House (it's along the top, to the left) and he'll arrange a raft for you, if you'll take the blind boy with you. Agree to do this and leave the town. When you leave, Luke, the Bird Man will join you (make sure you go back into the village to buy him a Long Sword). Head south along the river to get back to the area around Ribble. From this area you need to go East along the river and then when you come to the mountains, get off the raft to the south and go into the Eastern area. You'll have a battle here, after which you can go into some ruins. Battle 14 - To Petro's Grandfather Boss: Golem under left of oasis Monster # HP MP AT DF AG MV Death Archer 2 27 0 28 19 20 5 Evil Cloud 2 22 0 30 18 17 5 Master Mage 1 28 14 25 18 22 5 Black Monk 2 30 19 33 18 21 6 Zombie 4 27 0 32 20 18 5 Golem 4 24 0 35 24 19 4 Ruins in the East In the ruins you'll meet Petro's Grandfather and find a Steel Sword. Search the chest in the top to find the Wooden Panel and Power Water in the one on the left. Take the Wooden Panel to Ribble. Ribble Use the Wooden Panel at the tree here. You must stand in front of the tree, and not beneath it's branches, using the A button to select 'use'. A tunnel will open under it, inside of which you'll find the Achilles Sword. From here you should head down the river towards Hassan. Battle 16 - Kraken Monster Boss: Kraken Head Monster # HP MP AT DF AG MV Kraken Head 1 35 0 50 29 25 5 Kraken Arm 2 30 0 42 28 22 6 Kraken Leg 8 24 0 38 26 19 6 Hassan When you get there, you can find two pieces of mithril: one in a chest outside the fence, to the left and one in the barrels south of the town. Inside the pub, search the barrels to find a Running Pimento, then go and talk to Rohde, who'll tag along. Take him to the west to the Taros Shrine. Battle 17 - Desert to the Taros Shrine Boss: Farthest Soulsower Monster # HP MP AT DF AG MV Master Mage 2 28 14 25 18 22 5 Black Monk 2 30 19 33 18 21 6 Golem 2 24 0 35 24 19 4 Arrow Launcher 2 33 0 35 24 23 4 Gargoyle 4 29 0 38 23 21 6 Soul Sower 2 27 0 43 32 25 4 Taros Shrine Only the Achilles Sword can harm Taros, so keep the others out of the way. There is a Healing Water in the chest at the Shrine. Hassan Rick the knight joins here. A new weapon shop has opened, but other than that there's nothing more to do here. Stock up on healing seed here though, then head west along the dried up river in the caravan to get to a small cave. Dwarven Mine Search the fireplace to find the Dry Stone and talk to the dwarves on the right. Then exit the cave and cross the river at the lowest possible place, opposite the lighter patch in the forest. You should be able to get into the Elven Town without the battle first that way. Otherwise, fight the battle, then go in. Either way, you must fight the battle. Elven Town Lots to find here. In the top left there is a chest that contains Vigor Ball, and to the bottom right one that has mithril. There is Fairy Powder in a vase in the largest house, and if you search the top left bookshelf in the top floor of the same house, you'll find Secret Book. If you go around the outside of the houses, under the trees, clockwise, you'll come to the mithril chest and then go along the two-square gap in the trees to reach a secret battle, in which the Bubbling Ooze is the boss, and will keep summoning new monsters until you kill it. You'll probably be too weak to beat it at this point in the game, but it's worth a go - in the Japanese version the Life Ring and Right of Hope can be found, not to mention that the Blue Shaman at the end carries a Healing Rain. Now head West towards Devil's Tail (if you didn't fight the battle before entering the town, you must fight it now, a High Priest will drop a Shining Ball). Battle 19 - To The Harpy Pool Boss: Orc above & between Soulsower and High Priest Monster # HP MP AT DF AG MV Arrow Launcher 2 33 0 35 24 23 4 Gargoyle 3 29 0 38 23 21 6 Soul Sower 4 27 0 43 32 25 4 Dark Madam 1 29 17 38 31 29 6 High Priest 2 30 29 40 31 23 5 Orc 3 30 0 43 37 27 5 Harpy Pool Oddler will hear someone crying out for help on the way to Devil's Tail, so you follow the sound to the Harpy Pool. Elric the archer is trapped in the pool, but before you can rescue him, you have to battle the Harpies. After the battle you'll save him and he will join. You can find a Healing Drop on the right side of the pool. Battle 20 - Harpy Pool Boss: Harpy in lower right corner Monster # HP MP AT DF AG MV Arrow Launcher 1 33 0 35 24 23 4 Dark Madam 2 29 17 38 31 29 6 High Priest 2 30 29 40 31 23 5 Orc 2 30 0 43 37 27 5 Harpy 5 32 10 48 38 29 7 Passage to Creed's Before you go up the stairs, you'll find a secret passage kinda below them and to the left. If you follow this, you'll come to 3 chests. One of these contains a Brave Apple, the others contain Medical Herb and Angel Wing. Also, there is another secret passage, completely undetectable. At the point where there is a dark area before the 3 chests, walk down at the center. You'll find some mithril in a chest. You can then go up the stairs. In Devil's Tail itself, after the next battle, you can find another mithril hidden in the 3 square indentation in the mountains in the north. In the next battle, a Dark Madam will drop the Protect Ring and a Skeleton will drop a Broad Sword. Go to the room where Desktop Kingdom was, and search the square behind the chair to find Running Ring. Go out the door into the garden to find various items amongst the plants (Antidote & medical herb). When you are going to leave, Creed will allow you to choose one of 4 characters to take with you, either: Karna the Priest, Eric the Knight, Randolf the Warrior or Tyrin the Mage. They are all on Level 24, though Karna is usually considered the best choice (esp. when a Master Monk), and you can go back later to get the others. Oddler will decide to stay here when you leave. When you're out of his front door, walk to the left and go through the bushes to reach a chest which contains Healing Rain. From here, go back to the Dwarven Mine, with the fairy. Dwarven Mine The fairy will cure the sick dwarf and in return for your help, they will give you the Cannon. Take this to New Granseal. New Granseal Go to the castle and talk to Astral, then talk to the man by the weapon shop. He'll give you some dynamite which you can use with the Cannon. When you go out of the passages, the people have re-inhabited their homes and will ask you to take away the Arm of Golem. To get it, you need to walk on/search the top left square, then the arm will appear. Search it to pick it up. You need it to get Claude to join later in the game. From here, go through the West Gate to Nazca. Nazca You'll fight Cameela here, but make sure that whoever kills her has an empty item slot, since she'll drop the Sky Orb when she dies (she'll also warn you that Geshp has 'Prism Flowers' & during the battle you can win a Wish Staff). Goliath, Creed's Servant, will inform you that Oddler remembered something and went psycho. He thinks that Creed fell into the sea and died. If you speak with the three characters you rejected earlier in the game, they'll all be willing to join you now. Once they've joined, head back to the North to fly the Nazca Ship. Nazca Walk into the 'eye' of the ship to enter it. Inside you'll find the Nazca Cannon, a weapon. Say when you're ready to go, and then you're on your way back to your homeland and to the dark realm of Arc Valley... ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Part 4. Return to Grans Island ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Crash Site The ship will crash land after being fired at by the Prism Flowers, and on leaving the crash, you'll realise it's beyond repair. Head south-west from here towards a small Monastery. Monastery (aka Dojo) Here you can find a Brave Apple in a vase and then save game etc, but don't leave right after that: if you walk along the left of the building, you'll find a group of trees. One of these (on it's own) has the second Vigor Ball. Continue going upwards to a waterfall, where you'll meet Sheela doing a bit of skinny-dipping. She'll recognise Sir Astral and join. Then head up the right side to find a piece of Mithril. Now head towards the town of Roft. In the next battle you can win a Heat Axe. Here you'll be told more about the Dwarven Blacksmith and where he lives. You'll also meet Petro (his Grandfather was the one who showed you where the old magic tunnel to Grans was), who dies soon after you arrive. This is not all that bad really, as after his death, Zynk decides to join. When you've finished here, follow the little path along the coast which is south of Roft. You'll cross a few bridges to reach the entrance to a cave. Claude's Cave Claude the Good Golem is here, and you'll need to use the Arm of Golem to make him join. If you don't have it he'll just complain, however, despite the fact that the Nazca Ship can no longer be used, there is still a way to return to the mainland to get his arm (and any mithril you happen to have missed - you'll be going to get it made into weapons soon). All you need do is go to the bottom of Claude's Cave, on the left you'll find a few squares that have a sort of brown engraved panel on them, one of these will open up the way to the Magic Tunnel. From here you can go back to Parmecia, and use the tunnel to go back to Grans (so if you forgot to go back for the other 3 characters at Creed's Mansion you can do it now). Prism Flowers Once you have gotten Claude, head back out from the coastal pathway, and then to the Prism Flowers battle. Try not to get in a horizontal or vertical line from them, as they have lasers. You might notice another chest in this battle, but it too can only be reached in the Japanese version of the game - it contains a Valkyrie. This is a good fight to replay to gain more experience. This is where you use the Dry Stone to reach the Dwarven Town in Grans Forest. Here you can find a Healing Water (chest on the right, outside); the Demon Rod (in a vase) and also the White Ring (chest on the left, outside). This is the place where you get the BlackSmith to make you some weapons with the mithril you have collected on your travels. Have a look at the Mithril Weapons Section to find out more about this. When you're done here, head south towards Galam. Galam In Galam you'll hear about the Devil's Head Statue and also find out some more about Lemon. Not a lot else to do here except finding a Healing Water in the treasury and the Evil Shot amongst the bushes outside the Northern Gate. Head towards Yeel, on the way you'll have a battle (in which you can win a Buster Shot and a Fairy Tear). When you go to leave you can either speak to Lemon and make him join or just ignore him. Either way he'll end up in the force eventually. Now leave the town and head south. If you didn't collect the mithril here at the start of the game, you can now (but you'll have to go back to the Blacksmith again). Inside the Shrine you'll find a Power Water and the Holy Sword. When you find the sword you'll have to search using A to pull it loose, and it will then be named the Force Sword. It will tell you that 'something opened somewhere', which means that the chest on the floor above can be reached now. It contains an Evil Axe. Now you should be ready to head into the last few battles of the game. Devil's Head When you arrive at the Devil's Head statue, there appears to be no way inside, and it should be like this in order for you to reach the Evil Lance behind it (you need to work your way through the 'trees'). Once you have this, you can then use the Force Sword at the mouth of the Statue (as the Story Tellers in Tristan told you to) to open it. If you passed Lemon by in Yeel, he'll join you now. Inside the head you have a maze to get through - see the new map (on my site) if you get stuck! After the maze, you'll meet up with an old friend: Oddler, but now you must fight him, as he is the Greater Devil Lord OddEye! He's very tough to kill and you need to be careful during the fight as the central and north-eastern sections of the battlefield crumble away, taking occupants of the spaces with them. You can win a Counter Sword and a Fairy Tear in this battle. My strategy for Zeon is to keep most of them away from him, and just send in one at a time. When they need healing, send a healer in. Keep them there until they die, then send someone else in. I'll leave you to decide if it's worth it or not! ______________________________________________________________________________ ____ii. Frequently Asked Questions____________________________________________ 1. How do I get the chest outside Mitula's Sanctuary - the one on the island in the lake around the temple/How do I get the chest in the Prism Flowers Battle? The answer is really quite simple: you can't get it. In the original SHF game, characters could search during battles, but in SHF2, they can't. So, even though the fliers can reach the chest, they can't open it. In the Japanese version you can take a flier to the chest and make him face north, the 'stay' option turns into a 'search' option... apparently the game took up nearly the whole cartridge on the Japanese version, and when it was converted to US/UK it took even more (like more than a whole cart) and some bits had to be cut out. The chest as Mitula's contains a Shining Ball and the Prism Flower chest contains a Valkyrie (IIRC). 