I played it a little and the farther I went was level 2 or so. Back in time, I found it to be pretty difficult (*cought*) on easy mode so I never really played it that much. Just recently, I was looking for a review to write and I noticed there was no reviews for this game and no FAQs. So I though maybe I could write both - a review and a FAQ - and that's how I ended up like this. Now that I'm 16, I replayed the game for the review and the FAQ and I was surprised by the fact that the game that I found hard when I was young was in fact REALLY easy and short ! I beat it under 1 hour ! I doubt anyone will need this FAQ, knowing how short and easy the game is and knowing that this game was released a long time ago and that probably nobody is still playing the game, but I had a nice time replaying this fun game and writting this FAQ. WishingTikal ================================================================================ 2. ~~ R E V I E W ~~ ================================================================================ "Plunge into an Enchanted Adventure Beneath the Waves" Don't get turned down by this game just because it features Disney's little mermaid, it actually is a pretty good game with great gameplay despite it's quite short and easy. Story -7/10 Ursula is turning the merpeople of Triton's kingdom into polyps to rule the land. She even kidnap a member of the royal family (either Triton or Ariel) so you play as Ariel/Triton to rescue the merpeople and get peace back on the kingdom. Well, you already know Ariel's story anyway. We love Disney, don't we ? Graphics -8/10 I think the graphics weren't bad. The game plays in the water only and just by looking at the graphics, you can clearly see you're underwater. The background is blue with some little details on like seaweeds, corals, seashells, sea stars, rocks, sunken ships, old relics, etc. And all that's pretty well done. The main characters were nicely done, they actually really look quite the same as the ones in the old movie. The enemies and bosses also look great. The graphics have a clean look and that's ok with me. Music/Sound -7/10 The main theme at the beginning of the game is the same one as the movie theme and sounds really good. The music in the levels, though, don't remind of anything I've heard in the little mermaid movies and such. The music is ok, it goes well along the theme "underwater levels" and it's nice but nothing really special. The sounds are good too, they sound like what they're supposed to sound like and that's ok with me too. Gameplay -8/10 This game has good gameplay. You can choose to control either King Triton or Princess Ariel, the difficulty of the game (easy/medium/hard) and the buttons for the controls. The controls are so-so. Moving Ariel/Triton around controls a little like Ecco but I had some problems turning the character around etc. This type of underwater game plays better with a control stick than a control pad. There are several things to do while in a level. You can press Start to see the map of the place you are in (it's a little like a maze) and on that map you can see your location and the locations of all the Polyps scattered through the level. To clear a level, you have to rescue all these Merpeople using the map to locate them. Once they're all free, you battle with a boss and go to the next level. There are enemies too, in the levels and you can hit them with magical powder (Ariel) or the Trident (Triton). You can also find keys to open treasure chests hidden through the levels and collect gold and treasure. You can call your fish friends for some help too (Flounder/Sebastian). You can buy special magicalpowder, health, keys and more in Scuttle's "shop" located somewhere in each levels. You can buy all these things with the treasures you collected in the levels. So all that's pretty great, isn't it ? Sadly, the game has only 4 worlds. On easy mode, you can finish the game in 1 hour. That's quite short. Sure, you can play as Ariel and then as Triton and try to beat the game on hard mode but is it really worth it ? Overall -8/10 In overall, it's a fun little game aiming for kids. Don't bother getting the game unless you can get it for $2. It's fun playing once, trying the 2 characters and trying the hard mode but that's all. ================================================================================ 3. ~~ G A M E B A S I C S ~~ ================================================================================ *********************** 3.a)Characters *********************** ~Ariel~ Princess Ariel is a little mermaid, daughter of King Triton. She loves Prince Erik (who's not in the game) and she likes adventures. She'd like to have legs to able to live with Erik. She has a beautiful voice. ~Triton~ The King of the underwater kingdom. He has a Trident as weapon. ~Flounder~ Ariel's best friend. In the game, he can move up boulders to get you into blocked passageways. ~Sebastian~ The King's adviser. Triton always sends him to look after Ariel. In the game, he'll help you get out of trouble by killing all the enemies around. ~The digger fish~ In the game, he helps you by uncovering buried treasure at the bottom of the sea in the levels. ~Scuttle~ Ariel's bird friend, always bringing her back things for the human world. In the game, he sells you useful things in exchange of some pearls. You can find his shop by finding the chart with his head on. ~Ursula~ She's a big ugly octopus. She's jalouse of Ariel's voice. Once, she sold her legs in exchange of her voice. In the game, she wants to rule the underwater kingdom. ~The Merpeople~ The inhabitants of the underwater kingdom. Ursula turned them into polyps to rule the kingdom. You have to rescue them all to save the kingdom. *********************** 3.b)Controls *********************** You can change the controls at the beginning of a game but these are the default controls. ~In a level~ Start ~~ See the map. A ~~ Special Weapon. (Ariel = magical stars)(Triton = tunderbolt) B ~~ Normal Weapon. (Ariel = sparkle of notes)(Triton = fireball) C ~~ Call a Fish Friend. ~On the map screen~ A/B/C ~~ Call up the Fish Friend selection screen. Start ~~ Return to game screen. *********************** 3.c)Options *********************** You can switch to Ariel/Triton, change the buttons for the control, turn the sounds on or off and choose the difficulty level. ~Difficulty~ Easy ~~ Triton/Ariel starts with more tries, treasure, super weapons, Fish Friends, and keys. You also go automatically to the boss level after each of the four levels. 4 continues in a easy game. Medium ~~ The boss entry appears on the map, and you must make Triton/Ariel swim into that spot to enter the boss level. 2 continues in a medium game. Hard ~~ Triton/Ariel starts with zero super weapons, keys, and treasure, fewer Fish Friends, and has to find the entry to each boss level. 