BATTLE ROBOT RETSUDEN Super NES/Super Famicom FAQ v.01 12.27.99 by Finn McKenty finn@medius.net http://finn.medius.net you can also join my Yahoo fan club at http://clubs.yahoo.com/clubs/finniscool - it's where all the cool grindcore kids hang out. Do whatever you want with this file. Distribute, copy, give me credit or don't... I don't really care :) This file is written in sloppy American english, if it doesn't make sense to you, sorry. I would first like to say that this isn't really much of a walkthrough since I haven't figured out a lot of the game, but it will at least give you a basic idea of how to play the game. Battle Robot Retsuden (BRR) is kind of part of the Super Robot Taisen series, a popular Japanese franchise created by Bandai and Winkysoft. If you're familiar with the SRT series, you should be able to play BRR pretty easily. Here is the way it works: Once you start the game, there's some dialog. Then you switch to an isometric-perspective battle scene. In the battle scene, you control one robot (there may be a way to directly control the rest... not sure on that yet). You have four options: move, communicate with Amy on your ship, issue orders, and end turn. Movement is in hexes. Some characters can move once in a turn, some twice, and I'm guessing later in the game even more than that. Also, it matters which way you are facing. Obviously, getting attacked from behind causes more damage than getting attacked from the front. When you move, select the hex you want to move into and press Y. Then press L or R to rotate left or right. When you're done, press Y again. Then you'll be back at the main menu. You can then attack, move again, or do whatever. Attacking is pretty straightforward. You choose attack (the menu option that looks like it has a little star in it), then choose which weapon you want to use. The weapons screen lists the weapons by name, range, damage and type (gun, beam, physical- you can tell by the icon next to it what kind of weapon it is). Then you choose your target- it can be kind of tricky to get in the right position to attack with some of the ranged weapons, you'll see what I mean. Sometimes you have to move a few hexes away in order to use some of the more powerful, long-range weapons. When you have picked your target, press Y and it'll switch to a cool first-person battle scene where you attack and it shows how much damage you do and all that. Pretty easy. Oh, and if you want to defend, just choose the shield as your weapon (not all units have a shield). If you choose the "give orders" command, there's a list of the pilots that looks like this (I'm going to write it in English, you'll have to use your imagination a little): Pilot Action Target -- -- -- Amuro: Attack Hora Daba: Attack Shou Zoroshi: Defend Hora Pressing X (I think) will cycle through these options. The best I can tell you is that Attack looks like it has a little star in it and defend doesn't, and there's another option I can't read. You'll just have to pay attention to figure out what your pilots' names and enemies' names look like. So that's how you give orders- choose the pilot, his actions, and the target. There might be a way to directly control each pilot, I'm not too sure on that. There's a little status bar at the top of the screen that tells your pilot's name, what robot they're in, how many attacks they have left (there's a little icon) and how many moves they have left. After you've run out of attacks/moves, or you don't feel like using them up, select end turn (the bottom option) and the enemy will attack, move and do whatever. Then it's your turn again. After you've completed your first battle, there's some more dialog, and you're in an overhead "world map" kind of thing. You can choose one of two options: communicate with Amy. I don't know enough Japanese to tell what the options are when you're talking to Amy. One of them has something to do with moving, another is something about your pilots. The other option is to go to the next area. It's the one on the bottom. Choose that one and you're on to the next battle. After I think four battles (I think this is some kind of "get to know the pilots" training exercise...) you have a boss battle. There's some dialog and you fight Hora and some other guy who's name I forget. It's pretty easy. After that, you're back in the overhead view. The top option, which was greyed out before, is now available. The menu for your main ship is something close to this: Split Forces Communicate Done (go to next group) Select Split Forces and divide your guys up. I chose Zoroshi (the fat kid) and Shou, although I have no idea whether this was a good idea or not. After that, choose Done and you'll see that you have two forces on the map- your main ship and a mecha head, representing the force you just split off. You'll now be in control of that force. Choose Communicate, and choose the first option (I think) which is Move. Move your smaller force to the end of the line (a red dot) and you're going to fight a pretty easy boss. You can figure out how to beat him. After that, you have to move on to the next mission. I didn't really know what to do, so I just kept skipping turns until the top option in Amuro's menu was available, then i moved to the red dot at the end of the line. There, obviously, you fight. Win the fight, an enemy ship appears, there's some dialog, and you go on to the next level. In the next level, the first three battles are real easy- a bunch of those wimpy robots that look like trucks, you don't need any help on this one. Something I did notice, though, is that Shou's (the guy that flys) beam rifle attacks seem to miss almost every time, so I'd recommend getting close in, using your sword, then backing off (if you need to... many times you'll destroy them in one hit). This is as far as I've gotten- when I get more time I'll play some more and update this thing. Until then, this will hopefully help you out a little. If you have questions or you need to correct me or whatever, please email me at finn@medius.net. QUICK MENU REFERENCE Sometimes these menus are a little different than what I have here- I don't understand why yet. So bear with me on this one. Main Battle Menu -- Move/Attack Give Orders Call Amy Done World Menu for the Captain Guy -- Divide Troops Call Amy Done (move next group) World Menu for Mission Leader (When you split your troops, this is the menu the new force will use) -- Move ?? Call Amy Done Amy's Menu -- ?? Get Pilot Info Upgrade Unit Upgrade Weapon Save? Exit? POWERING UP After you beat the first "level" (the valley you start in), call Amy from the world map. Choose the second (or maybe third) option. The screen will look vaugely like this (I've roughly translated it): Level ups: 004/004 Enhancements: 0300/0300 SP ?? 00/00 Amuro 3400/3400 Daba 2700/2700 Zoroshi 2200/2200 Anyway, select the top option, level up and press Y. Then select the character you want to "apply" the level up to- Zoroshi is probably a good choice, since he kind of sucks. Press Y again and he'll be levelled up. Do this again until you're out of level ups. Enhancements are pretty much the same- they're the second option- they do things like give you more attacks or moves per turn. Just select enhancements then the unit you want to apply it to.
