It's not going to last long, the game isn't very complex, but then that's the beauty of it. Knowledge of the World Cup of 1990 isn't needed to play this game, heck knowledge of football in general won't help squat! ...but it will make me like you more. Ok on to the action! If you need to contact me reguarding this FAQ my email is isschamp@lycos.co.uk -Contents- Version History Controls Play modes Team Guide Tactics FAQ Thanks -VERSION HISTORY- v.0.1 - 25/08/02 - The first one! Everything new! -CONTROLS- With the ball, Direction Stick - Run with the ball A Button - Low Kick B Button - High Kick (Overhead kick & Diving header if the ball is in the air) Without the ball, Direction Stick - Run A Button - Slide Tackle B Button - Jump Goalkeeper, Direction Stick - Run A Button - Dive B Button - Jump I told you it wasn't very complex! -PLAY MODES- There are two play modes to WC90, one player and two player. The one player consists of one and a half minute matches against the Computer, you must guide your team to the final by beating all the other teams. Once you've done that you're the World Champions! Of course its a lot harder then it sounds. The two player mode consists of a 3 minute match against a friend (or foe!) the most goals wins, and unlike other some other arcade games it end for both players. You can continue your duel by putting some more change. -TEAM GUIDE- They are listed in the order they appear listed in the game. Each team is exactly the same, the order in which you play them against the computer is random. Japan - JPN - White tops with red shorts. United States of America - USA - Blue tops with purple shorts. England - ENG - Orange tops with white shorts. Argentina - ARG - White tops with blue shorts. Brazil - BRA - Yellow tops with green shorts. Germany - GER - Green tops with yellow shorts. USSR - USR - Black tops with white shorts. Italy - ITA - Red tops with blue shorts. -TACTICS- Defending & Goalkeeping Defending is quite difficult to get to grips with, the computers main fault is that it switches the player to the goal keeper quite early on in the opponents attack and you don't expect it can mean you run goal keeper way out of position leaving an open goal. Mastering the switch to the goal keeper is key. The goalkeeper can only be moved inside the 6 yard area, which has its good and bad points, for one it means your keeper can't get too out of position but it is annoying when their stiker is just out of reach. Saying that though you can dive outside the 6 yard box, and when the ball is within your grasp go for it! It will make the other side think twice to come so close. Once you are the keeper just keep yourself inbetween the ball and the goal, always run out to narrow the angle, don't worry about being lobbed as you can always jump (B Button) and you'll never be caught out. Keepers cannot catch the ball when jumping, but the ball nearly always falls to a fellow defender, so be ready to boot it up safty. The keeper does automatically get the ball when it is close but diving is still a skill which can be learnt. The keeper does move very quick compared to the rest of the players, so it does take a little more time to get to grips with him. Midfield and General Tactics When clearing the ball upfield, use the high kick (B button) it is much safer. Getting the ball into scoring positions is the main goal of the midfield players, you can do this the easy way, passing, or the hard way, running with the ball. It is quite easy to just kick the ball from one player to another until it gets to your main striker, however this tactic usually leaves him with little chance to score. The best idea is to go down the wings, either using the low kick to a wide player or making a run. Once you've got it wide you should be able to get to the edge of the opponents penalty area. Goal Scoring There are quite a few ways to score, however I've yet to find a way which is 100% successful, which I guess is a good thing as it would make the game dull if you could score every time. - "The Long Ball" The most simple way of scoring is to lob the ball into the box, hope it gets to your striker and then shoot it into the left or right side of goal. The ball into the box can either be a diagnal one or one straight from midfield, you want your striker to be standing on the penalty spot. If the ball is good you can do a overhead kick or diving header - B when the ball is in the air at the right hight - which will give you more chance to score. This tactic is the staple of most games, it works well in early matches but not so well in later ones. - "The Cross" If you get the ball to the wing you can run close to the touchline (where the ball goes out of play) and hope to cross it over the goal keeper to a player on the other side of the goal to tap it in. Don't get too close to the goal or your player will perform a shot rather than a cross, also you if you don't time it right the keeper can get the ball. The most annoying thing (for the player) about this tactic is that the player who recives the ball takes an age to shoot! The goalkeeper with his speed can usually recover in time to snatch the ball from the stikers feet. - "The Lob" You need to get your striker just inside the penalty area where the small "D" touches the box, from here do a diagnoal B shot in the opposide corner (so if your at the top shoot down, and shoot up if your at the bottom), this will lob the keeper and look quite impressive. The good thing about this type of shot is that if the keeper does get it he can only punch it away, which can give you a chance to regain possesion quickly for another chance to score. It only scores against the computer in the early rounds and does take some practice to know when and where to shoot. This is a goal of seasoned player and does work im 2 player, depending on your opponents skill. - "The tap in" more to do with luck than skill, if you can cross/lob the ball into the box your player might get to the ball just before the keeper does inside the six yard box, the keeper will be on the floor as he has missed his dive for the ball and you should have an open net to score. The only reason I put this tactic in is because when you do get a tap in it can sometimes be quicker to just walk it in then try to shoot it which can give the goalkeeper time to recover. Scoring like this can be quite an embarrassment for your opponent. There are a few more ways to score, the run and shot, but they are either too difficult to explain, too luck based or I just don't know about it. If you have any good tactics for me to try please email (isschamp@lycos.co.uk) them, I will give full credit and a packet of chewits if I decide to use them in this FAQ. -FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS- If you do have a question, either game related or based on the real WC of 1990 feel free to email me. Q. Why on earth did you write an FAQ for a game over 12 years old? A. Boredom was the main reason. Although I've been playing the game on and off since it was made I only just recently rediscovered it through the magic of the internet *cough* hehe. This game is really good and it didn't have either an FAQ or Review, I thought it could do with something as it a game I enjoyed in my mispent youth, it is also quite an easy game to write an FAQ for, which is good for someone who dislikes hard things! Q. Who made this game? A. Tecmo of Japan released this game in 1989, a year before the World Cup started in Italy. Tecmo went on to produce the smash hit Dead or Alive. Q. Are there any cheats or secrets? A. None that I know of. It's not the type of game to have any. Q. Why are Japan in the game if they weren't in the World Cup? A. I guess they felt if it didn't have Japan it would not be as successful in their home market. Q. Why are all the teams kits incorrect? A. I don't know! It could laziness on the developers part or to make the teams stand out from each other - no team has a second kit. It still doesn't explain why England are in orange! Q. What happens when you win? A. That would be telling ;) Q. Who won the World Cup in 1990? A. Not England. -THANKS- Epoteker - He put me in his Crystal Warriors FAQ (go read it!) so I'm returning the favour.
