Space Knight Tekkaman Blade An Overly Extensive FAQ for the Surprisingly Simple SNES Game ------------------------------- Revision 2 - 03/30/03 Document and Translations by D-BOY http://www.oakland.edu/~dcsoboda/ ------------------------------------------------------------- CHANGE LOG: ------------------------------------------------------------- Revision 2: Made some edits suggested by Ghideon Zhi to the script. Updated my URL/e-mail info. Revision 1: Initial release ------------------------------------------------------------- TABLE OF CONTENTS: ------------------------------------------------------------- I. Agreement II. Background Story III. Controls IV. Gameplay V. Walkthrough & Translation VI. Codes VII. Credits & Notes ------------------------------------------------------------- I. AGREEMENT ------------------------------------------------------------- This work was created entirely by my. It was designed as a guide for playing the SNES game. One of the critical problems with the SNES game was it's lack of background story for the unfamiliar player. It is very difficult to appreciate the game without an already working knowledge of the Tekkaman Blade series. In my guide I have aimed to fill in that missing information from my own knowledge as well as translate the text that is present in the game. The person who was going to insert this translation into the SNES game gave up. If anyone else wants to, just credit me for it. Suggestions for improvement are quite welcome. You can e-Mail them to me at dcsoboda@oakland.edu. I would hope that this document does generate some input to at least allow for a second version of it. Lastly, do not redistribute this document without my permission. Currently the only websites with permission to house this documents are my website and GameFAQS (located at http://www.gamefaqs.com/). If you see this document at any other site, please e-Mail me and let me know. While I don't think it's a problem anymore, back in the day retailers such as Game Cave were notorious for stealing people's FAQs and packing printed versions of them with games. If you are selling a new or used copy of Tekkaman Blade, please sell it without my guide. ------------------------------------------------------------- II. BACKGROUND STORY: ------------------------------------------------------------- For those who don't know, Tekkkaman Blade was a fairly popular cartoon series that aired in Japan in 1992. The story is set in the distant future in 2300 our time. The year is 192 of the Unified Earth Calendar (192 years after the unification of the planet's counties). It's a dark time and the ministry of defense has constructed the OBS (Orbital Ring System) in outer space 300km off the Earth's surface. Its purpose: to supply power to the earth outside the ozone and serve as a harbor to further exploration into the solar system. Then it happened... the ORS was attacked by unknown alien beings. It was immediately occupied and the battle reached even the earth's surface. The Allied Defense force began funding a new program called "The Space Knights" to deal with this threat. One day while two members of the Space Knights, Kisaragi Aki and Noal, were investigating the alien plants that had begun to grown on Earth, what seemed a comet crashed into the ground nearby. When they investigated they found a young man's body in the crater. He was taken back to headquarters to recover. When he awoke they proceeded to interrogate him about who he was and where he was from. But the man had lost his entire memory. He assaulted Milly, one of the younger members of the Space Knights and beat his way out looking for a space ship to get back up to the orbital ring. He hijacked their ship, the Blue Earth, and took off. Noal gave him the nickname D-BOY since they had no other name to call him and the guy seemed pretty dangerous. Once into space, he escaped out the back of the ship. Noal and Aki figured he was dead but instead, out he came as Tekkaman Blade. Following this he continued to work with the Space Knights. The game seems to start shortly after this part of the story (likely episode 6) as D-BOY enters on Pegas in Stage 1. Pegas was a robot built to boost the power of his Tekk Sett crystal that allows him to change into his Tekkaman form. The crystal was shattered in half during an early battle with Tekkaman Dagger. Some further notes to clarify things (spoilers to later in the game though). The entire Aiba family and some of their friends/relatives were on an exploration ship launched from the OBS