2. How do I get through the maze at the Devil's Head Statue? I have a new map of it now (see my website), but if you just want a description, here it is: As you enter Devil's Head, go up, then turn right at the junction. Go up the stairs on the right. At the four-way crossroads, go up, then down the stairs on the right. Follow the path to the top, then go left and up the stairs. Go down the path (don't slide down the other side!). Go down the stairs on the left. Ignore the 3 stairs in a row and go up past them, then along the path under them. Go up the stairs and down the path. Fall down the left slide, go up and then left up the stairs. Go up, and down the slide on the end. Follow on up the stairs and you're at the large door. 3. Whenever I go to fight the big guy in armour (The Taros), he just tells me to go away. How do I fight him? You need the Achilles Sword. Look at the list of important items for how to get this. Visit Rohde when you've got it, and he'll go to the Taros (the guy in Armour) with you. You can fight him now, but only the Achilles Sword can damage him. 4. Rohde always tells me that he's busy and to come back later. When I do, he says the same. How can I make him join me? See above answer. 5. When I go back to Yeel, after I've been to Parmecia, the town is deserted. What am I supposed to do here? Play the Piano and a stairway will open up in the church. 6. On the west side of Pacalon Castle, I can see a stairway, but no way to reach it. To reach it is fairly simple: go inside the castle, to the room where you can see the stairs outside. On the outside of the castle wall, there should be a small group of stones. At this point there is a hole in the wall. Go through this. 7. I follow an old man to a room where he says there is a tunnel to Grans Island. When we get there and I kill the monsters, he tells me it's locked. Where do I go from here? You don't need that tunnel. Use the wooden panel you find in the room, as described in the Important Items list. Then go to Devils Tail (west Parmecia) to see Creed. I'm sure you can figure the rest out (or see the walkthrough!. 8. How do I get the Holy/Force Sword out of the stone? You need to search using the A button. 9. The Taros dropped his sword/Cameela dropped the Iron Ball. Nobody can equip it, what does it do? The Taros Sword casts a Bolt level 2 and the Iron Ball a Blaze 3, but no-one can use them. Their only real use is to sell! 10. Are there any cheats for Shining Force 1? See my Shining Force 1 site at http://shining.zophar.net/shf1/ 11. How many Mithrils are there and where are they located? At my last count there were 15, and they are listed in section 3.vii 12. What does the 'Game Completed' option do? It makes the Sound Test and Re-Name Characters cheat work. For these the game needs to have been completed. Some people have informed me that selecting 'yes' for this option can lead to the game crashing and deleting your saved games. 13. Is there going to be a Shining Force 3 on the Genesis? Sega are no longer releasing games for the Genesis, however Shining Force 3 is now available on the Saturn. See the Shining Force Central (http://shining.zophar.net/sfc/) for further info on new (and all old) Shining Force games. Note: Shining Force 3 ('The Final Conflict') has been around on the Game Gear in Japan for a few years now. The ROM is on my downloads page unfortunately it too is in Japanese only. 14. I can't get the UDUDLRLR.... cheat to work! What am I doing wrong? If you don't hear the fanfare, then it's probably because you're still holding UP when you press B or you're still holding B when you press START. If you are using a ROM and emulator, the problem is usually the joypad (for some reason). Try doing it on the cursor keypad instead. 15. Where can I buy Shining Force1/2/Shining in the Darkness? There is a list at Shining Force Central, http://shining.zophar.net/sfc/goods_buy.html The games are very hard to come by these days, and they tend to be quite pricey as a result of this. 16. Which are the best characters for the force / Which characters do you usually use? The characters themselves depend upon how good you have made them. Your best bet is to take the best two of each basic class. If there aren't two then take another from a different class. I usually have two Sword users (the main character and a flier), two Healers (they all tend to get bumped-off fairly fast without someone to look after them!), two Magic-users (one who is best with Freeze, one who is best with Blaze), two Warriors, two Knights and two Archers. I also usually plan my battles ahead and keep to a few basic strategies, outlined on my tips page. My Force often ends up as follows: Bowie, Sarah, Chester, Zynk, Karna, Kazin, Slade, Peter, May, Gerhalt, Jaro and Chaz, but it really does depend on who I build up. Any one of the characters is potentially brilliant, but some take a little more time and effort. 17. I bought the game used, without the booklet, could you tell me how to... Well I could, but I'd rather you just had a look at the one I typed out, see section 6.iv I left a few bits out, but it's fairly complete. 18. Are you going to make a page/FAQ about Shining Force 1 or Shining Force CD? I'm currently working on my Shining Force Guide, and I'm planning to make sites for the Game Gear games (2 of which became Shining Force CD), but don't expect anything too quickly, I'm very short on time. See Shining Force Central for links to hundreds of Shining Force sites online. 19. Are there any Game Genie/Action Replay codes for Shining Force 2? Yes, although it was thought for a long time that there were no such cheats. See section 7.ii for more info. 20. When I tried to equip Lemon with a weapon, it didn't work, what's wrong? This is an Emulator-only bug, for which there is only one remedy. You need to download the GenEdit program from my downloads page and use it to edit the saved game. Like this you can equip him with whatever you like. 21. How do I use the promotion items (and can I promote a Paladin to Pegasus Knight/Gladiator to Baron/Vicar to Mastermonk/Sniper to Brass Gunner/Wizard to Sorcerer)? To use the promotion items make sure a character is holding the item (ie: it's not in the caravan) when you go to the priest for a promo. He will automatically offer to use the item to promote to the special class, but you can refuse if you want to save it fo someone else. Remember that characters can only be promoted once, so for example Chester can go from Knight to Paladin or Knight to Pegasus Knight but not from Paladin to Pegasus Knight or from Pegasus Knight to Paladin. 