Taekwon-do FAQ Version 1.00 by Handy Tanudjaja November 16, 1998 ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- TABLE OF CONTENTS 1. Introduction 2. Title Screen 3. The characters 4. The EDIT mode guide 5. The Fight 6. Contacts ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1. Introduction Hi. This is my first FAQ, so it may look a bit crappy. Sorry about that. Taekwondo is a SNES game by Human Entertainment. The game is simply about the Taekwondo fighting, and it is using tournament rules. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2. Title Screen Okay, the selection isn't actually in the title screen. After you choose the language, either japanese or korean (I prefer Japanese, at least I can read the Katakana.), you get to choose six options. The options are : TOURNAMENT MODE Or also called Story Mode. This mode allows you to participate in four tournaments. There's a sub-menu inside this mode. They are : NORMAL MODE Normal mode requires you to select from the 19 Taekwondo fighters, and proceed in the four tournaments. EDIT MODE Edit mode enables you to create your own Taekwondo fighter. This mode will be explained in its own section. PASSWORD Taekwon-do does not have a savegame feature. Instead, it uses a password system to save your progress (much like Willow in NES). V.S. MODE Self explanatory. There are four options inside : V.S. CPU Fights against Computer Controlled Fighter. V.S. 2P Fights against player 2. PASSWORD If you have completed the tournament mode using the edit mode, you can use the password here to play with the fighter you created. OPTION Sets the various options of the game. BATTLE MODE This mode allows you to enter a tournament with 3 fighters. It's much like King of Fighters mode, except that this one is using tournament table. There are three options : 1P Go on fighting 3 on 3 alone. 2P Go on fighting 3 on 3 with player 2. OPTION Sets the various options of the game. After selecting three fighters, you must choose which one to go first. There are three options here, the top one is to change orders, the middle one is to cancel selection. The last one, is obviously to start the fight. TAEKWONDO CLASS This mode allows you to fight your instructor. I'm not sure what this mode is about, although the bottom option is free fight . Sorry, I'm no Japanese, so translating the instructor's saying is out of the question. CONTROLS This, of course, sets the controls for the SNES pad. SOUND Sound test. Actually it's music test. Listen to various musics from the game. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3. The characters Taekwon-do has a wide variety of characters. There are 19 Taekwondo Fighters to choose. And there are also 6 type of fighters. KYOJI AT DF SP ST BL TC YERONG AT DF SP ST BL TC WONG AT DF SP ST BL TC ARBEGHT AT DF SP ST BL TC RENNY AT DF SP ST BL TC EDGE AT DF SP ST BL TC FLAY AT DF SP ST BL TC BABBELE AT DF SP ST BL TC YUHJING AT DF SP ST BL TC MIKE AT DF SP ST BL TC KART AT DF SP ST BL TC BLADE AT DF SP ST BL TC DUYILE AT DF SP ST BL TC YAGAMI AT DF SP ST BL TC LEE AT DF SP ST BL TC KAI AT DF SP ST BL TC SHUN AT DF SP ST BL TC ICHIJYO AT DF SP ST BL TC SHO AT DF SP ST BL TC The fighter type : SPEED TYPE tends to be a little weak, and relies on quick movement to attack and counter attack. JUMP TYPE tends to jump around, because usually he's a very balanced fighter. DEFENSE TYPE although not turtling, has a good defense. Attack power will be reduced when fighting this type. SKILL TYPE has variety of moves. His string also usually good. ALLROUND TYPE is a balanced type of fighter. Has good speed, good defense, good everything. POWER TYPE tends to be reckless and powerful. One blow could cause critical hit. This type usually has other weak points. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4. The EDIT mode guide Now, I suppose you would like to build your own fighter, instead of using the ready-made fighters, right? This is your chance. After selecting the EDIT mode, you will be presented with an input box. This is your school's name. Although it's only four letters, if you use Katakana, you can make some cool name like Doragon and Tandaru . Next is to input your name. This time, no japanese letters, only English. After that, you can select your photo by pressing left and right, also you can select the area you're from by pressing up and down. When all is done, you'll be presented with 9 points to distribute between your attributes. The attributes are : AT : Attack. Determines the power of your attack. DF : Defense. Reduces the opponent's attack you receive. SP : Speed. Determines how fast are you moving. ST : Stamina. The lower your stamina, the quicker you became tired. BL : Balance. If your balance is low, you'll easily fall and lose grip. TC : Technique. The higher your technique, the better your attack skills. Okay, you've distributed the 9 points. What? Too low for a good fighter? Don't worry, after each tournament, you'll increase the level, plus additional points to distribute. Now, on to fighting style. There are nine steps to build your fighter. Your instructor will ask you questions regarding what fighting style do you want to use. Pay attention to his examples, and pick the one you like. 1. Select the attack for X button in close range. 