a few years before the story starts. The ship was called the Argos. It was sacked by Radam aliens in what looked like an attack. However it was discovered Kengo Aiba, Tekkaman Omega, was already under Radam control at that time and in fact coordinated the attack on their ship. While captured, the crew of the ship was suggested to the Tekk process. Many members were rejected from it. Among them, Shinya, Kengo, Miyuki, and Takaya's father. His father shot the pod that was transforming Takaya into a Tekkaman and dragged his son to an escape pod to jet him out of the ship. It was too late to rescue the others as they were too far through the process. Takaya's father died as a result from being rejected from the Tekk system, the last phase of which implants a Radam parasite into the victim to control their thoughts and make them responsive to Radam command. Here's a quick list of characters mentioned throughout the FAQ and their multiple names (when applicable): Real Name Other Names: Notes: Takaya Aiba Blade, D-BOY Hero of story Aki Kisaragi Member of Space Knights & Takaya's woman :) Noal Sol #2 Member of Space Knights Balzak Asimov Sol #1 Works for defense force before it was destroyed Miyuki Aiba Rapier Takaya's younger sister Shinya Aiba Evil Takaya's identical twin brother Kengo Aiba Omega Takaya and Shinya's older brother Hun Li Sword Kengo's fiancee Goddard Axe Aiba family friend and karate teacher Fritz Van Braun Dagger Shipmate on the Argos Morotoh Lance Shipmate on the Argos Honda Space Knights mechanic Milly Space Knights uhh... what exactly did she do? Chief Freeman Commander & chief of the Space Knights Now you can go turn on the game :) ------------------------------------------------------------- III. CONTROLS: ------------------------------------------------------------- Stages D-Pad: Move Blade up, down, left, or right B: Slash A: Nothing Y: Throws blade like a boomerang X: Voltekker special attack (consumes one of those yellow balls you get from red Tekk Crystal power-ups) START: Pause Boss Fights (excluding Stage 7): Up: Jump Left: Move left Right: Move right Down: Crouch B: Slash A: Nothing Y: Thrust X: Nothing START: Pause ------------------------------------------------------------- IV. GAMEPLAY: ------------------------------------------------------------- Stages: Attack the enemies and try not to get. A rather simple concept that really applies to all shmups. Throughout the stages there are occasionally power-ups. These appear as a series of 4 gray capsules in a row. Destroy all four and the fourth will give a power-up. The power-ups look like Tekk crystals. There are three colors: red, green, and blue. Red crystals give you one use of your Voltekker attack. Green crystals restore a percentage of your life (you get more life back the lower you are). Blue crystals put Blade into attack mode for a limited time where you can smash through enemies without taking damage. Boss Fights: I won't lie to you, this is a very, very poor fighting game engine. You bounce off the walls and off other characters. The AI has horrible holes. The control response time is pitiful. But thankfully it's only a tiny fraction of the game. It's a fighting game engine. If you ever played a fighting game you know what to do. If you haven't, go buy the King of Fighters '96 right now. 2P Versus Mode: This mode of gameplay uses the aforementioned poor fighting game engine to let you and a friend beat each other up. It WILL get old very, very fast. The character selection screen from left to right is: Tekkaman Blade, Tekkaman Evil, Tekkaman Dagger, Tekkaman Axe, Tekkaman Lance, Tekkaman Sword ------------------------------------------------------------- V. WALTHROUGH & TRANSLATION: ------------------------------------------------------------- This section uses S-JIS encoded text to write in Japanese. You may need to set your browser to Japanese Shift-JIS encoding in order to view it properly. The English translation always follows the Japanese text. A little about what follows: One of the key problems with this game that I explained before is it's lack of story for people unfamiliar with the show. I have written a timeline around each stage to let you know exactly what is actually happening in the story. The basic format for each stage is: Stage title Detailed stage background story Translation of boss dialogue Boss strategy Post-stage text (if applicable) I hope this helps people to appreciate the game a bit more even if they've never seen the show or the comics. STAGE1: 天駆ける超人 ------------------------------------------------ Stage 1: The Superhero who Raced Through the Sky After Freeman and Honda completed work on Pegas to allow D-BOY to change into Tekkaman Blade again, D-BOY returned to the Orbital Ring to face Tekkaman Dagger again. Dagger: You did well to make it this far, Blade. Dagger: Traitorous Blade! You're going to be space dust! Dagger: Let's go, Blade! Boss Tip: Tekkaman Dagger is pathetically weak. He really doesn't do much damage to you and is a good character to beat up to figure out where all two of your complicated to operate (hah) buttons are. He's quite the fan of projectiles and loves to shoot at you from across the screen. Jump in and beat the snot out of him. Three well placed slashes should take care of his weapon. After that just focus on getting in hits on him wherever possible. He may dash at you once the weapon is gone. Just block if he does but don't just let him do it without a retort. The block damage from those attacks can really add up. STAGE2: 赤い戦慄エビル ------------------------------- Stage 2: The Red, Horrible Evil With the defeat of Tekkaman Dagger, D-BOY got a bad feeling despite the Space Knights's joy over their victory. He realized that if there were two people like himself and Dagger, there must be more. His suspicions would be proven right when a new Tekkaman appeared, Tekkaman Evil. After barely coming away from a battle with Evil in space, D-BOY returned to Earth, a bit disheartened and confused. One day, Aki was out with Milly and could have sworn she saw D-BOY at the mall. When she talked to him about it later, she discovered he had been at headquarters all day. Later that week they were assigned to go run more test on the Radam plants. The ended up in an old church where Aki again saw D-BOY's dead ringer. When D-BOY came face to face with him, he remembered it was his brother Shinya. They fought repeatedly with the battle eventually going back to the Orbital Ring. Evil: Blade!! This is will be your end! Blade: Yeah... that's just what I wanted to hear, Evil! Evil: Come on, Blade!! ... no, rather Takaya. Boss Tip: Evil attacks a bit more frequently than Dagger. He also seems to do a little more damage with those attacks. he's fairly light on use of projectiles so be more concerned with how dangerous he can be in close combat. Again, get in three, good, unblocked standing slashes to knock away his weapon. Once it's gone try to get him into corners and slash away like mad. Inch up to him and keep lashing if you get pushed back a bit. Be careful because even without a weapon, he can still do quite a bit of damage to you with his kicks. STAGE3: 霧の中の敵 ---------------------------- Stage 3: An Enemy in the Fog After Evil's defeat, Miyuki showed up having been rejected from the Radam Tekkaman creation process. At the time D-BOY didn't know it but his sister was dying as her life-force was being used up like fuel for the Radam (what happens to all people rejected from the Tekkaman process). During this time Freeman uncovers records of D-BOY's past and finds out his family was all on an exploration ship that had disappeared years ago. D-BOY's real name was Takaya Aiba. While D-BOY was away and distracted, three new Tekkamen showed up and proceeded to beat the all living shit out of Miyuki, lancing her through her arms and repeated slashing her chest until she had sustained so much damage, her body exploded. D-BOY arrived at the last second to see his sister die at the hands of Tekkaman Axe, Lance, and Sword. The Space Knight headquarters was also completely ruined during this same assault as was the Blue Earth (took a rough crash landing during the fight that almost killed Noal). Honda, Lemmie, Milly, and Freeman managed to escape. Aki, Noal, and Balzak were already gone when the attack hit. Later, Tekkaman Axe was tracked down to an old mansion in an area that had been taken over completely by the growth of Radam plants. D-BOY ran ahead of the rest of the Space Knights to face Axe. Axe: ... will you return to the Radam? Blade: Goddard! Axe: Don't you want to be with everyone the way things used to be? Blade: I refuse! Axe: I guess it can't be helped... Axe: In order to protect master Evil, I'll have to defeat you. Axe: Come at me, Takaya! Boss Tip: Axe is, surprisingly, one of the tougher bosses in the game. His projectile attack allows him to hold his axe in the air, ready to go, and not release it till you're in the path to get hit. It comes out as a blue wave about equal to his height. The damage is far from spectacular but it covers a larger screen area