22. Whenever I save a game and power-down, each time I go back to play it the savegame is gone! Why is this? (non-emulator) Ah, the old "It won't save anymore!" problem. Yes, I've had this one. When I first bought Shining Force 1, it was a used copy of the game and after a day of solid playing and getting most of the way through the game, I switched off, only to return the next day and find nothing! First, the problem itself is that the battery inside the cartridge has run out. Y'know it's called battery backup? Well, that's exactly what it is, and once the battery is dead, it can't backup anymore. So, it needs replacing. The problem is fairly simple to resolve, and can be in one of two ways: You should be able to take it into a games store and they can do it for you (that's the expensive option). The way I got around it was to carefully unscrew the back panel of the cartridge (usually this involves heavily mangling the plastic screws in the back) and removing the offending item (dead battery). Then, you need to take it to a battery-selling store and find one that's the same (if you're not sure, ask the guy at the counter for help - you need to get the right one). Take it home, put it in the cart (same way around as the old one was) and put the cart back together. You may well have to use new screws in it, as the old ones are probably beyond repair by this stage. Try saving a game after this and all should be well. I must say however that if anything goes wrong (unlikely) I can't accept responsibility for it. If in doubt, get it done by a pro. ______________________________________________________________________________ ___iii. Strategies____________________________________________________________ :::::: Battle Tips :::::: Your VICR/WIZ/SOCR may seem to be weak in defense. Well, I have them to be equipped with the Guardian Staff for the +5 DEF. It isn't really necessary to upgrade your VICR/WIZ/SOCR attack with a strong staff. This is what I do: Have KAZIN, CHAZ, TYRIN, and TAYA be equipped with the Guardian Staff and have the Indra staves as tools to retrieve lost MP. From: necro_s@yahoo.com When fighting Magic-users, do not let any characters stand next to each other except at diagonals (see Fig. 1). This means that the enemies can only use magic on one of your players at a time, unless they have a very high level of magic, because of the shape of the area that their spells generally affect (see Fig. 2). Fig. 1 [] [] [] [] [] Fig. 2 [] [][][] [] When faced with magic-using opponents, use the spell opposite to their own against them, ie: those who use Blaze should be attacked with a Freeze and those who use a Freeze should be attacked with a Blaze. I also often find that when the enemy can't use magic, you can tell which spell to use on them from their colour. 'Cold' coloured enemies (blues, purples and greens) should be fought with Blaze, and 'Hot' coloured (red, orange, etc.) are best attacked using a Freeze spell. But this might just be a coincidence. Another useful idea is to make sure that the Knights each have a spear and a lance. The lances may be more powerful, but on those occasions when distance is needed in an attack, it is good to be able to equip them with a spear and get in that extra attack that they couldn't have done with a lance. Many of the weapons and rings can be used as well as equipped, often having the same effect as a magic spell. Useful if you need to save your MP's for the main guardian. The Halberd and Heat Axe are especially good. Always check the stats of the monsters farthest away from you: the one with the best stats is usually the main guardian. If you aim to reach him and kill him first, the others will die too. This does, however, mean that you miss out on a lot of experience points and money. Don't just try to 'up' one character's stats, the others will fall way behind and so weaken your force. However, you should always try to help characters who are not so good. The best way to do this is to use your best characters to 'down' the enemy's HP to their last few and then let the weaker characters finish them off. This keeps the experience spread out fairly even. Keep an eye on the land effect (a high land effect decreases movement range), and remember: it doesn't affect fliers. The above is not exactly true, though I thought it was for several years. Although areas of high land effect often coincide with difficult terrain, that is not always the case. For example, a centaur's movement range is not hampered on grass, which has a L.E. of 15%. However, their movement is severely restricted in the desert, which also has a L.E. of 15%. Furthermore, creatures like Slade, Kiwi, and Gerhalt (when promoted) are not hampered by different terrain, even though the L.E. may be anywhere from 0% to 30%. What land effect actually does is to increase the characters defense. For example, if Bowie has a DEF of 10 and he is standing on a path (which has a L.E. of 0%), his defense is increased by 0%, and so it remains at 10. If he walks over to a grassy or sandy area (which both have L.E. of 15%), his defense increases by 15%, so his DEF is now 11.5. Likewise, if he is standing in weeds, shrubs, trees, or rocks, the L.E. is 30%, giving him a DEF of 13. Flyers (like Peter and PGKTs) cannot "hide" among the trees, etc. which is why their L.E. is always 0%, and therefore their DEF is never augmented (except for Boost, of course). So, the best strategy for using L.E. to your advantage is to move weak or near death characters just inside the bushes, trees, etc., and never let anyone stand on the path. Also, since L.E. applies equally to your enemies, try to attack them when they are standing in grass, sand, or especially when they are standing on the path. From: Zor There is a difference between 'flying' and 'hovering' characters. Flying characters ignore all terrain and always have a Land Effect (ie Defense Bonus) of 0%. In addition, they can pass over high mountains. Hovering characters, however, do get terrain bonus (Kiwi is an example of such a character, after promotion). They can move freely through every type of terrain and can hover over water, but they CANNOT pass high mountains and certain other obstacles. From: Sashanan It's not a race so don't be afraid to take your time to plan ahead, it could save your life. Always stock up well on healing seeds whenever possible. There are times where you can't get to a store for several battles without having to retrace your steps back a long way. At the start of a battle don't move characters with a high movement range out too far. Besides the fact that they're more likely to get attacked (and die) sooner, the other characters will not be able to catch up very fast and will probably miss half the battle, if not more! If there is more than one route to take during a battle, divide up your force equally. A Mage on each side, an Archer each side, a Knight, etc. Even if there doesn't seem to be as many monsters down one way, don't forget that more could appear or one might be particularly difficult. They'll all meet up at the end anyway. If you're not certain what to do on your next move, save game and restart. If