2. Select the attack for A button in close range. 3. Select the attack for B button in close range. 4. Select the attack for X button in long range. 5. Select the attack for A button in long range. 6. Select the attack for B button in long range. 7. Select whether you want a Flamingo stance or Taunt . 8. Select whether you want jump block or jump kick. 9. Select your jump kick type, up or forward. After you are finished, you'll fight your instructor. Make him fall once. Then you're on to your first tournament. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5. The Fight You're on the first tournament. Now what? Start by blocking your opponent, wait for him to jump kick, then retaliate. Non standard buttons are : down to forward + B : results in a quick head kick. forward + X or A : this is a quick kick. Use this to retaliate after blocking. forward + B : results in a dash kick. down to forward, back + B : rushing attack. This is a special move, can only be used if your fighter is very very low on stamina . This is very powerful, unfortunately, it can be countered by a quick kick, and also it can be jumped over. You know, this move resembles Kim Kaphwan's Special move from Fatal Fury. forward, forward : dash towards opponent. back, back : dash away from opponent. R : change left foot forward or right foot forward. R and hold : you can move up and down around the mat. The computer sometimes exploits this ability by moving around in a position where you can't touch him. L and hold : Flamingo stance. Y : This button activates your attack string. You won't be able to do attack strings at first if you're using the EDIT mode. Regular fighters have them, though. The attack string seemed to be unique for each fighter. Flamingo Stance : B : does an axe kick. X : does a high kick. A : does a mid kick. Tournament Rules : The standard tournament time is 2 minutes. 1 point is awarded to a successful body hit. 2 points is awarded to a successful head hit. 3 points is awarded to a successful hit when you're jumping. 5 points is awarded if you can knock your opponent down. 5 points is awarded if your opponent walks out from the mat. You lose the fight if : 1. After two minutes, your score is outnumbered by your opponent's. 2. If you're knocked down 5 times. 3. You're knocked out. If you dash back from your opponent twice in a row, you'll receive a warning (boo, chicken! chicken!) and your opponent will receive 5 points. A counter attack happened if you attack your opponent's attacking move. A critical hit happened if you managed to hit your opponent with a clean hit. Be careful with your balance! If you jumps a lot, and somehow, your opponent hits you, you'll be off balance for a little while. Now don't do anything while you're trying to balance yourself. If your opponent attacks while you're trying to balance yourself, you'll fall. If instead your opponent is trying to balance himself, quickly attack him for a quick five points. Fighters with low stamina will tire easily. For example, pick Shun as your fighter. Although you had never received a single hit from your opponent, you'll tire very easily. Therefore, it is important to have high stamina. In the fourth tournament, there will be special bosses. The first one you fight will be Ray . The second one is Luey . The last fight will be against Yuh. You can win by holding up for two minutes, as long as you're sure you get better score than he is. There's also a cheap move, it is by knocking your opponent down five times. Even though he's still strong, if he's downed five times, he lose. That's why sometimes experts of Taekwondo lose a tournament, because of the rules. In the last fight, however, there are no rules. If you notice, Yuh will kick the referee out of the mat, and he'll start beating you up. Then the down counter on the bottom will be replaced with a stamina meter. If one of them reaches zero, you're knocked out. Be careful with this final fighter. He's tough, and when you've managed to get his stamina meter so low, he'll start using rush special over and over again. Don't block it! Jump, or retaliate by kicking him before he reaches you. If you managed to beat him, congratulations! You've finished the game, and you'll receive a password for use in the two player V.S. mode. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6.