than most projectiles so look for it. In case you have yet to realize it, the fighting engine is so horribly flawed, the same strategy works perfectly on every boss. Two to three standing slashes to knock away his weapon then block all day and attack when you can. Should you get him in a corner attack and just don't stop. Walk forward and attack some more. He'll die. STAGE4: 死への迷宮 ------------------------------- Stage 4: The Labyrinth to Death After defeating Axe, the Space Knights had to take up shelter in an abandoned facility in the north (I'd assume it's in the north as there was snow everywhere). That's when it was discovered D-BOY's power was running out. Freeman's calculations showed that if D-BOY were to use his Tekk Sett again, he would explode the way his sister Miyuki did. Devastated and seeking an answer, Freeman and Honda worked around the clock to discover a way to help him fight once again. However it was only a matter of time until the Radam discovered where they were. Freeman found out that even in D-BOY, the Tekk process wasn't. There was another level of Tekkamen he dubbed Blastor Tekkamen. He began work on a process that would use the power stored in a Radam plant to upgrade D-BOY's power to this level. However there was a good chance he wouldn't live through the procedure. Against Aki's wishes, he went through with it. And that's when the Radam discovered their location. Tekkaman Lance began his attack on the facilities with an army of the alien young. Lance: Blade! Lance: What do you think you can do with how beat-up you are? Lance: There's no better end for a traitor like you than this. (roar/yell) ランス : なにっ Lance: What!? Boss Tip: This guy is somewhat annoying given how he had his ass absolutely handed to him by Blade in the cartoon. Though to be honest while annoying, he's no harder than any of the other bosses. Yadda yadda, block and attack over and over again. Knock away his weapon, etc. The only thing to really look out for is his love of this one anti-air slash. He loves it so much his AI (artificial idiocy) will sometime do it when you're on the other side of the screen and not even jumping! Anyway, jump-ins are even more of a no-no than usual in this fight. STAGE5: 闇と死の運命 -------------------------------------- Stage 5: Destiny of Darkness and Death The TV show and the game take a bit of a fork here. In the show, Tekkaman Sword is killed by Noal and Balzak in their Sol Tekkaman suits leading Balzak to die in the process. In the game apparently they have D-BOY fight her. So I guess you get to make up your own story for this one. Sorry folks. あなたにオメガさま・・・ (note: this and the next box are connected) Sword: Blade! I can't let you go to where Omega... Sword: No, where Kengo is. Sword: If you say you'll go to any length to beat me, then come try! Sword: Welcome, Blade! (to your doooom :)) Boss Tip: Sword is a bit faster than the other characters. She doesn't really have any new attacks that should hurt you though. As usual, try to get in a few standing slashes to knock away her weapon, then just keep doing slashes from a crouching block or standing block and let her jump into them. If you feel like it you can always just block till she ends up bouncing off you then attack as she lands, but that may actually require thought and timing. The Death of Evil After fighting his brother in one of the underground facilities, Evil is startled by the level of power D-BOY has as a Blastor Tekkaman and begs his older brother, Tekkaman Omega, to send him through the same process so he could beat D-BOY. Reluctantly, it is done. Meanwhile, D-BOY finds the Aiba residents, his family's, old home and goes for a trip down memory lane with Aki. Suddenly he recalls something he had buried in the backyard years ago and goes digging frantically by an old tree. There he found a time capsule he and his brother, Shinya/Evil, had left years ago. Among the belongings was a recording of them describing their lives and how happy they were as a family. D-BOY, on the verge of snapping, vows to make the Radam pay for what they've done to his family. Having finished the process, Blastor Tekkaman Evil engages D-BOY (in Blastor form) on the Orbital Ring for a final showdown to see who is really the strongest of the two, a question unsettled since their childhood. Evil: Heh... the time has come when I can finally beat you, brother! Blade: What!! Evil: Well then, isn't it about showtime for our battle? Boss Tip: Evil's AI (artificial idiocy) hasn't become much better or worse since the last fight. The