your plan doesn't work, simply reset and try again! If you're fighting a Greater Devil, the best way to go about it is to kill off all the other monsters first. Then surround him/her on all four sides with characters that have a high defence and reasonable attack (a high agility can help too - cast a boost if you can). Keep all the others far away to avoid the spells, and when one of the four around the Devil needs healing, move a healer nearby to do so. If one dies, then it is very important to replace them right away, the last thing you need is a Devil running all over the battlefield! Above all remember to have fun! Shout encouragement at your team if it helps, taunt the enemy! Really get into the game and there'll be no stopping you. If you become the character you'll understand the game better. Sounds crazy? It works for me! Wait until a monster comes to attack you, then surround him and use magic on him, and not charge up on him the first chance you get with a character with large movement because you are more likely to get killed that way. From: Divineno99@aol.com :::::: General Tips :::::: Search anything that looks a bit different, especially bookshelves and vases. Sometimes you have to select search using the A button, not just pressing the C button. It doesn't hurt to be social: talk to everyone, you never know what you might pick up or who you might meet! Anything that has a nasty name (ie: Dark..., Black..., Evil...) is more than likely to curse you if you equip it. However, if you keep it you can use it in battle, usually causing some fairly powerful spell. Take notes if you like. It can be very frustrating if you forget something important that's been said. To gain levels quickly, have your healers cast Aura and Heal spells as often as possible, even if the affected character is on full health. That's a guaranteed 10-30 exp and can give some very high level Master Monks! You can also replay battles as many times as you like to gain experience. DON'T promote your characters as soon as you can, when returning from Creed's mansion (after being shrinked and all) go to the fairy woods special stage and train your characters (with the mist demon, so be careful) until they reach level 40 (the maximium level) them promote them, so they will MUCH stronger than they would if you had promoted them right away. From: phoenix_angel@yahoo.com Hello there...I have a trick for achieving the best possible fair level for any character you want...(This could be considered cheating by some, but there's no special trick)...On the turn right before the desired character is to go up a level (such as 99 experience and a monster right next to you), quit from the battle and reset the game. Then, start up your game and fight, to go up a level. If, for example, Kiwi gets 1 attack, 1 defense, and 1 agility, or any other bad level-up, you could reset it and get another level where he might get a 1 HP, 2 attack, 1 defense, and 1 agility. I suggest using this trick exclusively on Bowie and Kiwi because sometimes it takes several tries to get a good level increase. If you don't understand the instructions, just email me back and I will clarify. From: FishWazin@aol.com i found the easy way to use the fairy woods special stage to get fast level ups. for healers w/ aura + boost spells, just place your party into the ideal formation for maximum coverage and cast them like crazy. for fighters, you have to actually enter the woods, with two filers. monsters will only appear if the spot they will occupy doesn't have something blocking it, or if they're already there. so what i do is have a flier (Peter) block the spot where the mist demon appears, and then move the party around to just keep on killing the lesser demon. when the monster begins to give less xp, just block their spot and move deeper into the woods. i found that first lesser demon, the two center mist demons, a harpy, a dark madam, and an orc lord all get regenerated. i've managed to get everyone up to level 40 BEFORE promotion, and then up to level 22 before the mist demons start giving only about 20xp when killed. hope this helps others, cuz i wish i figured this out earlier. From: Lee Dalope I have a practically foolproof way to gain experience quickly and easily. Two words: Protect Ring. You really only need one for my trick to work, but if you want to return to the battle on the way to Creeds, which is probably worth more in the long run, feel free. And now, the trick. I realized that by using the Protect Ring on a crowd of five people at the most, the effect is that of a Boost level 1, which grants the caster, usually of a clerical class, 25 exp maximum. Whenever say, Zynk uses it: same effect. The only drawback is that eventually the rings will crack, which is why I think its wise to reset the game before using the ring. With the config code, as you know, you can make the Dark Maiden drop the Protect Ring over and over again, until the cows come home, which they won't because apparently people don't eat beef in Shining Force 2. Boost level 2 is also an inexpensive way to raise Karna's or Sheela's levels at a rapid pace, without the downside of cracking rings. But like I said, theres a way to get around that, which is simply save the game before you use it. The most ideal place to do this without using the config mode code is the battle against Zeon. After defeating all the enemies, simply stay from his demonic halitosis, and charge up. I had Kazin shoot up fifty levels in that battle. The reason why I say this is the best battle to do that in is because if you save and reset, depending on whether or not the ring cracks, you don't really need the config code, which can be death on cold thumbs. Attaining level ninety-nine characters is virtually an inescapable prospect using my method. I just hope I didn't cover it in too much doubletalk for you to understand, no offense of course. It removes a curse or poison from a person. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 14. COMBAT OPTIONS I'm not gonna bother with all the heroic talk before this section, because it's of very little use :) The area your player can move in will flash. Move him with the D-pad, then press A or C to get these options: i) Attack Obvious really! A flashing area will appear where you can attack. If there is more than one monster, you have to choose which one to go for. ii) Item Select the item you want to use and whom you will use it on (within the allowed area) iii) Stay Leave your character on that spot until his next turn. iv) Magic Use a magic spell. Rather like using an item. I'll explain them later on. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 15. SPECIAL COMBAT OPTIONS Before your character moves, press B and either select (with A) an enemy, one of your team-mates or a piece of land, with the white brackets. As yet I have not tried them (I don't have the right control pad) I cannot give you assistance of any kind with them. Remember, I didn't discover these, and all credit goes to Mark for them. If you have trouble with them, you can mail him (not me, I'm clueless!). :::::: The Codes :::::: These are exactly as he gave me them, so don't mail me about any typos! BTW: I've heard from a couple of people that it's possible to do the codes without the programmable controller, but only the Battle Options and Battle Select ones. Apparently, you just need to press the buttons really fast, but it can take up to 15 minutes to get it working. I've found out the code I forgot plus some other things (such as walk on anything). I've decided to send all the members of Moogiechat a copy. Please spread this around to people who want it. Thanks. To use these codes you need an accessory for your Genesis (a special controller or something like that) that will allow you to program buttons in certain order (I use a "Power Plug", but you can probably use any special controller or accessory). When you do this you usually have to designate a button the one to be programmed. For an example say that you want to program in: UP, RIGHT, LEFT, DOWN, B, C. You would program that in to any button, let's say "C". Then when ever you pressed "C" your accessory would put in the thing you programmed (UP, RIGHT, LEFT, DOWN, B, C) instead of "C". Once that's done you have to put "C" on turbo (Turbo is a command on accessories of Genesis that allow the button to be repeated very fast.), so your accessory will enter UP, RIGHT, LEFT, DOWN, B, C repeatedly very fast. So then you just have to hold down "C" and the thing that you programmed in (UP, RIGHT, LEFT, DOWN, B, C) will go very fast and repeatedly. Just for you people who don't know what a fanfare is, it's the noise that happens when you put the configuration code in, but it sounds evil. Also, I have the American version so I can't verify the code for the other versions (it should still work, so e-mail me if something goes wrong). 1) Battle Options: This first code allows you to do the configuration code, walk on anything (except rivers), attack any character, use any spell, use any item, shows surrounding enemies, makes characters explode, shows secret messages, and changes all movements (all of these are ONLY battle options, except for the configuration code and the walk on anything code): Okay, first of all program into your controller: UP, RIGHT, LEFT, DOWN, B, C. Then put the button that you designated to hold the code on turbo. Reset the Genisis (megadrive). Immediatly after you reset the Genesis (the screen is black) hold down the button that you designated to be the one with the code. When the Sega logo appears you should hear an evil fanfare. Now let go of the button. Then you can do the last part of the configuration code if you want to (hold down C & START when you select your quest). Go to a battle and choose the attack or magic option. When you're able to move the cursor around to choose somebody, hold down START and press A. A little box should come up in the upper right corner. Then you can change the numbers in the box. The game will freeze if you press "B" anytime the numbers are in the corner and sometimes (but not often) your character will lose their weapon -MAKE SURE EVERYBODY HAS THEIR WEAPONS BEFORE SAVING. When you're out of the battle you can walk on anything except rivers if you hold down "B" (this allows you to do plenty of things such as get those treasure chests in the Prism Flower Battle {valkerie} and outside Mitula's Shrine {shining ball}). 0=attack any character: Once you select this more numbers will come up (0 and 159). Here are the characters numbers: 0-Bowie 1-Sarah 2-Chester 3-Jaha 4-Kazin 5-Slade 6-Kiwi 7-Peter 8-May 9-Gerhalt 10-Luke 11-Rohde 12-Rick 13-Elric 14-Erik 15-Karna 16-Randolf 17-Tyrin 18-Janet 19-Higins 20-Skreech 21-Taya 22-Frayja 23-Jaro 24-Gyan 25-Sheela 26-Zynk 27-Chaz 28-Lemon 29-Claude 128-Boss of the battle The enemies numbers vary and the game will freeze if you select a number which no one occupies. 1=Cast any spell on any character: Once you select this more numbers will come up (1-4): these signify the level of the spell. After you select one of those numbers, more numbers will come up (0-42): these are all the spells. After you chose the spell, more numbers will come up (0-159): these are the character numbers again. I just listed the characters numbers above, the spell level is obvious (1,2,3, or 4). Here are the numbers of the spells and what each on does. 0-Heal (heals one person) 1-Aura (heals multiple people) 2-Detox (cures people) 3-Boost (Defence and agility are raised) 4-Slow (Defence and agility are decreased) 5-Attack (Attack raised) 6-Dispel (makes person unable to perform spells) 7-Muddle (confuses enemy) 8-Desoul (instantly kills enemy) 9-Sleep (puts opponent to sleep) 10-Egress (escapes from battle) 11-Blaze (fire attack) 12-Freeze (ice attack) 13-Bolt (lightning attack) 14-Blast (air attack) 15-Demon Smile (absorbs magic points) 16-Healin (Heals one person) 17-Belch out flames (self explanitory-weak version) 18-Blew out a snowstorm (self explanitory) 19-Demon Breath (Zeon's magic) 20-Power (attack boosted permenantly) 21-Guard (defence boosted permenantly) 22-Speed (agility boosted permenantly) 23-Idaten (movement range increased permenantly) 24-Health (hit points raised permentantly) 25-B. Ball (fire attack) 38-Brezad (ice attack) 39-Thunder (lightning attack) 40-Aqua Breath (bubble attack) 41-Belch out flames (self explanitory-strong version) 42-Shine (recovers magic points) If you select a level of a spell that doesn't exist (eg level 4 DAO) a fairy will come and attack the enemy instead. 