1 continue in a difficult game. *********************** 3.d)Items *********************** ~Polyp~ Float over the miserable little polyp or shoot it with your normal weapon to turn it into a beautiful merperson. ~Treasure Chest~ Sometimes out in the open, sometimes buried in the sand, treasure chests yield a wealth of helpful item -- but only when you have a key! Float over the chest to release its magical items, then quickly float over the items before they rise to the surface. Each time you open a chest you use up one key. ~Key~ Unlocks a treasure chest. ($150 at Scuttle's shop) ~Little Heart~ Replenishes your health meter a bit. ($300 at Scuttle's shop) ~Big Heart~ Completely restores your health. ($600 at Scuttle's shop) ~Gem~ Adds to your treasure. ~Coin~ Increases your treasure. ~Sparkle~ Gives you one more try before you have to use a Continue. ($1500 at Scuttle's shop) ~Star~ Gives you one more shot with your powerful star voice or thunderbolt. ($50 at Scuttle's shop) *********************** 3.e)Enemies *********************** ~Sea Urchin~ Hurts you if you touch it. ~Crab~ Depletes your health when it pinches you. ~Clam~ It dances invitingly but the clam can also bit you! Sometimes you can get it to release a valuable item. ~Shark~ These guys are quite social, and determinated to have you for dinner. ~Eel~ They'll zap you and sap your strenght. In The Cave, they're electric! ~Skeleton~ Their swords are dangerous, but so are their bones! *********************** 3.f)Tips *********************** If you're playing a difficult-level game, be careful about using Flounder's help too often. Save him for the harder areas. Before you leave each level to fight the boss, be sure to visit Scuttle and stock up on helpful items. You'll need all the strenght and tries you can get to greet your next host. Some monsters are extremely tough. Take several shots, then move away and dodge their fire while they tire. If you're patient and skilled, you'll beat them. Don't forget to call for Sebastian's help when you see lots of mean creatures ready to ambush you! On your own, you'd take lots of damage. ================================================================================ 4. ~~ W A L K T H R O U G H ~~ ================================================================================ *********************** 4.a)Level 1 ~The Reef~ *********************** This level is quite cool, you're in a nice coral reef. The enemies you'll encounters are : Sea Urchin, Crabs, Clams, Sharks and Eels. This level is quite large and like a maze so look at your map to locate the Polyps. In the middle of the level, at the top of the screen, you can find Scuttle's shop and buy what you need. Watch out for the Eels hidden inside some of the rock faces. Once you find all the Polyps, prepare for the first boss. ****************************** 4.b)Boss 1 ~The Lava Monster~ ****************************** Now you're in a lava cave, facing a kind of demon. He'll throw lava balls at you and they'll bounce up on the walls. He'll throw a lot of these at the same time so you can't really avoid all of them but don't really care about his attacks. Just stand next to his head, even if you're hit, and attack him continously until he melts and free the Merpeople. *************************** 4.c)Level 2 ~Sunken Ships~ *************************** The level I hate the most. It's the longest, the hardest, the more complicated and the more annoying. The enemies you'll encounter in this level are : Skeletons, Sea Urchins, Clams, Sharks, Eels and Crabs. You start in one of the sunken ships. Look at your map and get all the Polyps before leaving the ship. Outside the ship, get the Polyps and you can also find Scutter's shop at the bottom right of the sunken ship in the middle. Buy some health... To enter the last ship, you'll need Flounder's help to push the rocks blocking the entrance to the ship. Watch out for the Skeletons poping out of the doors in the ships, they're really annoying. Collect all the Polyps to face the boss. **************************** 4.d)Boss 2 ~The Shark Boss~ **************************** The hardest boss, even harder than the final boss (what's with this??). You're in a room with 4 holes on the wall. A big mad shark head will appear sometimes through one of these holes. Hit him as many times as you can when you see him. As a cheap attack, he'll send many sharks after you, at the time. Don't bother killing them, just look for the huge shark and attack him when you can. He'll eventually surrender and free the Merpeople. *********************** 4.e)Level 3 ~Atlantis~ *********************** My favorite level. It's nice looking but it's pretty short. The enemies you'll encounter here are the same ones as in the previous levels but watch out for the new enemies, a statues that throws discs(?) at you and another one that throws arrows with his bow. Look carefully in the relics to find all the Polyps using the map and once you've collected them all, you'll face the third boss. ************************ 4.f)Boss 3 ~The Medusa~ ************************ There is a big statue head with 3 snakes on it. They'll throw fire balls at you so try to avoid them if possible. Also watch out for the lava that'll fall from the ceiling. Move a lot to avoid all that. Destroy one snake at a time and once all three are defeated (just keep hitting them), they'll free the Merpeople. *********************** 4.g)Level 4 ~The Cave~ *********************** You're in a big underwater cave, Ursula's Hideout. In this level you'll encounter all the enemies, plus a new type of Eel. This one has an electric field around him so you have to wait until he drops it before killing it. Be careful of the Sharks too. Scutter's shop is located at 2 places, at the end of the cave and somewhere in the middle. Use all your gold to stock up on lives and special powder. Consult the map to find all the Polyps. Once they're all collected, be ready to face the last boss. ************************ 4.h)Final Boss ~Ursula~ ************************ I found it to be pretty easy for a final boss.. Ursula will attack you with energy balls, just avoid them or don't even bother, just stand next to her and keep hitting her with special powder or normal one, she'll be gone before you are. Your father/daughter is now free and so are the Merpeople and the Kingdom. Congratulations, you just completed the game. Now play as the other character, on hard mode. ================================================================================ 5. ~~ E N D ~~ ================================================================================ * All trademarks and copyrights contained in this document are owned by their respective trademark and copyright holders.