same tired old boss strategies will still work. Avoid jump-ins because chances are you'll be the one who ends up hurt. Try to get him in a corner then crouch and slash like mad. Back away if needed. A few well placed standing slashes will knock away his weapon. Then it's just a game of pokes until he dies. After the battle, Evil lies dying. The Radam parasite that had been controlling his thoughts for so long breaks from him and runs away. D-BOY squashes it. Blade: Shinya! Hang on! Evil: It feels like I'm waking from a bad dream... Blade: You're finally back! Evil: T.. Takaya? Brother? I'm so happy. Evil: You actually fought me for real. Evil: Thanks to that, I'm finally back to normal. Evil: Here, take my crystal. Evil: With this you'll be able to get to the Radam mother ship. Evil: Omega... no, Kengo, our brother... is waiting... Blade: Shinya...! Blade: Shinya... your death wasn't in vain. Blade: Omega, this will be the final battle! Everything ends here! STAGE7: 燃えつきる命 ---------------------------- Stage 7: Blazing Life Seeking retribution, D-BOY flies off to the Radam base to kill them all for what's been done to himself and his family. Part way there he begins to run out of steam and uses the remaining power of Shinya's crystal to give him a boost. However his mind is on the verge of breaking and can hardly handle the strain. While he arrives to fight his brother Kengo, Tekkaman Omega, he has completely snapped. Omega: Blade, you've finally come. Omega: You've been left incomplete as a Radam. Omega: We've been cornered here from every direction. Omega: But this is it, Blade! Omega: Everything is for the Radam! Omega: That planet, Earth, even the entire universe are as well! Blade: Omega! I'll defeat you! Blade: For the sake of all the loving people who you'd kill! Blade: That's why I'll drag your soul back to Earth!! Boss Tip: Now is when you better hope you didn't lose lives earlier in the game. Expect to be losing one RIGHT NOW. Tekkaman Omega has three attack patterns. They are all three independent parts of him to kill. He offers little in the way of surprises. The first attack will be his tail which whips around the lower half of the screen. You have to attack it without it hitting you. This can be tricky as it's pattern is a little erratic. The tail will also throw out balls that explode into 8 shots and spread out on the screen. This is unquestionably the hardest of all his attacks to evade. The second attack comes from his axe. He just repeatedly thrusts it out, then pulls it back. While extended, attack his hand for damage, then back away before he brings the axe back. This is an easier fight than the game's pre-bosses. The final stage is a bit trippy. Kengo's head opens up on Tekkaman Omega's chest and fires a laser beam at you. He will also throw out some cover fire of 8 shots that may come before, after, or during the laser beam so watch for it and try not to get hit. You can dispel the shots with a slash but it's not worth getting in the path of the laser over. Blade: Come on, Kengo. Let's go home. Father, Mother, Goaddard, Shinya, and Miyuki are all waiting. To our sweet home...!! The Radam fell into ruin and mankind returned to its former life. Takaya, who had fought for his beliefs, lost all memory of his old life. The ones he loved were taken by the Radam. CREDITS & NOTES ------------------------------------------------------------- Main Translation - D-BOY Story Notes - D-BOY Document Layout - D-BO... I think you get the idea :P Special thanks to Eien Ni Hen for helping me with a few lines of the script that were really giving me some trouble! Thanks to Kitsune for bitching at me to make this a walkthrough. I bitched back that the game is so simple stage and boss strategies really just insult the reader's intelligence. However it added almost 8KB to the FAQ and who knows, maybe there's someone out there who would actually need them. Also thanks to Gideon Zhi for suggesting some of the edits made in this revision (yeah, I got them back in November, 2002. I'm not slow :P) If anyone could contribute a moves list for the characters in 2P Versus Mode it would be much appreciated. I do not have one. My cartridge was purchased used so I never had a manual (not that I know if the manual even has one). I know for certain that every character has at least one projectile attack and charge attack. I have also seen anti-air attack from the CPU on several occasions during play (especially Tekkaman Lance >_<). ----------------------------------------------------------- Copyright 2003