2=Use any item on any character: Once you select this, more numbers will come up (0-127): these are the items. After you choose your item, more numbers will come up (0-159): these are the characters. After you choose your character, more numbers will come up (0-3): I have no idea what these numbers (0-3) do. You know the characters from before so here are all the items and what they do: 0-Medical herb (heal's one person) 1-Healing seed (heal's one person) 2-Healing drop (heal's one person) 3-Antidote (cures poison) 4-Angel wing (escapes from battle) 5-Fairy powder (cures poison, sleep, etc.) 6-Healing water (heal's one person) 7-Fairy tear (recovers magic points) 8-Healing rain (Heals everybody) 9-Power water (attack boosted permenantly) 10-Protect milk (defence boosted permenantly) 11-Quick chicken (agility boosted permenantly) 12-Running pimento (movement range increased permenantly) 13-Cheerful bread (hit points increased permenantly) 14-Bright honey (magic points increased permenantly) 15-Brave apple (level increased permenantly) 16-Shining ball (fire attack) 17-Blizzard (ice attack) 18-Holy thunder (super attack) 19-Power ring (attack boosted) 20-Protect ring (agility, defence boosted) 21-Quick ring (no effect) 22-Running ring (no effect) 23-White ring (aura 2) 24-Black ring (blaze 2) 25-Evil ring (bolt 2) 26-Leather glove (no effect) 27-Power glove (no effect) 28-Brass knuckles (no effect) 29-Iron knuckles (no effect) 30-Misty knuckles (drain's magic points) 31-Giant knuckles (muddle 1) 32-Evil knuckles (no effect) 33-Short axe (no effect) 34-Hand axe (no effect) 35-Middle axe (no effect) 36-Power axe (no effect) 37-Battle axe (no effect) 38-Large axe (no effect) 39-Great axe (no effect) 40-Heat axe (blaze 2) 41-Atlas axe (blaze 3) 42-Ground axe (no effect) 43-Rune axe (detox 1) 44-Evil axe (no effect) 45-Wooden arrow (no effect) 46-Iron arrow (no effect) 47-Steel arrow (no effect) 48-Robin arrow (no effect) 49-Assualt shell (no effect) 50-Great shot (no effect) 51-Nazca Cannon (no effect) 52-Buster shot (no effect) 53-Hyper Cannon (no effect) 54-Grand Cannon (muddle 1) 55-Evil shot (no effect) 56-Wooden stick (no effect) 57-Short sword (no effect) 58-Middle sword (no effect) 59-Long sword (no effect) 60-Steel sword (no effect) 61-Achilles sword (no effect) 62-Broad sword (no effect) 63-Buster sword (no effect) 64-Great sword (no effect) 65-Critical sword (no effect) 66-Battle sword (no effect) 67-Force sword (no effect) 68-Counter sword (no effect) 69-Levanter (blaze 3) 70-Dark sword (desoul 1) 71-Wooden sword (no effect) 72-Short spear (no effect) 73-Bronze lance (no effect) 74-Spear (no effect) 75-Steel lance (no effect) 76-Pwer spear (no effect) 77-Heavy lance (no effect) 78-Javelin (no effect) 79-Chrome lance (no effect) 80-Valkerie (attack boosted) 81-Holy lance (heal 1) 82- Mist javelin (no effect) 83-Halberd (bolt 1) 84-Evil lance (no effect) 85-Wooden rod (no effect) 86-Short rod (no effect) 87-Bronze rod (no effect) 88-Iron rod (no effect) 89-Power stick (no effect) 90-Flail (no effect) 91-Guardian staff (no effect) 92-Indra staff (steals magic points) 93-Mage staff (blaze 2) 94-Wish staff (attack boosted) 95-Great rod (no effect) 96-Supply staff (removes opponents magic points) 97-Holy staff (no effect) 98-Freeze staff (freeze 2) 99-Goddess staff (aura 2) 100-Mystery staff (no effect) 101-Demon rod (steals magic points) 102-Iron rod (blaze 3) 103-Short knife (no effect) 104-Dagger (no effect) 105-Knife (no effect) 106-Thieve's knife (no effect) 107-Katana (no effect) 108-Ninja Katana (no effect) 109-Gisarme (no effect) 110-Taros sword (bolt 2) 111-Right of hope (restores everybody's magic points) 112-Wooden panel (no effect) 113-Sky orb (no effect) 114-Cannon (no effect) 115-Dry stone (no effect) 116-Dinamite (no effect) 117-Arm of golem (no effect) 118-Pegasus wing (no effect) 119-Warrior pride (no effect) 120-Silver tank (no effect) 121-Secret book (no effect) 122-Vigor ball (no effect) 123-Mithral (no effect) 124-Life ring (no effect) 125-Cotton balloon (no effect) 126-Chirrup sandels (no effect) 127-Empty (no effect) 3=shows images of surrounding enemies (this one is self-explanitory) 4=make characters explode: It makes the character explode and injures characters surrounding the target 5=special message (self-explanitory) 6=Prism Laser: Affects movement. You can save whenever you want using these codes. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) Battle Select: Okay, first of all program into your controller UP, DOWN, UP, DOWN, LEFT, RIGHT, LEFT, RIGHT, UP, RIGHT, DOWN, LEFT, B, C, B, C, B, C. Then put the button you designated to be the one containing the code on turbo. Reset the Genisis. Immediatly hold down the button that contains the turboed code (the screen is black). When the Sega logo appears you should hear an evil fanfare. Release the button. The screen will turn black with a blue square contaning numbers in the top right corner (0-49). THIS PART IS OPTIONAL: IF YOU WANT PEOPLE TO GO AUTOMATICALLY UP LEVELS PRESS BE AND THEN TAP "A". PRESS "B" TO CONTINUE. After you enter a number, another blue square with numbers will appear (0-1). After you choose a number here, another blue square with numbers will appear (0-999/0-1). After you chose your numbers you will start at a battle. I know that the first blue square with numbers (0-49) is the battles. I have no idea what the other one's do. You start with all of the characters when you do this code. Here are the battles: 0-Secret boss battle 1-Gizmo battle 2-Battle from Granseal to Yeel 3-Battle from Yeel to Hawel's house 4-Battle with first encounter of Lemon 5-Battle to get jewel of light 6-Battle from Galam to Granseal 7-Battle with King Galam (first encounter) 8-Battle to save trapped man 9-Battle from the new Granseal to Ribble 10-Battle with power ring 11-Battle in Cavern of Darkness (Hodgoblin) 12-Battle after Oddler is introduced (to Bedoe) 13-Battle after exiting from Bedeo (Gerhalt joins here) 14-Battle to ruins where Petro's grandfather lives 15-Battle in shrine south of Ribble 16-Battle againt Kraken 17-Battle to Taros's shrine 18-Battle againt Taros 19-Battle from the Elven Village to the pond where Elric is. 20-Battle where you save Elric 21-Battle in Devil's Tail 22-Chestboard battle 23-Battle against Willard 24-Battle right before Rohde joins 25-Battle in cave between South and North Parmecia 26-Battle where you meet Gesph and Higins 27-First battle at the place where Jaro joins 28-Battle at bridge, where you meet Cameela 29-Battle in front of Mitula's Shrine 30-Battle against Zalbard 31-Battle in Palacon village, meet Geshp again 32-Battle where you get Jaro 33-Battle in Moun 34-Battle against Cameela 35-First battle after returned to Grans Island 36-Battle with prism flowers 37-Battle against Red Baron 38-Battle against Geshp 39-battle where Hydra wants to defeat you to become a greater devil 40-Battle against Odd Eye 41-Battle up the tower 42-Battle against King Galam (2nd encounter) 43-Battle against Zeon 44-Secret battle in forest 45-Empty 46-Empty 47-Empty 48-Empty 49-Empty When you're in a battle you can do all the battle options from the first code (the one at the top of the page). In battle select if you cast egress you will come to the chruch commands (cure, raise, promote, save), DO NOT SAVE; it will save mess up the game in the first position. After that if you exit the chuch commands you will be able to choose a shop number (0-100). These are the shops in the game plus other bonus shops that contain everything in the game, if you choose a number that doesn't exist, the Genesis will freeze. After that the normal commands will come up (member, magic, item, search). After you exit from those, the caravan commands will come up (join, depot, item, status). If you exit the caravan commands, you will be able to choose a battle again. Sometimes you'll be able to press "B" again here and tap "A" again (when it doesn't work the second time around it won't do anything or your Genesis will freeze). ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) Start anywhere in the game: Okay, first of all program into the controller UP, UP, DOWN, DOWN, LEFT, RIGHT, UP, RIGHT, DOWN, LEFT, B, C, C, B, B, A, A, B. Then put the button that you designated to be the one with the code on turbo. Reset the genisis. Immediatly hold down the button that you designated to be the one with the code (the screen is black). When the Sega logo appears you should hear an evil fanfare. Release the button. The screen will turn black with a blue square contaning numbers in the top right corner (0-56). After you enter a number another blue square with numbers will appear (0-999/0-1). Select one of those numbers and you will start your quest in the middle of the game. I'm don't know how the numbers operate, they just do. Also, the only character you start the game with is Bowie. You can walk over anything by holding down "B" as youy move. If you die, you'll either start where you started with the code, or you'll be transported to an unwalkable territory outside Mitula's Shrine. I you get transported to Mitula's Shrine just hold down "B" and walk to land. In battles, you can use the Battle Options listed at the top of the page. You can save here, but it will record over the game in the first position. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) Control the evade, heavy attack, double attack, and counter attack: This one just happens by itself about 40% of the time that you put in the first code I told you about. What will happen is right before your about to attack/use magic, those "yes or no heads" appear. The first one that appears controls evade. The second one that appears controls heavy attacks. The third one that appears controls double attacks. And finally the fourth one that appears controls counter attacks. Finally, that's all the codes. If you find out something that I don't know how to do (what 0-3 means in the item select, what B. Rock does, what Laser does, what Powder does, and what Fairy Powder does, how the numbers operate in the start anywhere code, what the numbers in the second two squares of the battle select code do, anything secrets you find within these codes), please let me know. Please give me credit for this. You also might be able to do these codes without the special accessories. I've tried to find out how, but I couldn't. Note: I didn't say you CAN I said you MIGHT be able to do them without specail accessories. You're welcome. Secret Villages_______________________________________________________ As far as I know, there are only two secret villages: the Dwarven Town on Grans Island, and the Elven Town in South Parmecia. Neither of these are very difficult to reach. :::::: The Elven Town :::::: After you get the Caravan, you travel along the dried up river to reach Creed. As you come off the river, there is the little cave with the sick dwarf. To the left of this is a clump of bushes. One square of this is a lot lighter, this is where the village is. To the east side of the village is a game-within-the-game. It's basically a battle with one main monster who creates more monsters. Kill the main one and the battle ends. Your time to complete the fight is recorded and added to the list of times. It's tough to beat, but it's good for a laugh. To get there, go clockwise around the outside of the houses and then when you've got the mithril in the bottom-right, follow the 2-hole clearing through to the right and you're there. There is also a quicker route to get to it, which can be seen in a map on my site at http://shining.zophar.net/shf2/ :::::: The Dwarven Town :::::: To get into this one, you need the Dry Stone. At one point in the river, north of Galam, there is an odd-looking section, where the river is 'dented' in both sides: use the Dry Stone here. The dwarves here can use your Mithril (for a fee of 5000G) to make you some fairly impressive weapons! ______________________________________________________________________________ _____v. Misc Secrets__________________________________________________________ Some of these cheats will make you wish you had a Japanese Version of the game! Well, now you can... just have a look at the ROMs & Emulation Page on my site to download a copy. ::::::: Reduce Spell Damage :::::: (Japanese Version Only) Press down, right, left, up & then down again when the enemy starts to use the magic attack. It will reduce the magic attack by 90% on Peter and 80% on the others. :::::: Increase Stats by 250 :::::: (Japanese Version Only) You must have 99 experience points, then get muddled by LV2 Muddle, because LV 1 only decreases accuracy, and 2 makes you crazy. Then, the character must attack one of your own guys, and HIT (not miss. I suggest that you "Quit" just after being muddled, then try until it hits.) then you'll get a new level, and stats will increase by 250! :::::: Avoid all Attacks :::::: (Japanese Version Only) When your character is being attacked, press Right and C. The enemy will get 2 attacks and you will counter, but they will all miss. :::::: Fairy Woods Bonus Stage :::::: To the east side of the Elven Village is a game-within-the-game. The route is different in the Japanese version of the game. :::::: Secret Final Battle :::::: After the battle against Zeon, when you've completed the game, watch the end sequence and wait for the last screen, a picture of the two jewels. Wait about 5 mins after this, and a box will appear that says 'And more...' ...press C and you'll be whisked away to a secret battle, where you'll have to kill all the Greater Devils, Zeon and a few other characters. If you look at the map of this battle, you'll see that it's in the shape of Sonic the Hedgehog! ============================================================================== > > 8. SirFil Without you, I'd never have found the Pegasus Wing, and might not have even considered making a Shining Force 2 website. Thanks for your support and friendship over the years man, you're a star! Dragonfire, Classicgaming and Zophar's Domain My site moved around a lot over the years, but these are the places it lived longest. Lee Corny, I know, but my bloke deserves a mention, for putting up with me spending hours in front of my PC typing this thing up, and helping me with my collection - and life in general. Thanks love! Of course I'd also like to thank Sega, Climax and Camelot for all their work on the series, without which none of these FAQs would exist! Finally, thanks to everyone who has visited and contributed to my site over the last 5 years.
